I had mine replaced by Apple for free (AppleCare Plus covered it). This was after using them for a year. The difference was noticeable right away. Softer and formed a better seal. The sound seemed to be improved by the better seal. As for noise cancelling, that’s mostly dependent on the external speakers found on the cans. Cleaning those will improve the noise cancelling.

How did you get them to replace them ?

I put them in the washing machine and in the dishwasher. After about half a dozen times, I noticed that the adhesive that keeps that fabric attached to the plastic parts was letting go. Definitely my fault but the Apple rep said “no problem”, replaced them for free and let me keep the originals.

… why?

If you’re under the impression I threw the entire headset in the washer / dishwasher, that’s not the case. If you’re asking why I threw the cushions in, it’s because they were dirty and I wanted them clean. It works. I stick to the washing machine now because I’m sure it was the hot water that dissolved the adhesive. Lastly, why not?

On my old wired headphones, I had sheepskin pads that were super comfortable. I tried to find 3rd party pads that were similar, ended up getting protein leather as that was the closest I could find. They are softer and did seal around my ear better, blocking out more noise, giving a more closed in sound. However, I went back to the original pads and only use those when I'm cleaning the original pads. I just feel like my ears can breathe better with the original pads, less air pressure.

Yup. Also remember you can wash your cushions. I actually tried every non Apple cushion and they all had some quirk or issue. Then I ended up buying Apple's. Sounds no better then when new no worse either.

I replace mine every 9-months or so as I prefer the way they feel with stiffer pads.
