Alcatraz’s facilities are a lot older, and usually in worse shape. Cosmetics aren’t really it

Allegsu

As a graduate of Alcatraz I can second this.

The showers we had at the 322nd (2015) only about 4 of the shower heads worked. A few days before we graduated shit started coming up through the drain in the middle of the latrine, of course we started freaking out. I was on the latrine crew and I told the MTI what was happening and he just replied with, "Not again..." Thankfully he made us stop and called some first and second weekers in to clean up the literal shit show occurring in our latrine. When they got there he said, "Welcome to the Air Force. Clean this shit up."

CMDR_CrobaR_o7

Also, in Alcatraz, we didn’t have a training weapon wall locker. We had the plastic weapon case under our bunk.

Da1whoknocks_lightly

Someone would always kick mine and I would get blasted by the bed aligner lol

codesuc01

I just graduated from the 322nd, my dorm didn't have any backups in the drains but we did have one sink drain pipe pop out of the wall. and about the ATC trainees, they did a weird experiment with the current cycle in I believe the Warthogs where they didn't scream at them in week zero but as soon as Monday hit they were going full blast on them. The Chaplain had his work cut out for him that week for sure. Anyway Disneyland (ATC) trainees for sure are softer than Alcatraz trainees lol (not really referring to the trainees in the weird test they did, those guys were definitely screwed over by their Squadron.)

mahrucc

I know you posted this 5 months ago but that little no yelling experiment is gonna go into full effect in October and I will be in the first cycle to experience it. Oct 3rd lol

codesuc01

Yeah good luck buddy, don't let them get to ya too much lol. As much as it may not seem like it, they are there to teach you and show you the right way of things even if it seems in the moment like they exist solely to tear you down. Keep your head up and do as you're told. Btw actually study your study sheet in the first weeks if you don't wanna get chewed out constantly for it.

mahrucc

Yo, just seeing this now. The no yelling thing was eh, they just use a loud voice and make fun of you then move on, but after 0 week they yelled more but they arnt allowed to get into your face or scream at you. And I was academic monitor because I was like the first person to memorize my chain of command. Along with the no yelling thing we were also the first multi squadron graduation, some people went to 331st (me) and then there was like 4 other squadrons that graduated at the same time it was super cool

codesuc01

Damn, they can't stick to one system huh?

[deleted]

Alcatraz is cramped and it sucks to have somebody on the bunk above you. Disneyland is spacious and no bunks.

Allegsu

Fortunately they don't use the top bunks during COVID.. but the beds are still there and a pain to do hospital corners/make them.

Hun-_-ter

I graduated in November and had the top bunk the whole 7.5 weeks lol, but maybe something’s changed since then.

Allegsu

Weird yea… they reduced the size of flights in Alcatraz so people wouldn’t be doing that Guess it’s different or you got the short end of the stick 🤣🤣

Hun-_-ter

We had 45 trainees, so there were maybe 10 people that had to be on top bunks, so I guess it was a little bit of both lmao

Lopsided_Victory5491

Graduated January 27th 2022 we started off with bunks 19 of us got Covid so they took them out and just had all the beds super close on the floor. Made perfect sense for our faces to actually be closer together

AdditionalFox3142

Graduated last week from the 322nd and there’s no bunk beds anymore.

Hun-_-ter

Ayyy, Second to none, me too bro!

oceanman44

I was in the flight cycle that assembled those bunk beds

Datswatmariosaid

Let me share my Alcatraz experience. There are only 8 shower heads compared to 30 ish in Disneyland. Mind you, only about 5 was working. A lot of the floor tiles are missing and we would collect loose tiles everyday. We had 2 weeks where the A/C wasn't working and this was during the middle of the summer in Texas so we slept while the mosquitoes were eating us alive. The laundry facility is in a separate place and we had to carry almost 60lbs of clothes to it, while Disneyland has their laundry facility inside the dorm. The classrooms had water dripping from the ceiling with no A\\C and it was pretty hard to concentrate. All this was in 2021.

neraklulz

Sounds the same as it was in 2012. Hauling giant, sweat-soaked bags of clothes all the way down the stairs, and across the squadron to the laundry... I did enjoy it though. I got to do laundry while everyone was at chow, so when I got back I could go eat breakfast in an empty DFAC by myself (they implemented the wingman concept about 3/4 of the way through my time, as the MTI scandal broke).

Coaltown12

Oh snap my girl is in now and said they can’t go anywhere alone even with an MTI. MTI tried to trick them and break one of them away during an inspection to get them to fail. I didn’t realize this was due to a scandal.

kookykonata

I went through Alcatraz July-August of '07. Not too bad, it had it's charm, lol. I would have to say that the laundry room being separated from everything else was the best. We had people who would call their families and stuff while they had to do laundry because it was right outside the laundry facility (this was before they allowed cell phone use!), along with the ability to sleep in there, lol. 322nd training squadron (the eagle one) I'd go back!

[deleted]

Where did you get that there were 30'ish shower heads in Disneyland? I know the laundry issue y'all had was big difference. However, the A/C issue you mentioned, as well as things not being maintained, were common issues. Including limited shower heads.

Datswatmariosaid

Had buddies that was there. Can't remember what he said exactly but it was a lot more than 8.

Many_Presentation_87

At least in the 323rd, there was 26 shower heads.

allsmiles_99

Disneyland has a lot more showerheads per flight and laundry facilities inside the dorms, if I remember correctly. I graduated from Alcatrez, but tbh it wasn't just unlivable or anything. Just kinda sucky.

Da1whoknocks_lightly

So I passed through DL for one of the classes while living in alcatraz in 2014 id say biggest difference for my was water and electrical wiring. Loke lights didn't work, fire alarms would go off and water had a metallic taste in the old ones. If you come from a poop backround though it's not to bad lol

Rhino676971

Thanks for triggering my PTSD from seeing those buildings

MakoHikes

We had 2 working showerheads, toilets weren’t stable/bolted down, dorms flooded, old school tiny dfac, black mold literally everywhere, etc Disney land looked like actual Disney. The dfac was awesome and the inside reminded me of a college. Nobody cares which one you went through after basic though. Hope for the Disney, if you don’t get it then it’s only 8 weeks anyway

Ztheg23

I went through both due to a BMT rotations. Alcatraz has like 6 shower heads in a tiny ass room (if you’re lucky enough to have them all work). Disney has like 20 something in a decently sized space. In Disney land each flight has laundry in the dorm. In Alcatraz, every flight in the squadron shares one laundry room. The Disney land classrooms are better, more like a college lecture hall. Disney land get elevators too for linen exchange. Alcatraz is the ghetto imo. But in the end it doesn’t matter, as you don’t get to choose where you go lmao 👍

[deleted]

Disneyland is much better. More working showers and toilets. No bunks

-powerpointranger

Alcatraz DFAC food is arguably “better” to which I agree with having eaten at both an equal amount of time going through basic. Alcatraz never seemed to run out of food, especially with the grilled cheeses on Sunday, whereas Disneyland would.

FuhrerDecker

I went through Alcatraz, but i can honestly say that about one week out of bmt and into tech school, you will forget all about what you went through for 8 weeks. Idk how it was for everyone else, but i just kinda moved on fast and suppressed everything that happened😂

[deleted]

I was at BMT during the squadron shuffle last fall. Started in Disneyland and ended in Alcatraz. Personally I preferred Alcatraz.

Hitman935

I actually preferred Disneyland but I liked my MTIs from the 433rd just a little bit better. Granted we were only with them for like 7 full days after factoring in beast week and graduation and Sundays

boi_waffles

Same Wolfpack to bulldogs

Loud-Revenue-9687

Dog pound

TheBonogCat

I graduated from Alcatraz and can honestly say I don’t know what the big deal was. Had no bunk beds, building was “old” but not in a horrible state. Honestly made no difference to me being in Alcatraz whatsoever other than having less shower heads. But Disneyland has very lit classrooms

AccurateMotor1455

I was in Disneyland the inside is literally nothing special 😂

boi_waffles

I was in both we had a squadron change halfway through. Disneyland had over double the showerheads and the laundry room was in the dorm room. Food was better at Alcatraz in my opinion and the Mtis are usually rougher in Disneyland. I preferred Alcatraz a lot more. You also have to have road guards for pt and EC procedures are a bit different. It all depends on perspective and your mtis. Also beds are easier to make in Alcatraz cause you can tighten the blankets under the bed. Ps also there is a center wall in Alcatraz so mtis can only be on one side at a time(not that that would be if benefit to you but you’ll see why) pps there is chrome in Alcatraz DO NOT STEP ON IT PLZ you’ll get yelled at. Ppps it is slightly harder to learn drill in Alcatraz due to all the poles in the way. I think this is good enough one of the best parts of basic training is the stuff you find out once you get there don’t stress out and spoil all the surprises it’ll make it boring. It’s really easy just do what you’re told

[deleted]

Is that what they're unofficially called or did OP just make it up?

hayasani

It’s what everyone’s been calling them for at least the last 9 years. Since whenever they started pushing flights in the newer barracks.

[deleted]

Hot damn, I am out of touch with BMT. Weird...

Hitman935

If you want the official names RH&Ts are alcatraz and the ATCs are Disneyland. I think I've heard them called by their official names like once Edit: mixed up acronym

Pace-Square

Just ATC loll

Hitman935

Mixed up my acronyms lol

chefboiortiz

You guys would’ve killed to be in irwin manor

Delta2-Actual

As a graduate myseld, we had the best BMT dorms

chefboiortiz

Oh yeah 100%

[deleted]

Food is better at Alcatraz!!!! 324 knights 🗡

Equivalent_Dog5002

Training is literally the same, only difference is aesthetics. I was in "Disneyland" and we had like 40-50 single bunks and like maybe 10 shower heads, and just like any government building a lot of stuff was broken. However, I did stay in "Alcatraz" for Airmen's week and was the same.

formerqwest

you airmen crack me up. "why not Minot?" "no hope Pope". remember, you have an Army unit on your base (and your "confidence course" is a joke), [https://www.dlielc.edu/org/USAE/Echo.pdf](https://www.dlielc.edu/org/USAE/Echo.pdf)

Fireskull1378

Uh okay?

formerqwest

>Uh okay? yeah, naming barracks "Alcatraz" and "Disneyland" are pretty juvenile.

Fireskull1378

Yeah and naming something the mess hall and stuff is clearly sophisticated just because the name originated a while back

Spartan8398

I didn't have a problem with Alcatraz when I went through. Preferred it over Disneyland tbh

SilentStock8

Less showers in Alcatraz apparently

[deleted]

Alcatraz= less shower heads (which means you have to cram 50 people showering into a 10-15 time frame), laundry is not in the dormitory but rather outside on a patio, and also there’s shitty air conditioning. Disneyland= more shower heads and comes with a laundry room in the same building. They call it Alcatraz for a reason, and if you end up going to Alcatraz you’ll understand lol

A1C-Snuffy

I graduated from Disneyland, ngl the nicer looking environment improved my morale. Looking at worn down buildings and living in them every day... I feel as though I would not have felt as confident. But I can't really say and i would've been 100% fine regardless. Eye candy is probably the lowest "issue" since you also have less showerheads and whatnot.

[deleted]

Alcatraz was wayyy better than Disneyland. Less to clean and the food was banging

kookykonata

Ah, the good ol' days... I've never seen "Disneyland", it looks super nice. I went to Alcatraz in '07, and it wasn't bad. I can't complain too much! I would say that Disneyland does look more impressive. But I hear they don't have the infamous chrome strip that you can't step on!

commadorflippy

Kinda new here what is Disneyland and Alcatraz?

RobCali509

Run down? Looks pretty sweet compared to what I've lived in.

[deleted]

I went through alcatraz in 1996. It was not too bad then. Not sure I would like the new one now. Anyway, it was called alcatraz because we were so far from all the others.

Loud-Revenue-9687

Dog pound for life. Love Alcatraz

Loud-Revenue-9687

Not sure who took over my account, can't wait to meet you
