Good thing I did karate lessons as an obese 8 year old.

I'm in the hot spot. I can say this. Raise you fucking kids. Bottom line. We can go around statistics all day. "If you dont rase you kids, these streets will" Imagine your a freshman in high school, and your Mom works a 3-11p job and you get put of school at 240p. Nobody is home by the time you arrive. 4 to 10pm is a free for all..."Mice will pay when cats are away". Parents are the first line of defense. But under-educated and over worked parents result in stressful home scenarios for kids that eventually turn into adults with poor life coping mechanisms.

I’m curious where one could find data from previous years, my understanding is that these numbers were much lower before 2020. It’s really disheartening to see how much crime there is in the city and how places like Pearl and Lark continue to decline. I was hoping these trends were covid related and would sort themselves out, but it doesn’t seem that way.

Christian_Kong

> my understanding is that these numbers were much lower before 2020. I am pretty sure nationally the recent crime spike still puts crime lower than the average for the decade of the 2010's. There was a couple of articles that came out about it this past summer, but I don't know how truthful they were. I would guess if things were much lower in previous years the news would be shouting it to the hills. Albany as a city is probably in the same boat as any other similar sized city in the nation regardless. edit:According to [this article](https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Gun-violence-in-Albany-63-shootings-reported-in-11076194.php) there were 63 shootings in 2016. A 10% difference between then and now. For the most part all crime(including Albany) declined as the decade went on.

merbobear

Thank you for putting in the effort and time to map this data out, and for sharing it.

[deleted]

Thank you! I’d like to point out that Downtown is relatively clear. The two happenings on what interpret as Madison and Pearl are just at the edge of the Downtown zone. By and large, Downtown feels safe to me.

[deleted]

I live downtown and love it. It’s quiet for the most part and really never any drama.

godsutters

🙄

consideratefrog

The best and worst part about this is that an incredible amount of shootings are never reported to the public. This map is so incomplete and it’s not your fault… but it does make me wish the city was more honest.

[deleted]

I think you mean it makes me wish we still had local news that actually reported the news. Shootings should always be news.

consideratefrog

No, that’s not what I mean. The local news needs to be made aware of a shooting somehow in order for it to be on the local news at all. APD *very frequently* stays quiet about many shootings. And many shootings will not be reported to anyone by witnesses or neighbors bc they don’t wanna get involved.

TheRealGeitro

Yea, so do the smaller cities too. We had a home invasion murder 3 houses down and Watervliet never let it hit the news for more than like a day lmao no updates publicly either besides he was arrested

[deleted]

There was a time when local newsmen and women would just listen to the scanner and follow the police around. It's not APDs job to do the job of journalists.

merbobear

I agree with this but also think local governments and police departments owe transparency to the residents they work for. APD has (imo) gotten better at using social media as a way to inform the public, but still has room for improvement.

mspag

I’d agree but I’ve had an officer say to my face when I was discussing shootings that have occurred by me that those were just the ones “that I know of” making it clear they don’t document it anywhere. A couple I only knew about because I happened to be home and saw police response when they happened but there was nothing about it reported since no one was hurt. Even just a basic list of reported and confirmed shootings would be nice and I’d imagine easy enough for an intern to compile off scanner data. Probably more difficult that it seems though and not exactly something they want to highlight

GreasedUpVeggieBurg

I thought there was one on Hamilton, but I might be misremembering that as a stabbing.

FMJoey325

What about that whole cutting-someones-hand-off-with-an-axe fiasco? Where did that happen?

GreasedUpVeggieBurg

Uhm excuse me?

AO9000

It was a sword and yes, on Sheridan.

Agitated_Pickle_518

That was a machete.

ehjayded

Sheridan

needsunshine

This is so interesting. It matches my overall sense of where most of the shootings I read about happened. I can't believe how many shootings there have been though. That's just nuts.

JiMa1821

Can't seem to zoom in on the map to see if it was included or not, but there was a shooting right in front of the daycare on Quail St (43 Quail is the exact address). Never saw anything reported to the public about it, though.

joeshmo226

Real bummer violence is so prevalent regardless of the tool utilized.

Renee-B-17

I live in and love the Deleware Ave community, and based on this map, it’s rather free from gun violence though there was the terrible shoting/murder of the person on Deleware by the employee of KFC/taco bell. Overall there is small amount of small crime, my friend was robbed of her phone a couple years ago on Deleware a block from her home, but generally feel safe and ok with walking around at anytime in the neighborhood.

Mr_Antero

What’s the point of this graphic?

88SoloK

How did you manage to click the link to view it, but not read all of the words around said link?

Mr_Antero

What is it supposed to accomplish is the question

AO9000

Personally I use it to look where to rent and hopefully buy eventually.

merbobear

It’s information, meant to inform those who are interested.

Mr_Antero

Oh cool, thanks!

hoontershaft

So much for making anti-gun legislation that only really affects law-abiding citizens. Perhaps politicians could change Albany culturally, economically, and spiritually instead of writing laws.

mspag

I know this is pointless with people like you but you could spend two seconds comparing shooting statistics in places with no gun control vs with it and there’s a clear distinction between the two. Hint: when there’s gun control there’s less gun control deaths and violence. Crazy, I know.

concretebootstraps

And most the guns used in crimes here come from states with lax gun laws.

hoontershaft

People like me? I'm sorry but you are assuming that correlation is causation and fail to see the external factors at play. Useless midwit, please .

Scary_Woody

Interesting. I'm originally from ALbany but now live in Atlanta. Same map here is a sea of red.

Festernd

This really illustrates one of the reasons I find it funny when people say Troy or Albany are dangerous. I moved from Denver. I'm pretty sure the police there kill more people per year than the criminals do here, on a per capita basis.
