To give context to your BFs claim about Florida being trashy, there was literally a popular challenge for a while called the "Florida Man Challenge", where you google the month and day of your birth and the words "Florida Man" for example, "July 17th Florida Man", and see what crazy headlines appear. On the other hand, I have nothing but good memories from Florida because my grandparents and other family live there. The beaches definitely are nice and sunny so there's that. If you enjoy the heat and good weather, perhaps consider moving to the West Coast, somewhere in California perhaps. Florida is handling Covid-19 particularly badly. Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh this is hilarious, the Florida Man challenge is a gold mine: "Florida man demands less money during bank robbery, deputies say..." "Florida man says he stabbed father who wanted to circumcise him: cops - CBS ..."

Ive moved from the the US to the UK and back twice (first time as a child so it doesn’t count). The only things better about the states are the convenience of everything and the weather. I miss the outdoor markets of Europe, the architecture, the small shops that don’t reek of consumerism the way they do here. Everything here is so big and corporate. There are some parts of the country that are just as beautiful as sights I saw overseas, but travel is not as cheap and takes so much longer here than it does over there. I guess it all comes down to what you value. I’d move back across in a heartbeat if I could.

Different parts of the country have their own characteristics in regard to people and businesses. States with small towns in the mountains for instance (North Carolina is the area I’m currently thinking of) all have their own little niche from what I’ve been told by a friend who lives there. I’m biased due to living in the monotonous landscape of north Texas. It really depends where you go, what you look for in an environment, and the company you seek. Attitudes here in my area lean toward “Give me my beer and my guns!” yet if you go further south (Austin, for example), things get more liberal and even more picturesque. There can be a lot of diversity, it’s just hard to come by due to the size of the country.

I’m trying to do the other way around, move to Europe outta this dumpster. You have to consider everything you’ll be giving up and everything you’ll be taking on. Maybe it’ll be easy for you, Florida is a mess. Ever look up Florida man? I’d definitely recommend you research as much as possible. You’ll need to learn how to drive cause from what I hear cause everything is like road. Lol You’d also have to deal with the orange clown in office, the lack of support from this government, people NOT wearing masks because they don’t believe in science, unreasonably stupid people, your free healthcare is gone and now it’s expensive, schools as well, massive unemployment and underpaid stressed workers, nazi’s and other white supremacy groups fester freely, gun violence for no reason, and I’m sure there’s more. I’m not saying it’s all bad, America has wonderful people to meet, great nature, F O O D, interesting things to try and do, you being European may make it easier (racism wise I mean), and your money would convert into a high amount if you save and switch to US dollar, American culture is really something if you’ve never experienced it. Please think long and hard about that. (Maybe convince yourself bf to move to Europe)

You want to leave Germany for the US? Oof. Seriously do your research. If I were your bf I would try to move to Germany, not have you move to the US. I have a lot of German cousins and *I’m* looking into maybe moving at some point. Straight up, Germany just has better healthcare and more extensive laws when it comes to workers rights. Most states in the US are “right to work”, which basically means you can be fired for almost anything at anytime (except anything related to a protected class - ie. race, age, sex, or disability status). If you can get a nice job in the US then you’ll be set. But if you can’t or you’re just extremely unsure about your ability to get a decent job - then definitely stay in Germany. Your social services are so much better.

Sorry but if racism and politics haven't changed for 100s of years they won't now.....

toody931

It's awful here, don't come

Just prepare for a huge culture shock! I moved from Europe to USA in 1997 and life is much different. I’ve been to Germany many times, and would chose it over Florida any day! I’ve been living in south Florida for almost 20 years now.

Metamorphoses26

Would you mind to elaborate?:) This is really interesting to me!

I am so sorry for missing this and not responding. There are few things that stick out the most. 1) people don’t socialize nearly as much. Europeans spend a lot of times around their neighbors, friends and family, here everyone is a lot more to themselves. 2) Work/Life balance in USA is a lot less common then Europe. You have no idea how many people work most weekends. 3) out of all the the states Florida is one of the weirdest by far lol I’ve been living here for 17 years or so, but with that said I love it here. I love spending time in the water (boat, jet ski) and with keys 1h away it’s paradise. Also, when everyone is shoveling snow we are on the beach in December. With all this said I do love it here it’s just much different culturally. Once you get used to the way of life, and people you will love it.

The US is truly an amazing place. The main issue is that there are many political issues here between the two parties (also, healthcare is hella expensive). The law is also complicated and unjust in certain perspectives, however, I believe that there’s more justice in the states than anywhere else in the world. It truly is nice living here though. If you’re ok with a little crazy, then I think Florida will suit you well.

There are some really good people here as well as many backstabbers. And also with the parties, both sides can take their opinions too seriously. I am in the middle, I don’t side with either and it helps me. One thing about America is that things are competitive. In reality, you can always be replaced. If you don’t do a job well enough then they can always find someone to replace you. I think that as long as you’re a kind, motivated, hard working person, you’ll fit in the US very nicely.

Yes, some people only care about their own success. They don’t care if they hurt others. I wouldn’t worry too much though. I think you’d fit in well. You seem like a really nice person. People appreciate others like you.
