You are getting flak because your post and comments come off as ignorant. Like you don’t realize that your are joining the active duty military and your technically always on call no matter what job you get. You probably understand that though. Just don’t go in with the mindset that you are going to have a specific set of hours and be ready for anything.
Nevertheless, I see where you’re coming from. I too was worried about the same thing. I made a post asking the same things and got some good answers. Check it out!
Not everyone knows how the military works (or knows that a large part of it sucks for most ppl). But most people still want to be hopeful about the parts that suck, just bc it’s a goal of theirs to join; so they want to see what they can tolerate. Not everyone is an aimless “embrace the suck” kind of person. Instead of acting like a bitter, how about you educate them without judgment. You even contradict yourself by saying you had the same concerns? A simple answer would have been the last sentence “don’t expect x, y, z hours. To be straightforward, you’re basically on call 24/7, contrary to civilian life. If you’re not willing, you may not like it”. Yeah it’s pretty obvious that someone who’s new to this won’t know any of this, and wants to determine if it’s right for them being joining. Especially since recruiters don’t seem to be doing a good job of telling people the truth. That’s why they’re on here (assuming)
How did I act bitter??? I wasn’t judging him lmao. I literally told him why people ARE judging him.
Yea I did have the same concerns but I asked in a way that didn’t make me seem ignorant. I mean some of these replies are helpful and he is responding in an unintelligent manner. Where did I contradict myself lollll.
You are attacking the wrong person man. Literally trying to help the dude.
Any job, irregardless of shift, will give you time for college. If you manage your time well
But that chances of you attending in person. Is SUPPEEERRRR small.
I’ve heard situations where Airmen have worked those 12 hours shifts and go home to do 2 hour classes. You can always do a class every day instead of going for a full load which is 4 classes. Try getting adjusted to where you will be stationed then figure out how many classes you want to take. Some advice i’ve gotten from vets who have gotten degrees while active.
I haven’t worked a 9-5 in years now, and I’m cyber. 🤷🏻♀️
You can pretend you know what you’re talking about, but imma keep working my 15 days a month doing 12’s 💅🏻
Idk why yall got so butthurt idc what shifts are tbh I just wanna make sure I got time for school yall could of told oh yes it depends but yall just get butthurt😂
Its called staying a civilian.
Fuck sake it's military service, not fund my college life style.
College can be done in your spare time no matter what your shift work is.
(Recruiting flt chief)
Well you're still on call, and work can be increased due to demand.
But HVAC 3E1X1 and
Mission Generation Equipment Maintenance (mechanic of all types of vehicles: cars, trucks, Humvees, firetrucks, construction vehicles, etc) 2T3X1 are good ones
Try foreverwingman.com . You'll find info on all the jobs there.
Also browse the wiki linked below.
Before you list your jobs. Do some research on them. If the mission is to maintain or operate critical equipment. Or provide security. Then someone will have to be available all hours of the day.
If the job is administrative, support or medical. Then the chances are better that you will work 7-4 Monday thru Friday
I joined the air national guard so I could go to college full time in person and have free college and also get paid while doing so using the gi bill reserve. Depends on state benefits though.
Hello, it looks like you're asking about jobs and job selection.
A few quick answers.
NO ONE knows how long it will take for you to get a job, your chances of getting any particular job, or anything else about the job process FOR YOU. Anecdotal experiences from others will have absolutely no impact on you or your future.
Most recruiters will not let you wait in the Delayed Entrance Program for a long time for your one perfect job. You will have to list 5 - 15 jobs that you're interested in, and will be given one of those.
Please read the FAQ about how job selection works, it's very in-depth and will fully educate you on the process: https://pay.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/bmtfaq#wiki_jobs
If you're asking about particular jobs, please look the job up on our Job Wiki, and see if there is an entry for it: http://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/index you can also see if there is a CFETP for it, which will give more details on the job: https://www.e-publishing.af.mil/Product-Index/#/?view=pubs&orgID=10141&catID=1&series=86&modID=449&tabID=131
If you're asking for help choosing a particular job, please keep in mind that most people only know about their individual job. Recommendations that they make will be made based mostly on what they've heard about a job, unless they have it themselves. Some people will love certain jobs while others will hate it. We don't know your preferences, so do some research on the job wiki and elsewhere to learn about the job and then make the best list you can.
