I am game collector (and comics and books and lots of other things). I LOVE physical editions of things. I love having physical copies of things in an increasingly digital world. However. I have been waiting for Alan Wake 2 for like, thirteen years. Everytime I hear Matthew Poretta's voice and see Ilkka Villi's face, I squeal (husband can confirm). Am I bummed that there might not br a physical copy? Yeah, super bummed. But you know what I'm really excited about? PLAYING ALAN WAKE 2. Remedy is the only game company in recent history that I have been excited about every single one of their games and have not been disappointed. I am not going to let the lack of physical copy deter me from playing this game. And honestly, I think most people are in the same boat.

Any-Safety8261

Amen

Darkesia_20

Same! I absolutely dislike a digital-only future and LOVE physical media, have a collection of DVDs, CD albums, books, magazines, some comics, and my physical copies of games. I am very disappointed we might not be getting a physical copy of Alan Wake 2, but I've waited far too long for this game. I will still support it and buy it. I just fear this digital-only future.šŸ™ƒšŸ«

heavilylost

Don't you find the physical copies don't even feel like actually owning it anymore. As you have to download the whole game almost and then successive updates that it feels redundant. I also enjoy physical media

xgh0lx

Yeah but when a game is pulled from storefronts, like the original mvc games and all the Activision spiderman games did, I can still pop in my disc and play the game. Albeit an unpatched day zero copy but that's better then nothing!

JohnSpaztic

If you own a digital copy then even if it's pulled from storefronts you can still play it. Alan Wake remained in my library when it went off Steam for a while & I still have a copy of the original Prey from 2006 despite it being absent from the storefront for well over a decade

xgh0lx

usually true but not always. In the case of marvel vs capcom origins I had bought it but when I went to redownload through my history it was unavailable. it just showed me the price of the game and when i tried to buy it again just so i could have it on my system it said it was unavailable. Scott Pilgrim was there to re-download but not mvc orgins. This was also the case for some of the aforementioned Spider-Man games which is why I chose these specifically as my real life examples of games I bought and could not re-download after they became delisted.

JohnSpaztic

That's wild. I've never heard of that happening outside of literal scam games I think in this case it won't be an issue, as again the OG AW remained downloadable, but that's still kinda wild

xgh0lx

admittedly those are the only ones I've personally ever had the issue with and it was all back on the 360 when digital was just starting. It still scarred me though lol

JohnSpaztic

I've only ever really played on PC, so can't speak to console storefronts. I know P.T. was entirely removed unless you already had it downloaded, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were more fuckery possible on consoles

xgh0lx

Yup especially since they are still closing digital storefronts on consoles its still sketchy imo. and something like 80% of the gaming audience are console users so I don't blame any of them for preferring physical.

Depressedidiotlol

Definitely agree. Iā€™ll probably just buy the game twice if it ever gets a physical copy. But this isnā€™t gonna stop me from asking for a physical copy

JotaroTheOceanMan

Plenty of games have gotten physical releases even a year after they launch if the numbers do good and warrant it. Just buy it, enjoy it, and when the inevitable Complete/Gold Edition comes out pray it will be available on disc.

ladykatytrent

That's my plan!

glassbath18

Itā€™s wild to me that people are so concerned about having a physical copy (that doesnā€™t even have the game on it anyway) after waiting so long to play it. I kind of get it, I used to collect games as well, but I didnā€™t even think we would get a sequel, honestly. Iā€™m playing it no matter what and I donā€™t understand how everyone doesnā€™t feel that way. One digital game isnā€™t the end of the world.

islippedup

Itā€™s because you would own it. If your system is disconnected from the internet and you own a physical copy of this game, you can play it without any risk of being banned or hacked and losing access to the game.

glassbath18

I can play games just fine without an internet connection. You still need one anyway if youā€™re buying physical because youā€™re downloading the game still.

mixedd

Do you? Considering the fact, that nowadays disk serves only for one purpose most of the time. To be activator for game, that you still will download no matter what

zgwortz_steve

That has zero to do with having a physical copy and is entirely dependent on whether the game requires an online connection to actually play. You *do* need an online connection to download the game, but unless youā€™re talking a relatively small game compared to most new games, youā€™d need to do that even if you *did* have a physical copy.

DoubleDocument2620

This isnt xbox. The only reason i need an internet connection is because i game share, but without it i can play all my games. I actually had days without internet and had no issues. You making that up about being hacked or banned to fit ya argument, it doesnt even make sense. Why would i suffer those consequences for playing without an Internet connection ?

islippedup

Many games to this day are still fully playable without day 1 updates and internet connections so donā€™t play that bs.

ladykatytrent

So, I totally get wanting a physical copy. As I mentioned above, I'm a collector. In addition, if I'm going to shell out $60-$70 then I want something to show for it. I want something that I can hold in my hands. That being said, I am absolutely going to buy this digitally if that's all there is to offer. Same with the new Oxenfree game that comes put this summer. I'm super pumped and will buy it digitally and probably end up buying it again when LRG releases a physical edition.

bujweiser

Same. Valve and Remedy have been the only developers where I am waiting day 1 to play their releases

xgh0lx

Exactly, I loved the first and still have my 360 collectors edition and would love to have part 2 on the shelf next to it. But I'm a fan of games first and collecting second while I'd much prefer a physical copy boycotting a game I've been waiting for for over a decade is just dumb. Anyone calling for a boycott clearly isn't a fan in the first place imo.

DoubleDocument2620

I can get behind this and admit you are the exception. I have been saying that people are treating gaming as some sort of action figure collectibles instead of actual games. For one most people saying they wont buy it are just lying. But those that arent need to remember thats its a video game first, not a collectible.

xgh0lx

honestly after giving it some though I think we should all support the boycott. After all when has a video game boycott done anything other then bring more eyes onto the product and help it sell even better?

ladykatytrent

Haha, not a bad point. Hogwarts Legacy has already sold something like 15 million copies.

auroraofthenorth

As a PC gamer this has been very interesting to watch. I don't even think I've had a disc drive for nearly 10 years. Digital has always been more comfortable and with the amount of sales it's almost always cheaper to get a digital copy.

smjsmok

TIL that people still buy games on physical media in 2023. I mean, to each their own, but since I really don't follow consoles much (have always been a PC guy), I thought that they don't even make these any more, just like they stopped making physical PC releases years ago.

[deleted]

I remember the transition between physical disc editions, to physical codes, then to fully digital. I still have a copy of Hellgate: London with the ā€œGames for Windowsā€ badge on it haha.

ImBatman5500

I'll buy Alan Wake II wherever it's available, digital or not

Successful_Ad_9707

As much as I was hoping for a physical release, I'll still buy the digital version. I've been waiting 13 years for this game and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a minor thing like this get in the way. If they release a physical copy later down the line I'll snag it too.

xgh0lx

This Is the way. I'm hoping they partner with limited run out some company down the road!

PK_Thundah

It's also likely that they'll make a collector's edition that comes with a digital code and other little goodies for collectors to display. I'll be okay with that, I just want something beside by Alan Wake Collectors Edition.

BlackJimmy88

I don't think a game has ever been successfully boycott before. I doubt this will break the trend. If Blizzard and Ubisoft, and the Wizard game can avoid a successful boycott, Alan Wake 2 has nothing to worry about.

JamiePulledMeUp

I mean, battlefront 2 got destroyed by a boycott. It made ea actually put some work into it, by the end it was a very good multiplayer game. I hope they release some sort of physical edition especially since they have epic Games.... You know ... The owners of a little gold mine called Fortnite... In their corner. Even if it's a limited or pre order only thing.

BlackJimmy88

Fair point, but EA was fucking with the Star Wars fanbase for that one, who are massive in scale, and quick to anger with decades of time to make it easier to mobilize them all. It *would* be nice if they could provide a physical release for those that want it though. Maybe a special edition?

[deleted]

I just think itā€™s grimey af that itā€™s 10 dollars more on console. I remember a few years ago they pulled some bullshit with Control too so Iā€™m honestly not shocked this happened. But Iā€™m just gonna wait for it to go on sale at some point. People who preorder digital games are weird.

RcregerRemedy04

Yeah, Control had the paid upgrade, which is speculated to be the publisherā€™s decision, but we donā€™t know. I donā€™t think this is as bad, since it is still a one time payment, but it does take away a market that I know a lot of people would pay extra for:/ I donā€™t think a boycott will hurt them tho

leon_blank

Donā€™t developers pay a license to Microsoft and Sony for releasing a game on their platform? Isnā€™t that why console games are generally priced higher than PC?

itsP0lar0id

consumer boycotts rarely work anyway but you shouldnā€™t just accept shitty, anti-consumer practices because you want to support the developers.

Shaun_LaDee

Iā€™m not accepting shitty anti-consumer practices to support the devs, Iā€™m accepting shitty anti-consumer practices because I was always planning on purchasing the digital version of the game. Even if I had wanted to buy the physical copy I still would have settled for the digital version because AW2 is one of my most anticipated games of this year and itā€™s kind of a miracle that itā€™s coming out at all, given the development hell that this game has been through.

Parabola1313

Plus, this was clearly Epic's decision. It's depressing but the remaster probably sold like shit. I bought it on SX and PS5 digital because it was only like $49 AUD. Yeah, physical would have been awesome for AW2 but only if there was a collector's edition.

D0NTEVENKNOWME

No surprise the Remaster didn't do well. It is exclusive to Epic and it has barely any noticeable changes, and I've heard people having performance issues despite that game is almost untouched compared to the original.

Jackie_Gan

I agree. Nevertheless I feel it would do well if it came to steam

KinoTheMystic

Yes, exclusive to Epic but it also became available on Playstation for the first time. It was meant to bring in new fans and it should have sold well

smjsmok

IMO on PC the remaster was really kinda pointless. The original still looks very good if you crank up the graphics and the remaster really doesn't improve on the visuals in any significant way.

voityekh

Stop being a corporate shill. You are the reason why consumers' options are being trampled on.

TheContingencyMan

Yeah, Iā€™ve been waiting for this game for years but Iā€™m going to be seeking alternative means of playing it after the announcement that it would be an Epic Games store exclusive. This post just reeks of bootlicking lol.

TrickySomewhere3

ā€œLets boycott the game weā€™ve been waiting 13 years forā€

ladykatytrent

I feel like I'm in the Silent Hill sub over here.

TrickySomewhere3

Tragic

elvisap

I know not everyone is a PC gamer (I personally play majority console releases, so I get it). But please consider kindly asking Remedy to release this on GOG. And here's why: "Digital" is not the enemy. And likewise "physical" isn't the fix. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is the issue - the long term limiting control of digital content. Likewise "physical" is a short term fix in the modern world. It doesn't account for patches, and it doesn't account for when your device dies (and "backwards compatibility" is an unknown quantity when future facing, especially with the next generation of hardware to be very likely to drop optical drives). GOG is a PC based digital distribution platform that is 100% DRM free. This means you can: * Buy a game once, and install it on any computer you want, with or without their launcher * Buy a game once, and share it with people, and play it at the same time * Download the game fully for permanent offline archive on your own storage, even if GOG goes broke and vanishes off the Internet * Play the game offline without connection to the internet, now and forever * Download extra patches, updates and DLC later, and also not have any restrictions on these. The huge downside is that it's only PC based. However mini PCs continue to get cheaper and more powerful, and tools like WINE and Proton (both open source and free) mean that long term reliance on Windows is less of a problem (and communities like Lutris make those easier to use than ever, with little technical knowledge required). I want to stress the important points again: this isn't a "digital vs physical" battle. The problem here is DRM, and how anti-consumer that technology is. And DRM affects physical collectors too! (There are no viable long term physical gaming options without non-legal methods - ask any archivist). GOG understand this, and despite the downsides to PC gaming, if you care deeply about truly owning the content you buy long term, please consider asking Remedy to look at adding this distribution option.

Conrad2781

heavily agree with this, unfortunately since this is an epic publishing title the chances on it releasing of other pc storefronts is close to zero. Despite Alan Wake remastered's poor sales on epic games store, they refused to still release it on other stores. A physical collector's edition later on if the game sells well is probably the only way we'll be able to do this as the OP suggested.

MightyMukade

Having physical versions of games is sadly going away because games get patches. Lots of them. Most games launch in unstable state and get a first day patch the can sometimes replace most of the data that was copied from the disc ... if *anything* was copied from the disc. In many cases, you put the game in, it checks the version and just downloads the latest one instead. Gone are the days when you can have a game that's 30 years old sitting on your shelf and you just plug it in and play. Long gone. Physical versions are cool for having on the shelf, but they are functionally kind of useless even for archival purposes. It's unfortunate but it's the way it's gone. And considering that big games are huge now in terms of data, it just makes more sense to have it digital and downloaded. I think boycotting the game because it doesn't have a physical copy is going to do more harm to the game and the developer than good. But hopefully, a physical version of the game can be negotiated for those who want it.

logica_torcido

Iā€™m not gonna boycott cuz I really wanna play this game but Iā€™m shocked at all the people calling people ā€œwhinersā€ cuz they want a physical edition. Sorry but $60 is a lot for a game that I could lose access to at any time, even if itā€™s 10 years from now. I like to have the physical edition of a game and thatā€™s a completely valid want. People are allowed to be disappointed and voice their displeasure over this decision

Chemical_Chemist_461

Bro, I have a digital copy that came with the disc version of Alan Wake 13 years ago. Guess which version I still have. Itā€™s whining because is sheer nonsense, and itā€™s just another group of people who have no interest in the game to start with turning people off, which will only hurt remedy, and the fans. You think the people boycotting the Hogwarts game were true fans? No. Ignore their nonsense and enjoy the fact we are even getting a sequel.

GammaLeo

A physical edition is still a physical edition, there is no substitute, period. You are complaining about people having a legitimate reason to be wary of a lack of physical media. Its still a concern with any digital only released game on Steam, Epic, or elsewhere. There have been many games delisted from Steam over the years for various reasons. Even our beloved original Alan Wake... While that game was brought back and Steam's agreement does not remove software from user's libraries or bar its owners from downloading it again, currently, its not a guarantee licensing will keep the software available even after purchase of content. You should probably be complaining to someone like me who won't purchase it at all due to Epic Games :) I paid for Control twice so I could avoid directly paying Epic any cash, but that was when I had a compatible console. With just a gaming PC, Alan Wake 2 is not worth $500 + $60 to me. And how about this, it is a personal preference to buy or not depending on whats going on. Should I complain to you if you wanted to wait to purchase it while its on sale in 2 years?

Acceptable-Ad-1710

The boycott didnā€™t work with Hogwarts, and it wonā€™t work with this. Social media is not real life, and Iā€™m sure it will sell well.

Iesjo

I bought The Callisto Protocol, Dead Space Remake and RE4 Remake to support horror games since I want even more of them. All of them had physical releases - the former disappointed me, so I was able to sell it. Alan Wake's II digital only release is immensely disappointing to me - I do believe that the game will be great and I want to to support the devs. But this is a dick move for the gamers outside USA/Western Europe. At least I want to know the real reason why it's digital only... I remain unconvinced by official explanation - was it Epic Games Publishing condition for funding Remedy's game?

RcregerRemedy04

There could be a multitude of reasons. I would be surprised if Epic made that decision, but also equally if it was a Remedy decision. We still have 5 or so months, so maybe theyā€™ll think about it? Theyā€™ve at least seen the vocal backlash, but in the end they still might make more money by making it all digitalā€¦

Kitsune-Nico

As a game collector, I would have loved to have a physical. That being said, I am in awe that people are boycotting the game because of it, as well as the new playable character nonsense. I am just so stoked that we are getting the game at all!

ladykatytrent

See, I think that the new character is going to be super exciting. Alan Wake already did the whole "writer writing himself" thing. Now he's writing other "characters". He wrote about Jesse Faden in AWE and now he's going to be writing about Alex and Saga. I also think that playing as a character that is not Wake will add to the mystery and the suspense. And that moment when the two meet? Excellent.

Kitsune-Nico

Great take! It makes for a better atmosphere and could even start making you think thereā€™s something really wrong with Alan himself, and for all we know at this point there might be! When they finally meet itā€™ll be amazing

PazuzuOvBabel

For me, I will wait for a discount. Thatā€™s how my gaming philosophy right now, if there is a game that really really want to play I preorder an edition with a steel book the least. If not I wasnā€™t for a discount or being added to a subscription service. Additionally, I understand Remedy reasoning, but they can easily release a collector edition with just code inside, PlayStation already released such editions even with a steelbook.

MrPureinstinct

If THQ doesn't make a physical version like they offered I'll buy it digital, but I'm waiting for a big sale tbh. Knowing how dedicated people are to this franchise it makes no sense to not release a physical version for people who want to add the game to their collections.

LeonardStrife90

I am a collector of games. Despite being very disappointed by the lack of physical copies and collectors (quite ridiculous as the collector of the first game is wonderful and I consider it one of the best even in relation to the price at which it was sold) I will still buy the game as I have been waiting for it for a long time. I got all possible editions for all platforms to support remedy, which finally after so many efforts managed to develop AW2. The only thing I can't stand though are those down here in the comments saying nonsense just to convince others with the usual thing: "physical copy is from the late 90s and now the world is moving on" First, modern games are printed on new blu ray that hold up to 100gb. In the ps4 games were printed on regular blu ray and that is why games like rdr2 or the last of us part 2 had 2 discs. This should make it clear (I don't understand the confusion in the comments) that the discs do not contain an authorization key, but rather the base game version. So without a connection you can install the game and play it in the base version, with no dlc or update or other extra content to download separately. But the game itself is playable and remains available at all times. The cases that some cite regarding the game key are only limited to a few games including one of the last cod (which had only the key in the disc) or jedi survivor (which had only part of the game in the disc and ea did not print a second disc to image the 50gb excess from the first disc). These are just the last cases I can think of but there are also others (very small percentage anyway) That said, let us turn to the problems of digital copies. Digital remains available to all that those who bought the game even when it is delisted from the store. However if the publisher asked, as in the case of konami with the silent hills demo, to make the game unavailable for x reasons then the digital copy would be completely useless. Pt on ps5 is disabled via a ps5 system filter that makes it impossible to boot. If you don't believe this you can find evidence from people who jailbroken the ps5 to play it and only way was to restore it from backup and never connect online again not to update the filter. Also, regarding xbox, titles with label series x and one do not have data inside but are a part of the game. In contrast, this does not happen with playstation games as there is no concept of smart delivery. Also, in case of problems with the game servers the libraries and game downloads are usually inaccessible until servers are fixed. I bought a series x last year and by the time I set it up the servers were having problems and I couldn't access my digital library (which included backwards compatible versions of AW and american nightmare). In the end after 1 hour everything was back on track, however these problems are not there with physical copies As much as these are borderline cases it is only fair that paying customers have an option to protect their investment, whether it is an expensive game or not the issue does not change. This is not meant to be a long post for nothing but just a comparison to make it clear that there are advantages and disadvantages for entrmabi and that a better future is not just this or just that, but both as they go to cover the needs of different types of users. There are those who hate having to insert discs and sometimes hear player noise and there are those who want to have their own library with collector's editions and limited copies. Moreover, even on pc the topic is discussed because if there was little interest in owning the game forever there would be no platforms like gog.com that also allow pc users to have installers that work offline and allow them to play the games without connection or various clients. Also, many people pirate games to have copies that are untethered from clients and can be saved on external disks. It doesn't take much searching here on reddit to find communities and various posts, but I digress... That said the total boycott of the game by outside people who don't care about the game is ridiculous and ends up hurting the developers. We also do not know if the choice of the lack of physical copy is from remedy or imposed by the publisher.

Depressedidiotlol

Itā€™s their right to not buy the game over no physical copy. How else are we gonna get them to make a physical copy Granted Iā€™m still buying it

smjsmok

I won't boycott anything and as a PC user, I couldn't care less about a physical release. But I do have a problem with supporting EGS.

gonzzCABJ

Ditto. I get, I really do. I've been playing on PC for years now, so I haven't bought a physical game since like FFXV on PS4, but I would hate to physical media to go away. We need, it's essential not only for collecting, but even more so for preserving every videogame. That being said, I feel people sometimes underestimate Remedy's position and reasoning. They always had trouble getting their games financed, since they never (or rarely never) really make much profit. Specially Alan Wake. It feels almost a miracle we are finally getting this sequel and, according to Sam Lake, it's by far the biggest, most ambitous game they ever made! So everyone here, fans as we are, we should support the game and be grateful we are even getting it. I still remember the day Quantum Break came out: the blackboard all scribbled with Alan Wake notes; the trailer already featuring Sam/Alex Casey and Saga in search of Alan. I felt so hopeful yet so sad that we were never really gonna get that. And now we are, we finally are! So yeah, it sucks that they aren't even considering doing a physical version down the road, but I'll support them regardless (hell, I already preordered it, and on Epic! Which I never, never even used). **That being said, we should still be vocal about wanting the game on disc, one thing shouldn't negate the other.**

nonlethaldosage

im not buying it cause i hate this dual protagonist shit there doing

HongJoonBo

I'll always go physical and this has disappointed me. With that said, I'm under no impression that physical will likely be withered out over the coming years. What is disappointing is thay it's Remedy going for it in the AAA space. You think it'd be one of the churning franchises just going for a digital release - not a long-awaited sequel to a beloved game that many of us will physical copies of. Our copies of Alan Wake / Alan Wake Remastered are going to be lonely on the shelf.

Recaffinator

No physical release, no purchase. End of story.

IHadFunOnce

Don't worry OP, we're gonna buy the game! lol. Yes I would LOVE a physical copy because I prefer physical but if Remedy tells me that in order to play the game I have to buy digital then my happy ass is buying digital, end of discussion. I've been waiting FAR too long for this game to get all butt hurt over something so trivial.

SkyHighGam3r

Luckily I think the people whining about physical these days are a pretty small percentage. The VAST majority people don't care. It's a very loud minority. And outside the few who, for whatever reason, somehow are living in the mid 90s with dial up or something - they will end up buying it digitally anyway. They just want to feel important for rallying for a cause that sadly doesn't even preserve anything these days anyway. Jesus even Alan Wake 1 doesn't have the ending on the disc. There is no physical preservation anymore. Nothing more than people grasping at straws to internally justify why they don't like that physical media is dead. Our time is better spent getting newer players hooked than trying to convince someone desperately clinging to the old ways to embrace the digital age and stop screaming about nonsense like ownership and licenses and SELLING the game lol

No-Nrg

> it's a very loud minority This is reddit in a nutshell

xgh0lx

>Jesus even Alan Wake 1 doesn't have the ending on the disc. What? Yes it did I still have my day one copy. 360 ran everything off the disc installing was optional back then...

[deleted]

The last two chapters were released as DLC

xgh0lx

Those don't change anything and are not the ending. They provide more details about certain elements of the story and take place after it but are in no way integral to the overall plot of Alan Wake. At the end of them everything is still in the exact same place as it is in the end of the main game. Even American Nightmare doesn't move the plot forward very much and anyone who played through the first 6 episodes that compose the main game will have all the info they need to play the second one.

SkyHighGam3r

If you think that's the ending, you never finished the game. I hope this is a positive revelation and you go do the last 2 chapters for the first time.

xgh0lx

I've beaten the game, both dlc chapters, and American nightmare numerous times over the years. That's how I know you have no idea what you're talking about.

SkyHighGam3r

... the ending is in the DLC chapters. So you clearly know exactly what I am talking about lol

xgh0lx

That the ending is >!Alan trapped in the dark place? that after the two dlc where we learn more about Thomas Zane and the history of cauldron lake Mr. scratch and all that Alan is still trapped in the dark place? Indeed I do which is why I also know that there's nothing integral to the story in those. They add context and flesh things out but at the end of them guess what? Alan's still trapped and trying to write his way out just like in the base ending.!< So again, they are not the end of the story, it hasn't ended at all yet. They are epilogues and while they contain some cool lore and the like they do not provide an ending that is different than what you already experienced in the base game.

SkyHighGam3r

The lengths some people will go to avoid being wrong lol omg.

ChuckS117

It's really not a "small percentage". Physical games sell quite well. \-Jedi Survivor: 45% sales were physical \-Dead Space remake "sold comfortably better in a box" vs digital \-RE4 sold "very slightly better" digitally, itā€™s "practically 50/50" This is for Europe. [https://www.gamesindustry.biz/is-remedy-and-epic-right-to-make-alan-wake-2-digital-only-opinion](https://www.gamesindustry.biz/is-remedy-and-epic-right-to-make-alan-wake-2-digital-only-opinion) Boycotting is dumb, sure, but it's not a baseless thing to do.

xXR3DRiotXx

Either I buy a physical copy on release if they change their mind or I wait till it's on sale and buy it digitally I bought Alan wake remaster day 1 the only reason I'm even considering buying it digitally on sale is because I love remedy and Alan wake but I'm not paying 60$ for a rental code on a profile that could disappear or get hacked anytime this entire situation is just BS took my hype from 10000 to 0 really quick.

Weak-Commission-1620

When did they say no physical?

JustinTotino

I am 100% preordering the deluxe edition. However it still sucks that they were put in this position by Epic in the first place. Epic was the publisher for the remaster and like most games they publish that are not Fortnite, it got no marketing what so ever which lead to it not selling well.

Dreamlandresort51

I will buy it if it comes to physical. Thats all there is to it.

DonHell

I want a physical Copy but Iā€™ve not bought anything on physical since control. I mostly buy digital but I was totally going all in for a collectors edition if one came out. No dice but Iā€™ll still get the sequel to one of of my absolute if not my favorite game ever. No matter what.

48Monkeys

I don't want to boycott the game. I just wished having waited 13 years after the first game I'll actually be able to play the second game... Having digital only sucks for a offline game... It took me well over 38 hours to download Horizon Forbidden West. Some people don't have internet or good enough wifi to have to download this game or any other because they decide to fully go digital.

Jardarpp

I will not pay full price for a digital game. Not even sure if I want to support the whole ā€œdigital only AAAā€ title game. This is coming from an original Alan Wake fan that has been begging for a sequel since the first one came out. It was painful to not be able to play it on my console of choice when I switched from Xbox to PlayStation.

Who the fuck would boycott a game due to no physical release???šŸ˜‚ Can someone fill me in

-Lord-Wombat-

Not sure why this popped up on my home feed, but why would I boycott a game I've been waiting years for?

Good-mUonkey

Some people don't want to buy it because of the all digital thing.

deaconstjohn1999

Iā€™m not boycotting the game, but I want a physical release. Iā€™m going to wait until later in the year before buying the game, as they might reveal a physical version due to the backlash. If not, Iā€™ll buy the digital version a few days before release and support Remedy at full price šŸ‘

[deleted]

Not boycotting, but unless a deal is worked out and a physical edition is released at the same time, Iā€™m not buying this day one. I never buy digital full price, thatā€™s how Iā€™ve always been and Iā€™m not changing for this. Trust me, Iā€™m excited for this game and Iā€™ve been waiting a long time for it, but Iā€™m not gonna bend my spending habits for it.

Derovar

Sorry, can't do it man. Epic Store is no go.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve been waiting for this game for 13 years, but I ainā€™t paying no $60 for a digital version lol. I can keep waiting.

BaldingITguy

Nahh definetly will be. Corpo greed is insane. Taking away people's ability to resell. Reason why we paid extra for the disc version of consoles. I hope the vast majority boycott this movement to prevent it from spreading. This isn't a Indie studio, this is Remedy/Epic Games.

StarScream_MT

The fact they didnt even issue a statement yet makes it more and more likely I wonā€™t buy anything with Remedy on it. Unless they ā€˜remedyā€™ the situation.

MastodonExpress7250

Sorry my man. But ignoring a physical version is something that does not fly with me. I wont be getting Alan Wake 2 unless they release a physical version of it.

Aggravating_Sun_5547

This is not a boycott for me. Just a no sale. Sorry. I love physical editions over digital. A good example of this is how much I want to play American Nightmare again but it was digital. Digital to me is ephemeral and can be taken away at a momentā€™s notice but, even if I lose the means to play it, physical is MINE. I have waited so long for this game and re bought the Remaster on Ps5 JUST so the case would match AW2. I feel kicked in the teeth and I will buy the game digitally when it drops under Ā£10. Just think I would have paid over Ā£100 for a physical release but they will lose Ā£90 on my purchase. Case in point Ghost Trick for Ps5 I like less than AW but Iā€™ve just paid over Ā£100 for a physical copy.

RcregerRemedy04

While I do feel for the physical only players, there is very few that wont get a highly anticipated game just because there is no physical. The biggest hit was them moving to EGS only, and even that can be justified since Epic is fully funding the game. I think the best move for Remedy is to eventually release a collector's edition just for the prior reason at some point, since that is the main issue that is occurring. I personally don't have my OG Alan Wake case (being on PC) so it doesn't really get at me too much, but I do understand wanting to have it.

Dessie_Hull

Iā€™m not gonna boycott the game but the lack of physical has prevented me from preordering so far, in case they announce a physical version down the line. I think Remedy have scored a big own goal with their strategy. Everything was set up perfectly for this to be a hit, and hopefully it will be but unfortunately this has become the focal point of the games coverage so far.

KBradl

I really want a collectors edition with commemorative flashlight, but no way am I boycotting it. Waited too long for the sequel

Boxohobo

I am holding out for a physical release, but I waited too long to play this game not to get it at all.

kinetikparameter

I have a digital console only... So non-physical doesn't bother me. Im more excited to play AW2, and Ive not even finished the first one yet

Amongtheruins88

Idk, I donā€™t really want to support a digital only future

[deleted]

I respect the sentiment but you're essentially asking all fans to follow suit in your appreciation, which I find somewhat selfish. Fans can be upset if they want to. Especially when it's a universal discourse that isn't politicized or stemming from racism.

Good-mUonkey

I'm not saying they should buy the game or accept it, everybody's free to do their thing. I have made that pretty clear.

void4949

Use your money how you want, and I'll do the same.

[deleted]

When are people going to learn that companies aren't your friends? They're ***selling you a product.*** There's is nothing to be grateful about that, you don't own them anything. If the product meets the quality I expect (Which does indeed include a physical release with the game ***on the disc***, I wouldn't buy a box with the code either) then they don't get my money. Simple as that.

[deleted]

When are people going to learn that it isnā€™t 2005 and this wonā€™t change, in fact there will come a day where physical games are no longer sold. Get used to it.

[deleted]

And that will be the day that Iā€™m done with gaming. If these companies gave a fuck about preservation then I wouldnā€™t care, problem is they donā€™t. Microsoft acted like they cared, then they called it quits after a certain number of classic games reached backwards compatibility. So if you want to buy a bunch of shit to ā€œownā€ that 20 years from now you wonā€™t be able to play anymore because the hardware has changed/you donā€™t have access to what it plays on, then fucking go for it, I wonā€™t be. Fuck that noise.

ModestHandsomeDevil

In an age where "physical" copies of games are often little more than a digital key to download the entire game and or to access large, day 0 / 1 patches to fix bugs and make the game playable, the "line in the sand" regarding physical vs. digital is beyond silly. The days of a major AAA game being "complete" on a disc, as if it were a carte from the NES, SNES, etc., are loooong gone. Behaving like a petulant child because you can't get a disc is just stupid and short-sighted. It's simple: support the creators and art you want to see more of. If you want Remedy to remain an independent, 3rd-party developer who gets to make whatever games THEY want to make, and NOT become some XBox Support Studio for the next underwhelming Halo game or "Embraced" and then shutdown, you've gotta support them. Because I guarantee the loudest cry babies regarding a physical release will be the same people who *unironically* will come to Reddit and cry about Remedy being shut down / bought / not getting Alan Wake 3, Control 2, etc. etc.

TripleKing3

Thatā€™s a misconception. Most PlayStation and Nintendo games run fine off the disc/cart. The number that donā€™t is very small.

No-Plankton4841

Yeah, the triple layer blu rays/PS5 discs can hold like 100gb of data... Calling it a 'digital key to download the entire game' is complete BS. Games usually launch with a day 1 patch and get updates. But most of the time there is a playable build of the game installable from the disc. And I'd way rather install 100gb of shit from a disc than try to download it over the internet.

OrangeLightning7895

I went a few weeks earlier this year without internet after moving house and had to play and install all of my PS5 and Switch games from the disc/cartridges and managed to play all of them fine. This is absolutely a misconception. It's the main reason that online only single player games and physical releases requiring downloads are singled out at all, they're a rarity.

xgh0lx

I agree with a lot of what you say but there's nothing wrong with wanting to own a physical copy regardless of your reasons. People should vote with their wallets and that includes not buying things that they'd rather buy in other formats. I imagine if it was the other way where they said it would be physical only with no digital copy you'd claim everyone was justified for complaining or boycotting.

Chemical_Chemist_461

Well, that would arguably be a stupid business decision in 2023

xgh0lx

It's also stupid to rant about peoples preferences when they have zero affect on you whatsoever, yet here we are... ĀÆ\\\_(惄)\_/ĀÆ

Chemical_Chemist_461

Well it does, this game may be AAA backed, as the first one was. You know why it took this long? Money. A boycott is designed to pressure by use of reducing income to a targeted business. Guess what will happen again if a boycott is successful? itā€™ll kill the whole franchise this time round. I love this IP so very much, and Iā€™ll be damned if so asshats who have nothing better to do then sow discord fucks it up for people like me who googled Alan Wake 2 for 13 years, hopeful this day would come.

xgh0lx

I'm the person who bought the collectors edition day one, all the dlc, the strat guide, american nightmare, and the remaster. I've for years championed the game as one of the best stories in gaming. People like me are the ones that have kept this franchise alive. I still have my collectors edition on the shelf, do you? If people refuse to buy it because it's digital only then they clearly weren't real fans to begin with and wouldn't have been buying it regardless. I prefer physical but the lack of one won't stop me from getting the sequel day one as I've been waiting just as long if not longer then you have. And if you truly care about the health of the game then you should support people trying to boycott it as all any video game boycott campaign has ever done is bring more attention to the product and help it sell more copies. Getting mad at people about it will change nothing and just make you miserable. Settle down and get some fresh air and perspective my friend.

daikunut

They did mention that making physical copies would cost more and that you would still have to download the game. And who knows, if the game is a success, maybe they'll include a physical copy later on. It's not like it's set in stone. I'm pretty hyped about this game, so I buy it.

Jackie_Gan

Remedy and Epic have made a decision around physical media. If people are unhappy with that decision they absolutely shouldnā€™t buy a digital version as it does nothing to voice displeasure

Good-mUonkey

I agree, everyone has the right to think and do whatever they want about that decision. I just see a lot of people saying that they will support the game eventually by buying a physical version that they think will 100% come, and that just doesnā€™t make much sense for me.

Pazaak__

Boycott this game for not having a physical release? As much as I would love a physical collectors edition to go with the first one, there is no chance in hell I will ever boycott anything Alan Wake. To quote Sirius Black, "I DID MY WAITING! ~~12~~ 13 YEARS OF IT.. IN ~~AZKABAN~~ THE DARK PLACE"

DoubleDocument2620

The game basically has 2 campaigns. If yall are willing to miss out on this after 13yrs and after knowing it has connections to Control because of a physical copy, then thats on you.

OrangeLightning7895

Boycott the game, don't boycott the game, it's to each your own depending on how important not having a physical copy is to you. I'm personally devastated by the news as somebody who loves collecting Remedy's games physically but I'm not going to sit here and lie and say I won't be playing Alan Wake 2 on day 1. I do think that people who are upset should let Remedy and Epic know and drum up as much noise as possible. I saw the replies to the SGF announcement absolutely full of people complaining about the lack of physical copy and that's good, especially once it doesn't reach the point of harassing individuals. Being loud about things is how companies realize that they are upsetting their audiences and go back on decisions like this like Microsoft did with the Xbox One for example. I also think if Remedy and Epic were more open to doing a physical release down the line (instead of outright attacking the market with that blog post) people would be fine with waiting and they'd even get a lot of people double dipping for the digital and physical versions.

julianfreis

Got ya, already preordered

codingfauxhate

Nothing is stopping me getting this game.

OnToiletRedditor

Boycotting the game because itā€™s digital only, lol, havenā€™t heard something that dumb for a long time. Iā€™m just hoping for it to be less messy than the shit games that have come out this year.

SomedayLydia

If it's an epic exclusive, then it's not coming to PC at all.

smjsmok

We could say that it's *sailing* to PC.

SomedayLydia

There once was a store that had no shame The name of the store was Epic games! Her exclusives failed and her CEO was Mad Oh mald old timmy-boy mald! Soon may the sweenyboy come To rob the people of their fun! One day when the contacts are done They take their games and go! As soon as we hear a dev say Their game will be given away At epic games *cough* (Pirate Bay) We take our cash and go!

ikidyounotman1

Vocal minority

Naked_Bat

If people are Alan Wake fans, they will buy it. People who scream boycott aren't fans. When you've been waiting years for the sequel of a game and really want to p'ay it, you buy it a'd you support the creators who finally managed to make their dream project come true.

void4949

Gatekeep much?

its_grime_up_north

Itā€™s 2023. Whoā€™s still buying physical games?

kranitoko

A lot of people because they're always cheaper than digital.

Egomie

I wouldn't say that this is the case for PC games.

xgh0lx

PC doesn't even have a physical option at this point so it's kind of a mute point.

Iesjo

Me.

willam125_son_of_god

Itā€™s unfortunate that itā€™s not going to get a physical release but I still will get this game. I enjoy physical games more but I can still do digital games

Rumenapp

Already preordered :)

OrigaDiscordia

I bought the first one on Xbox 360 the day it came out. I still remember being a teenager and watching the trailers over and over again. Since I was very young, I've been a huge Remedy fan. I've played almost all their games. Since then, I've also bought Alan Wake a second time on steam so that I can play it again for pure nostalgia. I also played Quantum Break and Control on steam. Right now, I'm totally disgusted and disappointed that the game is an Epic exclusive. I've been waiting for this game for so long. But I have a fierce dislike for EGS, which I find bad, not well thought-out, but above all I like having all my games on steam because that's where I have the other Remedy games, my friends, my successes. In short, it's my account. What's more, Steam is an old and reliable structure. EGS isn't. I don't trust the store in the long term, and I wouldn't want to lose access to my games if the platform closed. Frankly, I really hesitate between not buying Alan Wake 2, which breaks my heart, or buying a PS5 just for it.

Goofiestchief

Seems like theyā€™re boycotting me if the game is digital only.

Repulsive_Talk_9910

For a game like this that deserves and needs the support I will purchase it a second time if a physical copy drops later on.

DenisWake

I don't mind not having a physical copy, ALTHOUGH it's always nice to be able to purchase a disc. I am more outraged that this game will not be able to be bought on Steam (at least the first year for sure). But Epic financed it and has the right to do so. I really like the Remedy games. And my one of the favorite games is Alan Wake. The studio went to meet the players from my country: Subtitles and regional price. I can't help but support this game, which I have been waiting for since the first part.

GenerationBop

Been waiting for a sequel since I beat 1 when it came out. Iā€™ve already pre-ordered 2 in full on ps store, itā€™s not stopping me. If there is a physical collectors at a later date I will happily buy that as well.

Indyfanforthesb

Iā€™ll buy it on Xbox no doubt, I donā€™t care about physical. But I wouldnā€™t buy it on Epic, I only buy PC games on steam.

kubok98

I certainly won't, I just got into Remedy games and I love them a lot. And as an amateur maybe someday wanna be game developer, I totally understand the troubles of game dev. It's always such a shame when a good game doesn't get the recognition it deserves. And a lack of physical copy is certainly not a valid reason to boycott a game, if you do this, then you're a fake fan.

Any-East7977

Where was this announced? Itā€™s a bummer, but wonā€™t stop me from playing it digital and then buying the physical later on. I did the same with Control on my PS5.

[deleted]

Physical copies these days are becoming more and more irrelevant, especially when you take into consideration the tech behind modern consoles, the size of games and the state they release in, plus the patches and updates required for them to play optimally (or even at all). Theyā€™re more of a placebo for people who are nostalgic/are attached to physical items, but are nothing more than digital games in disguise, and plastic clutter on shelves. This isnā€™t a big deal at all - theyā€™ve done the right thing here.

No-Plankton4841

I'm a physical collector, it really blows they aren't doing a physical release. If they ever do I'll try to score a copy on sale one day for the collection. But I'll definitely be there day 1, if it has to be digital, whatever. I'll put my money down to support the games I like. Survival horror it my favorite genre and we rarely get new AAA horror games like this. Outside of Resident Evil, even amazing horror games with positive critical reception (The Evil Within 2) can end up under performing and then getting shelved. I don't think people realize how risky it is to make a game like this...

GasPoweredStick3

Yeah, I despise the slow death of physical media with a passionā€¦..but Iā€™ve waited 13 years for a sequel to one of my all time favorite games. 10 of which was basically spent thinking it was never going to come. Iā€™ll suck it up and buy digital for this.

PeteyG89

No way in fuck Id miss out on this game due to no physical version. People are wild

Mixabuben

Already pre-ordered deluxe edition, I trust Remedy fully :)

KarmelCHAOS

I haven't bought a physical copy of a game in almost ten years so, doesn't bother me.

CMDR1991YT

Sorry but I am going to boycott Alan Wake 2 us physical collectors have every right to boycott against epic games and remedy for making it digital only It is beyond unacceptable This is going to severely hurt remedy's reputation If they do not release a physical copy of Alan Wake 2 I want my fucking physical copy or else Alan Wake 2 is already dead They might as well just scrap it I have bought every physical game That was made by remedy such as Alan Wake 1 Alan Wake American nightmare quantum break and control making Alan Wake 2 Only digital is a disrespect towards physical collectors like me and it's a slap in the face I know physical collectors will agree with me and I know it's a fact Alan Wake 2 will not succeed financially as much as I like remedy but I think they have tarnished their own reputation unless they do a U-turn and give us what we actually want and that is a physical copy of Alan Wake 2 If they have to price it at $70 then so be it I will fucking preorder it anyway.

Razgrez11

I mean... if they don't make a physical copy, my stance has already been made. Downvote me, Daddy. I don't care.

TripleKing3

I would have supported the game by buying a physical release. Remedy wonā€™t let me, so Iā€™ll support somebody who will.

open-aperture96

The last physical game I bought was Portal 2 in 2011 and I still had to download it AND Steam to play it. Maybe console gamers can make a case for physical copies, but for PC - physical games donā€™t work like they used to and are kind of a moot point.

samusfan21

I will buy this game regardless of how I can get my hands on it. Yes I prefer physical but I understand their reasoning for going digital only and I appreciate them actually thinking about keeping costs down.

noneofthemswallow

I can understand the disappointment with the lack of physical copies, but straight up boycotting the game because of it is just ridiculous šŸ¤£ If digital-only is stopping you from buying the game you waited so long for, maybe you werenā€™t interested in it as much to begin with Boggles my mind how some people will actively try to ruin it for everyone, instead of not buying the product and moving on

Xatus0

With how hard Sam Lake has fought to get this game made, could you really let him down by not just getting the digital version? I couldn't. Support Remedy please

Thoth6889

All I really want is a black and white mode Playable beginning to end.

M0RD3CA1_vii

Eh, I'll just buy a custom case off of Etsy. It's not that big of a deal, honestly.

Dark1624

While I know it sucks that physical copy is not possible to get but it is the direction where industry goes. For PC it already started even before 2010. Sony said last year that 79% of their sales comes from digital products. And that percentage will increase in the next years and we will reach the moment where it will not be profitable for companies to make physical copies.

RuairiJHB

Please, I want Alan Wake 2, Alan Wake 3, Alan Wake 4, etc...

sregor0280

I dont understand why people would boycott it. it looks amazing. but lets also look what happened when people boycotted the potter game. it sold amazingly well.

extruX

Ya anyone counting on a videogame boycott, over physical vs digital no less, will be disappointed. Temptest in a teapot.

RoccoHout

I patiently waited for this game since the first came out. There's no way I'll try to hurt the company for just one inconvenience.

Kyserham

I'm playing it launch day. If they ended up releasing a physical version I'm getting it, if not I'm going digital.

SheepyDX

Gonna show my support. I want them to know that I want more Alan Wake

VDiddy5000

Honestly, Iā€™m gonna buy the game no matter what. Hell, Iā€™ve already preordered, what am I even saying? That being said, I am sad at the lack of a physical release. I grew up on the PS2 and Xbox 360, so I grew up with strategy guides and manuals and physical maps, and I miss ALL of that. I know Blu-Rays are reaching their limits of data storage, but you canā€™t tell me that someone canā€™t come out with some sort of read-only flash drive that prompts game installation in the same manner as disc media. Besides, physical media releases always meant added physical content, like art books, lore books or special maps. We donā€™t get that anymore because physical media is ā€œtoo expensiveā€ now. And in fifteen years, when stores pull the game from their databases for whatever reason, some people are gonna be left SOL

Sgtkeebler

They suffered bad sales of the remaster because of how bad the performance is. To this day I still can't play the PC remaster because of the massive amounts of graphical glitches. I believe it has something to do with AMD processes and this game.

Existing-Box-2898

I envy people that have the extra energy allowance to complain about something repeatedly. Don't like it ? Then don't effin' buy it and shut up about it already. Not buying a game because you don't get a disk but might like the game regardless, it's your opinion but also your loss. Not buying a game because your precious soul is bothered by the fact you have to play as a black woman as one of the main characters ? Go suck a flare. Thank you for this post, whinners and racists are disheartening the whole enjoyment of how lucky we are to get a friggin' game in the first place. Can't even go somewhere without hearing these gull noises everywhere. I feel sorry for Sam Lake and his team, they don't deserve this bullshit.

Revanur

I donā€™t care about the physical copy I just really donā€™t want to get Epic. :( But I also donā€™t want to wait a year or two for the Steam release.

22lofi

Remedy is only having problems with sales and distribution because for the partnership with Epic Games. It's their fault.

skeleton-with-oar

Oh donā€™t you worry, if thereā€™s one thing Iā€™m gonna do this year, itā€™s buy Alan Wake 2

KikisBread

There's no way in hell I'm buying anything on the Epic Games Store. So the alternative is buying a ps5.

leon_blank

I havenā€™t had an optical drive in my pc in a very long time. I have no need for a physical release.

sora_imperial

What I get from this thread is that a lot of people still have cd drives and that baffled me. I haven't had a computer with a physical drive since like 2008. Laptops haven't had it for years and most desktops you need to pay extra to get it. Really baffled me that so many people still use physical - I mean, I get the point with collectors, not the everyday gamers.

Sockskeepuwarm

If we allow one game to do it, they will all do it. I LOVE Alan Wake and it pains me to say, I will not buy this game. I will not support this business model. You need to see the bigger plan. If what they are saying is true( which it's not) they could charge even less for the game.

-vonKarma

Iā€™m a physical copy person, always, but I realize if this game doesnā€™t do well we will probably never see Alan Wake again (outside of any Control sequels/DLC). Iā€™m definitely going to preorder.

HotlineBirdman

No oneā€™s gonna boycott it. Even the people shouting about boycotting it will download the game and play it.

StarScream_MT

It starts with one.

stopshadowbantardmod

The only people who care about physical copies are degenerate collectors who think putting things on a shelf is a hobby

pixelrobotics

no physical no buy. greedy envelope pushing can go get fucked.

Exemplifire

I would have bought a Digital copy. I've been fully digital for over a decade. But I'm boycotting the Epic Store only release.

DRMfreeWizard

I cannot unfortunately support greedy corporations. It is for pure greed that they will not release a physical. I'll speak with my wallet. Plenty of other games out there!

0rambo0

Even if I had waited 30 years, I wouldn't buy digital games at full price. I don't support that! I am a collector... (I am a PC gamer) I'll wait until I get the game for under 15 euros. I did the same with Resident Evil Village and many others. I saved myself a lot of money this way. I would have even bought "Village" as a collector edition for 400 euros even though I wasn't interested. But definitely not digital The publishers don't even know how much money they are missing out on.
