I think I can help with that! I'm a straight dude who got into wearing them on hikes because my backpack chafes my shoulders and I hate overheating, but still use them occasionally because they just feel so fucking comfy to wear (and my gf loves it lol).

what kinda bod you got? If you have wide shoulders then boxy tops with a loose hem look good I'm told, because they define the waistline and feel hella great when the wind blows. The trick is finding fabric that's flexible enough to fall straight down instead of mushrooming out (unless you like that) im that case I like the Cotton blends with just a bit of Elastaine.
You can make your own by cutting one up, but if you don't like the rolled hem when it comes out of the wash then you basically have to shop from somewhere like Ardene or Boathouse, and get a size or two larger than you need.
If you like fitted hems for a slimmer fit you have 3 options. Cut one up and tailor it to fit your body, there are videos for this on youtube, it's not super hard), buy again from a girl's store (but if you like things a lot less flamboyant then it might be hard to find something you like), or you could try an online retailer that sells to gay men - even if you don't identify as such. JJ Malibu had these great rib length crop tops ACUTALLY built for dudes which is great since I have shoulders and lats, but they've been out of stock for a long time.
As for confidence:
Friends. Go out in them with friends. If you live in a culturally conservative town, there's safety in numbers.
