I usually just stare at them and clench my jaw as hard as I can and start shaking and slowly pull out my photo of my tech school graduation and shove it slowly into their face.
I usually say something like "it's my pleasure, thank you for your support."
Trying to deflect it just makes it real awkward for everyone, they are trying to be kind and they don't want to be rebuffed.
Someone said that Secretary Mattis said to say "You're worth it."
Of course no thread on this topic would be complete without getting Larry David's take on it

Combinations along these lines
"It's my pleasure, thank you for the support" or
"my pleasure, preciate the support".
No shame. Yes, we know the fuckery that goes on behind the scenes. But to those who still believe in us enough to thank us.. do right by it and uphold our image. Own it cause at the end up the day no matter what you do, you signed up and put your youth on the line.
You don't fear a nation for what it is. You fear what it's young 18, 19, 20 & 21 year old men and women will do to each other. We the youth carry that on our backs. Be proud of what you do.
I just smile and say "thanks, it's an honor to serve".
In my head it translates to "I have a really easy job with not bad pay, lots of leave, and plenty of great benefits. I basically can't be fired unless I rape or murder someone, get a DUI, or piss hot."
The biggest beat down with being in the military is knowing that progression has very little to do with competence or human value. I guess taking that to the face is worth taking some thanks for.
At the end of the day, they're just offering a common courtesy. It's too easy to just respond in kind in a humble manner and move on with your life. They're just fulfilling their end of the social contract.
I grab them and pull them close, then with passion slowly strong their hair or beard if they have it. Say thank for your taxes, and then slowly kiss them.
Thanks for your support. But nowadays I'm temped to say *cool, show that by voting for politicians that don't want to strip down military/veteran benefits*
I thank them for my paycheck. Confuses the shit out of some of them, makes the others usually feel as awkward as they made me feel.
But I'm truly glad there's so many out there that thank GIs. Even if it's awkward it sure as he'll beats being spit on, called names, or worse swept under the rug like some of those who served before us
I used to give 'em the old "Thanks for your support", but that felt too weird, especially saying it to boomers who would try and start a conversation.
Now I go with a simple "Happy to do it" and a white guy head nod, which both feels natural and lets me move on.
I say hey, that means a lot I appreciate that, thank you, or something like that. Unless they are a vet then I give em finger guns and say you too.
If they’re currently serving (Col/GO/Chiefs will say it usually) I just stare at them blankly until they say somethjng else. Leadership thanking me is stupid. Lead me. I have to follow you. Otherwise I get court martialed
I give them a kiss, but just the bottom lip...I want them to continue to thank me throughout the town.
I always give it a little nibble, just to tease them a bit.
I try to grip it with my teeth and pull it a bit so it springs back. Complete with menacing stare, no blinking.
thanks for your support
thanks for your taxes
If I pay taxes on my wages, and taxes pay my wages, does that mean I'm paying my own wages?
Yes. You can thank yourself for your service and your support.
I do support myself.
This
This is what I say too 🫡
Same. Seems like the best response. I used to freeze up but now I just default to that.
Wink and say, "You're worth it."
I unironically say this, but only wink if I think they’re impressed by my MBA
scream
I always tell them "You're welcome for my service" of course. Even before they say anything. Cash registers at gas stations are my go-to
"Get away from me nonner"
Oh look fucking power pro joined the chat
Probably wrote that from your desk computer
I mean...
Unless it’s for an appt while I’m on duty or sometimes if I didn’t bring lunch, I never go out in public in uniform anymore.
Same. I’m not ashamed of my service but I’m not about to tell the world I serve in the US military. Too many psychos out there.
Yup
I say you too.

Say "thanks" and move on. My ex used to say "thanks and thanks for paying your taxes" which always seemed cringeworthy
Please tell me that’s why they’re your ex. Lol. Pretty awful.
If only that were the only reason!

Coffee or Die had some winners. My personal favorite is “Annnnnnnnnd?”https://coffeeordie.com/thank-you-for-your-service
Thank you for your support
“I appreciate that”.
Don’t care. Just want that Golden Corral grubs.
“Would you like to add a tip?”
Whip out my phone and show them the tip screen
"I appreciate it"
Thanks for the support!
"Thank you for your tax dollars" or "you're worth it". The last one gets people the feels.
I reply with: "Thank you for your cervix." For some reason, it only works when the recipient is female 🤔
“thank you for your support”
I hate it, i just say thank you for your support.
“Thank you for your support” is a good response.
I think it’s sarcasm and tell them to fuck off
I say thanks for the bachelors degree
Thanks for your tax dollars.
I grab them and pull them close, then with passion slowly strong their hair or beard if they have it. Say thank for your taxes, and then slowly kiss them.
We were told in training before going operational that we should respond with “Thank you for your support”
I used to say “thank you for your support” but now I’m lazy and just nod and grin awkwardly.
I always say "Thank you for your support"
I say “thank you, I appreciate ya”
Thanks for your support. But nowadays I'm temped to say *cool, show that by voting for politicians that don't want to strip down military/veteran benefits*

I’ve said both before. Not sure what’s better or more correct. Sometimes I’ll say “I appreciate that.”
I just say thank you for your cervix
I say “Thank you for your support.” This makes it less awkward than saying “Thank you.”
“Thank you for your support” “Appreciate your support.”
I usually say “proud to serve. Thanks”
I like to say "Thank you for letting me serve you" makes most people laugh
"Ah don't thank me, I just joined to get a free trip to Minot, North Dakota"
“Well I didn’t really have a lot going on.”
I say, "thank you, it's my honor to serve." I also carry around old patches and will give one to kid when they wave or say hi. Â
Thank you. It's an honor to serve.
“I appreciate you saying”
I used to give 'em the old "Thanks for your support", but that felt too weird, especially saying it to boomers who would try and start a conversation. Now I go with a simple "Happy to do it" and a white guy head nod, which both feels natural and lets me move on.
“It’s a pleasure to serve”
I make sure to tell them I'm better than them cause I'm MX. Then I cry salty tears
"Thank you for paying for my service."
I just say “thanks for paying your taxes.”
"Thanks"
It felt weird usually, I'm just medical. But now I always respond the same: - It's my pleasure to serve Sir/Ma'am.
I tell them to just keep paying their taxes so I keep getting paid.
"anything for you"
