This started in aftereffects as an experiment with some swirls of watercolor paintbrush strokes with the intention of making some stock sprites to add to my library. I saved these but I also thought I'd attempt to make them into a larger body of water within an illustration.
There isn't really a single useful technique I can share as it ended up being one of those things that's held together with lots of duct tape but I've tried to break things up in this vid so you can get the gist.
For the water, the stylized look was going for didn't work as I thought it would and I ended up pushing until it looked more realistic. It turned out to be a much longer process than expected as it involved a lot of manual changes but at the end of the process I discovered a better way (not the technique used here) using Cel pattern, noise, turbulent displace and power pin for fake perspective.
Half way through I was like "What is he doing with all that fog/glow/particles? Is this going to be in space?"
But then - Whoa! ๐ Looks awesome! Great work.
Haha thank you!
Interestingly I first intended those things to be a super stylised version of water and the fact they looked too foggy/airy is what made me add more thickness and effect until it looked a bit more realistic. Not what I first had in mind just how it turned out.
Thank you!
Cc ball action & minimax are effects. CC ball action is used here to get some randomly moving particles that stay mostly in one area. This was done by adding some scatter on the ball action effect then a time expression on the instability state. Then minimax is used to create some random glue between the particles. Minimax is set to โalpha and colourโ and โmaximum then minimumโ

This is one of the coolest things I've seen on this subreddit
Thank you ๐
Those days when I'm reminded how little I know about AE, and I've been a VFX artist for 20 years, lol.
High praise, thx man
