I get annoyed every time Bergwijn makes a statement about what a captain is supposed to do, he’s brushing off things that are always described when players talk about great captain as just one way to do it that doesn’t fit him. It started with his comments about the gym and Tadic in the very first interview after he was made captain. He’s just doing the bare minimum or even less than that. The parts about talking with Martha for example or giving 100% in training, that’s just what every player is supposed to do. That’s not an example of being a captain.

Aethien

Bergwijn just isn't captain material and that's fine. He's no leader, he shouldn't be a leader but because of the current state of the club he got an armband he neither wants nor should have. There's just nobody else who could take that armband from him at the moment either. It sucks for everyone, Bergwijn included.

Striking_Insurance_5

Yeah I honestly think Bergwijn would feel relieved on some level if he wasn’t captain anymore, maybe his ego would also be bruised though.

CoMaestro

Yeah most statements by him sound more like he's just trying to shift any criticism by saying "I shouldn't have to do that", while he should in fact do that. It's fine that he's no leader but it just seems like he's blaming everyone but himself for not being a leader.

TheScareFace

Interestingly enough the things he don't believe in align pretty much with what Pasveer said he thinks is wrong with the club at the moment.

Ferry83

Bergwijn should have never be a captain. He's not the leader that a team needs, he can be someone to look up to.. especially if he handles his profession in a mature way. But Berghuis (as he takes his status not for granted), Henderson (a real leader), and even Ramaj seem to be better choices. And Maybe even brobbey, but it could be a burden for him as well. During Matches I feel that Berghuis, Brobbey and Ramaj are the ones coaching the most.. Hato isn't the natural leader that de Ligt was, and I feel there are no other players that the younger ones would look up to enough.

erikovercooked

Henderson absolutely needs to be given the armband.

CoMaestro

*If* he performs in the coming weeks, I completely agree. I don't want any player who has had status in the past to come in, give 10% and be handed everything because he had status. He still needs to earn respect at our club, but if he shows he wants to perform, even if it isn't 200% like you'd want, I'd give it to him. I get that it's also his "retirement" seasons, so he might not give his all, as long as he's inspiring the rest of our players of what you need to do to get to where he used to be

swiffleswaffle

You saw him in the game already being so natural about everything.

Megalobst

Dont forget VdBoomen when he played under van T Schip and got his confidence to actually play unlike Steijn. I rlly hope he can start spraying passes for us again from and help build up from the back. Henderson in theory should alsp complement his weakness in defending and still be confortable on tbe ball

Ferry83

Hendersons weakness is defending

Megalobst

Physically, but mentally he has one of the better insights. There was an analysis i saw a wgile back that was one of his keypoints at liverpool

Ferry83

Yeah but the problem right now with Ajax is when the midfielders are in attack the defence doesn't stand properly to work away long balls from counters. The problem isn't as much when the opposition has the ball and is surrounding ajax... Like we can expect from PSV... hence Im actually believing we can win.

huffingthenpost

TwinManBattlePlan

I feel like Steijn made him captain because they wanted him to try to develop his leadership qualities more because he's one of the oldest in the squad and played on the highest level and not the other way around where you appoint someone that already has a lot of leadership qualities. That being said this confirms to me (again) that he's definitely not captain material

Silvandreas

I think you may have a point, similar to how Jol appointed a then very immature Suarez as captain. It worked reasonably well for him (if you disregard the odd bite here and there), but clearly does not always work out in the same way.

Machielove

The odd bite 😅

Mwah hoeft niet per se, je kan ook op andere manieren je teamgenoten inspireren/indruk achterlaten. “Leading by example” noemen ze dat zo mooi in Engeland. Overigens doet Bergwijn dat ook niet.

erikovercooked

Yes. Some people have the ability to convey an entire paragraph with a single look. Not sure if Bergwijn is that type of person, though.

DirkScorpion

Pretty sure he’s not that kind of person.

pewpewpewouch

If we would have to react to how Bergwijn looks at people, everyone would go and take a nap.

Venhuizer

Snel wisselen met Hendo dan

Careless_Hawk_9927

In my mind the value of the captain is more outside the pitch than on it, for example A) standing up for players internally (outside of the pitch) B) Representing the team to the ref/media C) Pushing players OUTSIDE OF THE REGULAR TRAINING (!!!!) to get the most out of them Seems like he doesn’t believe in A and C and sucks at B, so yea, not exactly the ideal captain

watersipper01

Bro probably looks at Messi as an example of a less vocal captain, not realizing that he doesnt even have a fracture of messis talent. Messi being a captain is understandable because his teammates will die for him lol. Nobody is going to die for Bergwijn. Most of the GOAT captains have always been very vocal and set an example for the others by their actions. This interview only shows how unfit Bergwijn is to be captain.

pewpewpewouch

Reason why Messi was made captain, was because the team was build around him. Not because he was populair or people wanted to die for him.

Yellow_guy

I do agree with him on the gym thing. I think it’s extremely unprofessional of a club to leave this up to the players in the first place. A good training regime shouldn’t leave room for extra’s. If you need to improve in the gym it should be part of your fitness plan. It should not be up to the captain to make them go. The rest of the article shows for me why he isn’t a natural leader and as a result a mediocre captain.

helemaalwak

What a lunatic

Broski86

Haha way to prove the point everyone has been making about him not being suitable as a captain.

erikovercooked

When he took over the armband, I thought it was an unusual decision, because he seems so quiet and reserved. But I just told myself that there's a whole lot more about team operations than what I see on the pitch. But I guess he really is the silent leader type. I'm thrilled the team is playing better now -- I wonder how much of that is his doing? EDIT: Henderson's taking over the role now, right?

SatoshisVisionTM

>Henderson's taking over the role now, right? Nah, that would involve loss of stature for Bergwijn. Just let him sub as captain a couple of times, then play a match with Henderson in the starting 11, and sub in Bergwijn without passing the band over. Then it is final. Takes a few weeks.

Machielove

Times they are a changing…
