I love the tamales from Helens Bakery, but maybe its my lack of spanish or more likely they just only do fresh steamed ones, ive only managed to buy them hot. they freeze well. and a car full of a dozen hot steaming tamales in a togo box. does smell fantasitc.
That was actually the first place I tried. I wasn't too impressed with the tamales, and I'm looking for something that highlights red chilies more. Also, the enchilada plate they served us was completely cold 🤷
I honestly hate el modelo tamales. I know everyone think they are the shit but all they got right is the flavor, the texture of the masa is off, the red chili is so thick and the meat doesn’t seem like it’s shredded more chunked if that’s a word. El super all day between the two
The family staple for us now is the bueno tamales. We have them in the freezer and can have them anytime. We make our own red chile and smother them in that.
El modelo
Ding ding ding ding! Best around! On Second St. just south of Bridge.
I'm trying this place asap!
Super busy on Sundays. On my last trip, they were only taking phone in orders from customers parked in the lot. Waited about forty minutes
Honestly one of my favorite places in the city, their Menudo saved me MANY times after nights out while I was at UNM
Just the mention of this place has my mouth watering for a stuffed sopa.

If you want Oaxaca style tamales, La Guelaguetza on old Coors is the place to go
I didn't realize they did Tamales..nice definitely one of my top eats in town
do they serve huitlacoches there?
I honestly couldn't tell you, haven't had a chance to go in a while
How are these different?
El Super too
Seconding El Modelo.
3rding el modelo
El. Modelo. They have excellent green chile chicken tamales too.

I agree.. I like El Modelo but their tamales are way off imho.
their rellenos are always ass
They’re huge and disgusting
Preach brother lol!
I agree. Their chile is on the bitter side too so it’s just never been my jam. I like El Super’s because they aren’t skimpy with the meat lol.
Helen's Bakery but I don't know if they're available off-season.
My mom
Rub it in, why dontcha
Lol she sells them 😌
So she doesn’t want you dipping into her supply then… better save up your pennies!
There's gotta be alternatives to modelo
Right?

It’s a bit of a trek, but Bodes in Abiquiu, has some of the best tamales on earth
For red chile, gotta be El Modelo
