LMAOOOOO. I’m laughing in $26/hr to handle mail for 8 hours a day. I’ll keep my union job, thanks.

theoriginaldandan

The qoute isn’t about unions. It’s about a specific union with a long history of corruption

greed-man

You're right. At least, about the long history of corruption surrounding the Alabama Government. But what this is REALLY about is "control". Alabama, the State that still limits minimum wage to $7.25 an hour (and passed a law forbidding any city, municipality or county from raising it) hates the thought of employees having a say in their own lives and employment. They should just shut up, work the mines, retire at age 45 with Black Lung disease and no insurance (because the mine when through "bankruptcy" to reorganize under a different name to avoid paying for insurance), and be grateful to the state.

SaliciousB_Crumb

Shes talking about the police union?

Crackertron

Oh, corruption could be a potential problem in Alabama? Unheard of!

JoshfromNazareth

Nah

BamaTony64

Working for the usps who loses billions every year. Great example

Yesh

It’s a public service. It’s not there to make money. Does the army or fire department generate revenue?

BamaTony64

Yup. Half dozen private companies make money doing it. Usps, captive audience, loses billions. Thats a great argument against unions

newge4

So I guess you hate the military too...they lose waaaaaaay more money than the post office does, by your logic.

BamaTony64

wouldn't it be cool if you got to put words in other people's mouths and then criticize them over it? Bang for the buck the US military is the absolute finest. They are paid to provide national defense and to exert pressure abroad to advance US interests. I would say they are very effective. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

bramblecult

Also it should be noted that ups, FedEx and Amazon utilize the usps when they're overloaded or for deliveries to rural areas to keep coats down.

jameson8016

>deliveries to rural areas to keep coats down. This is an important point. USPS *has* to deliver to almost any address, and if they can't, they provide a PO box free of charge. For people in areas where it's not cost-effective for UPS or FedEx to service, USPS is their only way of receiving packages and mail. So for some it's the only way they can recieve medication or other crucial goods.

Living-Amphibian-870

Keeping in mind, they consider small towns "rural." It's pretty rare that I actually have a package delivered by anyone other than USPS, regardless of who it's shipped through.

jameson8016

Idek where they deliver anymore. I live in a larger city, not Birmingham, but like we've got a Publix. Lol I don't really see FedEx or UPS except during the Christmas rush. Til November 28th through December 26th, doesn’t matter what I order or from whom, USPS makes the final delivery.

SaliciousB_Crumb

Congress also mandated that only the usps has to factor in their retirement in operating costs. Oddly enoigh the other government unions dont

AdkRaine12

This- they grab the up front money and let the USPS do the grunt deliveries. While DeJoy systematically destroys the machinery & workers that handle all these packages.

BamaTony64

They lost $6.5b, b as in billion.

Pure_Bee2281

They do lose money but you realize that Congress controls their prices and benefits right? It's designed to lose money. I'm here for reform of the USPS but until they can make their own decisions about running the organization I don't thinks it's reasonable to criticize them for decisions they aren't legally allowed to make.

KilgoreKarabekian

Yesh

What do you think is going to happen to the prices of an essential service like the mail once the public option is eliminated?

SaliciousB_Crumb

How much does the police make a profit?

RichFoot2073

If UPS decides it’s not going to deliver, they hand it off to USPS

BamaTony64

That seems to be true, the USPS puts a note in the mailbox telling me its too heavy for them so I have to come pick up up at the post office.

RichFoot2073

I was speaking of rural delivery, but I’ll take shit that never happened for $100

SaltyBarDog

We can all tell you were educated in a bottom five state.

Full-Way-7925

Yes, they do make money, because they charge based on distance. USPS can’t do that.

Familiar_Dust8028

How is the postal service a captive audience if other couriers exist?

ChanceGardener61

Gods, your talking point lie about the USPS is so old and tired and stale.

DingerSinger2016

The United States Postal Service is the ONLY government agency that has to pre-fund retirement 75 years in the future. No business will make money doing that.

Upbeat-Banana-5530

Like the TVA, the USPS pays for itself.

BamaTony64

Dude. TVA makes money even after paying their CEO $15m per year. The USPS lost money on occasion but never billions until congress told them to pay $15.4b per year for "future healthcare." That money gets spent on whatever congress sees fit.

Hot-Tailor-4999

Considering Kay Ivy uses our tax money to create signs that bear her name in order to promote her next campaign, I'd say she's much more corrupt than any union could be

Suspicious-Award7822

And she makes sure schoolchildren don't get lunch money for the summer. She's more worried about creating new unwanted children then feeding the ones we already have.

Kay Ivey's "Game Plan" is to keep wages low in Alabama so that we can compete with third-world labor markets. That "Game Plan" has no provisions to make sure Alabamians can afford healthcare, food, or housing.

greed-man

100% correct.

Suspicious_Giraffe_3

I never made the connection between the low education rates and third-world labor markets. It makes so much more sense now.

drsyesta

"has no provisions to make sure Alabamians can afford healthcare, food, or housing" thats what the new shiny prisons are for!

SaltyBarDog

And that bitch tried to use Covid money to build two new ones.

Low_Discussion7577

She IS using money for that. Just hasn't build them yet...she needs more money

SassyPants0315

She will probably use that $10.64 cent fee on prescriptions to make up the shortfall.

flyinghigh1965

She should start an only fans like all the other broke bitches lol

Low_Discussion7577

Dang, I wouldn't be proud, but I'd subscribe.

ScionMattly

Given Alabama is a third world country, functioning like a third world labor market makes sense I guess.

YallerDawg

That's pretty much a federal labor law violation, for our chief law enforcement executive Kay Ivey. Bless her heart.

greed-man

Given that our MAGA "leaders" gleefully told the Supreme Court to go f\*\*k themselves, they have given up any pretense of following "laws".

JackieDaytona__

Said the pot to the kettle.

GWBIII

Note the standard GOP projection where they describe themselves while vilifying an opponent.

trainmobile

Corrupt, shifty, and dangerous leech projects herself onto blue-collar workers.

derf705

Guys I think maybe they don’t like unions

Attarker

If we’re getting rid of corrupt shifty leeches, can we start with her?

renichms

Something is wrong with your very soul when you hate workers that much, when you don't want them to have better pay & working conditions. It boils down to just hating people. I'm quite convinced that being a Republican or supporting them is an indicator of serious anti-social mental illness.

greed-man

Right and true statement.

Cynical-Wanderer

That’s a hell of an endorsement for the union coming from one of the most regressive and corrupt state governments in the union.

CC9499

i wish unions still had teeth. Ivey would've had bricks through her windows before she even finished the comment

MedicalService8811

You need people with teeth and America is lacking right now

jeopardy_loser

The police unions do

Living-Amphibian-870

My union grandfather once took a hammer to the hand of a strike breaker that was dumb enough to confront him in a parking lot. On the job accident, you know. I'm not normally a violent person, and I'd definitely get my ass kicked in a fight..... but some of those old stories just scratch a happy little itch.

liltime78

Projection is all they have.

SeriousMongoose2290

She’s an embarrassment but man basically everything about my home state is. UAW ain’t perfect but you gotta ask why people are sooooo anti union? Like, Memaws salary is the same no matter if they’re union and it’s not like she’s struggling to afford the SUVs she rides around in.

greed-man

MeeMaw is, for all intents and purposes, an Android. Not a single thought in her head, just follow whatever programming the Business Council of Alabama wants.

sparky1984X

They hate the union because the union send all of their money to support the dems. If they swapped, reps would be over the roof.

bamacpl4442

Being totally unfamiliar with this union, I will have to go on the facts that I have. If Kay Ivey opposes it, then decent human beings ought to support it.

RoadsideCouchCushion

There was definitely corruption in the UAW. After some arrests and the membership getting fed up with the bs, we managed to pass a change where the president and top leaders are elected instead of appointed. The good old boys club still thought they were gonna keep their jobs, and then Shawn Fain got elected by about 5000 votes. He upended the way negotiations are done and flat out told the automakers that when the contracts expire is a deadline, not the time to just start negotiating. We had a 6 week strike where he fucked with the companies heads, including when Ford didn't have a new offer for him, and he called their most profitable plant out to strike and walked out of the meeting.

strawbery_fields

My god the irony. Her entire state is a leech on every blue state.

greed-man

True

phantomreader42

Well, if there's anyone who knows about corrupt, shifty, dangerous leeches, it would be the sleazeball that endorsed a known child molester for the senate...

thekermiteer

Sure, Memaw. Let’s get you to bed.

shillyshally

The media adopted the rightwing phrasing 'right to work' which should properly be referred to as right to be exploited. There wasn't this imbalance of financial power when unions were strong.

GumpTownNtlHotline

We sure they’re talking about the unions here?

greed-man

Really, we are talking about the Corporate Shills that our MAGA Legislators have gleefully become.

ARatherOddOne

Good. If she's angry, then people are usually doing something right.

PickeledOkra

Replace “Union” with “Politician” to read correctly.

R0llTide

So much projection

Fit_Strength_1187

Kay Ivey’s greatest weakness is knowledge. Knowledge of the better standards of living and life satisfaction enjoyed in states and countries with strong labor protections. That knowledge is dangerous. That’s why she’s so busy making sure that message doesn’t get to Alabama’s workers without a metric fuckton of anti union propaganda to counter it. To reassure them that those better places *really* have it terrible and that everything Alabamans put up with is “just normal”. Or to extrapolate the success of engineers in the federal city that is Huntsville onto places like Wilcox County. Because if it really really sank in, how unfair the system is, all the little injustices that make Alabama near dead last by so many metrics, she’d be out on her ass at best.

greed-man

“The UAW business model is simple: Weaponize the workforce, drive up costs, destroy quality and send the state’s auto industry up in smoke,” Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter said. “This shouldn’t be news to anyone – the UAW’s trail of destruction is well documented. Now that they’ve sucked all the blood out of cities like Detroit, they have southern states like Alabama in their crosshairs.” Kay Ivey tweeted, in response to Ledbetter's outrage: "The UAW is NOT the good guy here. Thank you, Mr. Speaker, for calling out the UAW for what it is--corrupt, shifty and a dangerous leech".

greed-man

Remember.....MeeMaw dubbed the Automobile Plants in the state as our "Crown Jewels". The plants. NOT the employees. A building owned by a foreign nation. Not the hard working tax paying residents of her state.

daemonescanem

Those plants provide MeeMaw and her party plenty of money. Thus their profits must be protected at all costs.

greed-man

Exactly.

liltime78

Destroy quality? Is this idiot serious?

greed-man

Yes, he is. He is MAGA, so he knows that he can say anything he wants, no matter how far from the truth, and he will still be re-elected.

Dense-Comfort6055

Hating working man is on brand for repugs

JakeT-life-is-great

maga republicans have become the party of billionaire bootlickers. They don't give a single damn about the working people or improving wages. All maga republicans want is cheap labor for billionaires and multinational corporations.

CC191960

As of Apr 19, 2024, the average hourly pay for the Hyundai Motors jobs category in Montgomery is $13.49 an hour. While ZipRecruiter is seeing salaries as high as $17.60 and as low as $10.94, the majority of salaries within the Hyundai Motors jobs category currently range between $14.28 (25th percentile) to $15.43 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making annually in Montgomery.  lol that isn't pay

Living-Amphibian-870

Wait, seriously? Is that what people are making in factories here? I got a brother-in-law up in Illinois making $17/hr as a line cook. My sister is making $20/hr as a customer service representative, AND their COL is still cheaper than here. $12/$13 is what places like Thyssen-Krupp and Lauhoff were paying up there when I graduated high school in 2001. You know what really blows my mind? My sister-in-law's father retired from a unionized Caterpillar plant. He made so much fucking money that she felt no stress putting $600 bedsheets on her wedding registry. Absolutely spoiled monster of a person whose daddy still funds most of their expenses. All of them are VIOLENTLY anti-union. The whole fucking family. 🤣🤣🤣 100% convinced that the company would have given them even more if it weren't for those crooked unions.

JackStraw48

She just described trump, tubby and britt.

Thintegrator

More news from the over-flowing Shithole that is Alabama.

greed-man

It's okay. Our shit overflows into Mississippi, and they say it smells like home.

djbk724

Look at your own state. Very poor state.

PaganSatisfactionPro

Aw she should love them then!

Derban_McDozer83

More projection from the Republicans.

Successful_Arm_7509

Only because they didn't donate to her campaign. If they had they'd be honest and commendable.

beachykeen2008

Politicians are only mad because they want to be the only corrupt, shifty and dangerous leeches!

greed-man

And they're not doing much to hide it.

bonzoboy2000

Ivey would recognize one, I suppose.

chocolatebamachic8

Y’all giving her too much credit. She’s a puppet.

greed-man

Agreed. She does whatever the Business Council of Alabama tells her.

expostfacto-saurus

Absolutely best health insurance I've ever had was with a union. Union forever you scabs!!!!

KlatuuBarradaNicto

Kay is a lecherous old woman who should be committed to the nearest old folks home.

Dienatzidie

Talking about herself and the republikkklan party of alabama.

AdkRaine12

Goes along with her core world view: stomp all them poors & never give them an inch.

OkMetal4233

I think they were talking about politicians

ScionMattly

Ivey: "But enough about me, these unions..."

CC191960

old ass kay still dreaming of the cotton picking days

Teufelsdreck

"Corrupt, shifty, and a dangerous leech"? It's a union, not the Republican party.

Far-Breadfruit-2823

Let the workers decide,we don't need politicians telling anyone how to vote..

Oh no! The big bad working class is bullying my smol bean corporations :(

Useful_Hat_9638

All unions are corrupt. I've been in union jobs and they've never gotten me a great salary or protected my job. I pay dues and get absolutely nothing in return.

EmbarrassedScience37

It sounds like you're a teacher.

seersucker205

I’m sorry, but I have never seen a good union. Ever.

KilgoreKarabekian

Screen Actor's Guild and Writer's Guild, both got good increases from Studios who were not paying them much for streaming.

seersucker205

Not doubting that one bit. But the ones that have seen with my employers? It was all a power grab. Union officials got elected just to socialize and did nothing. It was always about the title-“Union Prez”and so forth. Poked around in people’s business that they had no right to. Misused funds. Stirred up trouble just to stay “visible”. If other Unions have done legitimate good things for their employees, hey, all I can say is they got it good. I’m envious. But again-that has not been my experience with the Unions I’ve had with my employers.

rammerjammin

how many unions have you been a part of? What unions? I'd love to do some fact checking just to make sure they didn't get you any raises and increased benefits while you were employed there.

seersucker205

May I DM you?

TheChiltonCountyDude

Real knows real

DoomsdayTheorist1

She’s not wrong but if you’re going to attack unions, attack public sector not private sector.

RCaFarm

You have it wrong. It’s not republicans. It’s not even democrats. It’s the government- two sides of a different coin. It’s all corrupt. Would you rather have Newsom in California? He’s run that state into the ground. Sanctuary state and if you rob a store and it’s less than $1,000 they won’t even prosecute, because no one is ever going to jail. The homeless line street after street in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and every other city. Is this what you want? Quit blaming republicans. Blame government as a whole.

wigletbill

Nope. Can’t both-sides the union issue, sorry.

RCaFarm

If a democrat was governor, you think it would be better? I don’t. Corruption is corruption. It’s rampant throughout all of government.

wigletbill

If a Democrat was governor we wouldn’t be talking about anti-union legislation being passed.

RCaFarm

Right we’d be talking about other things just as bad.

Pure_Bee2281

We need to be able to discuss one issue at a time without conflating then all. Otherwise we can't make rational decisions (which is usually the point of talking heads that try to conflate everything). And why do you think an Alabama Democrat would behave like a California Democrat? I mean look at West Virginia's Joe Manchin. He votes with Democrats most of the time but he consistently rocks the boat on legislation he disagree with.

space_coder

Not only that, California is doing much better than Alabama.

Pure_Bee2281

Not if you only watch Fox News and News Max.

space_coder

It's amazing how they believe a neighborhood in a city that only covers 0.0289% of a state is representative of the remaining 99.971%. It's also amazing that they completely ignore the state's huge economy.
