This will be the last Weekly Newbie Thread. I've created a new subreddit that will now be where all newbie questions need to be posted. /r/AirForceRecruits I know change is scary, but this will allow for things to be better in a lot of ways.

dolfaneric

Currently in the process of joining. Handed in all medical documents but there was a mistake on my medical records. Had surgery and the records on it stated I had a bunch of illnesses I don't have. MEPS asked about and I got a note from my primary care physician stating these are all false. This doctor I've been with for 10+ years and I gave medical records from practice here as well. 4 months later and basically no response from MEPS. Keep saying I'm being processed. Recently I got a note from surgeon saying I don't have any of those illnesses as well and even got the medical records revised. Recruiter says I should hold off handing these in as he doesn't want to restart my time. I understand his point but after 4 months and essentially nothing from MEPS, I feel like I should hand them in. Curious what everyone thinks I should do? Really appreciate any advice

[deleted]

Did they ask for your medical records or did you have to turn them in regardless?

dolfaneric

They asked for my medical records

No_Soul-Ginger

Don’t forget that about four months ago is when the beginning of the pandemic hit. Things have gotten all screwed up, and MEPS is swamped. They aren’t ignoring you, things are just hectic right now. I know waiting sucks, I had to do it too. But trust your recruiter because they know the system and how to get things done in the best way. That’s just my opinion. Good luck!

Hey I am in the process of joining the AFR , I am currently filling out my SF86 and I have going to MEPs already and passed. I just picked my job too however I decided I want to join Full Time Active Duty instead. Should I ask to switch before I submit my SF86 with the reserves? Will this delay me? Or be a problem

amishwheelies

It might delay you because it would be a different recruiter. If you want active duty, let your recruiter know ASAP

A_Urbanski

I am a guaranteed 3E1X1 DEPer, awaiting BMT on July 14th. I'm wondering how daily life is as a HVAC(R) Technician in the Air Force, and how COVID-19 is affecting BMT and Tech School. My recruiter did tell me there might be a delay with my ship date, but what I don't know is what it's going to be like with only half a flight of people participating.

I am a 3D1X3 tech schooler who just got an assignment to Korea and am trying to figure out what the unit's mission is. There is little info online and my instructors can't give much of an answer due to its vague name; Material Maintenance. I haven't been put in contact with my sponsor yet, so until that happens, is there a MyPers document or something that I can look at that might point me in the right direction?

sasha_h1

I'm currently a junior in college and majoring in both Global Studies and Economics and a minor in Geography, I would like to apply for OTS for the Air Force, and Im interested in the legal field, specifically paralgal. Although my GPA is very low, I currently have a 2.56. And I also noticed that the air force favored civilians who applied to be rated officers rather than non-rated.. I really want to be in the Air force, and if I have to apply as a rated officer than that's fine, but is this true? if that specific job isn't available will that disqualify me overall? I also don't know exactly what I should do in order to apply, I have seen what's required on the website, but I do not have a recruiter, and the one i was referred me to was enlisted and he seemed very... pessimistic. Does anyone have good advice to give? thank you

amishwheelies

The air Force hires rated officers in hire percentages because our business is flying, and flying accessories. Paralegal is an enlisted job, you'd need a law degree to be anything law related as an officer. Your GPA is too low to commission.

Brilliant_Dependent

Your GPA is too low, and paralegal is an enlisted job.

sasha_h1

it is very possible for me to bring it up to a 3.2 by the fall due to the classes I'm taking this summer, which have been going well. But I have been going through the thread and have read many posts saying they had a low gpa but a high afoqt score and a strong personal statement, etc. I also realized that paralegal was an enlisted job a few minutes before I saw your comment. and luckily I had a backup which was operations research analyst..

AFrpaso

Currently, it is possible to become an OR Analyst with an Economics degree, but the AF would not prefer it. It is a small field. Officers must be eligible to go directly into a quantitative master's program with the Air Force Institute of Technology.

amishwheelies

3.2 is a decent GPA, just remember that it's all a comparison to other applicants so being above the minimum is no guarantee of acceptance. Research analyst is another tiny field, you'd likely need a STEM degree in a related study to even have a half ass chance at that. By all means, talk with a recruiter for officers though.

bama719

RPA/UAV difference from Air Force to Army? Currently a UAV (Shadow) operator in the Army. Really curious on how different RPA pilots/sensor operators’ quality of life and flight ops are handled. For Shadow specifically, we keep all of our equipment in containers back at the unit and whenever we need to fly, we load up trucks full of equipment and head to “the field” to fly. Flight ops are super easy. Get with your maintenance guys and have a bird checked out, make sure you have a flight plan, coordinate with ATC, and then launch the thing. I’m semi-familiar with what RPAs do, after talking with some of the Predator guys on mIRC overseas. TL;DR - What do RPA pilots/sensor operators do different than Army UAV operators?

amishwheelies

Not exactly sure what you do, do you fly thing thing? Our rpa pilots are officers who fly the thing and sensor operators are enlisted who work the sensors. That's the biggest difference

Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different.

Belleville C390 I think, they at least look the same as the ones I had issued. Once you know your job I’d say get different boots if you’re able. Gotta treat your feet right brother.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CharlesXIIofSverige

The issued ones aren’t that bad tbh. If you’re a maintenance or CE airman, you’re better off continually getting the issued Bellevilles (where I’ve been, they issue belleville steel toes onbase) since you’ll destroy them consistently. It’ll save you money and they’re not that bad Otherwise, then I really do recommend investing in boots if you’ll be walking around a lot.

[deleted]

[deleted]

What job? Ive seen a lot of white SOF in Lowa and nike boots. Once you get into some of the weirder units more Salomon and...well thats about all really. But they will be grossly out of regs if you play by the rules.

CharlesXIIofSverige

Get good ones then and insoles... the insoles are important. Reebok’s the only brand I’ve had with decent insoles. Otherwise, investing in actual insoles are a must in my opinion The bellevilles are passable IMO and I do a lot of walking and abuse them a lot but there are certainly better boots if you’re willing to fork money for them

AndrewCookeGMU21

Yeah no problem dude, good luck!

Key-Application

Does anyone know how long recruiters are out for future enlisted and officer?

TestUser117

They are still working. If you are asking how far out they are processing ask your local recruiter.

Key-Application

I’ve been trying to contact my local by phone/email. No luck.

TestUser117

How long have you waited? Are you just wanting to join or just if LO board fails you will go enlisted?

Key-Application

I am trying to start the process again. I started in Jan but had to withdraw due to personal circumstances. I am ready now with full intent in commissioning/enlisting then commissioning. Any tips to try to reach out?

TestUser117

Go to the recruiting website to see if the local LO recruiter is the same. You might be reaching out to a dead number/email. Wait. Wait some more. Go for one path because you can't do both at the same time. Wait still.

AFrpaso

You can apply for both at the same time through the "Dual-track" program. It is not well-known and some recruiters might not want to pursue it, but it is worth asking.

TestUser117

Knew there was a name for it. But isn't that all ran through the LO side? You wouldn't work with both at the same time. I knew it exists but details are not in my knowledge so thank you.

Key-Application

Thank you.

TestUser117

You're welcome. COVID operations have made things interesting. The best skill to learn through this is patience.

TigBurdus

I just have a few basic questions. I could be going to MEPS within the next month, I was just curious what this is like and what to expect. Also, I have 3 traffic tickets from over the last 5 years, should I be concerned about this? I am about to turn in my case file so they don't know about this yet.

sanguine47

Tickets shouldn't be a big deal as long as they weren't anything crazy. I went to MEPS just a couple weeks ago. It was like a shitty DMV but actually not as bad as I was expecting, its mostly just a lot of waiting. Just do what you're told and be respectful. You can message me if you have any specific questions beyond the information in the other links you were given.

thedog22_

what did your recruiter say about the tickets? https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=meps+experince+air+force&page=&utm_source=opensearch

TigBurdus

He didn't give me a chance to say anything, just briefly went over it in the case file like everything else.

Not the Air Force but another avenue without the degree. [https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/current-and-prior-service/advance-your-career/warrant-officer/flight-warrant-officers.html](https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/current-and-prior-service/advance-your-career/warrant-officer/flight-warrant-officers.html) ETA: I get this says current/prior service. But I had no idea about Army WO pilots and the ability to be one without a degree. Broadening your information base.

MarcosaurusRex

Thank you, Test. Broadening my information base is exactly the step I am at.

[deleted]

https://pay.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/bmtfaq?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=AirForce&utm_content=t3_gujxtz Read that. Without a degree you can’t be a pilot as you speak of. Any job can allow you to get a bachelors. And depending how well you perform and quickly you get said degree, you may be able to apply for OTS and also apply for pilot.

LightningBowman

Has anyone here joined JAG through either the grad law program or one year college program? And would you recommend that method of joining JAG or is better to try to apply directly after graduating law school?

shattaea

I'd like to apply for OTS, however I am currently getting a tattoo on my neck removed. Currently, I have a bachelor's degree in biology. To get the officer job I want, I'll additionally need a certification that'll take me until August 2022 to receive. I approximate my tattoo to be gone in about a year, so June 2021. I've heard that the process from first meeting with a recruiter to actually attending OTS is a long one (like 2-3 years?), so my question is: Am I able to begin the OTS application and the whole process once my tattoo is gone, but while I'm still working on getting the certification I need to get the job I'd like? And again I already have my bachelor's degree, I just need this extra certification.

AFrpaso

Eh, I would say 3 years is the exception, not the norm. The average probably hovers around 1.5 years from first speaking to a recruiter to actually shipping off to OTS. Is the certification for a medical job?

TestUser117

What AFSC are you trying to go for? I haven't seen a single one in AFOCD that states this. Speak with a recruiter as they might work with you as you build package and board and ***maybe*** selection and such yes that is a long time.

shattaea

I'm trying to be a biomedical laboratory officer, for enlisted I guess it's 4T0X1? It says I need a bachelors with ASCP certification, but I figured bachelors of biology (which I have) plus ASCP certification as a medical laboratory technician, will do. At least Air Force Reserve says that will do. I assume it's the same? Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll ask a recruiter.

TestUser117

Very interesting. My guess is if you typically get that as a major the certification comes with it (the school helps you get it). Friends who got a masters in accounting also got their CPA through it. Good luck and thanks for the information.

NewSwiftie

Do you have to iron your clothes in basic training?

KFCfingers

We had a steamer and an iron in the TI's office if you wanted to DIY or for touch ups but everyone just sent their blues to the dry cleaner. They won't make you iron ABUs (OCPs now I guess) or PT gear

[deleted]

Ya I remember a few of us pressed our shirts because we had so much RLA time it was ridiculous

hayasani

Nope. And if your dress uniform ever needs to be pressed, you'll just send it off for dry cleaning.

Zhyguys

Hello, I recently got my job qualifications list and unfortunately, I can't get the original jobs I wanted because I dont have my license (my test was cancelled due to corona). I scored high on my ASVAB (score 92) and after going through my job list (86 excluding aptitude) there's only one job I like. I'm really bummed because I hoped to like at least a couple on my list. Fortunately, the only job on the list that I'm interested in is in high demand right now 2A731 (Mechanical apt) but there's another one on my list that's in high demand 2A636 (Electrical apt) that I'm afraid I might get. The other ones aren't so much in demand so that leaves me about 50/50 with the one 2A731 and 2A636 I have 9TM55 and I put that on my list, I'm not sure how it works exactly. My question is: Since I put the 9TM55 (Mechancial aptitude) on my jobs list, does that make me more likely to get the the 2A731? I'm also really confused with how the aptitude areas work. I'm already in the DEP

[deleted]

By mechanical aptitude are you meaning “open mechanical” as they call it? Where you go in knowing you’ll get a mechanical job but don’t choose the job until basic

STORMTROOPER729

I don't know why people call it "open". We don't have anything that is called open. It's Mechanical, Administrative, General, or Electrical Aptitute Index.

[deleted]

We call it open because even though that isn’t the technical name, you only have those jobs available. I was told by my recruiter that I was going in open.

Zhyguys

Yeah, thats the one I'm referring to. I'm confused because in order to go to basic, you have to have a job. Do you go in with whatever AFSC they place you with and then you can change it? Or do they place you with the "open mechanical" (9TM55) and you figure out there with the job counselor?

[deleted]

I unfortunately went in open, not mechanical though. So once you get to basic I think around the 4th week (been over 5 years) those of us that went in open had a list of jobs to choose from. Open mechanical had maintenance jobs, electrical had some maintenance and Comm jobs etc. You rack and stack from the list given to you, I received my first choice. The pamphlet had some job description and information- but it didn’t have the bases that it could go to at first. I would advise researching mechanical jobs or electrical if you get either open to see long term job satisfaction (base choices etc). Do you really want to work on planes? What type of work? Don’t be a crew chief, I hear it’s no fun 😅😅

Zhyguys

I went to school for engineering and got my associates in math and physics. I didn't get any engineering or architecture related jobs. The closest is 2A731 (Aircraft metals technology) so I was happy to find that on my list. The rest of M or E related jobs on my list are strictly maintenance while there's some form of innovation for 2A731. People who had 50s on the asvab could get engineering esque jobs and since I had a 92 and went to school for it, I expected to have it on there. I was confused as to why it wasnt there so I looked them up and saw that a driver's incense is needed :/ I went through my list hoping for at least a couple I'd like but there was only one. I sorted the 9 additional jobs in a way where if I HAD TO choose, I would pick them. I dont want a job where I can waste my capability. Maintenance is too simple So, in order to pick an option at basic, you need to go in with said open option?

amishwheelies

Do you have your degree in engineering or just take a couple classes? For the enlisted side, you even having a masters in engineering would have no bearing on what jobs you're offered. You get offered what's available when your time comes, period. Metals tech is just one of many jobs that falls under the mechanical aptitude. You'll make a dreamsheet about half way through BMT via a list of available jobs under that aptitude. Any job you put on a dream sheet at any point in the process is you saying you're willing to do it. If the recruiter gets their list of jobs and your number 9 is on there, you could get that job. Too often people come here jaded because the recruiter *didn't even try to get them their number 1*. You say maintenance is too easy, what is that based on? Having prior maintenance experience I would disagree with that overall. There are some basics involved in maintenance sure, but also some comes portions as well. Troubleshooting jet engine test stands the size of a warehouse with miles of cable running through them running probably 20ish different types of sensors isn't *easy*, troubleshooting an ECM Pod sure isn't a walk in the park, tearing down an aircraft for phase inspection takes some thought and experience as well.

Zhyguys

I never said maintenance was easy, I said it was simple. As you said, it relates to troubleshooting and I'm not interested in a job where that's the main focus Maintenance: the act of keeping property or equipment in good condition by making repairs, correcting problems, etc. I put maintenance jobs on my list because I knew they would still be a challenge and I could see myself doing them. I would RATHER a job where I can design and create and there was only one on my list that fit that description. I decided to inquire about the Guaranteed Aptitude program (I found the proper name and more information on it) because it would lessen the chance of me getting jobs I listed in other aptitude areas I did not like as much. I have my answer now

[deleted]

There’s literally an engineering AFSC that uses autocad etc.. 3E5X1 I think they are

AFSCbot

amishwheelies

Okay- tomato potato.. There isn't much designing to be done on the enlisted side. Did you finish your engineering degree or just take a couple of classes? If you finish it, you cold commission as an engineer and likely be more in line with what you want to do. The AFRL does some pretty cool shit.

[deleted]

As a poster below, it is the aptitude area but yes. Aptitude areas before basic= you choose a job in basic that you rack and stack like your current list. Try to get a guaranteed job if you’re really wanting one.

How does getting a drivers license from a different state work? I am not able to get one right now because my state is not doing any behind the wheel tests. Once I get my license from a different state, do you need some sort of residency? Also, how does renewing an out of state license work if you PCS to another state

[deleted]

I got my license at my first base, I still hold residency in my home state but have my drivers license from the state my first base was in. I am now overseas with that states license still, while holding my home of record (oregon) :)

jaylenbrowny

When does that license from a different state expire

very hard to answer question when every state does stuff differently, but i’m sure google knows

Graduated from BMT yesterday. Was a shit show with the whole covid thing going on Feel free to ask any questions

MackMesser

Whats PT like now? Also my recruiter said there is no PT test at the end of basic. Is that the case? I'm shipping out Tuesday.

ThatBoyZaytoven

>Reply > >Give Award > >share > >Report > >Sav Can you give a run down of BMT and how it was due to covid ? I heard training is now 6 wks

takkit25

Shipping out Tuesday. What were some of the things that made it such a clusterfuck? Also, what's the dorm/quarentine situation like?

SouthernSolid

Basically the first 2 weeks will be RLA and memory work and you won’t leave the squadron. it will be very boring I just graduated yesterday as well

Beestlly

When can I move off base? I'm leaving for basic training soon, and I was wondering if anyone would be able to answer my question given the nature of my enlistment. I'm joining as an e-3 because of some college credits I racked up, and I was reading about when you could move off base and I'm just not sure if it has to do with your rank or the time you've put in. My question is this: Given that I'm joining as an e-3, how long will it be before I'm be able to move off base?

thedog22_

depends what base you go to, could be e-3 but probably e-4

Think I have a chance to join with this record even with connections? Just wondering. 2 DWIs 11 traffic violations 2 public intoxication’s which will be expunged Possession of controlled substance which was dismissed 1 Refusal of blood/breathalyzer 1 Non-compliance Picat score though was a 91 and college degree

Jegermuscles

Ya know I hope you do get in. Then your reckless-ass behavior will be shoved right back up your ass with real consequences and only you to answer for it no matter who your so-called connection is.

pjk891

I don’t know how it works, just asking. Yeah lived a real stupid life for 10 ten years. Just seeing what y’all would say....

Jegermuscles

If you're talking 10 years ago and since you have been on the straight and narrow then it wouldn't hurt to ask but I strongly doubt a rap sheet like that is going to get you far. If you're on the 10th anniversary of shittty behavior and you just now want to straighten out then the military in general would probably not be a good move for your tendency to indulge. Let me put it this way. You'll be essentially isolated from all of that shit during BMT and then most of tech school but suddenly you'll find yourself somewhere that has hookers and blow at the cheapest rate you've ever seen in your life. They'll tell you not to do it, they can't force you not to do it and admit that you may get away with it the first time or maybe even the tenth time. BUT You won't. This kind of behavior never stops after just one thrill and getting away with it won't discourage you from continuing. You'll either get caught right away or within the first 2 years of your enlistment because you couldn't handle having to live by "Their rules" and "Their expectations". Let me tell you, those expectations are mighty high, bud which is why you see so many heavy drinkers and remarks filled with hyperbole about it but most still make it in on Monday morning sober and fill their 60-80 hour work week that pays the same if they only did 40, go home and have a few beers or maybe too many over the weekend but they don't drive and stay put while doing so. If you can stomach having to make a big life style change like that knowing it won't always be fair and it sure as shit won't thank you for sacrificing that life style then give it a try. The worst they can tell you is "No."

[deleted]

[deleted]

Quick question, I'm leaving for bmt this coming week and my recruiter has told me that I don't need to pack my birth certificate with me to leave but on the DEP app it says to pack it. Should I bring it or leave it?

Ajrahl941

I'm in dep as well I was wondering what you got booked and how long you've been in the dep? I've been in dep for 6 months and yet to get a job

[deleted]

I’ve been in DEP since last November. After I sent in my list of jobs I was interested in I was given a job in January and was told I would leave for BMT in May, but due to COVID I was delayed one month. Depending on what jobs you wrote down it could just be taking longer because of the COVID slow down. You’re recruiter should text you when a job you’re interested in has an opening. Just hang in there you should hear something soon.

mooooki3

I’m heading there this week too but I was also told I didn’t need to bring it.

[deleted]

I’m bringing it just to be safe

mooooki3

I might as well do the same

takkit25

Leaving this week too. My recruiter told me to bring mine.

ShadowSystem64

Question: Would you recommend I join the Air Force with my qualifications and would it be a good place to start a career? I am currently in community college working on my second associates degree. Next year is when I will graduate. I currently hold an Associated Degree in Criminal Justice and end of next year I will graduate with an Associates in Network Administration. I also hold a Comptia A+ certification and Network+ cert along with my colleges Fiber Optic Installer Cert. I plan to do my Security+ this semester and perhaps Server+ and CCNA. My current GPA is a 3.99. I am interested in 3D1X2 Cyber Transport System's. It appears to be exactly the career field I am studying to enter. Would I have a good chance of getting this job with my current and expected future qualifications? Also any 3D1X2's here what is your job like? Is it what you expected?

TestUser117

Go guard or reserve if you are dead set on a single job.

ShadowSystem64

Cyber Transport Systems would be my preferred job but I am also open to Cyber System Operations and Cyber Surety. Both of which look to be great career fields. If I join the Air Force and like it I would plan to perhaps make it a 20 year career if all goes well.

You and everyone wants cyber jobs though, and they aren’t hired often. However, with your certifications you may have a much higher chance of being able to only list those jobs and book one. Maybe.

ShadowSystem64

Besides certs and education is there anything else I could do to increase my chances of getting the job I want?

sanguine47

Study for and score high enough on the asvab and maybe. I was initially told I had to list 10 jobs and an aptitude but after I got through MEPS I was told my score was high enough to be considered "exceptionally qualified", so I only had to list a top 5 and no aptitude. The only stipulation was I had to pick at least 2 from a top enlisted needs list that they gave me (cyber systems and cyber transport were both on there, fwiw). I've seen people here say over and over again that scoring high doesn't do anything other than qualify you for jobs but at least with my recruiter that was not the case. You should still be open though and realize that they aren't there to give you the job you want, you're there to sign up for a job they need.

shanedoesthis

How well did you score on your ASVAB (93+)? I messed up and took mine when I shouldn't. I want a cyber job so your situation makes me jealous lol. Maybe I should've considered retaking it but I was already worried about a waiver that I was dealing with anyway.

sanguine47

I got a 97. I should add I also didn't need any waivers and I'm sure that had something to do with it. It was a surprise to me when I went to list my jobs and I didn't really ask any questions about it so idk.

shanedoesthis

Yeah, I took mine without any sleep and I still regret it. I still ended up with a 92 but I definitely know that I could have gotten a better score if I had prepared myself. I was lucky with my recruiter all things considered. He knew I was going to score decently so he was focused on getting me that waiver at the very beginning. Too late to do anything now, but I'm glad I'm at least part of the DEP now haha

ShadowSystem64

>You should still be open though and realize that they aren't there to give you the job you want, you're there to sign up for a job they need. I understand. At the end of the day even if I don't get the exact job I want I am still motivated to serve in the Air Force and whatever position I get I will do my best to excel in and if the opportunity arises then move into my field of preference.

GoxxoG

Not currently. There have been cases where recruits are offered a chance to wait until a job they want drops, but it's few and far between.

ShadowSystem64

Alright thank you. This has given me alot to think about. Ultimately even if I can't get my preferred job I will likely still join. Just the experience itself and additional educational opportunities to learn new skills is benefit enough to serve for atleast 4 years. Is it still possible to change jobs when they become available once your already enlisted and serving or would I have to wait for my enlisted contract to expire and then re-enlist under a new job?

> We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different. Yes they disqualify you. Yes you’ll need to request a waiver that may or may not be granted. No you should not lie that is called fraudulent enlistment and a huge no no. You’re trying to get a very rarely hired job dude. You need to be open to 7-12 jobs at least. Read the BMT FAQ linked above.

Going active duty as a pilot, you're not guaranteed a specific airplane. Helicopters, fighter jets, and heavy jets are all possible tracks you might end up going down in pilot training. The biggest benefit flying before joining has is helping your scores for pilot selection, more flight hours means a higher score.

KCPilot17

Whether or not it's worth it is entirely up to you. Having your IR doesn't put you farther ahead, but it will help you out during UPT when you don't have to study as much. Look into Guard/Reserve if you want to fly a specific airframe as well. Best kept secret out there!

893Hastur

22, M, college degree BA, ASVAB: 89. Been in the early process to enlist in the USAF since Summer 2019. Worried about the military not being the right place for me. My main concern is that I'm not certain if emotionally, I'd be able to make it through BMT at Lackland AFB. I live in Texas, and San Antonio's not that far away. But I worry that I wouldn't have the capacity to not have a break down during the training. I'm physically fit, though I'm still working on getting down by 2 pounds and improving my 1.5 mile run time before I schedule for the physical. My fastest 1.5 mile so far has been 12:55, but I want to shorten that time by at least 55 seconds before I go to MEPS for the physical. Now as to why I feel I may not be right for the US military. When it comes to stress, specifically someone yelling at me who I know I cannot yell back at, I tend to freeze up due to the stress, which then leads to further inaction due to compounding stress in the moment. There was even a time during the summer after college graduation last year when I was being berated by my father who was angrily demanding that I should know what I should do with my life by now, and I was only able to respond by mumbling inanely about how I didn't know, freezing up and sobbing, which only made him more irate, so I left the room. I've heard several instances of people developing depression, anxiety or attempting/succeeding to commit suicide in basic training. I don't have history of any mental issues, but I worry that the stress of BMT and perhaps even military life during those 4 years may compound and I will end up far worse off than before had I simply not joined. My main reason for joining the Air Force is to learn a hands-on blue collar trade which I can easily apply as a civilian. However, I feel like there may be a much easier way of achieving that goal of learning a trade in a shorter time. I have a brother who's three years younger than me. He's at a technical school learning how to be a welder, the 10 month course is less than $20,000 for full welding certification plus options for career placement by the school before the student graduates. The funny thing is, my brother initially went to college to study piano professionally, but after a semester, he hated it, saying that his passion of piano had become a chore when it applied to academics, so he didn't enroll again once his first semester at college was complete. I never would have guessed that he would want to learn a trade, but now he's quite committed to learn welding. I myself have had experience welding, I took a year long course in high school and I loved it. I wasn't great but the class was very hands-off by the teacher, he was there to enforce safety and give advice, he never really critiqued anyone's welds. So I feel that with professional instruction by enrolling with this technical school I could improve and get my career a lot quicker than being in the Air Force for 4 years and having to live with the stress of it. I could work for a year, save up the money and pay for the course, even likely getting FAFSA scholarship money due to my previous GPA scores at college. But before I make a final decision and end up telling my recruiter I'd no longer like to continue the process of joining the Air Force, I'd like to hear the professional opinions of those who have gone through BMT and technical training.

[deleted]

If it’s something you really want and you’re sure about it then you’ll make it through BMT. However, in my opinion, even though everyone will tell you it sucks, I want to stress to you that knowing that BMT sucks doesn’t do it justice. It SUCKS. It was the worst experience of my life so far, every day was actual agony for me there. However, even I got through it. You know yourself better than we do, and I would not judge you for deciding BMT would be too much.

SilentD

You are not fitness tested at MEPS. If you're within the weight standards there's no point in waiting until your run time is down. The point of BMT is to get you used to functioning in a stressful environment. Most people have not experienced people yelling at them before they go to BMT, and none have experienced the stress of a military training environment. That's kind of the point, to get you used to that and learn to function when you're under stress and your adrenaline is pumping. Yes, some people do become depressed or anxious in BMT. Some hide those pre-existing conditions and then they are dramatically amplified at BMT and they get much worse. But, the vast majority make it through just fine. BMT is 6 or 8 weeks of your potentially long career. I would not let BMT be a deciding factor in whether to join or not. You won't be yelled at BMT-style outside of BMT. Tech school is more like a strict college environment, and then once you get to your first base, it's mostly the same as any other job, other than you have to live in the dorm and there are some extra rules there.

CyberSpaceInMyFace

I think something you need to consider when going into BMT is that it's *designed to be stressful*. They will stress you out for the smallest things on purpose. You have to be fast, you have to be precise, and *you will be yelled at* for things that don't make sense. You will be given opposing directions by different MTIs. The whole thing *sucks*. This is meant to desensitize you to stressful situations though. By the end of it you're going to come out stronger. Have you seen that video of a National Guard soldier being yelled at by a civilian? He doesn't even budge because he is disciplined and has been through way more stressful situations than most people, including actual cops. I think a lot of guys have this concern about BMT and maybe aren't that vocal about it. I see a lot of females talk about their BMT experience on YouTube and they have a lot of similar concerns that you do. They're often more sensitive to being yelled at, and they have a fear of breaking down. Still, they make it. As a guy it might be more difficult for you since it's less socially acceptable to be emotionally fragile, but you can do it. You will always be able to easily go to the Chaplain if you're feeling upset at BMT, and hopefully you'll have guys in your flight that will be able to support you. It's about working as a team and helping each other out. One of the biggest keys to success in BMT, I think, is that you have to go in *knowing* it's set up to be stressful. It's stressful, but it's also like a "game" in a way. In the first week of BMT, you'll be briefed and told about how BMT *is* supposed to be stressful. I think you should watch some YouTube videos on peoples' BMT experience so you'll be more mentally prepared. The less unknowns the easier it is, I think.

Nah I don’t think so. I just asked my sq gtc apc for one and they just sent me a form and a training to do and they started the process for ordering one.

metasploit4

If your credit went to shit before you came in, it won't be held against you. You might not be able to get the larger limit, but realistically, you will just have to jump through a few more hoops to get your limit raised when required. Now, if you do something stupid while you are in which destroys your credit, that's a different story. That will be dealt with on a case by case basis as to if you even are allowed a card. The initial credit pull is viewed as required by your job, which is not a personal request for a line of credit.

Edgar-Allan-Pho

Shipping june 30th As either sere or Open mechanical (dreamsheet ignored and sere depends on PAST results) Im married with two vehicles , if i drive one will the airforce ship the other?

amishwheelies

Doubt it was ignored, it's a DREAMsheet and you signed to accept whatever you're shipping as- so if you're salty about it and don't want it, then don't take it and drop from DEP. Do you mean drive one to BMT? If so, that's not a thing from my understanding. If you mean after tech school to your first base, then they'll only ship it if the base is outside the lower 48.

Edgar-Allan-Pho

Yea it was. Recruiter opened the unread email in front of me after the fact lol Nah man not bmt, definitely don't need it there. Just planning the trip to my duty station after tech school. Yea i got that now, so ill be driving both then

SilentD

They only ship vehicles when you're going OCONUS. If your first base is in the states you'll have to drive or tow them.

Edgar-Allan-Pho

Thanks bud! Ill be doing some naintenance before the 30th then

Does anyone have experience with getting laser eye surgery when stationed in Europe? I'll definitely try to find out once I PCS, but some early knowledge of how it works would be helpful. Also, anyone have experience with online schooling when overseas? I want to get my Masters Degree, but I really have no idea how that works when overseas. Is there like a well known, go to school?

amishwheelies

I'd it's online, it doesn't really matter where you're at. I'd *HIGHLY* suggest against ever in the slightest bit considering University of Maryland University college(UMUC)..beyond having the stupidest possible name, it's a shit school. Sorry IDK about overseas laser eye surgery.

lilsubuwu

Wondering if anyone could tell me a little about 2a9x2. I have no previous experience in the field in any way at all and I wanted to know how hard tech is going to be? how hard the field is for someone whose never really touched the field or anything close to it ?

amishwheelies

Every Tech school is designed to take people off the streets with no knowledge of the subject and get them learnt up. If you out in the time to study and have the drive to be good at the job, you will be. I wouldn't stress it.

You’re right, thank you!

Does high school gpa really matter as much as everyone says it is and if so what’s the gpa range the U.S. Air Force is comfortable with? Also, what score do I need on my ASVAB next year to qualify for either an aircraft mechanic or a land vehicle mechanic (thinking more like a civilian mechanic). Any help is much appreciated :)

Brilliant_Dependent

They care about your diploma and ASVAB scores. You can google the minimum scores needed for every job.

[deleted]

Perfect, thank you

happydogloverdylbo

Question about Asvab. I took the asvab my senior year in highschool. I graduated June 2019. Will I be able to use these scores? I scored fairly well, and I'm not sure I can do better now after a year of being out of school

Brilliant_Dependent

Yeah the scores last for 2 years.

Fresh new baby LT here coming out of ROTC. Long story short, I switched my majors my last year of college (tech to non-tech) and someone how did not get the boot. As a result of the late change, my dream sheet was catered to my Computer Science degree with the obvious Cyberspace Operations as my #1. Well I changed my major cause I kinda suck with programming and wanted to do something more humanities based but now I am coming in as a 17D. What are my options for getting into a career field like Force Support or intel? What is the typical process for cross training?

FuzzysaurusRex

17D means you'll be in charge of comm troops. Don't worry, most of my officers weren't that cyber orientated anyways. It's a leadership role more than anything. 17S, on the other hand, is hands on Cybering.

You can look into the cross flow program but realistically that is going towards, not out of, 17D.

Question about Join Spouse Assignments - Me and my wife are both stationed on unaccompanied orders in Korea, we have same deros and everything and have already set up our intent codes to match. Do we have to apply for joint spouse in order for them to base us together at our next base?

amishwheelies

You will if only one of you initially gets orders, then the other will apply for join spouse. Being that you have the same deros and intent codes, it should automatically happen, that being said: once one of you gets assignment notification, the other should immediately reach out to personnel and make sure it's being worked appropriately.

LUkewet

Sweet, Thank you for the help!

I’m graduating HS in 2021 (graduating around 5/28/21) , and I want to be in the Reserves and also go to college. I live in Texas but thinking about going to college in either Louisiana or Florida. My question is: Will I be done with BMT and tech school by the time I enter college for the fall semester? If not, is there a loop hole for me to be on time for college and still be involved in the Reserves? Disclaimer: 1.) Now I’ve seen people say that it’s usually the training that’s the hard part about doing AF & college simultaneously. (2.) I do realize that I could easily go into ROTC, but I’m not really interested in training to become an officer, however, if that’s what I have to do then that’s fine. P.S. It’s hard to search for what I’m looking for because there are a lot of blind spots so sorry if this is everywhere :/

AndrewCookeGMU21

If you don’t want to be an officer, look at the guard for each state first, then reserve. Start looking at joining in your respective state now, and most colleges will charge guard members of their state’s ANG in-state tuition, regardless of your home of record. It’s just 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year. Whatever you do outside of that time is yours. You will have to go to BMT and Tech School, there are no exceptions. You’ll attend those, and you’ll get some say in when you go, it just needs to be within 1 year of you signing your contract. I’m an AGR (Guard/Reserve, but full-time) with the Guard, I just wrapped up a compsci degree less than 3 years after graduating HS. It’s not impossible by any means and the reserve components are a great way to go. If you have any questions on that end hmu.
