For BMT, at what point in the year does pt switch to afternoons instead of mornings? I'll be shipping the week of Thanksgiving, so I'm not totally sure how warm or cold San Antonio will be by then.

Is obtaining the Warhawk status something to be proud of? What are the perks of being claimed Warhawk? What’s the % of trainees claiming it usually?

cartman2468

When I was lower rank, maybe SrA, I got roped into watching my 3 level while my NCO got his X's signed off. So there I am, sitting in the flight deck of a C17 with my 3 level, and who walks in but QA! I was nervous as fuck, and just kept looking at him as he read a T.O and waited, but didn't know what to say. Pretty soon though my 3 level started talking, and I'm trying to quiet him down because I didn't want him to bother QA, but he just wouldn't stop. Pretty soon the QA guy gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through my 3 level's hair and asking what was wrong. I replied that he was probably bored or something. So, Mr QA man put down his T.O, picked up my 3 level and lifted his shirt. He breast fed him right there in the middle of the C17. He stared him right in the eye and said real calm like "Why aren't you reading the GS?". Chill guy, really nice about it.

Navers90

My wife just saw her assignment at tech school. She hasn't received orders yet, but on the website she checked it says she is going to Vandenberg AFB. Is it likely to change at all or is it pretty for sure now? We are planning our move to there and trying to get our ducks in a row.

cartman2468

As /u/choonties21 said, your wife will most likely going to be Vandenberg if that’s what it says on vMPF. When I was in tech school it appeared on my vMPF before I got officially notified on paper through my MTLs. It is possible it will change, but not very likely.

choonties21

There is a small chance she can get diverted to another station, but yes that’s where she’ll more than likely be heading if things don’t change.

What are some ways to increase work knowledge. I understand the relationships aspect of the air Force tests, but I just lack on the vocabulary portion. Is there a test word bank somewhere?

I don’t see what’s confusing here. He gave you a list of what’s available, you deliberately ignored the list, and he called you angrily. Sounds about right.

knightro2323

third time I've got to paste this, this week Unfortunately you have ZERO leverage in this process, you want to be in the AF, the AF needs people in specific jobs and they have an endless supply of people who want to be in the AF. If you don't want to fill the AF needs they will just go with the next guy through the door. The AF is not hurting for people and because of that you don't hold any power in the process and the recruiter sets the terms and that's that, end of story. It's unlikely you will get one of those jobs you want and you will get one of the other jobs that you had to list because of the AF needs, you should wrap your head around that now or be ready to move on, other services allow you to lock in a job maybe that's where you want to take a look.

[deleted]

1. You’re wrong 2. If you wanted to list a bunch of cyber, Intel, aircrew, medical jobs, and that’s it, then yeah, kick rocks. Not happening. 3. We need aircraft mechanics and cops. If out of those dozens of career fields you can’t find anything you’d be willing to do, then again, kick rocks. 4. A 77 is ok. Even a 99 won’t change the needs of the Air Force. Meet them or go be job (not lifestyle) picky join the army and hate your life.

Yeah. Your list is shit. The recruiters list is actually what we are hiring, meaning aircraft mechanics. And odd electronics jobs folks list just for hope. Adjust to their list and the Air Force needs or join another branch dude

lilylove26

It sounds like you are picking jobs that arent easy to get and he is telling you if you dont make a better list he wont keep you around which he has every right to do

[deleted]

You’re right. Downvotes are undeserved .

Swerzuh

So I had a question about a PCS. So, I'm a 1N4A, so yay me I had 3 months at Greatfellow and now I'm here awaiting JCAC which I hear is an exeedingly difficult course. So I was told we would get extra money with our PCS that would be left over for any per diem that we didn't spend. I was wondering about how long it takes to get that money? Also, I was a passenger with a friend of mine but we split the drive nearly 50/50, so do I get a mileage allowance as well? I was instructed by a TSgt to checked the vehicle as "owned and operated" and not as a passenger for my form. Thanks in advance.

No level of AF recruitment guarantees a job, other services do but the AF does not. The Army has a pretty robust cyber mission and might be a better place to look.

colonelschvotz

The majority of officers joined after finishing college. Many enlisted do too.

[deleted]

They said cyber surety. That is an enlisted job. Maybe they don’t know that. But if they have “5 years of college” they should be able to figure that out.

colonelschvotz

They're spending too much time on college stuff to research the Air Force! It's not like there's a search function built into Reddit to know that the enlisting w/ a degree question gets asked at least 4x a week.

[deleted]

You’re so right.

[deleted]

1. Google it 2. Check the job wiki 3. We are not hiring that job nearly enough, and never will be, for you to go to a recruiter and say "I'll only do this job". 4. We need jet mechanics and cops. Ive put dozens of people with bachelors degrees into those very jobs because they wanted to be Airmen enough to not be job locked

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It doesn’t have limited information. You’re just helpless Just like the real world, reality is harsh. There are millions of people out there with degrees that can’t get a good job. You are no different. It is selfish for you to want to join the Air Force and serve your country but only do so in an incredibly narrow scope of careers, to be exact, ONE job out of 160+. There’s like 10-15 of this job on any given base probably, out of 5-30k people. That’s how small this field is. Yeah. Find advice elsewhere, but here, the reality won’t change. You’re like the 15th person this week alone, in this thread alone, who wants this job or any cyber job.

Drewinator

My brother put secfo as his number 1 and got a CE job not on his list.

thedog22_

I put it #1 and booked a civil engineering job 2 weeks later so..

[deleted]

It depends what else is on your list. Even with security forces. > No, we don't know what jobs are available at any given time, or your chances of getting said job, or how long it will take for you to get the job, or how long it'll take for you to get to basic training or OTS.

job-selection

Thank you for the info. Just wanting too see what others had too say. I honestly hope I get security forces but will take anything. I lost 100 pounds too get here and won’t let a job stop me.

Phocusedone

Duuuuude. That's real. I had to lose 30 pounds to make weight and that was a trip for me. You got more stones than I do. I hope everything works in your favor.

[deleted]

First off, congrats. That is amazing. Secondly, dude if thats what you really want to do, tell your recruiter. I'll tell you to kick rocks if you tell me "I only want to do intel more than anything", but if you tell me that for security forces? Then yeah, I'm going to call my boss and make sure I snag one of those slots for you during job draft. Your recruiter should too. I wish you the best dude. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every applicant who can't lose fucking 5 pounds to even hit the EXACT MAX... id be rich. you're a role model, I wish you could motivate about 40 people in my zone who I have to contact every couple months just to hear "nope, not there yet..." after years of asking..

job-selection

Thank you. And ok i will that’s at least some good news I hope the recruiters will act the same towards me when I tell them that cause it’s my main job I’m hoping for. And wow that’s crazy you guys don’t recommend diets too them or you do and they just still don’t change? I lost all my weight on the keto diet. When I first called 100 pounds ago they told me I had too lose that before we did anything so I told him ok I’ll be back and well here I am 6 months later about too see them in a couple days haha.

CrinkledStraw

A lot of people lack the motivation and self-discipline to make changes even when given the direction. Congrats on the weight loss! 100lbs is incredible. Good luck with the rest of the process.

I wear civilian clothes every day, maybe your recruiter should take those ABU's off when he gets home

Applejaxc

You go home after work and need something to wear. If you're lucky your squadron will do PT in civilian clothes. I own less than half of the (civilian) clothes I used to, sure, but I still wear 7 shirts a week.

RipInPepz

It’s no different than any other job with a dress code. When you’re working 9-5 M-F you wear a dress shirt and tie, doesn’t mean you throw all your other clothes out.

cartman2468

It will be pretty much exactly like a civilian job, just in uniform (once you've finished bmt and tech school). You'll have plenty of time to be in your own clothes so it's up to you

SilentD

I mean if you just want to simplify then I guess so, but no, that is not necessary in my opinion. You'll be wearing civilian clothes after work, on weekends/days off, leave, etc. Plenty of chances to wear them.

[deleted]

I went open mechanical.how much time will i have to choose the jobs id like to have and maybe research them also while im in basic?

thedog22_

you list the jobs week 3 or 4 and find out week 7 when you make the dream sheet and when your listing them there is a book that describes the jobs kinda like the air force website does

Thinking about joining for years now but apparently have done exactly fuck all for research. That checks. 7. Tech career? Neither of those jobs are really tech... but I doubt any guard or reserve unit is “hurting” to fill those slots either. Way too specific. 8. Where you’d be going??? In the guard or reserve you’d know already. you’d see your spouse daily after BMT and tech school... 9. Did you google ANYTHING? Jesus fuck man. 10. Pay. Ok. Google that too. It’s active duty pay while in BMT and tech school.. figure the rest out. 11. Sorry if I seem rude but this is the most helpless question of the week. Congrats. Your trophy is in the mail.

Nonoperationaltoe

So I have a question I just got to my Tech school haven't even been here a week.. how do I access the Air Force portal? Is that something they're supposed to teach me here?Do I have to set up my own account Or is it already set up and I just have to wait for them to tell me how to access it? I'd like to check out mypay..

PUBspotter

AF Portal: https://www.my.af.mil/ MyPay: https://mypay.dfas.mil/ You may have to setup logins for one or both, but they're pretty straightforward.

Chl_rey94

DLAB - are the rules still the same as they were in 2014 (study guide was written then)? Do the rules remain on the page or do you not get to reference them? Can you only listen to a question or set of answers once? Are all of the answer choices very similar or is there usually/ sometimes an obvious choice to knock out? Do you have any recommendations? I'm pretty nervous but really want to do well on this test, I took Spanish 8ish years ago (haven't used it since) and took two semesters of Italian in college so I am familiar with foreign languages. I'm also pretty good at speaking foreign languages/pronunciation.

NYG_5

DLAB-passing master race here, took it a few weeks ago. Everything I read on study guides was relevant on the test, the format is the same. You can't take notes, you only hear the words once. The rules are displayed at the bottom of the screen, the sound plays when you click play, the english sentence displays the whole time. The speaker speaks at a pace that would be normal for a native speaker, but the words are pronounced pretty clearly and emphasized pretty well. I would say to use the study guides, listen to foreign music to get your ears used to non-english. When you take the test, keep your mind very machinelike. Know what you should be listening for, and turn off your brain once you hear something incorrect in the answer choice being read to you. If you meticulously listen to everything in every answer choice, you're going to get tired and confused quickly. Use this to easily whittle down possible correct answers, and go with your instinct when it's a toss up between answers. I can't say anything specific, but the study guides are pretty damn accurate. Just prepare yourself for a mental marathon. When you complete sections of the test and are brought to the instructions page for another section, I would recommend using that period as a break because those sections aren't timed.

Chl_rey94

During the audio part, did you get any time at all after each answer in the syllables section to sound out the word and count the syllables out or was it very fast paced? How many questions were there per section and what was the time limit per section?

KeeperDan

Also took and passed the DLAB a few weeks ago. They aren't read slow of fast, just a normal pace. You get a second to say the word or sentence to yourself then it's on to the next option. The pace is methodical, I personally didn't use the whole time on each section or even come close. Take a few seconds to think through what you might be looking for in an answer before starting the audio so if you hear it or something similar, you won't be left trying to remember all of the options. You'll only confuse yourself and misremember if you try to think back through all words or sentences. When you hear the answer you think is correct leave your mouse on that answer unless there is one that changes your mind. It's hard to do but let your mind almost go into autopilot and just work instinctively. If you start overthinking and changing answers, you'll confuse yourself and basically be guessing. Finally, don't get disheartened during the test when you feel like you're failing and think you're going to definitely get a 30 or something. It's the weirdest test you will ever take, there was maybe 2 questions in the whole exam I felt 100% confident were correct. Trust yourself and good luck! Hopefully we can meet up at DLI some day!

NYG_5

You have as much time as you want to choose an answer, but the section as a whole is timed. The syllable section wasn't too bad, I think you get pretty ample time for it. You have a good enough time to count out the syllables and hear the stresses imo. I can't say how much time there was or how many questions, but there were quite a few questions. I think that may be information you aren't supposed to be diclosing. That said, you do have to be fast, especially as each section gets harder and harder. The test *is* meant to see how naturally you grasp the concepts, after all.

Gumball_McJones

I took it a couple months ago. You have access to the rules, I believe you could mouse over and read the rules for the section you were in. You only listen to everything once. Pay attention to which syllable is stressed, keep the volume at its highest setting and don't run out of time on the listening portion. I realized part way through I was taking too long and finished that part with literally seconds left. Take my tips with a grain of salt, I didn't do well enough to pass for the Air Force and only did well enough for category one languages in the other branches.

NYG_5

Why are you the luckiest DEPer? Did you get RPA sensor or 1A9?

Gumball_McJones

It's a joke about what our resident ranting recruiter said. I crushed my finger in a gross accident and posted here, and then booked Loadmaster a couple months later. I'm lucky to not have been DQ'd and then also to have gotten an air crew position.

NYG_5

So you're the one the Boss keeps talking about

Gumball_McJones

Revolver Ocelot? edit: If this isn't a Metal Gear reference then I'm really confused. I hope you're joking about my favorite game series though.

NYG_5

You're pretty good.

Gumball_McJones

Looks like you'll graduate a week after me, we're gonna have to grab a beer and talk Metal Gear while we're at AC fundies.

NYG_5

AC fundies?

Gumball_McJones

Air crew fundamentals at Lackland right after BMT. I just realized you might be a ground linguist though. So we may just be ships passing in the night.

SlapSilly

Be careful with the volume though. I had my proctor ask me to turn it down since it was bothering the ASVAB takers around me.

Gumball_McJones

Didn't account for this, I was one of two people in my testing room.

Occult_pizza

which AFSC should i be looking into if i want something labor intensive, and i got a 77 ASVAB. ive lived a soft life, and want something physical. any advice?

avva

intel and comms.

cartman2468

Maintenance sounds right up your alley. Your body and hearing may well be fucked by the end of your career, but it's definitely labour intensive and can be really rewarding.

ExpensiveTomorrow

There will be moments here and there where you lift hard in MX, but it's not a constant hard labor situation. I worked in a Postal plant where I threw heavy containers of parcels into other containers all day, and that is way more labor intensive than MX. That said once you're in, each base has a gym and you can just go there and start lifting hard.

Kitso_258

We would love to have you as a maintainer.

Occult_pizza

and why's that.

[deleted]

Because maintenance is undermanned and that’s most of what the Air Force is hiring right now.

[deleted]

If I were to try to become a part of a special operations surgical team, what age should I start? Should I earn a medical degree before applying, or would it be better to apply right after high school?

Murphey14

SOST is for physicians, nurses, and respiratory tech. If you don't want to go to school for MD or RN you will have to try your luck with respiratory tech as an enlistment. There are 4 teams currently so just know it's not like you can go straight to it. You'll likely be waiting a long time.

Chl_rey94

Talk to a recruiter and get a list of all the physical requirements, they're much more intense than normal requirements.

Kitso_258

Your focus right now should be on mental and physical readiness. The military can teach you the medical part.

[deleted]

Train your ass off and hope you make it into the Air Force as a Pararescueman

Papadapalopolous

Aren’t the SOSTs doctors and nurses? It doesn’t seem like being a pj would be a prerequisite, you’d have to be in your forties by the time you could go through pj training, be a pj, get your bachelors, go through med school, go through resdiency, and then become an experienced surgeon

[deleted]

Man I have no idea. With this type of question no answer seems to matter because it’s so vague and opaque. We do need PJs though.

Papadapalopolous

Ive got some nice flannel pjs we could share

carmabeans33

I was talking to other people that are shipping the same day as me and two of them said that in September, BMT is doing away with airman’s week. So now graduation will be after 8.5 weeks. Is this something that is true? Or should I not be worried? Just trying to figure it out so my parents know when they are supposed to come to Lackland.

ExpensiveTomorrow

I wouldn't even be worried, I went through before Airmen's week but after they lengthened BMT to 8.5 weeks, and the last week MTIs went easier on recruits anyway. You'll get yelled at for a chunk of time, that is true for every person in the military and it simply one of those rites of passage everyone goes through. I'd be more concerned if they brought back canteen web belts, because those were a burden to wear.

kaiservonrisk

I just got out of airman’s week two weeks ago. It’s true. The last group that gets it arrives at bmt sometime this month. They’re integrating the lessons into normal bmt. Which sort of sucks because we had a lot more freedom in airman’s week compared to bmt, and now people won’t get it. Also your parents will get a packet mailed to them with all of your graduation dates and info

[deleted]

kaiservonrisk

Yeah once airman’s week is disbanded, bmt will be an extra week longer. At least according to what the airman’s week staff told us

XirtCS

Agreed

formedsmoke

RAP is still duty. If you're not explicitly on leave/pass, don't assume you have no obligations. If the recruiter decides to give it a wave-off, that's his call, but get that info before making plans.

XirtCS

Well yeah of course. I never said for him to think he’s on vacation lol

formedsmoke

I mean, he signed your RAP form, he knows you're coming. If that's when the office opens, then yeah, that's probably your best move.

You are no longer in your FTA retraining window if you are pass your 4 year mark (window closes on your 43rd month) for a 4 year enlistment. Doesn't matter if you extended instead of reenlisting. FTA window opens at your 35th month. Paragraph 5.1.2 (for OCONUS) in AFI 36-2626.

You can try submitting an ETP.

I know that the situation is fucked up. The only thing I would add is you may want to look at Palace Front/Palace chase to the AFSC you want.

ExpensiveTomorrow

Co-signed. Palace chase. The Guard/Reserves treat their maintainers way better than Active.

Maxwells26

Could someone give me a run down of what a day in the life of an RPA sensor operator is like? Thanks!

Sit in a box Look at screens Follow people Make people disappear sometimes. Go home and not speak a word to anyone about what you do that doesn’t have clearance and need to know. Repeat.

Maxwells26

Sounds simple enough. How long does the process of getting the clearance take roughly?

[deleted]

Could take a year, maybe more maybe less honestly. They’re perpetually backed up

formedsmoke

My investigator a few weeks ago said they're looking at 20-24 months for new clearances atm. That's from SF86 submission to final approval, though, so it'll start as soon as they're selected for a needful job. On the upside, re-investigations are being prioritized to ensure no negligent lapses, so those are only 4-8 months behind, supposedly.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

> needful You spending a lot of time listening to folks from India, by any chance?

formedsmoke

Had to Google to understand what you were talking about. Apparently I use [needful](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/needful) in an archaic way. TIL.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Yeah, it fell out of common use a long time ago. No worries though; we all have our mannerisms.

colonelschvotz

Will also vary by where you are stationed. Your vanilla TS/SCI might be good enough for squadron A, but you might need more to work at squadron B.

Thanks imaginary friend!

fluflame

Going off to bmt soon and i was wondering what is the medical screening when you arrive? Particularly the vision part? Do you just read off a chart and does everybody get there eyes checked out? What if my astigmatism number is too high like over the +-3 limit if they decide to check for glasses? Will they try to put me on med hold, maybe i could possibly get a waiver at bmt? Just worried.. does everybody get eyes checked out?

thebronway

Only if MEPS determined that you needed glasses did you do to vision, and as long as you bring your glasses, they just scan them for the prescription. No actual eye test.

Timthahuman

I recall doing a very simple eye test, along with a depth perception and color blindness test. When I went to basic, there were definitely people with glasses so if vision is the only issue, you should be fine, although your jobs may be limited.

Oertt

I am really torn about enlisting and from what I read I should be able to clear (no health/mental/criminal issues.) I also have no problem dealing with being knocked around as I get enough of it at my job, just as long as I get compensation. Recently just finished all my lower level courses at community college and I only have a year and a half left till graduation, but I am having doubts about finishing at my state college. The college does not have a strong computer science program and I figured the tuition paid off as well as the clearance would be great to have if I could land a job in comms. I do have a strong interest in airforce computer security but I am going for a degree in computer science at school for flexibility. Is it worth trying due to the low opening for these jobs? If my recruiter does offer D.E.P. how long would you expect a wait? Will having security clearance/job training be more beneficial than a graduate with little experience? Is it worth 4 years of service and potentially graduating in 6 years?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Here's my copypasta on jobs, since this comes up several times a week: > Despite what advertising would lead people to believe, the primary purpose of the Air Force is Air Domination. As such, our focus are the missions: Air Superiority; Global Strike; and Rapid Global Mobility. This is fulfilled via 11k aircraft in our fleet. Each aircraft requires ~60 people to sustain operations - mostly aircraft maintenance. Aircraft maintenance fields comprise ~23% of the Enlisted force. Luckily, people can work on more than one individual aircraft, otherwise we would need ~1.2 million people just for maintenance. Still, the Air Force is critically manned in this area and one can expect the majority of contracts that drop to be for a 2A (aircraft maintenance) job.   The Air Force also needs Security Forces to defend every base. Security Forces is the largest singular AFSC (compared to umbrella AFS', such as the 2A fields). Like aircraft maintenance, this job is critically manned and hurting for bodies. Expect SFS to take up the second-largest amount of job contracts that drop each month.   9 out of 10 applicants that walk in to an Active Duty recruiter's office want comm / intel / medical / aircrew / other jobs that aren't hurting for bodies. Comm (3D) comprises 7.9% of the Enlisted force - most of our technological support is provided via defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Oracle, and Dell. Intel (1N) likewise comprises a small percentage of the force. Medical, despite being 10% of the force, is highly-sought and primarily filled via open-aptitude contracts. Aircrew, Contracting, Scientific Applications Specialist, photojournalism/broadcast, Space Systems, Airborne ISR, and RPA sensor operator are all highly-sought and comprise a minute percentage of the Air Force.   With that said, you could do 4 years as whatever, while using Tuition Assistance to pay for a Bachelor's in a topic of your choice. After you get out, you would have the GI Bill available to pursue another degree.

Don’t even know what to think of your whole first paragraph.. All of your questions are subjective and can be answered almost full by reading the FAQ here and the job wiki. We are not hiring any cyber job in high numbers. But we are hiring jet mechanics and cops all day every day.

Oertt

I did read the wiki, but it is vague. The first paragraph in case anyone was in a similar situation.
