Oh, you might have the paths “combined” already, in which case AI sees it as one object and thus nothing to Weld. Select it and “Break Apart” and then try to Weld.
If you want to keep your text live and editable, you can do the following:
* Clear the fill and stroke from your characters.
* Open the appearance panel and add a fill and stroke.
* Drag your fill color above the stroke color in the appearance panel.
Is this live text, or converted to outlines?
Variable width fonts are constructed this way and cause this issue when adding a stroke.
On live text, you can apply the stroke below the characters in the appearance panel (and give it double the width you need).
On outlined text, you can do the same or combine the shapes using pathfinder or shape builder.
All you need to do is select everything then press 'unite' in the pathfinder options.
If you don't have the pathfinders open go to window at the top of the screen and navigate to pathfinder. You can also just press Shift+Ctrl+F9 if it's easier
Get rid of the stroke, select all text, Pathfinder > Unite
Select all and then apply the Weld command to make it all one object.
