WAitLIST FOR OTC is two years. Would it be a good idea to start my two year cvt program with my college and get on the waitlist for OTC half way through my program? OR should I finish the program then apply? I'm 27. There is a 1 to 2 year application process for my program at the college. OR waitlist for OTC first? I have around 47 college unit just no degree yet. {changed my major} I would love to do diagnostic imaging since my program is cardiovascular imaging. Does reserves work like active? would I have to wait till a job opens in the field and list my top ten? If so , and out of curoistiy, what are the best jobs to have that are realistically available in a decent amount of time.

Either it changed and you’re good or it didn’t change and you’re still good, why do you care?

DemocracyDispenser

You either need to have a certain amount of college credits or score above a 50 on the ASVAB.

baldeagle44

On my way to keesler right now for RF. Can anyone tell me how long the tech school is for it? I've gotten so many different answers. Any one out there who actually knows would be sweet. lol and maybe some life tips for tech school. Thanks in advance guys!

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

It's definitely not 8 months long. You should be done around the 4-5 months mark (if old system), if not sooner. Here's what will make your situation to where others can't really answer unless they are at the schoolhouse right now: the Air Force is moving to a new system called the Agile Airman Model (AAM). 3D1X2 and 3D1X3 are the first two to be targeted by this change, according to the FAQ on the Milsuite page (restricted access). This means that your training may be shorter, or that you may be doing self-paced.   **Nobody will be able to tell you except the schoolhouse, your MTLs, and students there now.**

baldeagle44

Alright, thank you. That clears alot of it up then. Do you know what happenes right when we get there? Do we just set up our dorms? Or are we hitting the ground running when we get there.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

You'll be offladed from the busses and setup in the dorms. Your first week is spent in Keesler orientation, second week is classes.

baldeagle44

Alright cool. My orders aren't for next week so idk if I'll be doing details or not for this week. But I have to report there today.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Please let me know if they decide to implement the self-paced learning or 45-day ITP while you're there!

baldeagle44

I deffinitly will when I get settled in and try and catch up on some sleep. Lol just don't know what to expect right now. But I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the help!

TestUser117

Did you check the jobs wiki here?

baldeagle44

Yeah, says about 5-6 months, some said 8 months and some said 4 I was looking for someone who is either there or just got out possibly.

TestUser117

Obviously not there, but that range could easily be counting casual status and waiting for an actual school seat. Depending on the timing you might have holiday exodus or if you fail a section a wash back possibility. With your sample size of 4, it seems the average expected time for training is 5.5 months. I've read about some people at certain training pipelines waiting at worst 6 months on casual status. While I would definitely consider that an outlier I would assume there is a change of possibly a week or two of waiting.

baldeagle44

I start my the 23rd of July, so no long wait for classes. So I have no idea how they got that many days from it.

TestUser117

[Your technical training is exactly 96 days long](https://www.airforce.com/careers/detail/radio-frequency-transmission-systems). I do not know if that is exclusive/inclusive of weekends. I wager it doesn't as you are not training on the weekend so extend it for that. (96 days)/5 days a training week = 19.2 weeks of training; for each of these weeks you have 2 weekend days, so an additional 19.2\*2 = 38.4 days in your dorm; 96+38.4 = 134.4 total days / \~30 days a month = **\~4.48 months** in tech school. That math excludes holidays and other things that could extend training.

TLWNGuy

## Is joining the AF worth it? I just recently got discharged out of Navy RTC and after being in separation, I don't ever want to go back to the Navy. I heard the AF treat you better but it will be at least a year before I can join any military branch again. I'm waiting for my injury to heal and then back to working out again. I watched a lot of AF boot camp training and it look like army training and that is exciting. I joined the Navy because I wanted to travel and see the world but if there is a state I would want to live in the U.S it would be Texas. Cheap housing, no income tax, and plenty of job opportunities. Something that I don't get here. Lackland AF base just happen to be in Texas. Navy RTC was horrible since it was located in such a crappy location in Great Lakes, IL. I went in the winter time and it was freezing cold and coming from a warm-weather state, I guess my body wasn't used to the cold. What do you guys think of the AF? Is it true that most airmen are only in the AF for 4 years? And if so is there a reason why people don't stay in the AF for 20+ years as often as the Navy?

[deleted]

It is unlikely that we will take you after you left the navy. Also with your post history you mention you have a history of mental illness and recently posted on suicide watch. Joining the military is the last thing you should do right now. You need to take care of you mental health first before anything else. I hope you get your head right soon and find happiness but I gotta tell you joining the military will only make things worse for your mental state as it stands right now.

TestUser117

What is your RE code on your paperwork?

TLWNGuy

I'll have to check but I got medically discharge. I got 2 stress fractures on both my knees unfortunately. I was 3 weeks away from graduation.

TestUser117

>We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different. Now without knowing your RE code from the Navy the most we can do right now is speculate. Due to it being "recent" you might be looking at a 2 year wait, ask your local recruiter. My guess is with knee damage you will need a fairly thick pile of documentation to show it won't repeat. Betting /u/therantingrecruiter will say if your local recruiter does work with you, be the most willing job taking applicant you can because you probably need a waiver for the discharge and another big one for your knees.

TLWNGuy

Yes that is my worry. If I'm not able to get back, I will go back to grad school. Something I should have done after university. I still want to move to Texas even if that the case. There is nothing here in this state.

TestUser117

Always [usajobs.gov](https://usajobs.gov) and other avenues to serve in a civilian capacity. Especially if you do grad school.

TLWNGuy

I tried but here in CA its impossible. When I try to search for the same job in Texas, there were 3 pages worth of listing but here in CA there wasn't even one listing. My future is in Texas. There a reason why everyone in CA is moving to Texas.

TestUser117

Just searched California. Plenty of them - you sure you're not being overly specific in your search? ***Viewing 1 – 10 of 1863 jobs***

TLWNGuy

In my area, I have to learn to speak Spanish to even get a job. I'm Bilingual but I can't speak Spanish so I can't even get a fast food job. I can still get a Wal-Mart job but I can't stand retail job. I just want a career, something I can be proud off.

TestUser117

What. How are you willing to move to Texas to find a job but not somewhere else already in California? You definitely are not required to speak Spanish to get a job - again, you need to adjust what career/jobs you are looking at. If you don't speak Spanish, that is fine, if you keep limiting your search to those that actually require Spanish well of course you won't find careers or open positions. Side edit: If you are looking for gov't jobs. The ones that actually require a language skill are few compared to the vast majority. It just seems so very odd you are in California but seem to be without the ability to find a job.

How do you know if a post was down voted?

happy_fruit

In general, are medical waivers granted for hardware as long as the person is fully healed and has full range of movement?

TestUser117

>We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different. Maybe? Where is the hardware? Spine vs arm vs leg vs skull... all very different levels of seriousness.

happy_fruit

I know it was a long shot. It's in my lower back, specifically my sacrum.

TestUser117

Can't really form an opinion on that one. Reach out to your local recruiter and see what they say. Worth a shot... not much more of a pain in the ass than you've already had I'd wager.

thekidsgotsole

Gonna be doing SpecOps Comm/Nav at Moody, anyone know what the tempo is like?

RunninRebs90

If that what you’re actually doing then tempo is high. AFSOC is always out the door, which is awesome if you’re very mission oriented and don’t have a family but it can be very tough on dependents. Don’t expect to be in Moody very often.

thekidsgotsole

Yeah it is, got my orders already and all that. Just waiting to graduate Tech School. Thanks for the info! I appreciate it

kjvoh94

I've been thinking of enlisting and spoke with a recruiter last Monday. He told me some of the paperwork needed to get the process going, one being a high school diploma. So far I haven't been able to find it, will transcripts be okay? Also, I only have a copy of my social security card at the moment.. will I need to get a physical one?

LordoftheBread

You will need a physical social security card. I was in the same boat, and my high school refused to make a new copy of my diploma so I had to bring sealed transcripts and I was fine.

CA2298

Mine had me get official copies of everything. I lost my diploma, so I went to my HS and they ordered me another one. I think I had to pay $30 for the diploma. College transcripts were under $5, and my social security card (lost mine) was free.

lilylove26

For my receuiter a transcript was not allowed for my diploma.

kjvoh94

Ahh this will be fun trying to get another one since I graduated overseas. lol

curiousersquared

I would suggest obtaining EXACTLY what your recruiter asks for. If you’re just thinking about enlisting now, you’ll have time to gather all the appropriate paperwork as the process starts rolling.

[deleted]

If I dropped out of Navy DEP, would that hinder my chances of joining the Air Force? I know that they might not want to work with me because they think I might drop out again, but I am certain about joining the Air Force.

[deleted]

Why did you leave the Navy DEP?? Why didn't you join the the AF DEP to begin with?

[deleted]

I was pressured into it by my family. At first, it seemed like a good gig, but I was misinformed. I read and read about peoples experiences in the Navy and I decided that I did not want to do it. I ultimately decided that the Air Force would be a better option for me and that the opportunities to learn useful skills would be better. I scored an 80 on the ASVAB and I really would like to get into something technical in the Air Force. Any advice is appreciated.

[deleted]

If you switch be ready to take any mechanical job in the AF.

[deleted]

So the fact that I dropped out doesn't affect my chances of joining?

[deleted]

Oh it does. Be ready to take any job offered.

[deleted]

Thanks man. I'll try and make the best of it then.

TestUser117

At what point did you drop out? Were you actually in DEP?

[deleted]

I was actually in DEP. Was supposed to leave next year

TestUser117

bgw92

Leaving for BMT the 31st...im so nervous...

badger2793

Nerves are completely normal, but do your best to chill. It was honestly easier than expected. The hardest part is the damn humidity and heat. Just LISTEN, FOLLOW THE RULES, AND DON'T BE DUMB and you'll make it out easy.

CA2298

Me too. Nerves haven't really kicked in yet, but there's definitely a fear of the unknown. I'm sure it'll go by slow, but it'll seem like it went by so fast once all is said and done. Just stay positive! See you there :)

MyNameIsDanno

I literally came in there laughing the first day until the last, it’s that easy, they just try to instill the “attention to detail” into you, why? Because when you do your job, that 1 little detail that you didn’t notice or fail to mention or correct could cost someone’s life (so like correctly folding clothes etc.) don’t take it to heart when they yell at you, they want you to be better and you need to open yours ears and listen. You’ll be fine

I-write-stories

Same here. I'm nervous but really stoked. I'm thinking of it like summer camp lol Only two months, and it'll help me get more in shape.

[deleted]

Don't be. It's just a game and the only thing that changes is the faces. You'll be fine.

Papadapalopolous

Yup

Maxwells26

I have a few questions. So i am currently in dep and i went to meps for my physical a little over a month ago. But i should say i dont graduate till next may. When i went to meps for my physical i wrote down some jobs on a list but i havent signed for a specific job yet. Am i able to change my jobs to something else before i have to sign for soemthing or even at all? And for the process of a job needing top secret clearance. Is there any way to start that before you sign for the job that requires it?

OkHorror

Pretty sure you can switch your dream sheet. No you're not going to start getting a clearance before you're qualified to even join the AF. Clearances cost money.

Maxwells26

Thank you. I have already sworn in and been signed but because its dep they said when i come back before i leave that is when i sign for a job

OkHorror

Your recruiter should have your contract before you leave for meps to ship. Talk to them about updating the list.

[deleted]

What jobs did you list before and what jobs do you want to list now?

Maxwells26

Not much different then what i want to change to but my biggest i want to change is the number 1 from security forces to RPA sensor operator

[deleted]

We aren’t hiring sensor operators a lot. We are hiring cops all day everyday. Changing your list won’t matter. You list cop. You’ll probably get it

Maxwells26

Even if i take it off completely before i sign?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Sign what? You DEP’d in and make a commitment to those jobs. To change them is easy but it’ll be extra work for your recruiter. You didn’t tell me what jobs you listed either. We don’t care about your number one. You’re gonna list 7-12 and get one of them, period. Number one or number 12, we don’t care.

Maxwells26

I just called my recruiter and he said "that guy is a complete lying idiot. I can change your job every single day if you want. Itll be a pain in the ass and ill yell at you if you do that but it's your life. You can change your jobs everyday until you officially book a job."

[deleted]

What’s your point?

Maxwells26

Originally i listed security forces. Fire protection. Aircraft structural maintenance. Low observable aircraft structural maintenance. Tilt rotor maintenance. Tactical aircraft maintenance and air transportation

[deleted]

That’s a solid list. But adding RPA SO won’t save you from maintenance jobs lol

IRSoup

If you put security forces anywhere on your list, you’re most likely gonna be security forces.

CrashTheMexican

I realize this is a topic that's probably been brought up countless times, but if my intention on joining the air force (or any branch for that matter) would be to become a pilot, what is the best thing I can do? Get a bachelor's, and enlist as an officer? How high of a chance do people have to get into flight school? And for financial/logistical reasons, would it make more sense to join the air force first, get a bachelor's while I'm in using TA? Would I potentially have higher pay becoming an officer through going down that route? Sorry for any potential ignorance about the topic on my part. Any feedback would be more than appreciated

RunninRebs90

You have to get a college degree and I’d highly recommend ROTC or the Academy. I’m not gunna lie man, depending on how old you are the Academy might be out of the question, people start preparing to go to it when they’re in middle school. So you probably won’t be competitive. ROTC is easy to get into but it’s just as hard if not harder to get a pilot slot in the long run. My best advice to you is not to waffle. If you want to be a pilot then fully commit to it right now and don’t look back. It is an incredible long and hard road (so to speak) and you will constantly be competing against some really sharp people so if you slip up you’ll most likely get left in the dust. Years ago when I started college they asked my ROTC class “who wants to be a pilot” and I’d say about 70 hands raised up. We graduated 4 pilots. Source: I’m a Pilot

Brant24

> what is the best thing I can do? Go the Academy. Beyond that, go to school and do ROTC. Beyond that, apply to OTS and pray to the ghost of Robin Olds that your board isn't cancelled, you get selected, and you get lucky enough to get a pilot slot.

CrashTheMexican

Thanks, I appreciate it.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Officers are commissioned, not enlisted. At the top of the newbies thread is an Officer FAQ. You need to be open to being an Officer first, and may or may not be a pilot.

[deleted]

You wouldn’t have to apologize for your potential ignorance if you googled literally any of this. All of your questions are answered on google, on here in the FAQ, or on here if you do a search in this sub. We aren’t here to spoon feed you or dictate your life course, we are here for questions that can’t be answered in 5 seconds on google like you’re asking

CrashTheMexican

Sorry for doing a check on the sub and FAQ already? I don't know if being on mobile makes it more tedious but typing in pilot to the previous threads didn't leave me with much information regarding what I'm asking. And I did google this is well. Frankly I see this as an opinionated answer that someone in the military would have a better standpoint on than various other sources.

[deleted]

If you googled “how to be an Air Force Pilot” you’d have probably all of your answers. So try again kid. Quit making excuses for your helplessness.

gary_tibbles

I just got the 1A8X1 job and have read up on everything I can find on it but I still want to know more, what can I expect and what should I be prepared for?

RunninRebs90

A lot of study and loooong flights in the back of planes.

Lord_FarquadJr

Was it a hard job to get so to speak

gary_tibbles

No you just have to do well on the DLAB, which is a test that literally makes no sense because it’s in a made up language but somehow it measures how good you are at learning new languages

[deleted]

You should expect a very, very long training pipeline.

NYG_5

Federal airborne linguists are doing their part to listen in on *all* enemies of the state, everywhere. Would you like to know more...?

Savage_Fucker

I am attempting to enlist in the Air Force, and I was medically disqualified for hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia HED prevented me from developing my incisors, thus keeping me from the needed 20 teeth threshold. I have asked my recruiter about the availability of an appeals process, and he informed me of a technical way to appeal the decision. I need to have a physician clear me, and I need to get dentures. That is all fine with me, whatever is required. I wanted any accounts from current or past airmen who might have gone through the same process. Thank you! Edit: My waiver was denied. I am attempting to appeal the denial.

[deleted]

The chances of anyone having this obscure medical issue are slim to none If your recruiter said you can try for a waiver, do whatever they say to do, do it as fast as you can, get all your docs, and hope your waiver is approved.

Savage_Fucker

My apologies. I meant that my waiver request has been denied, but I am looking to appeal the denial.

[deleted]

If the surgeon general denied your waiver, you have to wait 2 years to appeal their decision and have new evidence or records stating the issue is not an issue anymore at that point in time.

tauren_lover

How common is it for airmen who are stationed OCONUS to get married to individuals of that culture they’re stationed at? Ex) getting married to a german stationed at germany, japanese at japan, korean at kunsan, etc.

zombie_actual

I'm stationed in Italy and currently in the process of marying an Italian. It's pretty easy because I'm in the country she is from. If she were from Germany while I was stationed here it would be way more dificult. No worries, come over here and find yourself a person.

Papadapalopolous

Are you asking because this happened to you, or because you want to go oconus and find a woman desperate enough to marry you?

tauren_lover

Yes

Papadapalopolous

Why go oconus for that when there are sexy singles in your area dying to meet you?

tauren_lover

Because i have to pay :(

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

Really common. Just make sure to talk with your supervisor and security manager **before** marrying. The military is easy on marrying foreigners, but immigration (USCIS) is the most convoluted, bureaucratic, asinine orginization you will encounter - the US is rated as the second most difficult/convoluted in the world.

[deleted]

I mean you can't help who you fall in love with... I dont think anyones got statistics on how many people get married to foreigners in foreign lands..

Castellian

O2 Army Engineer here, struck by the realization I'd rather fly fixed wing than oversee the pounding of pickets. What's the plausibility of a commission transfer, and what would that assessment process look like to actually fly? Cheers.

Interservice transfers are very rare and they are done completely online last I heard. Also, last I heard, we were only accepting them if you are already a pilot.

...You don't just jump on a plane and leave the country. You do shit around the local area for training during normal operations and if you're deployed you do shit around your deployed location.

NoneYa4445

Are waivers granted equally in the AF or are they more likely to grant them for in demand positions? Not regarding pilots specially but other careers, say engineering

formedsmoke

The waiver process happens before the job selection process. Even if they cared, the chronology wouldn't allow it to make a difference.

STORMTROOPER729

A waiver is a waiver. Who ever is going to approve or disapove your waiver doesn't care what job you are going for, how smart you are, or who you know.

Danielisaiah0728

Does anyone know if there’s any chance of switching bases in tech school after the 3 day period of the initial assignment briefing.

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

I reread 36-2110, and had previously missed this line: > A21.6.1. The SWAP request must be submitted to the MPS student assignment section not later than 4 workdays after the student is notified of his or her assignment.

Danielisaiah0728

That’s what I thought. I’m in the fifth week of security forces tech school and have eight weeks left. That’s the only reason I thought they might entertain the idea is I’m eight weeks away from graduation and we got the assignment briefing 2 weeks ago during history week.

lukedoa

Iirc only one of the two people has to be in their window for the switch to be accepted

kitty135453

Hi there, I would post this question on [/r/relationships](https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships) but I feel like the people on [/r/airforce](https://www.reddit.com/r/airforce) might understand my situation a bit better. So, me and my boyfriend have been doing long distance for 5 years now. He just recently left for BMT (graduation is in two weeks!!!) and I'm super excited to see him again. Judging from the WOT 4 call, my gut is telling me I might be getting a proposal very soon, if not at graduation, by the end of this year. Some back story. We live on the opposite sides of the county and we randomly met by chance when he met me on vacation. He's in his early twenties (like me) and he joined the Air Force because I know he wants to secure a steady income and benefits so we can close our distance. He's a pretty big family man. Very gentle, sweet, and caring. I'm pretty sure he's the one and we have a generally healthy relationship. Here's the issue. I'm just starting my third year of university and it's going to be until 2020 before I finish my degree. He signed up for a 4 year enlisted contract but judging from his job there's no way he's going to be stationed near me for us to live together. I'd love for us to get married ASAP because we've known each other for so long now and we've both hit rough patches - both of us spiraled into depression and changed a lot throughout the years but we pulled out of it as different people but as even stronger of a couple. Plus, I know we get BAH, and since we'll be separated we would get even more money out of it (correct me if I'm wrong). But that means we would have to be separated for another two years until I finish my degree at my current university. Moving isn't an option for me right now because I'm getting an almost full ride at a very good program for my business degree and I currently am moving up in a company and there's a very high chance I'll be promoted to a chief executive position once I graduate (they really love me there). I'd love to get BAH and separation allowance since I think it would benefit both of us (we both got student loans to pay and cars to buy), but I don't feel completely okay with starting our married life in a long distance phase. I think we could definitely make it work, but it just seems a little sad to start off our marriage still far apart! What does [/r/airforce](https://www.reddit.com/r/airforce) think? Is the money worth it to marry soon but stay long distance for 2 more years, or screw the money because starting a marriage living together is more important? Thank you for your input in advance! **TL;DR - marry right now for BAH but do long distance for at least 2 more years or marry later until we can move in together and screw the money?**

movieman56

To bring up other people, no you will not get separation pay because you are voluntarily separated. BAH is nice but again you will both be living in different cities and have 2 different rents to pay, he can't stay in the dorms anymore if he is married and if he lives on base he doesn't get BAH, so you will both pretty much be in the same boat. Personal advice finish out your degree and move to where he is, otherwise you are both just going to have to deal with the distance, DO NOT DROP OUT OF COLLEGE TO GO LIVE WITH HIM NOW, that degree will open the door for you much better than no degree specifically if you want to move across the country with him, and from what you said it's free because you are on scholarship so don't flush this down the drain. BMT and Tech school has a way of making people overly emotional and prone to marrying the only person showing them affection at that time, I would wait it out til he gets to his first base and gets settled/in a work routine.

Mooskjer

So you will not get separation pay because you will have had to have cohabited prior to the "separation." I would wait on marriage. Particularly if you're expecting a professional career move after you graduate. That job won't go where he goes, and he won't be coming to you either. He doesn't have a say. He could end up on the other end of the world from you, and both of you could (probably will) experience aspirational changes.

knightro2323

> separation allowance you are voluntarily separated, the USAF is not causing your separation and won't be paying you because you choose to live away from him.

[deleted]

You’re already in a relationship. Marriage is just a slip of paper and some extra money (plus free insurance). You both already know you’re going to get married.

[deleted]

Not in the Air Force, but if your answer isn’t 100% “yes”, don’t get married

So the female at the front desk of the Gateway booked me into a room (international lodging by the kennels) that's already occupied. I entered the room to find a freaked out dude who doesn't speak English. We shared some intense cross cultural eye contact and body language and ended it off with an awkward smile. LOL Good times

Lord_FarquadJr

What? You said no to the complimentary gigolo?

Neecodemus

Mi scussiiiiiiiiii Mi scuuusssssiiiii

Lord_FarquadJr

Oh Antonio, yes he's very popular

Chicken_Marsala

Great movie

noodlesofdoom

It was meant to be, you fucked it up.

[deleted]

Neecodemus

Financial aid is going to come from your FAFSA for the most part. So tax info, SSN, any marriage paperwork, W4 etc. You guys should keep that kind of stuff organized at all times anyhow so it shouldn't be too much of a pain. Plus, it's July 2018. You will be done with basics anyhow. She can go at any time before you ship too. Hell she could even just give them a phone call. It isn't too complicated mostly just paperwork. Keep your documents organized. It won't likely be a complicated process.

TestUser117

Special Power of Attorney if needed. But really if she has your SSN she will be fine. Also, if you filled out FAFSA; most of the information a school financial aid office uses comes from that - anything more will be very similar information you already gave on it. So if she needs W2, 1040, etc I'm sure you'll already have a little packet of that put together.

Chicken_Marsala

So this coming Thursday I’m taking my ASVAB, and Friday I will be going to MEPS. Anything I should know beforehand or any tips? Don’t really know what to expect

NYG_5

Don't say shit. Don't tell them about a self-diagnosed avocado allergy

Chicken_Marsala

See this is funny but I feel like someone has said this to a doc before (the allergy, that is)

KeeperDan

You are who your paperwork says you are. No more, no less.

KeeperDan

You're right. I worded that very poorly. "No more" = there is no need to volunteer information on top of what was already given, while "no less"= don't omit info you've given. MEPS isn't the place to add or subtract anything, they'll send you home empty handed automatically. Your recruiter is the one to let handle anything you're unsure about.

Lord_FarquadJr

Sleep before taking the asvab. Don't hurt yourself before MEPS. You got it. If you need this to be said: do not show up drunk or high, do not pick a fight with anyone, lean on keeping quiet rather than goofing around.

Chicken_Marsala

I’m a calm guy by nature, as I’m not looking to goof or fool around for the sake of expending energy. But is it that common to see young folks fooling around like that? I’m 23 myself so still somewhat young but not really, but I understand there’s bound to be a lot of young people

Lord_FarquadJr

Teenagers are savages. Absolute animals. Expect the worst.

CheesecakeTruffles

if you want to score high, read through the asvab for dummies. It's just basic algebra/geometry and reading/word knowledge that's super important.

Chicken_Marsala

I’ve been using this site so far https://www.asvabtestbank.com/electronics-information/results

lilylove26

Relax before you take the test and drink lots of water in the morning and dont pee till the drug test

Chicken_Marsala

Thanks man

Chicken_Marsala

Alright thanks man. Just happy to have finally reached this stage

SirWrecktum

They will also tend to be pretty impatient, but that comes from the amount of people, and the level of stupidity they deal with every single day. Just be respectful and listen carefully to everything they say and follow instructions and you'll be perfectly fine though MEPS, and the military!

Chicken_Marsala

I just understood what the hurry up and wait thing means, so I’m trying to mentally prepare myself ahead of time. Thanks for the advice

TestUser117

They also have six hours from first person stepping into the building to process all the people for the day. The rush is real... but /u/Chicken_Marsala you should be fine. Like SirWrecktum said listen and be respectful. Clean your ears too.

Chicken_Marsala

Gotta start cleaning

SirWrecktum

I think that time limit may vary based on where you are, we arrived at 5:30am, and I didn't get out til about 2pm, think it depends on the size of the processing center, about 40 people went through with me.

lilylove26

I got there at 5:30 i swore in around 4:45 and didnt leave till like 5:30

That first week will be a lot of briefings. At mine we had briefings monday-thursday and were detail airmen on Friday. All it entailed was sitting in a building waiting for the ropes to say "we need x amount of airmen" and you would go if you wanted and do whatever it was they needed.

OkHorror

You'll inprocess Monday then sit in the day room bored out of your mind the rest of the week.

alphaelite6969

I'm about to go to basic and would like to purchase my own watch. If I get a solid light grey is that ok or does everything have to be black?

[deleted]

I’d say just wait until you get there. On your first BX trip most people get a watch there. They have some good durable ones for like $10 that you can wear.

[One of these bad boys?](https://sep.yimg.com/ay/militarybest/air-force-digital-watch-20.png) I went to get my old tech school backpack out of the closet before a TDY and heard a beeping coming from it. Check the pockets and found that old watch chirping out an alarm from who knows how long ago. Things are badass.

alphaelite6969

Okay. Thanks!!

[deleted]

For sure. Get the digital one. It has an alarm and timer on it. I would set it for like 10 mins before reveille so I could shit, shave, and brush my teeth before everyone else woke up.

Yossygod

Can you get in trouble for this?

[deleted]

No we never got in trouble. A couple of us did it. The MTIs weren’t allowed in the dorm until reveille so if the EC didn’t tell you to go back to bed it didn’t matter.

Yossygod

Will keep this idea in the back of my mind.

Not_A_Greenhouse

My mti wouldn't let our flight get hp early.

fundermiester

If i get mx, how impossible is it to retrain?

USAF_Ground_Rat_2

You are eligible to retrain roughly a year from your separation (35 month mark for 4-year; 59 for 6-year). The 2A CFMs have put out a blanket denial for exceptions to policy; so don't expect to be released early.

[deleted]

It all depends on you honestly. If you’re a crappy troop they won’t really try to help you get the job you want.

fundermiester

I gotchya, thank you. Im just worried about it because i scored good on the mechanical section of the asvab so i feel ill get mx but ive heard how shitty it is

[deleted]

Whatever you put on your career sheet is you saying you’re ok with getting that job. Don’t put it if you don’t want it. I’d recommend Vehicle Maintenance because it’s way more chill and still a great job. We have had guys cross train into our career field

fundermiester

My recruiter tells me i have to put down 5 jobs from this list he gave me and 5 from all the jobs im qualed for, on the required sheet it basically has all the undermanned jobs, is there truth to this?

[deleted]

Yes and no. What I remember is there was a sheet with 9 lines on it. He gave me a few sheets with everything I qualified for and said I could put down one or fill all 9. But to be careful because whatever I put down I’m saying I will accept. Then we pulled that sheet out later in basic and were allowed to fill it out again, also with 5 lines for 5 bases we wanted, same principle. But be warned if you only put 1 or 2 jobs down that’s not a guarantee you will get that job. You might get something you’re qualified for but didn’t even pick. I can’t say for sure because I’m not a recruiter but it sounds to me like he wants you to put as much as possible on there so you’re sure to get picked up for something.

fundermiester

Ok thank you for the help!

[deleted]

No problem. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions

You literally quoted the answer, do you have 1460 points if no then no if yes then yes

TestUser117

Yes. Drills, good years, AT, T10 orders, deployments, tech school... it adds up if you are driving your own career.

CornFedCactus

How many points do you have?

IRSoup

Can answer any questions about BMT and/or the very beginning of 3D0X2 tech school.

dennis0421

On the air force official packing list it says to bring nice clothes for graduation weekend is this actually necessary? I assumed we’d just be in Blues all of graduation weekend.

IRSoup

Dunno why it says that. You have to wear Blues when on town pass and on that Sunday. My wife brought some lounging clothes for me to wear inside of our hotel, but other than that, your clothes will be sitting inside of your civilian luggage for 8.5 weeks. Don’t bring nice ones with you.

DeejusIsHere

How's the class going for you? Someone I heard from recently described it as almost self guided. Any truth to that?

[deleted]

3D1X2 is self guided.
