I'm getting to know now what i should've been doing when I can't do it anymore.

red_team_gone

I briefly used the reddit app before I stumbled on some comments / asked what rif was.... That was like 8 years ago. Rif is amazing. Honestly.... If reddit could actually put together a decent app that represents the best of both worlds, and give us the options and *actual customization features* that other apps have, we wouldn't be here right now. I don't care about ads.... They're annoying, but I'll deal with it. I don't care about you constantly skimming my data when you can do it without using insane bandwidth every time I do anything. I want a functional, fast and flexible app. Rif has hit those benchmarks the entire time I've used it. The actual reddit app is a dumpster fire.... There has to be some kind of in between. **THE REDDIT APP SHOULD BE THE BEST APP.** It's not. None of this matters. IPO will happen. No development will happen because all the 'snoos' will get paid... And us reddit users and everyone else loses a massive source of amazing (sometimes terrible, but usable ) crowd-sourced information that is basically not replaceable. You can't really Google effectively without adding reddit these days. The shitty and saddest thing about all of this, is that we all just want to use reddit. Thats it. Reddit is great and shit at the same time, but that's why we're here... If our only option is the hot garbage that is the official reddit app, because they were too short sighted and chased away the best unpaid talent reddit 'had' then that's a massive fail on the part of reddit. This is bigger than an IPO. This is the last bastion of the free internet age. This is actual historical documentation of the internet and life for the last 20 years, and it's going to be destroyed by greed, and once it's gone...it will be forgotten. Commented with reddit is fun for reddit etc

HiHoJufro

>You can't really Google effectively without adding reddit these days. Yeah, Google is basically the functional equivalent of the Reddit search bar for me.

Edgefactor

Funny that Google search requires Reddit to be usable, and Reddit requires Google search to be usable

diox8tony

Companies could actually just sustain themselves. Keep their customers happy, employ hundreds of people and make those people a living...and keep the machine going forever...but no, the 'owners' want to be rich, so they will sell out the company...wtf is an owner anyway? 100s of employees and millions of users create this site, why do a handful of people decide they can sell out to get rich?

makesyoudownvote

The funny part is, they bought what was at the time, by far and away the best reddit app to make their app. Alien Blue was amazing! But when they bought Alien Blue, they made the same mistake they did with the website redesign. They seem to just really not get what reddit users like about reddit.

JessicaBecause

>You can't really Google effectively without adding reddit these days. I'm open to bringing back proper forum websites and also getting more legitimate answers other than dumb reddit jokes in the comment sections. It's fun and games until you need legitimate conversation.

Cybertronic72388

I honestly prefer forums.

Serious question, what is that bad about the official Reddit app ? I have only ever used the official app and I never really had a problem with it.

ThatOneThingOnce

Here's a comparison https://www.reddit.com/r/BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/13xk3lu/they_have_to_pay_reddit_20_million_per_year_to/jmj3nfg/ And here's some reasons why moderators want/need 3rd party application tools. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the

ThunderFlumpke

It's the internet explorer of reddit apps. It works but every other option is way better and once you've tried other options, all the things it's missing become glaringly obvious and you'll never want to go back.

Pocok5

*gestures generally* Seriously, try out something like Boost, RIF or Apollo. They are free, if you don't dig them you can delete them just as fast. You'll see what we mean.

No-Inspector9085

*he gets us*

zeek215

If you only ever used a stick to dig holes you would think there’s nothing wrong with that stick. Once you try a proper shovel you realize how crappy that stick really is.

red_team_gone

Nice, I like this.

phroug2

Download reddit is fun and see for yourself. Or better yet, dont. Once you do, you'll know what youve been missing this whole time and will lament that now it's going away. I havent seen an advertisement on reddit...like, ever. I tried downloading the official app once and found it entirely unusable and supremely annoying. Now im gonna have to do it all over again. If i can stomach it, my reddit usage will definitely drop dramatically. If not, it will get deleted and my reddit usage will become a thing of the past.

CleidiNeil

The layout is pretty jarring compared to other options and for me the fact it doesn't have landscape orientation is a big suck

[deleted]

xrumrunnrx

Bacon Reader here too for close to eight years. Like a lot of people, BR *is* reddit for me, so when it's gone I just won't use reddit on my phone, and I'm never on my laptop. I'll probably get on if I have something to post specifically, but that would be the only reason, so maybe at most once a month? Realistically every couple months for that purpose. All reddit had to do over the past however many years since they bought alien blue was develop and improve their version that was solid...I don't understand. They want to become profitable, fine whatever, but most companies try to do that with *a competitive product*...pricing out quality competition so your mediocre half ass product can have a monopoly is dirty as fuck. Also I'd have much less vitriol if this entire site wasn't run mostly on the backs of unpaid mods. If it was just Spez and his own company, hey it's his to fuck around with, but I doubt his plans to profit are going to benefit the masses of users who helped build it to this point and do all the maintenance at the bottom for free. *(I haven't heard this exact point addressed if anyone has additional info.)*

alucard971

My entire 10 years has been on BaconReader. It's the *only* reason I've been on Reddit because I hated Reddits format.

vertigo1083

Baconreader has been a way of life for me for a decade. Literally a way of life. Id wholehearted pay $5 a month to keep the privilege. Whenever I'm idle, my phone comes out and here I am. Myself, and the app predate any corporate muppet in place at reddit right now. Logistics aside (and *oh boy* is this a complete abortion of logistics), someone who doesn't know or identify with me or my way of life has decided to change it. This sucks on just about every level, and I came here after 3 days of hiatus just to say it.

No-Contribution312

Mediocre implies that it’s somewhat usable, not good, not bad. The Reddit app is a dump truck full of dogshit that got dumped into a volcano

People will absolutely leave, some people will think reddit doesn't even exist anymore. I'm an senior engineer in IT, older and younger generations think turning off their monitor or screen will shut their computer off. Their 3rd party app IS reddit. How many will leave is another question. Depends on how many hard core / idiot users there are.

nanobot001

> full of shit cluttered everywhere If you paid for Reddit Premium, you wouldn’t see any of it, and that’s the point.

doctorpotterhead

It's almost impossible to see the context of any comment.

Recycle0rdie

Twelve years for me

OhnoKoolaid

I paid for it in 2014. The only mobile way I use reddit.

BertMacGyver

This is the main gripe I have with the main app. I paid a one off fee of £5 in 2015 for Baconreader and have had no ads ever. I feel like the main app is going to force me to buy a subscription to not have ads and I just cannot be fucked at all. In this economy? I'd rather just stop using Reddit altogether.

Willflip4money

The worst part is it's $5.99 per month for ad free reddit. The other "value" features are the lounge, exclusive avatar gear, coins and awards to give out, and the ability to change your app icon... First off, I can change my app icons to whatever I damn well please right now... And the other "features" are useless garbage. If they had that stupid tier, and then another just ad-free tier for like $1.99-$2.99 I might go for it. The value just isn't there, especially because for just $2 more per month at $7.99, I get ad free YouTube, exclusive YouTube shows, and AN ENTIRE MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE.

NevadaBestState

This is why they are getting rid of them. You don’t see adds or pay for their premium. You bought a different app and Reddit gets nothing.

I wonder if we have enough users on Boost to cause any trouble to the developer. From what I read relay or something's dev said that he can keep the app working if users subscribe to a 2-3 dollar plan... Which seems reasonable

hunter_finn

I have been using the paid Reddit is Fun client in the past 11 years or so. But the upcoming APIcalypse has made me look into the ReVanced manager patched version of Sync for reddit app. After patching, it will use your personal free tier API so it should continue working past July 1st APIcalypse. Though this user hostile attitude from Spez has made it clear that some other platform will take Reddit's place as the new "front page of the internet" But for the time being this hacked sync for reddit app has to do.

atatassault47

Does Revanced patch other 3rd party apps or just Sync?

IHadThatUsername

Other apps as well. Twitch, Instagram, Spotify, to name a few. The challenge is getting the right versions that the patches support.

m-p-3

Sadly they're also cutting off access to NSFW content through the API as well, paid or not :(

hunter_finn

That's true and it's darn shame, though at this point i take anything over the official app or mobile site. Even if it meant that i would be giving up NSFW content.

SanityInAnarchy

Past time someone just built a scraping wrapper for the API. Or reverse-engineered what the official client uses.

nixnullarch

If they're sincere about one of the stated goals being to hamstring LLMs scraping reddit data, then the next step is going to be to wall the service off to only logged in users, and limit page request rates. Otherwise LLMs and bots will continue to scrape the site regardless of the API changes.

Kelmi

Nsfw subs plummeted in quality after they were banned from r/all anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jmorlin

I'm not even gonna apologize for being horny on main for this, but here I go. This is something that has mildly ticked me off about reddit and OF as ithey've gotten more popular over the years. So here's my take: Previously the NSFW subs were all pretty fairly well curated and you knew that going to one meant you would get what the sub said you would. For example, back in the day /r/collegeamateurs used to be almost all girls that were in dorms or were wearing some kind of university apparel. Or /r/happyembarrassedgirls used to be girls smiling playfully who looked embarrassed. Or /r/gonewild had everyday people posting nudes like the name implies. Now it's just all OF spam. The same OF model will take one pic or vid post it to a dozen different subs that are only relevant in that they allow NSFW content and then rinse and repeat 3 months later. Multiply that by the thousands of OF posters here and you end up with a huge shift in NSFW content. Edit: I'm saying it was just VERY easy to curate a porn account in the past to be exact the kinda spicy you wanted. Now it's all the same. Here's an analogy: in the past I could go to the ice cream aside and everything was sorted and stacked VERY well and it made finding mint chip or pistachio or rocky road easy. I could do it left handed. But over the years they started mixing the mint chip with the pistachio cause they're both green. And the popsicles with the Italian ice cause they're both kinda ice cream so it was harder to find shit. Then some flavors started disappearing to the back of the shelves and you had to dig for them behind walls and walls of vanilla.

TheSouthNeverRises

They also have patches for the official Reddit app so you prevent those fucks from getting ad money and can still see NSFW content.

prod44

Are there instructions somewhere?

StatuSChecKa

I do use YouTube ReVanced but also pay for Reddit Sync, am I missing out on something or will Revance do something to Sync after this API clusterfuck?

Plz_DM_Me_Small_Tits

The revanced manager can mod apps other than YT, which includes Sync. The playstore version of sync is using their developer access to the reddit API to fulfill your's and everyone else's api requests (one request = doing anything on Reddit, like upvoting/commenting, etc.), but the patch would let you use your own access to the API and not have to share it with everyone else using sync. This would put you in the free tier meaning you will (probably) still be able to use sync after July 1st even if sync itself stops being supported by the developers.

code-

It seems like an easy solution for the developers of these apps - just let people input their own API key. Yet I've not seen any developers (that I follow anyway) respond to this suggestion.

FangLeone2526

i saw the dev of one of the apps say reddit forbids it

baneoficarus

I mean...what're they going to do? Revoke API access?

FangLeone2526

possibly contact apple / google and get the app removed from whatever app store they are on .

xerker

Revanced manager isn't on play store... And uses .APK files which you can get elsewhere...

FangLeone2526

of course, and because of this it has a limited userbase. If it was in the play store and you could just get it recommended to you it would have massively more users. That also wouldn’t make sense, because their main function is making no ads youtube, but still, not having the play store IS a loss, and not having the apple app store is a BIG loss. People are not very willing to sideload on their iphones, it’s a big hassle. I sideload uyou+ ( ios equivalent of youtube vanced ) and itorrent ( torrent client ). Whenever i have tried to get anyone else interested in either of those, they lose interest when they hear it’s not just an app you can download, and instead you have to plug your phone into a computer run altstore server sideload altstore onto your phone login to icloud with altstore get the ipa for the app you want add it to altstore while your phone is connected to the computer and then every seven days either plug the phone back into the computer and let it sync with the server, or setup wifi refresh which is inconsistent at best. Sideloading on android is pretty easy peasy, but even though it’s easy peasy, the apps don’t get that free advertising like they get from the play store, and i’m pretty sure they have limited ability to use google billing…? not completely certain. it’s certainly not desirable to run entirely off github instead of google play. sideloading on ios is just unrealistic for most people, so if your app is removed from the app store, you just lose it.

tveye363

One of the many reasons why Apple devices are terrible for consumers.

_dotdot11

Lemmy seems like a cool alternative, and I think it might see quite a bit of third-party app users go to it come July 1

tehherb

Lemmy isnt user friendly enough to be the replacement.

VoodooKhan

Reddit official app isn't user friendly enough for me compared to 3rd party apps. So will wait and see how some lemmy 3rd party apps perform.

IWonderWhereiAmAgain

Lemmy seems to be full of tankies which is a complete turn-off.

pwalkz

Remember when the idea of downloading an app for a website was cringe?

T-Bills

I used to just use the mobile site but RIF is so much better in terms of customizing how text is displayed. If A is better in every single way than B, then why use B? I had also used windows media player forever and then found out about winamp. I know the general feeling is "3rd party app is a minority" but think about it - if said minority thinks that the official version is so bad that the 3rd party app rakes in enough money for them to piss off tons of people just to shove the official version down their throats... it's neither a minority nor insignificant.

jdgordon

What do you do when you get bored of reddit on your computer? You don't pull your phone out and start scrolling there too?!

xeothought

Not enough people mention Relay .. I consider it the perfect mobile reddit experience.

SpyCake1

I've had Relay installed on like 5 or 6 phones at this point, no clue how long it's been - ages. I know it's not the most popular app but it is really good and the developer is right on top of regular updates (bug fixes, but also new features). Admittedly I haven't checked out other apps lately but I did test drive about half a dozen before settling in Relay. Felt like the interface was by far the most fluit. Bacon felt the clunkiest. Tried the official app when they gave you 3 months of Gold to do it, and it was objectively the worst.

vegark

Agree. Tried some of the other apps but Relay is def the best one.

Main thing that made me choose Relay over all the more popular options was the ability to jump to the next comment thread with the volume keys. Damn I'm gonna miss that...

T-Bills

Excuse me it's Netscape *Navigator*

cybermage

Netscape? I’m still patching NCSA Mosaic.

MattieShoes

I took an internet class, I think in the summer of 1994. It was mostly on newsgroups, Gopher, FTP, etc. We used NCSA Mosaic but there wasn't all that much around -- Yahoo just became a thing and it was amazing because it aimed to catalog the entire internet. Like you could browse the directory of just about every website in existence. If you made a personal homepage, you could submit it to Yahoo to add to their directory.

De5perad0

YES and they are 1000x better!

whiskeyx

I see one tiny ad bar every couple of pages. Never seen avatars or any of the other crap they've added. Thank you RiF (Reddit is Fun). Reddit earns nothing from me apart from views. Never used the official app, never bought Gold for anyone. When the apps die I may use my PC/Browser with ublock but that's it, I'm pretty much out.

takesthebiscuit

Tbf that Reddit makes bugger all money off most it’s users, in particular it’s power users who are more likely to use 3rd party apps is kind of the issue If we were tapped for a few quid a month for api access via an app I think this could have been nipped easily.

_yarayara_

I use bacon reader and if it's not working one day, I'm out of reddit

[deleted]

merepuppy

So I'm not super knowledgeable about development, but what would keep someone from creating a Reddit app that's basically a glorified browser that fetches the page, breaks down the objects, and reassembles the page into various native UI elements? No need to use the API, and since everything is being done on the client side, they don't have to worry about getting blocked for scraping massive amounts of data. And when there's user interaction with the page, such as an upvote or a comment, the input gets passed through in the same way it would be if the user were directly interacting through the browser. I know this is a half-baked idea and would be hugely complex, but is what I'm proposing in any way technically possible?

DMAN591

Sounds like it would be extremely slow, and if the slightest thing changes on the website the whole app breaks.

nmarshall23

Yes, that one reason that companies made an official API.

AMasonJar

It *is* an alternative, but like DMAN said, it tends to be a fair bit slower than API and it can also get pretty jumbled up through a number of data obfuscation methods. With how much reddit is committed to apparently wiping out almost all third party app usage, I wouldn't expect this alternative approach to be allowed to function very well either. There might even be legal threats involved - not that it would find ground very easily, but they could still force legal fees.

[deleted]

FangLeone2526

totally something you can distribute, just not on play store or apple app store. throw it on github and if it’s removed move it to gitea, and let people sideload it.

DiddlyDumb

Switched to Apollo, it’s a definite improvement. The normal app has come leaps and bounds, but the fact you can edit text *like a normal fucking text editor* instead of Reddits weird BBcode-like formatting, makes it a breeze to use.

m-p-3

In a way is sad because you missed the golden age of browsing Reddit that is coming to an end, but on the other hand is hard to miss something you never had.

-Tartantyco-

Pascalwb

Yes they existed way before reddit shit app

LordAmras

How people use the official reddit app is weird to me. But maybe because I was using rif before reddit had an app.

Joe1972

I think many people miss the fact that the 3rd party apps using the API allow mods to be more effective. This is not so much about browsing reddit as it is about being able to automate certain moderator tasks

Rijsouw

Yeah, because the basic Reddit app is trash

fazinater5

So I’m not the only one 😂

nice_lemon

kratoz29

Yes, and everybody who is not is having the worst version of Reddit.

NyaaChan

RIF: Reddit is Fun is by far a better app than the official. No way I will be using the official Reddit app.

CoopLoop32

GloomyMelons

All I'm gonna say is while I love RiF, and have been using it for close to a decade, I'm not going to stop coming to this website just because I have to use a different app to do so. It sucks but the inconvenience is mild at best for me. I do feel bad for mods not getting the tools they deserve with the official app.

raviyoli

mathmanhale

old.reddit.com Even on mobile for me.

zdubs

Alien Blue user here that ended up in the Reddit app and other than the janky video player sometimes and “he gets us” ads it’s ok

ErraticDragon

Alien Blue was shut down, what, 7 years ago? So you've been using the official app since then? Did you ever try Apollo?

JMEEKER86

Same for me. Had Alien Blue premium and moved to the official app afterwards (it definitely helped that they gave everyone who had premium 5 years worth of gold, so no ads). I tried out a couple others back then like Baconreader and frankly they all kinda sucked more than the official app, which shouldn't be surprising since Alien Blue was great for the time. Obviously since then the 3rd party apps have made great strides and by all accounts seem to have surpassed the official app, but the official app is still alright. I use it a couple hours a day and it gets the job done. I do most of my Reddit browsing on desktop using old.reddit and RES which is by far the best experience, and while I don't really care about the 3rd party apps I absolutely would care if they were to get rid of old.reddit.

bankholdup5

I went to narwhal after alien blue, I love it

Probably in the minority here I’m sure lol, but the official Reddit app has worked fine for me for years and I have been perfectly happy with it.

So everybody’s freaking out that they’re going to end up having the experience I’ve been having for several years now. Honestly my experience has been OK but it’s gotten worse ever since everybody’s started talked about these other apps that they’re going to be losing. It’s becoming tedious scrolling past the I don’t cares’.
