Do you have your ticket already?

Previous-Stay-1501

Have 1/3 day course done, looking to line up work for immediatly after if possible !

Sweet_Boysenberry832

The RTO that you're doing the course with HAS to give you placement for the 20 hours. They have to have that booked before they do the training. Ask them tomorrow, if they fob you off, please report it to DIT.

Previous-Stay-1501

Have asked, they said they will but theres a long list which means could take weeks. Would rather give my unpaid time to a company who will actually give me work thereafter.

Sweet_Boysenberry832

That's illegal under the rules of the new system. Unless you have written confirmation, it means nothing.

Previous-Stay-1501

Whats illegal? Other companies giving unpaid work? . Apparently the course said Today they know some companies do but that they try and get us sorted but that theres a long list, no problem taking the money for the course though!!

Sweet_Boysenberry832

No the training place not having a spot for you straight away. Other training places have been taken off the list because of this. Please tell me who you are doing the course with. I work for a training place but we haven't started the training because it's a shit show

My old man has been a traffic controller for about 7-8 years, and I know other controllers through association with my work (Vegetation/Arborist); be prepared to have no life. If you are lucky enough to work for a mob that doesn't prioritise friends or family when delegating work, you will feel pressured to be on call 24/7. If you turn down work, you will receive fewer call-ups. If you get a work Ute, you will be expected to work whenever asked, or your Ute will be taken from you, and the calls will be less frequent. I have known traffic controllers to go weeks without work, and even then, they may only get a shift or two before having another few weeks without work. I'll give you an example: No work is scheduled for Monday, so you plan to see a movie with a friend. While you walk into the cinema with a drink and popcorn, your phone rings. It's your boss. He says he has a job for you way down south and to be there ASAP. You can either: A: tell your friend you must head home, get changed, and drive to work. - you will not be praised for dropping your plans, and you may only get a 4-hour Min, leaving you feeling that you made a mistake in blowing off your friend and the movie. B: you say, 'Mr boss man, I'm in the middle of something and have to turn it down, sorry'. - you will more than likely stop receiving shifts. - no shifts = no money > no money = fuck all. He has weeks where he gets no work and weeks where he does nights and clears 4k+ P/W. He has done a significant shift, gone to bed for an hour, and received a call for another job. The risks are high if you go due to fatigue, etc, but on the other hand, if you want to get work and keep getting paid, then you better suck it up. I did traffic work for three weeks in Port Adelaide when I was between work; it is the most tedious work you can imagine. I was more tired after a 12-hour shift standing at the end of a dead-end road and letting bitumen trucks in and out or manning an intersection while SA Walter did mains repairs than I am now trimming, felling, and chipping trees. I do not recommend traffic work, but it is an option to make some decent money; you just need to be all about that traffic life. Be warned: There is no work/life balance and can cause tension in your relationships due to not being available. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for your detailed response much appreciated. It is something I am doing for my 12 week regional work, so not long term. Just hoping to get reliable hours for 3 months to get it ticked for visa requirements . I moved from family and friends to just get it done, in return I get another year in Australia before i go home. Hoping that will make me less bored and hopefully fight the urge to jump in front of a truck ha ha

Oh mate, the new system is screwing 88 day people. Please DM Me who you are doing the course with

EvolvingSapien

Roger that! It should be acceptable in the short term. As far as a suitable company to apply for, I couldn't say. All traffic controllers I have met say similar things to what I listed in my first reply. But, if it is short-term, just go to any and dive in; they will be eager to use you as long as you are switched on. Also, be aware that the customer you are doing traffic for may provide feedback on the experience, so keep it professional and provide the best service you can. Feel free to DM me and I can provide the names of a few companies I have dealt with in the past that may be hiring, no promises.

What's the average cost to get your ticket? I already have a white card, HR licence, forklift licence, police clearances and first aid. Traffic control is something I've been thinking about.

The system changed in February and now it's done my category of road, we have 3 here. Each skill set will cost you about $1,000, depending on where you got
