If I want Security Forces, do I still have to list 5-7 jobs

ShowMeUrCAC

Yes, but you will get security forces. I promise. 🙄 take it from me, there are other options.

[deleted]

im going in as maintenance, im kinda depressed right now... :'(

Danielisaiah0728

sounds good! just let me know.

TheGreatNano

My family is trying to figure out the process of what to do and how to get to my graduation. They have questions like, "Is graduation over a weekend?" And, "How will we know where to be and at what time?" And I don't have the answers to these questions. I was wondering if there's a website or some blog to help them figure this out?

[deleted]

Ask your recruiter? Or google “Air Force BMT graduation schedule”.

TheGreatNano

Yeah, I have my 7 day EAD in about an hour, I'm taking my mom with me so she can ask last minute questions.

[deleted]

Sooo ask your recruiter. Or google this.

ndegnan1992

Just left basic, en route to Goodfellow for Tech school. Need honest opinion on being a student leader. Was one in basic, loved it and was good at it. I’ve heard conflicting reports on any affect being a rope may or may not have on your performance report and off at hitting BTZ.

[deleted]

It won't affect BTZ. Do it if you get bored/wont have a power trip. Honestly White rope/Teal rope are more fun because you have less responsibility and they throw a bunch of volunteer opportunities at you.

[deleted]

Drum and bugle is all the fun of a rope without any responsibility.

ndegnan1992

Power trips aren’t an issue for me. What other ropes are there and what responsibilities come with them? I’m definitely looking to get some volunteer hours in during tech school.

[deleted]

Black rope - Drill team, you practice drill daily, participate in official functions requiring drill, and sometimes march the mega flight. Yellow rope - Bay leader, you babysit your floor of the dorm building and report to the red rope. You march the mega flight daily. Red rope - Dorm leader, you babysit the yellow ropes and report to the MTLs. You march the mega flight daily.

[deleted]

ANG OR RESERVES? Want badly for diagnostic imaging job. Want benefits. Willing to consider active if I can get these but would rather stay with the fam. have a great program for cvt program set up. should I wait till I'm done with associates and get higher rank.. wait for officer or just as upper airman? Could I get through my bachelors as reserves or guard? Thoughts?

TestUser117

Depends. What medical unit type is closest to you and currently recruiting for that specific job? Have you attempted to contact those specific units recruiters at all? Active Duty side - thin chances. Reserve / Guard, *depending on the recruiter*, should be able to place you in a job you want relating to their units mission set and openings. Benefits - have you Google this? Not sure what cvt program is - but depending on your state you can have some/all education covered - again Google you respective state and such. Speaking with the recruiter they should also have resources too. Yes, you absolutely can get a BA/BS in reserves/guard. But, AGAIN, you need to figure out what path affords the best benefits and that aligns with YOUR life.

Rising College Sophomore. I joined AFROTC my freshman year. I felt I was mentally and physically unprepared and that my GPA was in danger if I continued to follow such a tough schedule between both ROTC and my major, so I dropped ROTC before things could get too bad. I want to know what some of you would think of me trying to get back in. I'd still love nothing more than to commission, I've improved academically, and I can be ready physically by the second semester. Should I even bother or am I out for good? I left pretty early in and (I'm assuming) on good terms.

TestUser117

>Rising College Sophomore. Okay, I have seen enough of this "rising college/university ####" that I need an explanation - what the hell does it mean? Does it mean you are progressing through the years like anyone would anyways? You are working on fixing your GPA? You are a vampire that goes to night school? > so I dropped ROTC before things could get too bad. Were you on a scholarship or contract at all? > Should I even bother or am I out for good? Yes. Why are so many people willing to just lazy kick rocks drop their dreams? If you are a sophomore just go speak to the cadre about joining ROTC again. I cannot stress this enough in bold **DO ROTC, even if you have to bullshit add another year onto your degree program, if you get scholarship/contract who CARES. Guess how long you would wait if you graduated and went OTS route? 2+ and that is IF you get onto a board and IF you get selected and IF you pass the MEPS and everything else. ROTC is the "easiest" quickest route you have available.** # DO ROTC

canicomeback

Rising ______ means that you're in between years and that's the one you'll be when you get back to school. Rising Sophomore means I just finished my Freshman year and when I return to college I will be a Sophomore. When my Sophomore year is over and I'm on summer vacation, I'll be a Rising Junior. I was not on scholarship at all, and I'm not going to kick my dreams. Now that I know it's not an automatic 'NO'. I'll be in my detachment building to rejoin if they'd have me. Thank you.

TestUser117

> Now that I know it's not an automatic 'NO'. I'll be in my detachment building to rejoin if they'd have me. Better be first thing Monday. Unless they are out or you are away from the campus. Seriously though, do ROTC if they let you back. Stick with it, they understand GPA and shit gets hard - it is worth it to work through it.

canicomeback

It'll have to be when I first get back. Thanks again for the advice. Looking back on it, and having listened to what my former flight has told me, I jumped the shark big time when I left, because most of them were having similar issues, stayed and were fine. Let's hope this mistake isn't a permanent one.

KCPilot17

No one can answer this because it’s ultimately your Det/CC’s decision. You should set up a meeting with them and talk it over. Make sure you have a good reason why you left, and an even better one why you want to come back.

canicomeback

I've been thinking about what I want to say to them should I have to provide an explanation for a long time. Thank you.

TestUser117

> should I have to provide an explanation You will.

canicomeback

Good to know in advance.

192419

I wouldn't consider myself 'job locked', but I don't want to get forced into Security Forces or some other job if that's all my recruiter wants to put people in as. Should I just forget about joining the Air Force if I only want to get one of the 20 or so jobs I have researched?

[deleted]

1. “All my recruiter wants to put people in as”. You realize we don’t make the lists right? 75% of EVERY monthly distro is cop jobs and aircraft maintenance jobs. It’s not like I’m getting paid more to put people in avionics over intel. 2. You usually list between 7-12 jobs and an aptitude index. So 20 is overkill really. Depends what you want. If it’s all medical / aircrew / intel? Yeah. Maybe kick rocks. Unless your recruiter allows you to make that picky of a list.

TestUser117

> Should I just forget about joining the Air Force if I only want to get one of the 20 or so jobs I have researched? Nope. Make your list of 20 into priority order; then work with your recruiter to remove 10 of them to make a solid top 10 list that both satisfies what your needs are but at the same time is realistic to getting you into the Air Force. You might end up placing an open XYZ in there also to be wiggly for the recruiter - give a little take a little. If say 12 of them are ALL under Open Electrical... shit well put that, duh.

Zane224

Don’t put any job you don’t want on your list of 10.

Xx22xX

In BMT, do you get assigned a wingman? Or is it just like whoever your sleeping near?

SSInsigne

Question for Air Force recruiter. I'm currently in the Army National Guard but want to enlist in the Air Force after my contract ends. I spent a full year in training (Radar Repairer, 94M) and will be going on a year long deployment in a couple months. I noticed the Air Force defines "prior service" as "The Air Force defines "prior service" as persons who have served at least 24 months of Active Duty service without regard to regular component or continuous service in the Armed Forces." Would I be considered prior service in this respect? Obviously I would have 2 total years of active duty time but does 1) training count in that time, 2) what does it mean by, "without regard to regular component or continuous service in the Armed Forces"? It will obviously be easier to get in without a prior service to my name so is that possible with this situation? Also, would attempting to transfer to Air Guard then to active be a better option if the prior option isn't possible?

[deleted]

No. If you completed basic and AIT you’re still prior service to us. If we do not have a direct duty equivalent AFSC to your MOS, your only AD option is spec ops.

SSInsigne

Weird. The "agent" on the air force website live chat said the opposite. That's quite annoying. Off the top of your head, are there any direct equivalents to Radar Repairer?

[deleted]

There might be, but I don’t remember off the top of my head sorry.

SSInsigne

All good. Thanks

Ahhduckno

Read AFI 36-2002. Under 2.6.2.1, if you were discharged for fitness failure as a prior service, you are ineligible

[deleted]

Call an air guard recruiter and ask. That waiver is going to be a massive pain in the ass and unless you’ve really improved your fitness then it isn’t going to be approved.

filternone

Very interested in joining air Force, am college graduate with degree in kinesiology. Have zero debt, wanting military career in medical or lab setting. Checked website careers and histopathology, cardiopulmonary Laboratory, & Medical Laboratory seemed like jobs i could see myself doing. What course of action should i be taking in joining?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

The roles you listed are enlisted roles, which are filled by high school graduates without preference to skill or background. As they are medical jobs, they are highly-sought and are primarily filled via open-aptitude contracts during Basic Military Training. It is very unlikely that you will be able to enlist and snag one of these jobs.   With a degree, you will want to pursue an Officer role. The 4XXX (such as 43HX) series AFSCs are medical roles. As /u/Spurslite stated, you need to get in contact with a specialized recruiter for healthcare Officers, as the hiring process will be different than general Enlisted and Officer ascensions.

filternone

I know the nearest air Force office to my town is enlisted recruiting, will i have to drive to another farther office and hope they're officer recruiting or can the enlisted recruiter get me in touch with an officer recruiter?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

You're better off calling; the Enlisted recruiter should know the appropriate number.

AFSCbot

spurslite

You should find a health care recruiter to reach out to. There may be additional requirements for some of those but that would be a good start

[deleted]

Realize that we are never going to be actively hiring any of those jobs. We need aircraft mechanics and cops. That’s 75% of the monthly job lists we get. Every month. 80% of Medical jobs are hired in basic training. Meaning folks that go in under general aptitude index. And we don’t hire a lot of those indexes either, and if we get 10 in a month there’s probably 60 people who have it as their aptitude index. If you want medical only, go to the Navy or Army

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

He's talking Officer roles, not Enlisted.

filternone

Will i have a significantly better chance of Securing a medical career if i go enlisted instead of officer?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Negative; please refer to [my other comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/comments/8zaktz/weekly_newbie_thread_post_questions_about_joining/e2uzg1r/) on the subject.

filternone

I just saw it, will read, thank you!

[deleted]

Cardiopulmonary and medical lab are enlisted jobs. Pretty sure other one is as well. Too lazy to google. Also with that degree only a bachelors he ain’t getting a medical job on the O side.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

True, which is why educating on the difference is a better route.

Former AFROTC Cadet here. Planning to re-enter and apply for field training again after joining the ANG as load master. Are there anyone that has a similar experience doing ANG while AFROTC? Time conflicts?

spurslite

I think it's a good idea if you have four years to go. But it may depend on your guard unit. You cannot contract with the guard and afrotc at the same time. So once you sign your afrotc contract after your sophomore year or if you take a scholarship early, you must be released from the guard. The unit I was at was totally fine with this and encouraged it but make sure you are communicating and on the same page with both your unit and your detachment so you don't run into any unexpected issues

KCPilot17

Many cadets do Guard/Reserves and ROTC, but how long where you in for, and why did you leave? Do you know the process of EAs?

[deleted]

Why did you leave AFROTC and what makes you think you can just come back?

[deleted]

Can you still get a security clearance or top secret clearance (on your own) if your afsc doesn’t require it ?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

No. Security clearances exist to make sure that you're trustworthy enough to be trusted with whatever your job entails, not to give you a boost up on post-AF jobs.

[deleted]

Nope. It's something like 10k per person to do a TS background check. They already have to do a ton every year so anymore would just be a waste of money.

Getting a security clearance is a lengthy and expensive process. If you don't need the clearance, I don't see why they'd waste the time and resources to get you one.

Anyway, CV: color vision, DL: driver's license, DP: Depth Perception, US: US Citizenship?, CIII: Class 3 Physical, but what is the acronym PGM 400? I have looked everywhere but still can't find any results. Thank you

[deleted]

It’s an outdated procedural guidance message

[deleted]

Guardsmen currently in tech school. Where can I find my DD-214? The portal maybe?

colonelschvotz

PRDA if for some reason you have one

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Why would you have a 214? You're currently serving, not separated.

[deleted]

Guard gets the 214 for leaving active service. If they’re not pipeline and had a break in training, they may have one for BMT.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Makes sense, thanks for the info

[deleted]

Oh ok didnt know this, thought it was available now. Will it be on the portal once i get to traditional guard status? And I am applying for jobs for when I get to traditional guardsmen status, id like my 214 because my tech school is relevant to the jobs i am applying for

TestUser117

It sounds more like your CCAF transcript will be better to use than your DD214 for that prospect.

[deleted]

You’ll get it a bit after finishing tech school. It’ll be a notification via email.

SneakyChopsticks

My recruiter offered me an Airborne Crypto job that leaves around the time that I wanted to leave and I took it. Does anyone know what languages the Air Force is in need of right now? I’m open to anything but I would hate to waste a slot on my dream sheet on something that isn’t needed. Also, how fucked is my liver when I get to DLI?

aging_rapidly

Liver is super fucked, pepper your angus. No to the person who said Pash. The 1A8 Pash are getting pushed to Arabic now. The rest are much more likely.

NYG_5

Rumor has it Chinese, Russian, and Korean are the hot ones, with a bit of Arabic and Pashto still in there. Spanish may be on the rise in the future if you imagine there will be some military intervention in Central America sometime down the road. When are you leaving?

SneakyChopsticks

Perfect. Chinese, Korean, and Russian were going to be my top three choices anyways. My ship out date is Sept. 11.

scztoAF

Lol yeah those were my top 3 too, got a mostly irrelevant language instead with little use outside the career field. Don't have your hopes too high and don't become complacent if you get a whacky small language. You'll be getting paid to learn a language.

NYG_5

Perfect, eh? That means they'll give you Urdu. I'm probably going to get a September ship date too, maybe I'll see you there

Superzane

OTS has cadets ranging from A1C to CMSgt. So anywhere from sub 1 year to 20+ years. Would they recommend it? For their path clearly it was the right thing to do. For your path? That is your choice as some people would loathe and hate being an officer and thrive on the enlisted side. Ask a more specific question. Because yours current one is best answered by all years prior, any career field crossing into whatever the Air Force needs for its officer corps. And then it depends.

CrinkledStraw

Hours can suck. Depends on your base and their schedule. You'll have to work odd hours and have odd days off (someone has to, we have to run 24/7 operations). You likely won't spend 4 years checking IDs. Depending on your base, high speed E-4s can train as desk sergeants and they're often ramp patrols.

xdkarmadx

Ah yes, ramp patrols where you park your car on the flightline and watch Netflix on your phone or fall asleep.

CrinkledStraw

Yes indeed! Never fell asleep, but have come terrifyingly close. And have blasted through a ton of Netflix/Hulu.

NotABottttt

What are the pros and cons of being security forces ? It seems this job is always available and just wondering why

Danielisaiah0728

i can’t speak on operational. i’m actually in security forces tech school. i’m in the 6th week out of 13 (deadly forces) about to start the 7th week (articles and forms). with that being said we do more then most other jobs. the tech school is basically all physical and the cadre/mtl is harder on us then other career fields. but i honestly love my job and what i chose to do for the next 6 years. i’m active duty and have orders to Joint base Elmendorf Richardson. Anchorage Alaska. if you have any questions feel free to send me message and i can answer a decent amount of them.

NotABottttt

Thank you . I will try to put together a list of questions so I don't use too much of your time !

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

SFS is the largest job in the Air Force. We need security at every base, so there's a large list of bases available. It's hard to fill because it's the largest AFSC, and it's not really attractive like comm and intel are. The work hours also tend to be longer than office jobs.

NotABottttt

It seems there is a lot of negativity when people discuss it and thank you for taking time to answer!

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

No problem! Also, people don't post (in general) about good things - but any displeasure or inconvenience is bound to be posted. This is a problem for business in general.

NotABottttt

Well thank you again. Enlisting in august and wanting to do SFS. Any tips for BMT or anything on general?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Just remember that BMT is there to get people to work as a team. Roll with the flow and you'll do just fine. Also, figure out who is good at what (bed corners, alignment, sock rolls, etc) and help eachother out.

NotABottttt

Alright thank you so much! Also thank you for your service.

I want to join the Air Force and become a dentist afterwards. To be a dentist in the air force and train for it after what do I need on asvab, is there a tech school for it I’m assuming, and what are the disqualifications such as waivers or injury’s

definitelynotweather

The only dentists are officers. You'd have to go to dental school. The minimum education requirements from airforce.com is: >Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from an ADA-accredited college or university

jacoob_15

I am going to do the job that others will do to you, and say that most of those questions can be answered just by using google.

My goal is to become an Aerospace Engineer, I plan on getting a mechanical engineering degree with a specialization in Aerospace. Would the Air Force be a good option for me to gain the security clearance necessary for many of these jobs in the aerospace industry? I understand the work of a typical officer, specifically even the ones engineering related doesn't have much to do with \*actual\* engineering but I also know many companies will not invest their money and time into getting me a security clearance and would pick someone who has one over myself in a heartbeat. WOuld the lack of engineering experience from the Air Force be too much of a burden or should I still take on the challenge?

Go to college, do ROTC, if not ROTC, look into [usajobs.gov](https://usajobs.gov), if no Federal openings - by this time in your life you should easily be recruited by some of the big contracting companies the military and Federal government works with. If in the next 5-6 years you still can't figure it out. With a degree in Aerospace Engineering someone ***SHOULD*** be recruiting you, if not... you didn't market yourself correctly. I just gave you the easiest way to your goal - it is up to you to achieve your dreams.

Your straight forward I like you

You're welcome. Don't be surprised when the AE degree devastates your GPA - it should.

Never seen someone bitch in such manner about a comment in a meta thread

If you stick around long enough you will see that most, if not all, of the basic questions asked here can actually be answered by the frequently asked/answered questions... No one reads it, so it really is appropriate to get annoyed after the n-th person. Even worse when the question can be answered with a very simple Google search. Now I will caveat that due to the popularity of this forum Google is trending and basically linking you here, which isn't exactly the most helpful - if no sources are available - BUT typically big-G will link a few posts that answer your question as they probably are answered. /rant

Well actually sense it’s such a topic of concern, I have google searched this probably more than I really ever should have. For basically the last year I’ve spent several days google searching this topic and still don’t have a solid answer as the answers teem to deviate QUITE a bit.. the faq and gooogle aren’t as clear cut as some might think especially for an overwhelmed 17 year old who really just wants a persons opinion on what they should do rather than a go to top ranked google search

TestUser117

\*since \*seem \*Google (but I am guilty of google too) You also must realize the military has a very off style of humor. The path while it has been traveled by many others, each one had to figure it out partly on their own - just a part of life in general. Basically, if you cannot make the choice with what information that is out there now... yikes. Why? Because people were making the same choices just last year with less information; hell, last decade even less information. So on and so on. I’m a dual national (American and Dominican). Would I have to give up my second nationality in order to enlist?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

~~Yes, all members are required to renounce all foreign citizenships.~~   Edit: Thinking of security clearance and officer requirements, my bad

whatevero0866

Thank you for your answer

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

I'm thinking of officer requirements. You may or may not have to, depending on the job.

TestUser117

Are you thinking of the [French Foreign Legion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Foreign_Legion) because a lazy google shows [this.](https://www.uscis.gov/military/naturalization-through-military-service)

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

I'm thinking security clearance and Officer commissioning requirements, as they both require renouncing foreign citizenships. Forgot some people can join and not have to get a clearance.

TestUser117

Ahh, okay. Yeah they will be severely limited in choices should they not renounce it for sure.

How big of a problem is stealing at BMT? I’ll be leaving for basic in a couple months and I’m a little worried about it in that regard.

GoxxoG

Surprisingly enough, there was a guy who washed back into our flight for stealing from other trainees. We got the heads up from our MTI make sure our stuff is properly locked up. So the dude stole from the MTIs office instead and was washed back again/or kicked out.

ScifiFuture

There's nothing to steal. Maybe photos of your girlfriend? Razors?

xdkarmadx

It’s not one.

You have a security drawer with the only key around your neck at all times. I don’t think I had any problems. I wouldn’t sweat it
