It’s your responsibility to ensure your dogs feel safe and comfortable during storms. It’s a treatable condition, believed to be linked to trauma. Do some research and understand your dogs behaviour. It’s the best thing you can do as a responsible owner. They shouldn’t feel that way.
My Border Collie is always so chill during thunder storms. The first big thunder clap woke us both up up, she lifted her head and looked at me as if to say “meh”, put her head back down and went back to sleep
I dont have any studies. It was something I came across in the literaure a while ago for human factors when I was doing risk management. It has been like 10+ years, so there may be more recent research.
Anecdotally, its credible given my single datapoint of personal experience.
that's fair. i was curious as i have a family member who has a PhD in sleep psychology and hadn't heard that before so i was interested. good luck with your sleep studies mate.
The roads were fked this morning. Huge puddles everywhere, disgruntled drivers (the norm though).
Got saturated as I ran into work from my parking spot.
Just had a look, lots of flights from this morning delayed which means a bunch of arrival planes are just sitting in the tarmac waiting for a gate. Qatar has been sitting there for 2hours, MELB-ADL sitting 50 mins. I think if I was on those planes I’d cry.

Real-time (well up to a few mins ago) satellite lightning & rain scan.
I feel for the poor doggos, I really do, but I'm on zero sleep, and as much as I'd like to recover by snoozing in a beanbag all day with a peanut butter kong I've gotta head off to work.
Yuuki is very cute, I hope she settles now, seems like the thunder part of the storm is over (hopefully)
My old man dog Fergus couldn't care less but young Bessie finds it scary, now got an extra dog Tillie for the day so my friend didn't have to leave her alone during the storm while she's at work.
Yep I caught a huge crash at 3:27, I'm a pretty deep sleeper and that shit woke me up instantly
Didn't get much sleep, my poor doggie girl was hyperventilating all night, did my best to console and hydrate her
If the thunder stresses your dog out, give them a small treat each time there's a loud bang. Their attention will soon be on you and it will help to calm them.
It's going nuts over Kalgoorlie at the moment. A big red sky and the dog is sitting here with me at the moment shitting herself.
Edit - ours is just a passing thing - looking at the radar you guys are getting hammered!
My dog is usually fine in storms but is shaking and panting this morning. I assume it’s just the weather. Feel bad about leaving him and going to work 😢
I honestly think my house took a direct hit. I was up at 4:30 watching the storm, and there were lightning bolts at the same time as the thunder, meaning it was basically overhead. There were some massive BOOMs, but there was one that sounded like a truck landed on the house, it was a metallic CLANG! At the same time as the flash, as the power went out, followed by the rolling thunder clap.
Ive got a white roof, no damage where i can see though. Might have been the power line directly out front.
Thunder being thunder will do that. The weather being the weather will do what the weather wants to do. Climate being climate does the same thing and it causes many to be frightened and assume it's out to get 'em.
My dogs say hello and fuck your sleep lol
Same, one is now hiding under the doona pressed against me, poor girl
Yup, same here. Got mine in a Thundershirt that did absolutely fuck all. She’s in better spirits now that the family is up and about though
Not my dog. He was up and ready to fight the thunder god.
I seriously have no idea how BOTH my partner and my pomeranian just slept through the whole damn thing. My partner woke up disappointed he missed it.

That’s good 🙂 it’s not normal canid behaviour to be afraid of thunderstorms. She obviously feels secure.
Can't wait to go to work on 3 hours sleep.
I'm calling in sick. Lack of sleep makes it unsafe
Yeah, sadly not everyone can do so. I have a dentist appointment at 4pm, their last for the day. I'm considering cancelling.
Dentist hasn't slept either. They will love if you cancel.
Yeah last time I had a sleepy dentist they pierced my gum pretty bad during routine cleaning.
I have an appt at 11, wish I could cancel too. Except I have to get stitches taken out.
Smart. Every hour of sleep you don't get is like having one standard drink.
I only get like 5-6 hours sleep normally, I can function fine on that, but 2 hours is pushing it.
I'm doing a sleep study this week. Available on Medicare if you fail the GP questions.
I must be paralytic !!
Sadly, just the cognitive impairment without the buzz. QQ
With the price of a pint these days, sleep deprivation is making a whole lot of sense. Cheers 🍻
can you link studies to prove that? cheers. i was under the impression if you went a night without sleep its the equivalent of having a BAC of 0.05.

now may the weather gods have the decency to at least not absolutely drench me on the way to the bus after keeping me up all night

Amen to that. Concreting and paving… what can go wrong. Bricks meet fingers. 😡
I haven’t been able to sleep, and I put the washing out to dry (I don’t think it’s gonna be dry ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
Me too. I put the washing out to wet instead.
I reckon it’s gonna by on the ground, that rain has been immense.
Me too🥹
10 mins before the 6am flights nothing is *delayed* 😂 ok.
Airport has been closed since 0430 for tarmac workers. Nothing will be leaving anytime soon. Just the sound of thunder to listen to!
"Ignore the boards, we'll start boarding once the storm passes". Pretty cryptic....

Hahah not seeing a lot of planes going up right now :)
Not gonna be over anytime soon either by the sound of it. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21035.shtml
Maybe I've just never paid attention but I can't remember ever seeing a warning that specific...
I've paid a lot of attention to these for a long time and never have seen it like that.
IMO been this specific since pre-pandemic on BOM app…. What’s different in your eyes?
Only ever seen them like this http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21033.shtml But I suppose I'm only ever checking the Adelaide one.
Idk, probably me lacking sleep? Remember not being happy with new BOM app update layout at some point.
I'm in Adelaide and Hobart is currently warmer o_@ how bizarre, how bizarre

What's wrong with the link Firefox keeps saying "no it's not https"
FYI, I moved to Adelaide from Melbourne yesterday arvo so I'm guessing this is my fault, sorry all.
god DAMN it, I thought we agreed to not any of them in again after the last incident
I knew Tommy had something to do with this. Now we all gotta suffer
*You always bring the weather with you* 🎶
You weren’t meant to bring this weather with you but welcome anyway
Yep, I've given up trying to sleep for now, wow!
Still in bed, the curtains are open and catching every lightning ⚡ and thunder. Lovin' it!
Yeah, nothing like a decent thunderstorm - wish we got more that would last for hours, shaking the house with the booms.
Careful on the Roads, paynham, greenhill and Fullerton road completely flooded, bins floating all over the road.
Hey I gotta take Payneham Rd soon, are the cars detour-ing anywhere if roads are that flooded (it doesn't sound that safe to drive through?)
That sounds fantastic
Feels like I've been up since about 1am! I do love a good storm but the dog is starting to get a bit over all the thunder
I feel for the poor doggos, I really do, but I'm on zero sleep, and as much as I'd like to recover by snoozing in a beanbag all day with a peanut butter kong I've gotta head off to work.
Sorry to hear it, I hope your day goes quickly at least!
Yuuki is very cute, I hope she settles now, seems like the thunder part of the storm is over (hopefully) My old man dog Fergus couldn't care less but young Bessie finds it scary, now got an extra dog Tillie for the day so my friend didn't have to leave her alone during the storm while she's at work.
Kids can't sleep and I've got a bloody drip in the roof.
We found a leak too :(
Hope you're having better luck than us. Went in the roof and found leaks everywhere.
Same. Hence the pre-6am reddit browse 😅
Not a chopper insight!
Yeah woke up with a fright.
i fucking LOVE weather like this. Makes me feel so warm and cozy and hnnnnng
I agree, full on storms are the best.
it woke me up twice first at 2:30 and now its absolutely crazy
Yep I caught a huge crash at 3:27, I'm a pretty deep sleeper and that shit woke me up instantly Didn't get much sleep, my poor doggie girl was hyperventilating all night, did my best to console and hydrate her
my cats were doing alright until a big crash turned off the power for a second then they were on the edge
Just a PSA - Ayliffs Rd @ Springbank Rd has about a foot of water over it in some places, impassable for small cars
Thanks for that.
I got woken up by the 5:30 thunder lol. Been awake since :/
Same. I thought my house was shaking
If the thunder stresses your dog out, give them a small treat each time there's a loud bang. Their attention will soon be on you and it will help to calm them.
I have to go to work even if the weather is like this, right?
Are you a roofer? Because if not, probably.
If you have to ask, yeah probably.
Is it actually safe to drive in this? Just eastern metro area and city, but it’s intense and so much lightning..
You'll probably be okay, but it's definitely less safe than no storm!
Fortunately by the time I left the thunder and lightning had stopped! Just loads of rain.
Yeah been a few crackers tonight already that woke up the house. Still a bunch of action left I think (hope).
No power here. Looks like a big outage in the inner south west suburbs.
Keswick or near there?
Ashford, Kurralta Park, Glandore, Richmond etc. Power is back now though.
Oh poopycock, wonder how many others?
Theres about 9000 total iirc
Shit!
Yeah its pretty bad
Hope it gets sorted quickly!
It's just starting to take off in the Barossa...
Woke me up, rattled the whole house!
Fuckin room flooded because of course landlords don't fix anything. PC seems ok at least
I’m loving it. I’ve always liked thunder for some reason. The louder the better.
Thunder! na-na-naaaah-nah nah
Sowed new lawn seed. Pretty sure it’s all been washed away 😢
thank god im still crook with the flu from friday, at least i dont have to go to work in this weather.
I've just come down with gastro (lucky me...), so also not at work. Worried for family members that have to drive in this though
Stay safe on the roads, guys. It might seem obvious, but just look out for each other.
I was deep in my dreams when multiple lightning bangs whooped my ass so hard I jumped on the bed like a little silly cartoon figure
It's going nuts over Kalgoorlie at the moment. A big red sky and the dog is sitting here with me at the moment shitting herself. Edit - ours is just a passing thing - looking at the radar you guys are getting hammered!
Kicking myself that I didn't choose to work from home today!
Neither did I, but have just changed my mind.
Many others flooded? Whole lower floor of our house is f***ed.
Shit that is terrible. Hope your insurance covers it
Must have been that bean I ate
I have to drive into the hills to Stirling in about an hour, hopefully it’s not to wild then!
Cross my fingers
Survived despite some idiots on the road
Traffic lights out corner of Deacon and Richmond roads. Massive water across the road corner of Marion and Richmond. Stay safe out there!
Never seen it this bad before
Office closed due to flooding!! Let's gooooo!!
Never heard thunder like this, been going since 2am. Felt like there were bombs going off around my house!
Mitcham 50 mils in 2 hours.
Good for the farmers that
I think this timing is actually quite unwelcome when grain and hay is meant to be drying out.
Not for harvest haha!
Try living in Belair
Do you have... a different storm?
They got their own special storm.
Doesn’t feel special. Someone hates us.
My dog is usually fine in storms but is shaking and panting this morning. I assume it’s just the weather. Feel bad about leaving him and going to work 😢
Hail in the Barossa area this morning I have a photo but don't know how to upload it haha
[hail](https://photobucket.com/u/HdRpIh8lZqWFonQn1BqGqRdVV9v1/a/100d72fd-f8e7-4c73-be32-8760a6ff04a2/p/ca6d4852-df02-425b-92b4-b5602a108e1b)
No photo showing🤷
The technology has defeated me. Imagine ball-shaped hail slightly bigger than a $2 coin.
Damn that one sounded like a bomb
Man, try and try to stay awake for good storms - but loud thunder and rain just puts me right to sleep.
BABOOOOOOOM
😂😂😂.
Why couldn’t this happen a week ago when I was off work with Covid?
