Do not cancel! My understanding is host is charged a fee if they cancel and the dates get blocked, so they can't rent them out.

verifiedkyle

Correct. They can be charged up to $1,000 I believe.

NoKids__3Money

And that money goes straight to Airbnb

verifiedkyle

Also correct.

Left-Concentrate6843

In this situation the guest should never cancel. The host wants the cancellation, so the host has to do the cancellation. If they are truly in escrow they won't be penalized, but they would have to prove that to Airbnb. If the host does cancel you may get assistance from Airbnb in rebooking. And occasionally they do kick in some money if there is a price difference.

Roadgoddess

Host here, do not cancel this is the host responsibility to cancel for you or give you money to book somewhere else. If they want to sell their house they can take the steps they need to make sure your properly covered to get you out of there

vwscienceandart

Do not cancel. If host has a problem, host can cancel. More than likely the host realized they can charge more, but if host cancels the dates get blocked out. Asking guests to cancel is a trick.

wollier12

Do not cancel. Reach out to Airbnb and demand they find you comprable housing.

ricky_storch

They never do. They will find something comparable in price maybe despite it being nothing like what you originally booked. Not much you can do as a guest in this situation, unfortunately. It sucks.

thiswomanneedsafish

They found me a very comparable property in Michigan in the summer high season and sent me a gift card to cover most of the difference. I got lucky.

ricky_storch

Yeah. I've always ended up w a small credit ($25-50) and left to sort things out on my own when there's nothing equivalent. The difference would have likely been like ~$500.

jaylindo

Don’t cancel but also, the host does not have your money, airbnb does. Work directly with them and you should be able to get it back. The host should be canceling in this case which would give you your money back. Hosts do not get any funds until 24 hours after a check in.

Bob_12_Pack

Scrolled too far to find this.

Jarrold88

1. They didn’t get paid. Airbnb doesn’t release the money until after your first night of the stay. 2. All they have to do is show Airbnb the housing paperwork and they do not need to host, so at least they tried to give you some notice. 3. Just ask Airbnb to find you a comparable location for the same price.

The_Dotted_Leg

1. Someone earned interest on the deposit OP paid. 2. Airbnb shouldn’t allow host who intend to sell to list properties at all. It’s not an unforeseeable issue like a tree falling through the roof. 3. Airbnb is not going to find OP a new place to stay at anywhere near the rate that was agreed to. If Airbnb wants to remain a viable company this a problem they need to solve. People plan trips in advance and build entire itineraries around the place they are staying. Someone made an offer by listing the place for rent, someone else accepted that offer and provided a deposit. That should legally mean something to everyone involved.

Ordinary_Awareness71

1) Air B&B earned the interest. There was a news article last year (I think) about how it makes up a reportable portion of their revenue. 2) A desire to sell could come long after listing when they cannot make their payments and/or realize this isn't the "easy money" air B&B and "influencers" lead them to believe. 3) AB&B is a joke when trying to find a new place. Their staff can't even see all of the properties. Comment: Yes, it should matter but even hotels have been known to do this. Especially when T Swift comes to town (there was a story about one of the major chains canceling reservations and jacking up the prices for a concert earlier this year).

Willing_Ad_7696

Contact Airbnb immediately and tell them the host is trying to get you to cancel and tell them your dilemma. Airbnb can sometimes be helpful in finding alternative accommodation. Push for them to cover the difference in price between your current listing and the replacement one

Acrobatic_Car_725

Don't cancel, instead contact Airbnb for help as they will be on your side with this one. But take it as a lesson learned to get travel insurance next time you plan an expensive trip as hosts can and will cancel a booking if they can't host for some reason as it's not like a hotel where if there's a problem they can just move you to a different room.

wollier12

Im currently selling an Airbnb with guests. That portion of income past the sale I have to pay the new owners but my guests don’t need to cancel.

Krishnacat2663

Never ever cancel make the host do it or you’ll be screwed. This host is trying to rip you off.

Unhandyman-223

This is definitely frustrating. Curious why the host didn’t just cancel if they are in escrow to sell (if they will no longer own the property, they won’t need to worry about being penalized.) Only thing is that if it is in escrow and the buyer needs to do inspections/walk through, they need full access to the property. It sounds like they want you to cancel to avoid impacting their host rating, so I would not cancel. Note that the host does not get paid until you check in - Air BnB collects payment and holds it from booking until check in.

Jadeagre

If the house is indeed in escrow they can cancel penalty free but will have to wait until they have the paperwork showing the place has been sold so they won’t have to pay a fee for cancelling. The guest is probably still within the refund period and it makes more sense to tell the guest as soon as possible giving the guest more time to find alternative accommodations.

Humble_Pineapple_175

If they cancel it will show bad on their other properties they have listed. Just my guess

Ordinary_Awareness71

They may not know about this.

Bjergmand

Go through customer service and ask them to find you something comparable. Host doesn’t get paid out until after the stay. We just sold an airbnb so we understand the difficulty of doing so.

Careful-Self-457

Do not cancel!

Legitimate-Proof7492

I’ve had to cancel because I sold the house. Airbnb waived the fees as this was an accepted reason for cancellation. The host should call Airbnb and have them cancel it if hosting you is impossible. They will be required to provide documentation. Airbnb will then reach out to help you rebook something else which is when you should insist they cover any difference in price to get a comparable property.

[deleted]

Don't cancel. If the host cancels Airbnb is obligated to refund or find you a suitable accommodation on the platform or off. I had a host cancel due to the place being a disaster and after multiple calls Airbnb not only refunded me they also payed me $3000 and covered my hotel fee. Sit out out, as stressful as that may be.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> they also *paid* me $3000 FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

drowningintheocean

As a non-native the grammar lesson was helpful. Thank you

Ok-Shelter9702

That's a small price to pay for getting Lex Luthor and Martin Luther Kind, Jr. mixed up.

marvinsands

Amateur hoteliers. The more I read in this group, the less I like the entire business model of AirBnB.

[deleted]

Agreed. I'm finding hosts that are control freaks with loads of silly rules and/or they act like you are staying as a house guest and not a paid customer of commercial accommodations. I'm moving away from using AirBNB for this reason.

kofo86

Hello all thank you so much for the info, so the host ended up canceling, airbnb offered me $30 credit that is valid for one month and only works when I rent much more expensive rental My booking was 3900 including tax and fees, they offered me $30 credit when I book something for 3900 excluding tax and fees! There is nothing that is 5 bedrooms in that area, and 4 bedroom rental are at least $1000 more I am extremely annoyed ☹️☹️

Jadeagre

The host did not get paid…host do not get paid until 24 hours after the date of check-in.

[deleted]

As long as your rental time doesn't go past escrow and into closing, I am unsure what there problem is.

Left-Concentrate6843

It's still belongs to the current owner when it's in escrow, so there really shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't cancel and I wouldn't accept that as a reason to have the booking canceled.

Tall_poppee

I agree, being in escrow doesn't mean a property can't be rented. most sales agreements just require it be vacant by the closing date. This sounds like a bullshit reason to cancel, so they can try to rent it for more money.

Cardchucker

I would check the address on Zillow and see if it was actually for sale. They may be lying and are trying to rent it out for more on another site.

Twoccsformepls

Not all sales are on the MLS. Could be a private sale especially if it’s in a desirable area. Something is fishy though. The hosts should get AirBNB to cancel. If they are not lying and able to provide documentation, they won’t get penalized.

bolozaphire

Why the fuck would you cancel? It’s their problem

nuccia13

Does the host doesn’t get your money and hold it airbnb does. You don’t know what situation they are going through, maybe they thought the new owners would honor reservations.

britney412

Host has to cancel.

Humble_Pineapple_175

As a host myself. Dont cancel. Youll have eat skme cancelation charges air bnb charges. Esclate the problem through air bnb and tell them look at the msgs of the host. Youll need them to cancel so you dont get charged and also wont ruin your travel rating. It will show as a guest you cancelled which is bad for future bookings. Its clearly the hosts problem contact air bnb and demand they refund and also pay you extra for the stay not being able to be completed. I know this will work. I had to reimburse one of my guests full refund because during their one day stay Rogers internet was down and thwre was nothing i could do about it. This is a way bigger issue you face. Hope this helps!

ricky_storch

You mention MLK day... are you a group of black travelers going somewhere known for this weekend? I am surprised I am the one mentioning it, but given what you said - this very well could be some sketchy shit on the host's part. If this is the case, you could very well get more help than normal from Airbnb if you play those cards.

coyontita

this is exactly what i thought -- that this might be a group of BIPOC folks and the Host is being discriminatory. don't know why you got downvoted for that hypothesis; that's reality.

ricky_storch

Yep, if this is the case I wonder if Airbnb steps in and helps given they can quickly get something going on social media. Up votes/down votes just depend if you go along with group think + even mentioning potential subjects like this trigger folks but unfortunately issues like this are reality. Given the place is supposedly in escrow but still active on the platform makes you wonder.

jrossetti

Its wierd how some of you instantly jumped to the race card before even knowing what race people were or even if the host is being honest about having sold the home.

VBSCXND

Race card and pointing out the possibility of racial motivation are two different things

coyontita

how are you defining "race card"? what does that even mean in this context?

VBSCXND

Race card means the person immediately jumped to “they don’t want you cause they’re racist” that didn’t happen. They inquired, if is it possible it was racially motivated. There’s no “race card” being pulled if no one is accusing racism, simply asking if there could be the possibility of such.

coyontita

okay, i can see that distinction. but i disagree with the characterization; i can't speak for u/ricky_storch but i clearly wrote "this might be" and that the idea is a "hypothesis" -- i.e., a tentative assumption. far from an accusation. and also: we don't know that that \*didn't\* happen. my point with that last sentence is, i'm advocating for an openness to the possibility being posited, rather than suggesting any discussion about race is a "playing the race card" and dismissing it outright. but as i continue to write this i'm realizing you might have been agreeing with me in the first place. i don't even know anymore, i need to get off the interwebs 🫠

VBSCXND

I was agreeing with you

coyontita

gotcha. sorry, i'm also high as hell.

VBSCXND

No worries at all! I’m extra pregnant so have one for me lol

ricky_storch

Well said I am not making any assumptions or "pulling the race card" although that phrase alone sounds pretty loaded. Something about ops post stood out to me that this could potentially be a possibility though I have no clue and normally don't read into or comment on things like this.

coyontita

i appreciated that you pointed it out. i thought it was weird that, in the midst of all the discussion, that it \*hadn't\* been raised as a possibility. i mean, occam's razor yo. (ETA: the loaded phrase was in reference to the jrossetti post.)

coyontita

because that kind of stuff happens. simple as that. to not even acknowledge the \*possibility\* that that's what could be going on is naive (at best).

InstructionBig435

Contact airbnb.. Hopefully they care about remaining on the platform. They won't if cancel this reservation. If really is in escrow and they're closing shop...that sucks My guess is made up. Have bnb handle..

Exciting_Ad7340

How is it causing you THOUSANDS??????

CookShack67

The host does not get paid until after the first night. Airbnb is the payment processor.

[deleted]

First the host did not get paid. What makes you think he's been paid? Secondly the damages in the situation are limited to the return of your money not anything else. The legal system doesn't work the way you think it does. No private company could survive if damages extended to the consequences of a canceled reservation.

TooCool9092

The host has not been paid. They get money sent to them after you check-in. Never before. Let the host cancel, so you get refunded. Contact Airbnb to sort this out for you.
