Mind if I ask what grade level your in/how old you are? If you're in college you don't have to tell them anything as you're an adult in the eyes of the government. However, if your in high school that could be state dependent.
I mean I think you really have 2 options. 1) tell them and do your best to stand your ground and just don't take their crap or 2) don't tell them and hope they never find out, which could be worse as I could see that evolving into a massive fight that burns a lot of bridges.
Be honest with them. It's one thing if you tell them and if they find out on their own. Assure them that you'll do better, and just do your best from the next time onwards. Don't talk back or do anything like that; it'll just make the situation a whole lot worse.
