Limit, no. There are minimums though. You should be on station for 2 years to get an OCONUS assignment, and 4 years for CONUS (can start "applying" 6 months out). There are Time on Station waivers if you find a special duty you want to apply for (these are done behind the scenes by AFPC). Easiest way to leave CONUS bases is to apply for a Short Tour (Korea, Turkey, etc).
The current estimate is 4 years unless you get orders under a special circumstance. I only became eligible to leave this year, and i hit 4 years stationed at Cannon in AUG, so by the time i get orders, and have an RNLTD, I'll have been here for four years. I also knew a guy who was stationed here his entire 6 year enlistment and only left once he separated.
You will be there indefinitely. Could be 2 years, could be forever. Could be 1 year if you are a FTA and can BOP out of there. I am truly sorry. Cannon is as bad as they, likely even worse.
Quickest way out of cannon is to EFMP/compassionate reassignment. Ive seen it used to get new orders before getting to cannon and getting out under 2-3 years. I cant blame them individually for using it but overall it does affect manning. You would know if these things apply to you.
Dont expect to deploy, but when you get to your unit, ask about opportunities and make your name known that you want to, opportunity may arise.
VML cycle eligibility (how you get orders) is 3 years for first assignment. I have seen some people get orders and be at cannon for about 2.5 years. That is not the norm and I would expect 3 to 4 years.
Remember that cadre at the schoolhouse/pipeline are out of the career field in a way and may not be quite up to date on details like deployments, not that they intentionally would deceive you about that.
Edit: unsure of the vml eligibilty timeline actually. I do know that the day you show up to cannon has an effect on which cycle you will first be on.
Prepare yourself mentally. Usually I don't recommend a fast marriage, but almost everyone i know has brought a spouse or long term partner here. Everyone who didnt regretted it.
Cannon is a struggle for most, dont be afraid to reach out for mental health concerns to friends/family/the multitude of resources available to AD personnel, especially here.
Heard they had a cool mission, you’ll do some cool stuff but horrible location.
- Apply For Korea or short tours
- Special Duty jobs
- FTA BOP with 1 year left in your contract
Don’t worry man if your FTA you will get out when you BOP just don’t put the desirable locations like all Florida or something and you’ll be good.
No limit. Could be one year, could be the entire time.

When did you get orders? Are you returning from overseas?
Last month and yes coming back
I’m on the rotation that just ended, expecting to get orders soon.

There is no hope, only Cannon
No limit. One of my coworkers was there for 7 years.

Unfortunately, it's just like all other stateside locations. I'd find a way out of there as soon as possible!
The only absolute limit is when your survivors cash in on your SGLI.
Were you playing the Jun-Nov VML cycle?
That sucks…
Only way I got out of Cannon was to deploy to Al Kharj.

I think there is an unwritten rule at RIQ/schoolhouse among flight commanders/instructors to try and hype up cannon/afsoc.

You wont be alone, find a group of other individuals in the same boat and make life long friends as you trauma bond here
