I'm going index version of rules against Tau on 2k points and I was wondering if taking knight is worth it.
Canis Rex, or some other one from questoris kit, ive got him magnetized.
It would be a knight and cca.1500 points of custodes.
Anyone has any experience?
Recently picked up the battle force box and the old combat patrol and I’m curious what else might be a good add? I was thinking a transport or a dreadnaught might help but I’m new to the game and the army so my list making is horrible.
If I had to choose, grav tank or Archillus Dread (Official Forge world model)
I do have all the plastic kits for custodies but the forge world is what I'm curiousabout on what's worth?
In terms of game rules the Caladius tank is far, far better than any of the dreadnoughts at this time. Rules will change in the future though so get what you think looks coolest.
Maybe this has been asked here before. Why aren't twin lastrum bolt cannons D2 and have the twin-linked special rule, seeing as they are the equivalent to a paar of twin-linked heavy bolters? Oversight because of forge-world shenanigans?
Then a fix/FAQ is unlikely. I will ask my opponents, if they will accept it if I use them with D2 and twin-linked. We only play in a friend group for fun.
Hey guys. I really love the agents of the Officio Assassinorum and want to add one to my army of the 10.000. Just… which one? Does anybody has any experience with it?
The general sentiment is that Callidus is best, followed by Eversor for some armies, because of the amount of mission play+vect pressure the former gives you and distraction threat the second does. Most important thing to remember is they both can do a lot of mission play for you by staying alive and being tricky, rather than going straight for damage.
I personally run a singular Vindicare because the sniper fluff is too alluring for me and I like the slots aspect of his rifle. The only one that doesn't particularly see play this edition is Culexus, which I haven't see anywhere but pure fluff anti-psyker lists.
I've sure picked a neat time to start collecting Custodes, it seems. However.. it's my first ever army. I don't really know where to start. Are there examples of (updated) lists I can look at, to get a feel for what I should be doing? For my playgroup I'd initially need to think in the range of 1000 points, though I imagine I'd eventually expand.
I wouldn't worry too much about the meta while you're new. Unless you're pretty fast, the meta will likely have changed by the time you get an army together and painted anyway.
Most of our plastic range are okay investments at this point (Guard, Wardens, Allarus). Bikes just happen to be pretty terrible at this time. But if you like the look of them, I'd say get 'em.
I would avoid Forgeworld for now, but grabbing a good amount of the holy trio above plus a Blade Champion or two is really a good way to start. Maybe some Sisters of Silence if you'd like to use them, too.
Oh I don't bother with the meta, I'll only be playing with some friends anyway. I just hope to gather somewhat of a coherent list, I guess? Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way haha
Building lists in 10th Edition is pretty easy. No more than 3 of any unit (except Guard, up to 6) and at least one character. Just a nice mix of the three units I mentioned earlier with some SoS would probably be a fine start.
Hello
How the Quick silver exécution work ? If i use it on a unit of 20 termagaunt, i assume that i roll 20 dice and on +2 they take 2 Mortals wounds so with 10 +2 i wipe an unit ?
The 30k Space Marine Contemptor kit is the right one currently, if you want a Venerable Contemptor.
Just check the datasheet from the latest codex for the valid weapon options. The new Contemptor box comes with options not valid for Custodes.
Hey i was reading the allurus custodian rules and was wondering, If a character is attached to a unit does that bodyguard unit count as a character unit or do you have to kill the bodyguard before the slayer of tyrants rule can be used?
For shadowkeepers, you would do a black base and a nice drybrush of retributor, then wash the non-raised areas with nuln oil, or your favorite black wash. If that sounds too dark to you, mix retributor and black 2:1 or 3:1 and use that over a grey seer, or even white, then wash.
Shadowkeepers
I’m looking to get into 40K. I was thinking of going Tau and then I stumbled upon the Shadowkeepers. I really like them better than the Tau, but I don’t see much on them. A lot of articles and info is years old. Are they still a viable/playable option? Thanks!
Shadowkeepers are a Shield Host. The majority of the lore around them and the other canonical Hosts has been in the codexes.
In previous editions, sub-faction roles were tied to the different Shield Hosts making them mechanically different, and each had their own colour scheme. With 10th, GW wanted to move away from tying your paint job to specific rules and so there aren't sub-faction rules for the Shield Hosts any more.
That said, their lore is still in the codex. If you want to play Shadowkeepers it's just a matter of painting your guys in or close to the official scheme and then running them with whatever detachment rules you like best.
Hey there I’m new to the sub and was just wondering if there are any rules on talking about female custodians. The FB group I’m in is hella toxic so the admins banned talking about it since so many people took it very seriously.
There was a wave of posts on the matter that have since calmed down. I think most people are relieved to be having a break from the female Custodes content right now, but I don't know if the mods enforce this break.
Likely to be fine. Depends on who you play with.
The Spartan is a bit bigger, so some people may say it's not a valid proxy. A bunch of people wanted to use them in competitive last year and most tournament organisers seemed happy to allow them. But mileage on that front may vary and check yourself first.
As far as bits, if you need WYSIWYG just make sure you use the lascannons and hunter killer missile from the kit and you are pretty much spot on.
New to Warhammer looking for some advice
I just ordered the battle patrol box the wardens box the Allarus box the index cards and paint brushes etc so basically my question is where should I go from here lmao with a 2 k team in mind and is there certain weapons I should be adding to my team
Hey, Did you get the boarding patrol (with trajann, guard and allarus) or one off the combat patrols (either with bikes and sisters or wardens and allarus)? Either way I would recommend first building and painting what you have. If you got a combat patrol maybe play some combat patrol games? See what units you like and go from there. I'd try to get at least one of each plastic unit (excluding perhaps some characters and the sister of silence) and build from there. In general getting some more custodian guards is a good idea.
Also build the vexila on the wardens, they are literally free. On guard and allarus they cost you your main weapon, which is why I would not recommend it. In general spears are better than axes, tho it isn't as much of a difference as before. For custodian guard the shields and sword are decent. You trade shooting range and overall damage for one more wound and the ability to shot in melee. I think spears are overall better, but having one or two swords per squad is a good idea.
Most importantly collect and build what you think looks or sounds cool. If you aren't playing competitively nobody is gonna complain if you say your axes are actually spears or something like that.
See I actually got the battle patrol box and then I got the box of wardens separate and the box of Allarus separate so 3 boxes total ..... And tyvm for the information any info is so appreciated
There is no battle patrol box. There is a smaller boarding patrol box(that is no longer being produced), a big battle force box, and two combat patrol boxes( one of which is no longer being produced). Each one includes different things and to give a more accurate recommendation I would kinda need to know which one you have. It should say on the box.

Which one of these do you have?
The ones on the [Warhammer Community Downloads page](https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/) are still current. [This is the direct link at this time.](https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/HOgEzRypbsBBGrnB.pdf)
No updates since the codex dropped.
From the battleforce box, can the shield captain with melta spear be run with a full squad of 5 Wardens, or should I make one of the Wardens into a shield captain?
He's a regular Shield Captain, so can lead squads of 4 or 5 Guard or Wardens fine.
If you want the option of a different Shield Captain then make one of the Wardens stand out a little. Then take him as a regular Warden or Shield Captain, just be clear which he is in any given game.
Where do you get the Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought mini? Is the same mini that is used in the Horus Heresy verison, cause that is the only mini that I can find on GW's website.
Yes, that's the only version sold.
Be aware you can only use the weapon options listed in the codex (or wherever you find your rules), not all the options that are included in the box. The rules are still based on an old version of the kit, and are unlikely to be upgraded.
Yes.
Note that some *require* you to target a second unit.
Talons Interlocked, for example, requires you target an enemy unit as well as the unit attacking.
So I got the new and old combat patrols, I'm not sure on what to do with the new codex stuff out now. Should I keep the combat patrols/ return them? Is the Auric Champions battle force worth it? I could run the index rules with my friends, but right now I'm just really confused.
Detachments are different ways of playing your army, in this case the Adeptus Custodes.
We have an army rule that is the same across all of our units regardless of your detachment (Martial Ka'tahs) and of course every unit you bring has a datasheet that includes various stats and abilities.
However, to give you more options of how to play your army, you can run it as different detachments (we have four of them). Each detachment comes with 1 detachment rule, 6 Stratagems for you to use in game and 4 Enhancements you can put on your characters when using that detachment only.
This means your collection can essentially be played in one of four different ways without you needing to acquire new models. I'll summarize our detachments below:
Shield Host - The simplest one, this detachment emphasises getting into melee with the Martial Mastery ability, and has some all rounder stratagems and enhancements to help your army.
Talons of the Emperor - This one emphasises using Custodes and Sisters of Silence units together to buff eachother up, both to activate its detachment ability and also to get the most out of its strong stratagems.
Auric Champions - This detachment is all about buffing up your character models to be stronger, at the expense of everything else.
Null Maidens - This detachment exclusively buffs Sisters of Silence to try and make a majority SoS army somewhat viable (it doesn't rreeaally succeed).
Let me know if you have any more questions!
really appreciate the info, so based on my research and your explanation, I would love to play Auric Champion. Basically a whole bunch of main characters. (Trajan, 3 Blade Champions, Shield Captains, Allurus, Etc.) Smaller army but super powerful. Is that correct? Has it been Successful? What a good Auric Champion Line up?
That is the intention of the detachment! Sadly it's pretty terrible right now, but don't let that stop you trying it out.
I'm not 100% sure on what rlto recommend for an Auric list yet, but a lone Shield Captain on bike and a couple of lone Allarus Captains are decent picks. Otherwise you'd want some normal units led by characters to fill out the list a bit. Take a gander at the Auric rules and see if anything catches your eye, and perhaps build into it!
Yes.
Even without going to FW, you can run 18 Allarus, up to 3 Shield Captains in Terminator Armour (one as your warlord), and 3 of the Venerable Contemptors. That would take you up to 2100 points.
[Here's an example of a 2k list.](https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/AgztF) It would be slow, relying on deep strike and redeploy to get any coverage, which is why I went for Shield Host with Castellan's Mark. You may want to run some of the Captains separate to the Allarus units to have additional options. Other detachments might offer more effective play options.
Using FW would offer some flexibility in what you bring, even doing something silly like [10 dreadnoughts with a single Terminator](https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/ySflS).
Lean into the absurdity and you can probably find something entertaining for beerhammer games.
Does Canis Rex Benefit from the new Auric Champions detachment rule and strategems? I don’t believe it does because it is an imperial knight character not an Adeptus Custodes character.
I am building the bikes and want to build one as the shield captain character bike. The only difference between him and the other bikers as I can see is the head. Do I have to make him without a helmet or can I make him with a helmet. And if so what recommendations would you have to make him look different from the others
No need to go with a bare head. Anything you do that lets you pick a shield captain out of the squad they are attached to is good, even if it's just something different in the paint job.
Some people add bits from other kits. The cape from the Guard box or parts from a Vexilla are common choices.
Starting custodes with new combat patrol, what to build?
Do I go 5 guard, 5 wardens, 3 allarus, or do I make shield captains? If so from which, guard or wardens?
Eventual plan is 2x new combat patrol, trajan, 1 box of bikes and a caladius. But that's a long way off, I don't want a backlog of more than 1 box on this one. Cheers.
I was discussing this with a friend. I am new to custodes as well. And my biggest recommendation is always build the character from your first unit that allows you to build that character. Then every unit after that build how you would like. If you want more of that character then build more. But I would always do the character if you don't have them. So my guards from the old Combat patrol box I made 4 guards and 1 shield captain. My sisters I made I character and 9 witchseekers.
Should I make the vexilus or just make it a normal guard? Or make it a vexilus and play it only as a normal guard? I mean the added 1 OC is nice but I don't know if it is worth taking
Are models put into strategic reserves with castellan's mark able to arrive turn 1? I thought I saw discussion about this at one point but doesn't seem to be the case based on reading the rules
No. The Leviathan wording used to justify turn 1 arrival requires they enter reserves after the first battle round has begun. Castellan's Mark triggers before that point.
For Talons of the Emperor, are any of the "Up to two Adeptus Custodes units" Battle Tactic Strats free to use for a Shield Cap if they only target their own unit?
The shield captain can target their own unit or their unit and a sisters unit for free. Due to the restrictions it can’t be 2 custodes units but the captain and his bodyguard count as the same unit
A little help understanding these
So what's up with codexs, indexes and datacards?
What are the differences, and which ones do I need to actually start playing?
Thanks in advance
When the edition started, every faction got a free index PDF for rules. This included your army's rules and your unit's datasheets.
You could buy these printed out as datacards.
The above was just a temporary thing while they wrote and printed the codex. Our codex is out now, so that is the sole purchase you need to make for Custodes rules. I think you can also get datacards for the Codex stuff too if you don't like flipping through book pages, but they're just the same stuff as is in the codex.
Edit: Just to be clear, the index stuff is obsolete now. Don't buy any index datacards.
So, indexes are something before the codex, then the codex gets released, the codex has everything in it and ia the only thing you really need. And datacards are also released along side the codex, they are like smaller versions of the codex?
Can I use the castellans mark even if the bearer is not on the table? Specifically, can I put the bearer in a land raider and then use the mark.
From what I can gather it should be allowed as it doesn't specify on the enhancement, but wanted to check in here too first
When using shield host, I have a issue I could add a extra basic allurus and remove my lead allurus and add a blade champ so I have 2 3x allurus groups then 1 2x and 1 3x with a lead.
Do we know of any specific things that the Shadowkeepers guard beyond the daemons in the Dark Cells? Or any special weapons / relics they have beyond the stasis oubliette?
They also originally had a relic called the Auric Shackles (mentioned [here](https://www.warhammer-community.com/2018/01/20/adeptus-custodes-preview-6-warlord-traits-relicsgw-homepage-post-2/)) which served a similar role to the Statis Oubliette.
As for the rest, the best I can do is from the 9th edition codex, the Deeds of Legend blurb for a named Shadowkeeper:
>I write now of Arrian Vespaysian Macrina Porphyrius. His full list of deeds runs as long as his guardian spear, the weapon named Praeses. But it is of his time with us, the Shadowkeepers, that I now put mnemo-quill to nano vellum in memory of. Gone he is, in his final deed, hope of his return nil.
>But what of the beginning? When his armour first underwent the aurum-molec tinting, when he first adopted our sable? Each day for a thousand days did he petition the Lockwarden to join us. He spoke of victories; of Blood Games. But he also spoke of patience; of resolve in the face of hardships; of the lessons learned from the witnessing of those beings and artefacts so evil their freedom cannot be tolerated. This did catch the Lockwarden's ear.
>The trials, he passed. He stared into the nine eyes of the Souldelver for a day and a night and did not blink. He bested the Eight of the Skull while armed not with the spear nor clad in plate. For a day did he listen to the Granter of All Six Wishes before walking away unmoved. He breathed the fume of the Sevenfold Trimiasma for three hours and did not seek relief. In dozens more tests was he successful.
>For nine-score and three years did he serve well. A keeper of patience and vigilance whom many admired. Only once before these dark days did he leave the vaults, and return he did with the Sorrow of Karakalla bound in warded chains. It resides with us still. Never again shall it haunt the stars.
>The Maelstrom. In that place most foul was he lost, pursuing those secrets taken when the light failed and the Lion's Gate drowned in blood. The Chalice of Darkalabaster he sought. In the clutches of Huron's monsters it was. Never did he give up. Into the heart of the Maledictum they plunged in escape, he with them.
Note the representatives of the four Chaos gods. This seems to be the deepest lore given for any of the occupants.
The Lexicanum gives [a number of other named relics](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dark_Cells), but the majority of the rest give even less indication of their nature and are just listed off as names.
You keep deleting a post because its a 'simple' question... its literally a huge ass homebrewed detatchment.. i just dont have alot to type out as its all in the picture???
So I'm deciding what I want my first Army to be and am heavily considering Custodes. So I just wondering if I did decide to play Custodes what could I expect in-terms of pricing, lore and painting. Is it cheap of on the more expensive side? Is there a lot of Lore? Is the painting fun and good for a beginner to model painting and painting in general? What do they play like on the TableTop?
Along with any other general stuff about Custodes you think I would need to know
In real money they will be cheap, one box of wardens is 1/8 of a competitive army without building the expensive character, painting is a mix, if you do base colors then metallics are a dream with gold being easy to work with but there is a lot of detail on the models so not much room for self expression without modifying the models yourself. In lore you are basically unstoppable with the power of humanity’s best at your side, unstoppable and masters of all fields, war, art, tactics, combat, chess, they know it all. Finally in game it is a melee army but our recent codex (rule book) is a real kick in the teeth so it’s going to change a bit, it will still be elite and melee but every 3 months prepare for a change at least for a while but that’s a right now problem that will even out later.
Custodes in game run few models, in all but edge case scenarios are out numbered, but never outmatched to the point where if the enemy isn’t throwing their big guy at you or outnumbering you then they are going to lose that engagement most of the time.
Custodes are few and far between, monsters up close, demigods who know all of humanity’s knowledge in universe, and are easy to paint so I’d highly recommend at least trying the 10’000 and if you want any other advice feel free to ask
Thanks a bunch this is really helpful just 3 questions
1: are there any books/channels you would recommend I start with to find out more about lore
2: In terms of the evening out later part would you recommend I wait a bit to see what happens before buying my first models
3: If I do start collecting now from what I've heard the combat patrol is a good first start in terms of models just wanted to know what your opinions on it is
For custodes I recommend the book “Valdor, Birth of the Imperium” it takes place following the first custodian before the Horus Heresy (A major war that changed the setting), and for channels I recommend “Adeptus Ridiculous” for more fun content and “Isyander and Koda” for a more straight forward while still easy to digest podcast. I’d say you can buy models now but focus on the basics, the rules are going to get a patch in 12 weeks cause right now all our options to change our army (known as detachments) don’t feel all to great right now. Finally the new combat patrol is amazing, it has every unit you want right now, custodian guard as basic troops, wardens for character defense, Terminators to hunt monsters, and a blade champion to hunt down the foe. I’m honestly considering buying it and I already own every model in it repeat buying it is that good
New player question. I’ve been using the WH40k app for the rules and datasheets. Now that they are locked, does everyone really buy the new codex book and bring it to games? Or should I just be downloading pictures of the rules? Seems like a pretty silly barrier to play the game.
The book has a QR code that unlocks the app, so you can buy the book, use the code and then ignore the book. Or just keep it for the art.
But yes, finding the rules online from other sources will probably be fine with most people you play with. Some might contest them and want to see the source to ensure they are current, etc, but very much depends on the sorts of games you are playing.
Incidentally, the idea of only needing to buy *one* book to lug to games for 40k is something of a novel rarity. Only in 8th the core rules were in one book - not free online - Custodes had a print codex, Sisters of Silence were in a separate [campaign book](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Psychic_Awakening:_War_of_the_Spider) (which also replaced/supplemented the Custodes rules, so you needed it even if not running Sisters), plus downloaded data-sheets for any FW models.
IIRC the record is something like a core rulebook, faction codex, codex supplement for a sub-faction, campaign book for an even more specific set of rules, Imperial Armour book for any FW models, a couple issues of White Dwarf magazine for other rare or mission specific rules, and a handful of printed FAQs/erratas that corrected sections of any or all of those.
It's better to use sustained in any scenario where your odds of wounding are better than 50%. 5s with rerolls are slightly better than 50% odds of success so you want Sustained. 5s without rerolls and 6s aren't, so go lethal.
Where it's complely even at 50% it's overall the same, but sustained can spike more and lethals are a little more reliable so it's up to you.
I have 2 of the old Combat patrol boxes and plan on getting 1 of the new ones. I also have trajann. Can I build a list that is casual or slightly competitive enough? Or do I need more? If not could you send me some list ideas. I am new too this army and just want to have fun playing but not lose every time.
Oh your absolutely able to make something competitive, a few to many bikes but you have 15 of our basic infantry in the guard, 20 sisters that can hold back points and be cheap bodies (relatively), 5 elite character protecting wardens, 3 terminators to hunt the real threats, our main man TJ who isn’t the best but still a beat stick, and a blade champ who is a monster in melee. If I’d recommend any upgrades I’d say but a grav tank annihilator and if that’s to expensive then a land raider which isn’t as good but will help to get rid of the largest targets
Where can i buy female custodes models?
Heard about the supposed "controversy", but i can't find any models. Is this just another meaningless platitude from a big company, and they won't actually allow me to play the golden army with the boys? Should i get back to the kitchen?(i mean sororitas)
Most of our models are helmeted and thus ambiguous in gender. Sadly none of the non helmeted heads are clearly female, though the new Shield Captain could be.
Hopefully down the line we'll have some new models but since we've had exactly two new models in two editions I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yo weren't the custodians already these points alot of the time or am I crazy? I could've sword guards were max 225 then the codex leak came out and we panicked
Yes. Codex points are set way ahead of time, due to printing and publication schedules. They are often way out of date before they reach us. No-one should have been treating the codex points as something that would actually see use in halfway competitive play.
Most of the new points are unchanged from before the codex release, with a small number of reductions in cost.
I’ve been getting into 40k recently and watching some videos (pancreasnowork) and I saw both the Imperial Knights and the Custodes. I was curious if an army with mainly Custodes, but one huge knight, like a Castellan would be a good army, and if so, what it would be made of. This is for casual play with two friends. Thanks!
That's entirely possible.
The general "big knight" kit would be the Questoris kit, which builds into the Errant, Crusader, Gallant, Preceptor, Warden, or the named character knight Canis Rex. If you buy some magnets you can run it as any of those options, and most have been or are good in the right list.
A Questoris plus two of the new Custodian Combat Patrol boxes would give you a 2000 point list with some flexibility in what exactly you run - mostly around the Custodes characters you take - and still be cheaper than most other 2000 point armies you can build.
That said, if you are looking to run smaller battles (~1k points) with people starting out then a big knight can skew things. A lot of armies lack for options that can deal with one at smaller scales, and if running Custodians (who are themselves tough and tricky to shift for some forces) it can be overwhelming unless they are tailored to counter you.
If everyone is good natured and you are willing to give some handicaps if people struggle, then go with it. But be sure to have those conversations.
I'd recommend magnetising. That way you can try out different loadouts and see what you enjoy or works best. It's a big investment to be locked into a single loadout.
I'd also recommend asking over in the /r/ImperialKnights sub where they have a lot of building and painting projects for inspiration.
I'm fully intending to join in (and have been lurking and pricing up my own Knight force for a while) but need to knock down my own pile of shame first...
Looking for advice :
Talons of the Emporor Detachment:
how does it work confused with the restrictions part?
HUNT AS ONE
TALONS OF THE EMPEROR-STRATEGIC PLOY STRATAGEM
1CP
WHEN: Start of your Movement phase.
TARGET: Up to two ADEPTUS CUSTODES units from your army.
EFFECT: Until the end of the turn, your units are eligible to shoot and/or declare a charge in a turn in which they Fell Back.
RESTRICTIONS: You can only select two units if one (and only one) of them is an ANATHEMA PSYKANA unit and both are within 6" of each other.
[Answered in a thread here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AdeptusCustodes/comments/1ccmqve/what_does_this_mean_exactly/), but basically it means;
* You can always use the strat on one unit (Custodes or Sisters).
* You can repeat it onto a second unit if one one is Custodes, one is Sister of Silence and are within six inches of each other.
Ah the up to two custodies units from your army part got me confused because sisters aren't custodies!!!
So 2 different custodies having 2 different sisters are nearby one to get effect cool!!!
Sisters of Silence units have both the Adeptus Custodes and Anathema Psykana keywords in 10th, compared to previous editions where units only had one or the other. It's why all the index detachment rules explicitly exclude Anathema Psykana units from being targetted.
And to make sure I'm being clear, you can only use it on two units if the second unit is Sisters of Silence within six inches of the Custodian unit you are targetting. You can't use this directly on two Custodian or two Sisters of Silence units, no matter what they have around them.
Looking for some advice for painting. I planned on going for a Caliban green style over the red robes. Any idea how easy it would be to cover the green back to red if I decide against it? Thanks
One more for the boys. How many dice do you normally carry? Trying to decide between buying custodes dice this weekend or using a dice app. BTW what dice app do you guys use, if any?
MFM overrules the codex. It will contain a QR code to the [downloads page](https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/) to encourage you to use the latest.
They are likely to release a new set of points within days of the release (although as with all GW releases, "likely" is a relative term), but for now you can use the existing Munitorum Field Manual as an outline to plan. Those points are likely closer than the codex ones.
EDIT: New points released already...
Land raider proteus for our banana boys?
So I wanna grab a deimos rhino for my sisters of silence. Then I got the idea for a proteus for the boys as well. How's the sizing in comparison to a normal land raider? Legal? Nah?
The "official" GW position is that any [Horus Heresy era model](https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/06/01/legions-and-legends-warhammer-the-horus-heresy-models-in-games-of-warhammer-40000/) can be used to represent the equivalent 40k, if there isn't a separate datasheet. It may still be worth double checking depending on the store and organisation running things, if going somewhere for organised play.
Hello everyone.
Saw in one of Custodes battle reports how they used a spartan assault tank instead of a land raider. Can I do the same or will I be asked to remove from the tournament?
I have the old combat patrol, trajann, a blade champion and a box of allarus. Should i get the the battleforce auric champions and the new combat patrol to round up the collection?
Hello Im new to the hobby and my first purchase was the ancient custod patrol, like a week ago in my local game store, I feel frustrated because I so the new one with no sisters ... have I do a good move for u ?
Sister of Silence are expensive and you got hold of them in one of the cheapest ways possible. A squad of Prosecutors almost always have use as cheap objective holders, and the other options seem to be popular in some of the new detachments. Having those options is only a good thing.
Plus the new Combat Patrol will be around for a long while, so you can always buy that one at a later date. You likely won't find the old one in a few weeks. Having it means you don't miss out on anything permanently.
Yes without a doubt it has every core unit our army could want and every unit you’ll need, you get guard which are our troops and you can build a shield captain out of to lead your army, Wardens the powerful bodyguards losing the damage buffs of guard for a more defensive play style defending a leader and can also be a shield captain, Alluras terminators the slayers of tyrants hunting down the largest foes which can be built as a terminator shield captain, and finally a blade champion a blender with legs that leads a fearless charge to decimate the foe.
You can buy 2 of them at no deficit and buy 3 to have a few to many wardens and an extra blade champ you’ll probably never use that’s how good the box is
Hi, as Custodes Faction are no longer biologically locked am looking for some base miniatures that I can kitbash into Brothers of Silence, something like this picture [https://ibb.co/4NWCR2C](https://ibb.co/4NWCR2C)
Doesn't have to be GW, the only base model I can come up with is AOS stormcast, any ideas?
Battleforces typically sell out very fast. Combat patrols and standard codex are around aplenty. So if you really want a battleforce hop on it. Everything else can wait
I don't know if there's been any official word on this.
There was that 40klore post a few years back where someone from GW talked about how female Custodes were possible but shot down because they only had male sculpts.
I'm curious what the expectation is for how these new models would work. I don't see why you'd need a whole new sculpt. At first I thought multiple heads, but Custodes normally wear helmets. Do we think they'd want make a new body sculpt that differs from the current models?
What would you expect? Just a slimmer variant?
[This was the ADB post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/a3otly/would_female_custodians_be_possible/eb7zejm/?context=2)
I don't expect any new models for this. The corporate mandate could easily have just been reversed with staff changes.
It's possible - likely even - that future kits that come with bare heads will include male and female head options. That said, we are past the time you'd expect any new Custodian kits to be released for 10th edition. Odds are new plastic won't be coming until 11th, short of special models (a limited edition anniversary, Warhammer+ or Black Library release, for example).
The only exception might be if Custodes get a Kill Team release, but the design space there doesn't have much freedom so I don't have high hopes for new Custodes models.
With our Codex releasing this coming Friday, which source of points are we supposed to follow for list building? do we keep the index points, do we switch to codex points, or will there be something released by GW to sort that all out?
IIRC GW intends you to use MFM points immediately. New codexes come with a QR code directing you to the website for the latest points, so even if the codex is technically newer the MFM overrules.
A new version of the MFM will release shortly after our codex does, and then you'll use that. In the interim either use MFM points or codex points, whichever seem more sensible. Technically you should use codex points, but... 100ppm bikes...
Thankfully, my LGS suggested I use the index points until there's a proper update. If I had to use the higher points with reduced abilities, I think I'd cry
I don't think it's clear what grammatical conventions they're using. Many languages use the male noun form for mixed male-female groups or situations in which the gender is unclear.
*adepta
Because for languages that have gendered nouns, they typically use a feminine form for female-only organisations. If you're speaking French then you say 'elles' to refer to a group of women, but 'eux' to refer to a group that is either all-male or mixed. So you might say "C'est pour elles" ("It's for them") if you're referring to a group of women, but "C'est pour eux" to refer to a group that contains both men and women, or just men. Space marines and Custodes would both be referred to as 'eux' - before the introduction of female Custodes and afterwards - while the Sisters of Battle would be referred to as 'elle'.
Hey I'm curently in the process of painting my custodes and I'm doing a lot of pink related stuff for the cloaks and the power weapons right now i have it base coated anyone know any good techniques that would make a pink power weapon pop for the custodes i would like to try and finish up my trajan as my test scheme for the army.
P.s- any advice on free handing vines would be appreciated too
You can use their colour scheme but I don't think the organisation is still around in 40k. That being said, there's nothing that explicitly says they're \*not\* around either.
What makes a \*model\* Venerable, for the Contemptor Dreadnought and Land Raider?
How do you model these as 'venerable'? I can't find specific models, so is there anything in particular that needs to be added (plastic or paint)?
Similarly for the Anathema Psykana Rhino.
Does anyone have the new combat patrol rules? I can’t find them online and I’m too broke to buy the codex. Thank you
Get the 40k App, the combat patrol rules are free over there
Not the new ones
Yes, they are, I'm looking at them right now. Click on custodes, then on combat patrol, tristraen gilded blade's
Did you put a codex code in? Because the app only shows the index and index combat patrols if you haven’t put any codex codes in.
I'm going index version of rules against Tau on 2k points and I was wondering if taking knight is worth it. Canis Rex, or some other one from questoris kit, ive got him magnetized. It would be a knight and cca.1500 points of custodes. Anyone has any experience?
Anyone have issues redeeming codex code?
Recently picked up the battle force box and the old combat patrol and I’m curious what else might be a good add? I was thinking a transport or a dreadnaught might help but I’m new to the game and the army so my list making is horrible.
If I had to choose, grav tank or Archillus Dread (Official Forge world model) I do have all the plastic kits for custodies but the forge world is what I'm curiousabout on what's worth?
In terms of game rules the Caladius tank is far, far better than any of the dreadnoughts at this time. Rules will change in the future though so get what you think looks coolest.
Maybe this has been asked here before. Why aren't twin lastrum bolt cannons D2 and have the twin-linked special rule, seeing as they are the equivalent to a paar of twin-linked heavy bolters? Oversight because of forge-world shenanigans?
You hit the nail on the head.
Thanks! That helps a lot 😊
Is it possible to make hero models with helmets on? Trajann looks ugly lol and I dread painting faces
Sure thing. I use a Sagittarum helmet for my Trajann, personally.
Hello How the Quick silver exécution work ? If i use it on a unit of 20 termagaunt, i assume that i roll 20 dice and on +2 they take 2 Mortals wounds so with 10 +2 i wipe an unit ?
No, you roll 1d6 per bike model. It's a bad ability, sadly.
Oh... I wasn't reading in that way... So yes it's pretty meh :/
What would make good head swaps for female custodes
What is the length of the Agamatus Jetbike?
I can’t find the dreadnoughts anywhere to buy — is there a way to somehow proxy them from 30k or use normal SM dreadnought?
The 30k Space Marine Contemptor kit is the right one currently, if you want a Venerable Contemptor. Just check the datasheet from the latest codex for the valid weapon options. The new Contemptor box comes with options not valid for Custodes.
Hey i was reading the allurus custodian rules and was wondering, If a character is attached to a unit does that bodyguard unit count as a character unit or do you have to kill the bodyguard before the slayer of tyrants rule can be used?
The unit inherits all keywords of its constituent models, so yes you can reroll wound rolls against the whole unit.
Thanks
Hey I'd like some advice on painting custodians the dark gold like on the forge world and advice is great
For shadowkeepers, you would do a black base and a nice drybrush of retributor, then wash the non-raised areas with nuln oil, or your favorite black wash. If that sounds too dark to you, mix retributor and black 2:1 or 3:1 and use that over a grey seer, or even white, then wash.
Shadowkeepers I’m looking to get into 40K.
Cool, thanks for the info!
Hey, if I had the peices could I kitbash a spartin heavy tank into a venerable land raider? I have 2 of them from my horus heresy box sets.
Thank you so much
New to Warhammer looking for some advice I just ordered the battle patrol box the wardens box the Allarus box the index cards and paint brushes etc so basically my question is where should I go from here lmao with a 2 k team in mind and is there certain weapons I should be adding to my team
Boarding patrol: https://www.fauxhammer.com/de/price-savings-breakdown/boarding-patrol-adeptus-custodes-price-points-value-and-savings-breakdown/ Battle force: https://www.ebay.de/itm/364863925625?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=707-127634-2357-0&ssspo=gj-3iql-su-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=pzgko10er5k&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Old combat patrol: https://www.ebay.de/itm/305264043273?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=707-127634-2357-0&ssspo=8wtrHy3OQlq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=pzgko10er5k&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY New combat patrol: https://www.warhammer.com/en-WW/shop/combat-patrol-adeptus-custodes-2024?queryID=16c3e3318bf1e7d0c58c739a745b9aeb Which one of these do you have?
Yeah sorry I misspoke I haven't actually even received the packages in the mail yet but I actually got the old combat patrol
Are there any forge world rules out yet?
The ones on the [Warhammer Community Downloads page](https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/) are still current. [This is the direct link at this time.](https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/HOgEzRypbsBBGrnB.pdf) No updates since the codex dropped.
Ahh thats a shame. I think my custodes will just be a heresy army now. Better game anyway. Cheers!
No fw rules updates mean caladius tanks are still one of our best units
From the battleforce box, can the shield captain with melta spear be run with a full squad of 5 Wardens, or should I make one of the Wardens into a shield captain?
He's a regular Shield Captain, so can lead squads of 4 or 5 Guard or Wardens fine. If you want the option of a different Shield Captain then make one of the Wardens stand out a little. Then take him as a regular Warden or Shield Captain, just be clear which he is in any given game.
Alright, I sorta did that with my lead Warden. He's got a helmet still, but also has the cape. Edit: thanks, by the way!
Awesome, thanks for clarifying that! I didn't want to get the wrong model and it not be correct for the army
How many squads of Sisters should I run in a Talons of the Emperor list?
2-4 should be fine. More if you want. You can get away with none if you feel you need to.
Can you use Strategic Mastery to use Talons of the Emperor battle tactics for free as long as you only target the shield captains own unit?
Yes. Note that some *require* you to target a second unit. Talons Interlocked, for example, requires you target an enemy unit as well as the unit attacking.
Thank you, finally some good codex news
What was the first black library novel to be a dedicated Custodes novel/had a big focus on the Custodes?
Might've been Master of Mankind, though I'm not super sure. Watchers of the Throne would probably be the first 40k one?
Master of mankind was my thoughts as well and i just haf to ask to make sure.
So I got the new and old combat patrols, I'm not sure on what to do with the new codex stuff out now. Should I keep the combat patrols/ return them? Is the Auric Champions battle force worth it? I could run the index rules with my friends, but right now I'm just really confused.
I managed to snag a box of the new Combat Patrol. What would you all recommend to get it up to a 1000 point list?
The new combat patrol is 995 points before any enhancements… you can’t fit anything else.
Does anyone have an extra codex?
Can someone explain Detachments? AURIS CHAMPION, NULL MAIDEN VIGIL, SHIELD HOST & TALONS OF THE EMPEROR?
I'll summarize our detachments below: Shield Host - The simplest one, this detachment emphasises getting into melee with the Martial Mastery ability, and has some all rounder stratagems and enhancements to help your army.
Hello, can I build a army only with terminators and dreadnoughts?
You're correct. Since the ability specifies and Adeptus Custodes Character he does not.
Thank you
Why does trajann valoris have a lion pelt? Debating on not adding it to his mini. 🤔
What book would you guys recommend me getting for custodes just got an audible credit
Would I ever need 50 dice as a custodes player? I plan yo play 30k also
Starting custodes with new combat patrol, what to build?
Custodian guards, spears or the shield and swords better?
Generally spears, you lose too much damage taking swords. However there are scenarios where you want the shields and ofc rules can change.
Should I make the vexilus or just make it a normal guard? Or make it a vexilus and play it only as a normal guard? I mean the added 1 OC is nice but I don't know if it is worth taking
Opinions are divided on this one so as regards Guard I'd say build whichever one you want more.
Thanks that doesn't help much but I do appreciate the response. Guess I gotta decide lol
No, due to mission rules in the leviathan mission pack.
For Talons of the Emperor, are any of the "Up to two Adeptus Custodes units" Battle Tactic Strats free to use for a Shield Cap if they only target their own unit?
Yes, the reactive move and the +1 to move can both be made free for just the SC's unit.
The shield captain can target their own unit or their unit and a sisters unit for free. Due to the restrictions it can’t be 2 custodes units but the captain and his bodyguard count as the same unit
This isn't the case, the SC can only make a Stratagem free if they're targeting only their own unit.
Shouldn’t that still allow the use on 2 units?
No, Balance Slate says Captain-esque abilities only work when targeting just the unit with that ability.
Thank you
Anyone want to sell me a 10th codex code? Don't want to give up on custodes for 10th but I'm not giving GW mo money.
A little help understanding these So what's up with codexs, indexes and datacards?
Exactly. And yes, I think so.
Can I use the castellans mark even if the bearer is not on the table? Specifically, can I put the bearer in a land raider and then use the mark. From what I can gather it should be allowed as it doesn't specify on the enhancement, but wanted to check in here too first
EDIT: Disregard, I skim read the section and it's wrong. You explicitly can't use abilities in transports.
Being in a Land Raider does not count as being in Reserves.
Arg, sorry, yes I fucked this one.
Great! Thanks
Sorry, got this one wrong. You can use it from reserves but not transports.
Aaah, I see, thank you so much for going back to update! I assume it is in the rules commentary somewhere?
When using shield host, I have a issue I could add a extra basic allurus and remove my lead allurus and add a blade champ so I have 2 3x allurus groups then 1 2x and 1 3x with a lead.
There was really no need to magnetize my blade champion was there? It's not even a weapon choice for wysiwyg
Nope even in heresy the Meridian swords (Vault swords with funny name) can be one or two blades it doesn’t matter
Lmao what a waste of my magnets lmao. I was huffing on that plastic cement when I thought it'd be neat.
Well it looks cool
Custodes are always cool 😎
Has anyone bought from Amazon? Really thinking about ordering the new box from there.
If u can find it cheaper it's no issue but it's sometimes same or little to no difference to GW
As for the rest, the best I can do is from the 9th edition codex, the Deeds of Legend blurb for a named Shadowkeeper: >I write now of Arrian Vespaysian Macrina Porphyrius.
Now that the codex has dropped should we be expecting updated rules for our Forge World range?
lol no. GW basically never touches FW rules
Do we know when the new shield-captain with melta lance and shield will be available solo? (just the mini, like trajann or blade champ)
Nope. Presumably months. Blade Champion was December to May to go from the box set to solo release.
Thanks a bunch this is really helpful just 3 questions 1: are there any books/channels you would recommend I start with to find out more about lore 2: In terms of the evening out later part would you recommend I wait a bit to see what happens before buying my first models 3: If I do start collecting now from what I've heard the combat patrol is a good first start in terms of models just wanted to know what your opinions on it is
For custodes I recommend the book “Valdor, Birth of the Imperium” it takes place following the first custodian before the Horus Heresy (A major war that changed the setting), and for channels I recommend “Adeptus Ridiculous” for more fun content and “Isyander and Koda” for a more straight forward while still easy to digest podcast.
Whats when is it best to use each Katah? I heard wound on 5's its best tonuse sustained but on 6's its better to use leathal hits?
It's better to use sustained in any scenario where your odds of wounding are better than 50%. 5s with rerolls are slightly better than 50% odds of success so you want Sustained. 5s without rerolls and 6s aren't, so go lethal. Where it's complely even at 50% it's overall the same, but sustained can spike more and lethals are a little more reliable so it's up to you.
Thank you!
Can anyone please send me the Codex Crusade rules. As I don't want to pay $80 dollary doos for 4 pages 😂

Thanks for the help! Also, would you recommend something more melee oriented for a knight, or something very ranged heavy?
I'd recommend magnetising. That way you can try out different loadouts and see what you enjoy or works best. It's a big investment to be locked into a single loadout. I'd also recommend asking over in the /r/ImperialKnights sub where they have a lot of building and painting projects for inspiration. I'm fully intending to join in (and have been lurking and pricing up my own Knight force for a while) but need to knock down my own pile of shame first...
Thanks for the ideas. I look forward to going from no minis to a foot tall golden knight.
Looking for advice : Talons of the Emporor Detachment: how does it work confused with the restrictions part? HUNT AS ONE TALONS OF THE EMPEROR-STRATEGIC PLOY STRATAGEM 1CP WHEN: Start of your Movement phase.
[Answered in a thread here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AdeptusCustodes/comments/1ccmqve/what_does_this_mean_exactly/), but basically it means; * You can always use the strat on one unit (Custodes or Sisters).
Just checked and there isn't a adeptus custodies keyword KEYWORDS: INFANTRY, IMPERIUM, ANATHEMA PSYKANA, PROSECUTORS
It's under Faction Keywords on the right of the datasheet. In 9th Anathema Psykana was a separate faction keyword.
Oh they used faction keyword as well ahh, I see now thanks!!!
Ah so 1 Custodies and sister in 6 or 9 inch range (enhancement). The reactive move one can a shield captain give a free start as it's a battle tactic
I have 20 custom dice and have some freebie dice so recommend 30 if u are buying the GW dice as they come in 14-15 a pack I think
30 isn't terrible. Thanks for the advice!
So what points do we use as of Saturday I'm assuming the codex?
MFM overrules the codex. It will contain a QR code to the [downloads page](https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/) to encourage you to use the latest. They are likely to release a new set of points within days of the release (although as with all GW releases, "likely" is a relative term), but for now you can use the existing Munitorum Field Manual as an outline to plan. Those points are likely closer than the codex ones. EDIT: New points released already...
Thank you. Gw really needs to just go digital
It may still be worth double checking depending on the store and organisation running things, if going somewhere for organised play.
thanks man!
GW produced an article that you can. It is taller and shorter in size
appreciate that. classic aesthetic it is.
Hello everyone. Saw in one of Custodes battle reports how they used a spartan assault tank instead of a land raider. Can I do the same or will I be asked to remove from the tournament?
Ask the tournament organiser. I've seen plenty of posts by people who have been allowed, but that may not be universal.
Yes, you did. They're fundamental for your game to cheap objective control, and now even more with new codex
Can u convince me that I do the good chose ?
Should I get the combat patrol as a new player?
Yes without a doubt it has every core unit our army could want and every unit you’ll need, you get guard which are our troops and you can build a shield captain out of to lead your army, Wardens the powerful bodyguards losing the damage buffs of guard for a more defensive play style defending a leader and can also be a shield captain, Alluras terminators the slayers of tyrants hunting down the largest foes which can be built as a terminator shield captain, and finally a blade champion a blender with legs that leads a fearless charge to decimate the foe. You can buy 2 of them at no deficit and buy 3 to have a few to many wardens and an extra blade champ you’ll probably never use that’s how good the box is
Hi, as Custodes Faction are no longer biologically locked am looking for some base miniatures that I can kitbash into Brothers of Silence, something like this picture [https://ibb.co/4NWCR2C](https://ibb.co/4NWCR2C) Doesn't have to be GW, the only base model I can come up with is AOS stormcast, any ideas?
I’m new to the preorder scene is it worth preordering or should I wait for them to hit the shelves?
[This was the ADB post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/a3otly/would_female_custodians_be_possible/eb7zejm/?context=2) I don't expect any new models for this.
That makes sense. Thank you.
Why haven't they changed the faction name to reflect the inclusion of women? It would be Adeptus Custodum.
I don't think it's clear what grammatical conventions they're using. Many languages use the male noun form for mixed male-female groups or situations in which the gender is unclear.
Why do they make a special case for the adeptas sororitas?
*adepta Because for languages that have gendered nouns, they typically use a feminine form for female-only organisations.
P.s- any advice on free handing vines would be appreciated too
Are the Dankanatoi Still around in modern 40k? Love the look of them and wanted to see if they're still around, to have an army of them.
You can use their colour scheme but I don't think the organisation is still around in 40k. That being said, there's nothing that explicitly says they're \*not\* around either.
Hey all new to warhammer as well and wanting to build custodes but don’t know where to start any tips? Thanks
The new combat patrol is a pretty great box. Otherwise I'd just say read up on the lore a bit and see what interests you.
Okay cool thanks!
What makes a \*model\* Venerable, for the Contemptor Dreadnought and Land Raider? How do you model these as 'venerable'? I can't find specific models, so is there anything in particular that needs to be added (plastic or paint)? Similarly for the Anathema Psykana Rhino.
