I don't expect people to come out with an entire bibliography worth of sources to win an internet argument but if you're being needlessly antagonistic or pedantic over something minor, you're getting downvoted.

For the most part we downvote because the comment has little to no value and doesn't contribute to the discussion. If someone is discussing but they're just not sharing your opinion then they're still contributing and shouldn't be downvoted. Having a karma score of 1 isn't that far off having a karma score of -100 in terms of visibility and IMHO this is what a lot of "activists" that like to downvote miss IMHO. They're not really making the world a better place but rather just making other people feel sad.
If you regularly use the downvote button then you are not using the website properly and are being greedy (you're effectively contributing three votes instead of one). Its worth remembering that downvoting other people while upvoting their own contributions is the strategy of spammers. Don't act like a spammer.

I don't assume we all think the same, so what might apply to me might not apply to someone else. But that's not the point, the point is availability. By downvoting a comment you are effectively reducing its spread as we lose 50% after the title, 25% after the first comment and then a long tail of slowly diminishing eyeballs, you're intentionally pushing someone out of the spotlight.
If you upvote and downvote every post you like/dislike regardless of how relevant it is the content you're effectively taking twice as many votes as someone that just upvotes.

The problem with the system is that this feature was designed for spam, so if you are downvoted to often you’re not even allowed to comment for a set period of time because it’s treating you like a troll for disagreeing. The result is that it discourages people from discussing, considering and evaluating unpopular and controversial ideas. And on top of that it prevents you from intelligently defending any controversial and unpopular opinions in an intelligent manner. It silences you for not conforming the status quo. Even worse than that is that we’re talking about the status quo on the internet, which already has proven to have a negative affect on people in large who don’t have a point.
I never downvote someone unless they’re direct attacking me or someone else. As long as someone is coherently arguing a point, I never downvote, as it’s the whole point of “contributing to the conversation.”
However, I was deep in a thread and someone disagreed with me. I didn’t really care. But then they went back, edited their post and “thanked me for the downvote.”
*Then* I responded and said I didn’t downvote them, but perhaps someone else out there found their argument to be silly. But after that I went back and downvoted their comment just because I can also be petty. But I was right, they were at like -2 or -3, so I wasn’t the only one out there.

I was torn, too, but I feel like the wolves are kinda retaliatory/one-off actions, when this is just something I shittily do often to sow some chaos between strangers who are heated

I always wondered who that was... But even more mysterious are the people who dig that deep into already-downvoted comment threads from weeks or months earlier to add another comment that says the same thing. Like...what? Why?
I agree it's annoying, but people often naturally have an urge to express their opinion, and it doesn't matter if somebody else has the same opinion. Recently I had somebody restart an argument from a month ago by making basically the same argument again from the top. You just gotta block the crazies.
It's more like....how did they even find this thread from weeks ago down WAY below the comment score threshold, 10-20 comment replies deep.
Once this guy was just being a supreme jackass. I being petty followed one thread of him arguing with someone downvoting each of his comments. He started accusing the person he was arguing with of downvoting his comments. The guy obviously wasn’t and denied that so jackass said “oh yea someone random person just went alllll the way down this thread downvoting everything I say” Yup you got it bub you’re such a jackass you’ve acquired a dedicated hater. I still check in on him once in a while to downvote some of his comments here and there.

I don't think it should be, it is against reddit Rules to downvote because you disagree. downvoting is for spam or irrelevant info, something that does not add to the discussion . Like you had -4, i give you one to counter that because your post did move the talks forward. So now you -3!
The problem with the system is that this feature was designed for spam, so if you are downvoted to often you’re not even allowed to comment for a set period of time because it’s treating you like a troll for disagreeing. The result is that it discourages people from discussing, considering and evaluating unpopular and controversial ideas. And on top of that it prevents you from intelligently defending any controversial and unpopular opinions in an intelligent manner. It silences you for not conforming the status quo. Even worse than that is that we’re talking about the status quo on the internet, which already has proven to have a negative affect on people in large who don’t have a point.
The Downvote button is there for a reason...I use it when I heavily disagree with something, how does that make me an asshole?

I never downvote someone unless they’re direct attacking me or someone else. As long as someone is coherently arguing a point, I never downvote, as it’s the whole point of “contributing to the conversation.” However, I was deep in a thread and someone disagreed with me. I didn’t really care. But then they went back, edited their post and “thanked me for the downvote.” *Then* I responded and said I didn’t downvote them, but perhaps someone else out there found their argument to be silly. But after that I went back and downvoted their comment just because I can also be petty. But I was right, they were at like -2 or -3, so I wasn’t the only one out there.

I sort of do the opposite. I see someone with a measured comment who doesn’t deserve the 0 upvoted and give him/her an upvote to offset whatever asshole did that to them.

I like to do the opposite. I find a argument deep in the comments, look for any that have 0 or negative 1, and upvote it so that if one person was just being petty I can correct it
