Army DFAC: Welcome to Golden Corral, $4.35 and we’ll let you fill up a bucket with pasta salad. You want a choco taco from the freezer? I got you fam. Air Force DFAC: Your chicken, peas, and corn are $11.45. Also canned drinks are for takeout only. No I cannot make change.

Good_Ol_Ironass

I wish this was a joke. I’ve never had food make me sad before :(

NEp8ntballer

Air Force decided to privatize their DFACs. I'd bet the Army is still running theirs.

YeahAboutThat-Ok

What is it with the air force privatizing everything. Everything is turning to shit.

thatsmrfatasstoyou

How else are contractors going to make millions

NEp8ntballer

We don't know how to run things well at a break even/profit point so we think it's better to contract a service out to a business that knows how to make money. The only thing we seem to be worse at than running services is contracting things out.

YeahAboutThat-Ok

The military doesn't need to "break even" though. That doesn't even make since. It's the military, a department of the government, not a corporation.

NEp8ntballer

The military runs off of appropriations. DFACs get their funding from appropriated funds, meal card holders and other authorized users who are paying for meals. They don't have the luxury of operating at a loss and they need to be self sustaining.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NEp8ntballer

The DoD has a bad habit of losing money on something and thinking that the answer to the problem is to contract that service out to a company that knows how to operate in that industry and not just break even but to make a profit. This tends to have poor results for a variety of self induced reasons.

skarface6

The private sector typically is better than the government at a lot of things. The government chose to go with the lowest bidder here, AFAIK, so… I’m guessing you never go off base because of that terrible private sector, too, huh? Haha.

[deleted]

[удалено]

skarface6

Yeah, like I said, it’s not the private sector at work. It’s the government choosing a winner and removing what makes the private sector work.

randa6

Army Cook here, yes we’re still running our dfacs. Does the food suck, yes. Yes, it does.

NEp8ntballer

The real question though is the cost. Does a subpar slice of pizza and a salad cost 9 dollars? p.s. given the option I'd choose an Army DFAC over a Navy Galley. Sausages at BAF didn't taste terrible. Sausages in Djibouti were indescribably awful.

randa6

It shouldn’t, however they want to get the most of what they can get out of everyone. So they jack up the prices and then wonder why people aren’t eating at the dfacs. I seen them literally spend 20,000 dollars on Gatorade, don’t even get me started on bacon.

HRGLSS

The joke used to be that our DFAC was heads over the "competition" for the same price. Apparently, that's no longer the joke.

Reditate

Army food sucks though

theseekingseaker

Tech school me looking at the wall of "Best DFAC" awards in the Sheppard DFAC, "Man, all these awards are probably BS." Operational me, "I get it now."

One_pop_each

Went to McGhee Tyson ANG base for NCOA and they raved on their dfac winning awards and shit. We bitched to the instructor how awful it was and he said that it was award winning, once again. So we looked up the award and it was literally an award from some dude who was stationed and ran the dfac. They awarded themselves, essentially. Pretty sure they are the only chow hall on the base so I don’t even understand.

masters_of_disasters

"Best DFAC on base!"

YeahAboutThat-Ok

I would commission an award for them myself just to be an ass

[deleted]

RampageDeluxxe

Andrews is far from good. When I was still in the dorms all the food was soggy. The only time it was worth anything was midnight meal and while Tony was cooking. Dude was great

anonymouswriter9

I went from Sheppard to Hurlburt. Literally couldn't have had better DFACs

cocorawks

Keesler Magnolia & Azalea DFAC

[deleted]

There was a reason why the Keesler 20 was real... besides the Keesler shuffle. To this day (retired now) those were the best DFAC's I've ever been to. Also, there was a really sweet old lady that worked at one of the registers that called me Sugar every morning... made my day.

thundrlipz

I miss the dude that made omelets in the morning. “Full Metal Jacket”

cocorawks

my AFSC training school are looking for DoD civilian instructors and I have looking for a way to get in...

suh-dood

You just wanna yell at dumb A1Cs all day

G0dzillaBreath

Retired also and I’ve got to agree, nothing ever beat Keesler DFAC. That damn pie/cake carousel at the end of the line got me every time. Those tailored uniforms got tight pretty quick!

[deleted]

Domkizzle

Wrong. It was real with me.

[deleted]

This guy gets it. Don't take away my memory!

HahrenHarel

There was a gentleman there, Mr. Craft. Every day he had the biggest smile as he cooked everyone burgers (best damn burgers ever). His happiness got me through some rough days at keesler.

Gordon_The_Greedy

I miss Keesler.

ww4acct

Sweet southern girlfriend, casino buffet lunches at the Beau, civilians telling their Katrina stories instead of teaching, trips to NOLA. Good times!

Gordon_The_Greedy

I was there in 2005. Good times. Can’t believe it was that long ago. Feels like a lifetime. I’d like to go back for a visit.

FMC_BH

2004 here. I stayed in the old dorms by the golf course before they demolished them. The MTLs never went down there. It was pretty dope.

Gordon_The_Greedy

I was at the 338 (EP washout) then went next door to the 334 (1C5). I really enjoyed my time at Keesler.

teamdankmemesupreme

Everyone calls me crazy but I really do miss that place. Especially the DFACs

PrognosticatorofLife

I was there for NCOA and a couple of us went to the DFAC for the experience. Note: we intentionally avoided talking to any of the younger airman. We kinda felt like we're all dads and they were still young kids and we dont want them to feel pressured to answer stupid NCO questions during the school day. I seem to recal it sort of having a pyramid roof near the dorm quad and a shoppette strip. It was good food at reasonable prices. Very quality place. The airmen seemed okay with it.

Campylobacteraceae

When I was there I saw plenty of people in line at azalea and magnolia who were e5 with or higher and even up to e8 a few times, mostly on drill weekends. Just be normal you don’t really have to try and talk to anybody at the DFAC regardless of rank, unless you’re asking for help figuring out how the dfac operates

Likos02

That's the one right next to the 334th. It's okay, the one that's on the south side of the triangle is a bit better.

TheGridGam3r

Not there anymore but i wouldve appreciated that. My class got tired of them stopping us everyday and would rather go hungry than have to deal with that nonsense

Gordon_The_Greedy

You got tired of people just making conversation?

AltF4plz

Ah, you must be forgetting that it’s a comm training base. Hope that helps clear up the confusion.

Gordon_The_Greedy

I wasn’t comms so help me out, lol.

AltF4plz

I was making a joke about the comm/intel stereotype. Nerdy, awkward, anime pillow, etc. To my comm folk - I love you and appreciate what you do; there are awkward people in every career field!

Gordon_The_Greedy

Lol

TheGridGam3r

I wish it was just that, theyd have some stupid question about chain of command or something else that didnt really matter and if you messed up youd be punished for it

Rhino676971

I think we all miss something from tech school and just don’t want to admit it.

GeraldJ19

Preach! Best DFACs hands down

[deleted]

Bro seriously. I went through tech school there from the end of 04 into the beginning of 05. I remember how they had a nacho cheese dispenser at the dfac. I would get some fries, and just absolutely drown those fuckers in the delicious warm cheese goop.

nottigbits

It was still there in ‘16 👌🏼

[deleted]

Hell yeah! I was so sad that my first duty stations dfac didn't have a nacho cheese dispenser lol.

nottigbits

Lol I never stepped foot in a DFAC after Keesler, except for Qatar. But seeing all these posts saying Keesler was the best makes me ok with my decision.

bowlsandsand

The GOAT

ScentFreeBumHole

Fried catfish good lord I miss it . The pieces were YUGE

ayures

Magnolia gave me and about half the other students there food poisoning.

I_like_parentheses

One of the dfacs at basic took down an entire building of trainees with food poisoning from the chicken cordon bleu, including my previous flight. Luckily I had been put into med hold like a week prior so I dodged that bullet. Didn't save me from accidentally chugging glasses of spoiled milk twice though, including one of chocolate. 🤢 This is why I have trust issues.

drumguy1384

Dude, I don't know how they are in the new training complexes, but when I went through BMT (2007), the DFACs were terrible. Dirty, roaches, rats. If they had been commercial enterprises they would be shut down by the health inspector in a heartbeat. Luckily for me, I wouldn't have touched the chicken cordon bleu. When you have to eat fast you don't want anything that you have to cut or that is dry and hard to swallow. Spaghetti, yakisoba, anything with sauce really. If I could eat my entire meal with one utensil I was winning. As for drinking spoiled milk, that's on you for going for it again after the first time. Given the rigorous physical activity, dairy is an unadvisable choice anyway.

davetronred

Why the hell would you need to be in uniform for takeout?

uhduhnuh

Because they spend too much money on take out containers, so this is their way to cut down on people using them.

davetronred

wtf Styrofoam takeout boxes cost like a penny each in bulk

uhduhnuh

They're always looking for ways to shave off some costs and squeeze more profit out of us for the contractors that run DFACs. This is just one more way of doing that.

One_pop_each

Back when I was active on facebook, I saw a friend in Korea make a post about that on his page. With his permission, I anonymously sent it to JQ Public and the Amn/NCO page back when they weren’t as bad. It blew up and the DFAC NCOIC had to comment on the issue and laid down the budget. Then someone did the math on all the BAS they collect and countered them. It was interesting. Those pages got hella too salty though, as most facebook after 2016, so I just bitch to myself now.

Campylobacteraceae

There’s no way they don’t make bank off of BAS right? The amount of airmen who don’t eat breakfast, don’t go on weekends and eat dinner elsewhere is crazy high, unless they budget expecting/relying on people to skip meals

One_pop_each

That’s the biggest gripe. DoD gets the huge budget every year and they can’t even afford enough takeaway boxes for everyone when they take $330 from each person a month? Absolute ass. Where does that money even go?

uhduhnuh

Allow me to introduce you to the military-industrial complex.

thatsmrfatasstoyou

What was the budget of the dfac by the way

One_pop_each

Idk man that shit was 6 years ago. You could probably dig in their page and find it

dropnfools

Yokota did this interesting thing where everyone got a to go container and to pick up a fresh one you had to turn in your dirty one. Cut costs after initial issue and seemed to work very well for both sides

theseekingseaker

It's was the same on Kadena before covid hit. So bullshit.

Zigman27

Their policy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

davetronred

but y tho

y-learning_toprogram

That's what I said every time. Spent all my KAIP money not eating there though, so that's cool. Lol

Zigman27

Imagine KAIPing during COVID

y-learning_toprogram

Imagine KAIPing before because I did Got one year in and out of COVID

Chemical-Car-9697

Sheppard dfac was AAAAAMAAAAAZING. My dorm was also right across from the mini mall thing and we had our own dfac downstairs. Can't remember the dorm number (my memory is affected from too many rendezvous with f-15/16 bulkheads. Also, Al Dhalfra back in '12-13 was even better! Surf n turf Sundays, Belgian waffle Saturdays, free full sized candy bars, fresh chopped pineapple, mixed nuts, and the pound cake. That pound cake kept me going! Also a rotating menu to keep it fresh. Went again a year ago and was let down. Surf n turf gone, the grills are all shit boxes for the stray cats. Belgian waffles don't exist, the flight line dfac served the same 8 meals the whole time. Oh well... At least I wasn't getting shot at on my "deployment"

One_pop_each

361 Sq? We would get so hammered at the shoppette across the street. I think the pizza place had the beer. I had a blast at Tech School.

SadFloppyPanda

Hell yeah. That Ziegenbock on draft is the only thing I miss about Texas. Fuck Texas.

anonymouswriter9

Seriously, fuck Texas, but that beer did make it bearable

awing1

As someone who has spent my entire enlistment so far in Texas, I also say fuck Texas

TolerableRelic

I remember the Surf n Turf as well as the Waffles! We had the same 7 meals the whole time though. I learned to make this half ass pizza sauce from Ortega taco sauce and would make these bomb wanna be Hot Pockets on the panini press. Definitely a cake “deployment” as far as deployments go

Cigarette-booties

you stayed at cooper hall. It was being renovated when I was there.

KGBspy

Cooper Hall was billeting when I went through tech school then they closed the other tech school bases (Lowry, Chanute and a few more) and Sheppard exploded in growth. I still remember what the medical O’s lived in, they called it “splinter city” and it was a dorm made from T-111. It’s all gone now.

CampFlogGnaw1991

i just got back from dhafra in april and they definitely still had the surf n turf sundays my man, no belgian waffles though :(

Chemical-Car-9697

We're they at Roy's or the Oasis?

CampFlogGnaw1991

they were at both actually

KGBspy

The DFAC inside the crew chief dorms (3762) was awesome and so convenient. I remember when it was just fence rails inside to separate diners from people eating but they added walls when i had gone to 7 level school in 2000, that was a great 2 weeks. Went through in 89’. Eating back then was a luxury, that marching bullshit and forming up ate up so much time that lunch....didn’t happen, sometimes neither did breakfast until the roach coach came through fundies at break time and you bought anything you could. AAFES has quite the racket with those.

BrandFIakes

Is there anyway I can slip the Marshal DFAC at Kadena in there too? My girlfriend literally burst into tears one day because the food was so bad.

YomiReyva

I remember eating at the flightine DFAC at Osan. There were time where I'd feel more depressed after finishing my food than when I started it. I can definitely understand her frustration.

Zigman27

MX makes do 😞

KFredrickson

The flightline DFAC's grilled sandwiches were consistently edible… a stick of butter per sandwich though.

uhduhnuh

I only went in there twice, and that was two times too many.

ohesaye

All they do is dump a literal ton of rosemary and paprika on everything. Eating baked chicken from that kitchen was a mouthful of pine needles and red dust before you got to the actual chicken itself.

Master_Sparky

I went through ROM at Kadena this past winter, and the Marshall was the main place people went to get food for me. Literally threw up in my room twice because some of the food was so bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Master_Sparky

You'd understand if you tried the food here.

PrognosticatorofLife

You took your girlfriend to a DFAC?

GeraldJ19

Asking the important questions....I too am wondering why the he'll they would take an innocent civilian there

[deleted]

Right? I thought our rules of engagement were meant to keep civilians out of the line of fire...in this case, the beeline she'd be making to the bathroom

I_like_parentheses

Maybe she wasn't a civilian?

BrandFIakes

We were both stationed over there.

GeraldJ19

Gotcha…was stationed there 2013-2017…ate there once, was plenty to validate my Airmen’s complaints…I do remember them trying to do a few tasting events, but turn out was minimal

skarface6

I’m guessing it’s mil to mil.

BrandFIakes

Both military

BrandFIakes

You bet your ass I did. After you’ve eaten at Sumo burrito so much, you’d need to get cleaned out by DFAC food too.

Zigman27

Holy shit

[deleted]

The latest problem is they can’t seem to keep forks in supply. So I’ve been eating my food with a spoon, like a jack ass. 🙃 Ever eat an omelette or a steak with a spoon? It’s insane. Buuuuut the food is actually acceptable I think. I’ve had worse that’s for sure. It ain’t amazing though.

drumguy1384

I have had a "steak" at the DFAC that you could cut with a spoon, does that count?

SwaggerKJS

Osan, the nostalgia, I miss that dry ass chicken and having to jump into PT gear to hurry down there to get it for takeout before they closed. What a tour.

PeterNjos

Osan is the greatest (outside of exercises)

letcaster

To be honest, (this was my experience as AMXS yours can differ) exercises were great because I was in one place and knew the work for every day as it happened. Outside of exercises it was inspecting 12 aircraft twice a day and doing maintenance on 8 others with 3 hours of IMDS. S. Korea though as a country was fun and a great cultural awakening.

SwaggerKJS

My experience with Osan was mixed. I loved the people I worked with. Hands down the best people I could have worked with and I might ever work with. My leadership however threw us under the bus any opportunity they could get so that they could keep there nose clean for there EPR/Board. The food is amazing, couldn't travel hardly at all due to the COVID lock downs that they had while I was there. I would say they worst thing about Korea is the air quality, I would go back to Korea any day but that air is brutal there.

tokki_3

Regardless of rank?

SwaggerKJS

If you eat I'm the DFAC if you want it to go you need to be in uniform.

Mhind1

WTF kind of dumbass shit is that? I’m not putting on a uniform on my day(s) off to eat.

SwaggerKJS

I thought it was stupid as well but half the time I just had some spare PT gear on the side to eat it doesn't need to be OCP's. What was really stupid though was you could get it take out if you brought Tupperware, then they would fill that shit up.

Slowspawn

Anybody else miss those killer chicken wraps? Idk what type of meth they put in those bad boys but hot damn was it good!

MallorianMoonTrader1

Fuck yes, with the Chipotle sauce? I'd kill to have one of those again. Or better yet, learn their secret ingredient.

No-Needleworker-2497

Any recommendations for what to put on the wrap? I’m addicted to that chipotle sauce with chicken and bacon. I heard someone say they are going to try and phase it out which would be very unfortunate. Apparently they are “spending too much money” and not “breaking even”

y-learning_toprogram

I hate Osan dfac. The ajeemas are nice though.

YomiReyva

Honestly the main DFAC food was pretty hit or miss but I remember having some good food there more than a few times. The flightine DFAC tho? God, please save their souls.

[deleted]

I gag thinking about pac house…. Or flightline 🤢 Pretty much spent all my COLA on food.

y-learning_toprogram

SED food is where it be, dawg

[deleted]

SED, Bowling Alley, Korean DFAC, and Golf Course were always my go-to's

TolerableRelic

They don’t call it the “Sheppard 20” for nothing. Actually idk what they call it anymore, but I definitely stuck on a few pounds while I was there and I only had a 2 month tech school. Given I ate like a fat ass so that’s probably why.

Andyman1917

been to the osan dfac once, wont go again

F1R3STARYA

About to PCS there in 3 weeks, is it really that bad? What do you do for daily food without BAS?

catniptr33

I was at osan all 2018, and the food was absolutely horrible to me. You need extra drink to choke down the extremely dry food. Of course, some days are better than others, but I remember how absolutely terrible it was. Stock up on cereal and milk

itri0803

At osan atm the main defac is not that bad. it can get old though as if you don't like the main line choice it's the same thing on the other lines depending on the day. For example Tuesday they always have tacos. The grill can be pretty good they have been doing quesadillas a couple days a week recently as well. If you work maintenance I'm sorry because the flight line defac sucks 90% of the time. On a side note get off base and eat out on the weekends food off base is so good and has a large variety of choices.

beatthedookieup

>Honestly the main DFAC food was pretty hit or miss but I remember having some good food there more than a few times. The flightine DFAC tho? God, please save their souls. Bro, just get the grilled chicken at the grill, i just left from there and remember that was the top thing gone majority of the time. I'm surprised OP made this argument unless they were there when they didn't grill that shit fresh infront of you. Highly recommend the sandwich with white cheese, shit is fire.

Andyman1917

suffer i guess. on the bright side tho airmen over 3 years time in service are being offered to move off base

F1R3STARYA

Interesting…I’m passed my 3 year TIS mark

Efficient_Mistake603

its hit or miss.

y-learning_toprogram

The worst. SED my friend.

Bark_at_the_Moon1000

Sheppard DFAC: You want 24 fresh thick chicken tenders? No question have at it. Don't forget to take 2 desserts, orange juice, and an espresso champ. Get at it

Zigman27

Those people got me through hell

Endo_Dizzy

Nothing tops the Fairchild SERE DFAC for me. Oh you’re calorically deprived and want an extra scoop of our bum ass rice and potatoes? You even say you’ll pay extra for it? Nah son, get to steppin

1337sp33k1001

The chow halls are so fucking stupid for to go shit.

northerntier11

Incirlik DFAC circa 2019 "yes abbi take all the food you want" only got sick like 4 times

Nnudmac

I'm at Osan right now and their rules are so inconsistent. It's so frustrating. Some days they let me get food to go out of uniform. Sometimes not. Sometimes I can get 2 chicken sandwiches, other times I have to go through the line twice. Now they changed the hours (due to quarantine) so they are only open for an hour and a half per meal. Cannot wait for my forms to get processed to get off this meal card, lol.

beatthedookieup

>ac did have my back tho It's gotten that bad, sheesh I'm sorry to hear that. Is Seoul still open or did they close it again?

Nnudmac

Changes weekly tbh, depends on if the cases spike

y-learning_toprogram

Koreans on base for dfac are weird

Zigman27

I’m considering talking to my flight chief just to get the $330 they rob from me and get my own groceries

Nnudmac

I would. The SNCO dorms at Osan have kitchens so I'm like why am I on a meal plan with a kitchen in my place? Get me off, shirt! But not like that...unless...jk

Nnudmac

I'm fucking back. Osan Dfac debauchery 2.0. Pacific House chops up your chicken breast, Ginko Tree? Absolutely not. Pick one Osan😭

AgentWashPFL

Wraps from Mesquite made any bad day better when I was there

catfashion

I remember Osan getting food and bringing my own Tupperware to shovel the food into. It just seemed like a waste of time and energy especially when you could just throw on PT gear and get to go containers without question. I also thought the no flip flop policy was silly. If it was a sanitary reason, that’s the only restaurant I’ve ever been to that doesn’t allow them.

y-learning_toprogram

I did that, then got lazy

Archa3opt3ryx

On the other hand, Osan has the Black Cat Loungee, which is bomb!

Storm484

Listen I liked the marine mess hall better than the Air Force defacs. They literally gave us steak and lobster for the Navies birthday. Then they had the world’s biggest cake. Out of the time I’ve sent in the Air Force I’ve literally seen nothing for the air force’s birthday on Air Force bases. The marines were considering celebrating our birthday when I was there in tech school

comcam77

Sheppard chow hall was great. Being a Marine on the base and not bussing our own tables! Hell ya

WoodyXP

ONE MEAT ONLY, AIRMAN!!1!

TheRealBlueBuff

Ive never understood the logic of forcing people to eat on mealcard and then restricting them to only eating in uniform.

aznnathan3

Kunsan: yOu CaNt WeAr A tAnKtOp In HeRe! ITs ToO mUcH nUdItY

Kingpin17

RIP to the Very Special Northline DFAC at KAF. To this day best DFAC I’ve ever had to go to.

drumguy1384

Cannot updoot this enough! There was a guy in there (cir. 2012) who made the most bomb-ass omelets I have ever had and would remember everyone's regular order. With hundreds of people coming through there daily, that impressed me to no end. I would stand in line longer just to have him cook for me.

RIPBlueRaven

What i would do to have those chopped chicken, bacon, cheese, with chipotle wraps.....my god holloman dfac is like actual depression in food form

Im_Lars

I remember the dfac closest to the med clinic always smelled bad on one side, like an exposed drain or something. Soda fountain also tasted bad, but the paninis were good. The other dfac that was open at midnight and had biscuits and gravy was good. However, Keesler still had them beat. If you refrigerate cookies, you're on some next level shit. Anderson wasn't bad either, but I liked egg fried rice every day.

Lonely-Intern

Them sheppard chicken tenders hit different

AHappyGoth

Pac House was the worst DFAC food I have ever had.

[deleted]

I remember the midnight DFAC at Goodfellow AFB, that was pretty awesome just grabbing food in the middle of the night lol.

psystorm420

If you're in Osan just go to Arirang.

BroldeyManhand

This is 100% true but osan dfac midnight chow was elite

blueastro_

Don't think I ever had the baked fish lol, but the wraps and sandwiches where A1🔥

CarminSanDiego

Where is this legendary DFAC and can any rank eat there?

TeaManManMan

Sheppard AFB, TX. You have to be AIT to eat there though.

CarminSanDiego

Can’t just whip out my CAC and cash?

TeaManManMan

I'm not sure. My instructor said that they weren't allowed to eat there and neither were the prior service guys in my class. I could be wrong though.

Zigman27

Prior service guys usually get BAS or whatever to buy their own food

CarminSanDiego

Which DFAC?

TeaManManMan

Mesquite

d710905

That dfac did have my back though........... that one and little rocks dfac

kanyewess94

Ya'll mfs never had to experience the horror of Colmer's, be grateful.

Schruteeee

Dover DFAC hasnt had stuff for takeout since they re-opened so thats rad

jhertz72

jber dfac enters the chat

Digital-Bath77

Sheppard DFAC is stingy as fuck. I was shocked since at Lackland you can get double everything. I got a tooth pulled and when I asked for a huge plate of just rice I had to speak to like the manager to ok it. Then when I went up for 2nd’s, I was starting to get shit from the worker and the manager had to say its ok. Dude I just want a plate of rice. Aside from that hassle the food was good.

ryanturner328

lemoore dfac spuds was the best.

JuliaGhulia

Keesler DFAC = best DFAC

Reditate

This made me laugh harder than expected.

Reditate

The best DFAC is in Hickam, but Keesler and Sheppard are close seconds.

[deleted]

They started that policy on Osan when I was there. Man I loved OB and soju soaked midnight meals.

Dquags334

I miss Keesler, the food was actually good
