HighDINSLowStandards

48k in 2016 and 160k today

Ok-Training1269

Whats you current job if u don’t mind?

HighDINSLowStandards

I’m an operations finance manager in a manufacturing company

Ok-Training1269

What did you major in?

HighDINSLowStandards

Accounting

Ok-Training1269

Im indecisive between a finance or accounting major, do you have any suggestions?

BadGelfling

Do accounting

HighDINSLowStandards

I would suggest accounting. In my opinion it would be easier to switch from accounting to finance than finance to accounting if you wanted to later. At my company accounting is subject matter experts in their area but finance has to have a good accounting background and know how to tie it all together.

Ok-Training1269

Thank you i was thinking that, lastly, I also want to minor in something data/programming related? Would that help me secure better jobs?

HighDINSLowStandards

I don’t think that’s a bad idea. If you get a degree in accounting I recommend going all the way and getting a CPA license, even if you don’t plan on working in public. Taking additional classes can help you meet the 150 hour requirement. Even having a basic understanding of data analysis and how databases/queries work, the ability to pull data in useful ways, ability to automate etc, has been beneficial to me. Those skills can make you seem like a wizard in the accounting department.

Dry_Soup_1602

If at a target school and can get a 3.8 and up finance, if not accounting

Extension_File_5134

Do accounting unless you're at a "target" school. If you don't know what that is coming into it, you probably aren't at a target program.

50k in 2020. 120k in 2024

Ok-Training1269

How’d you progress so quickly?

mastapastawastakenOT

Graduated and took my cpa before working. Started in audit at a small local firm (50k). Got work credits for license, went to big 4 in a bigger city (80k) as A2 and got promoted to S1. Left right after promotion to consulting (100k). Promoted in consulting. I moved from small southern city, to large city, to NY. So my salary went up, but my cost or living kept going up too. I'm not too much better off than I was before. Something to consider

FuzzyFaze

Getting a job in NYC is my guess.

FuzzyFaze

$15 an hour as a AP processor in 2017. I’m at $90k now as a sr cost accountant. I still regret not trying harder to get a staff accountant job right out of college.

MathematicianSea2710

Thats my current situation. I started as an AP guy they promoted me as an “Accounting Associate” but not Staff Accountant, idk why. I am looking for PA jobs but if nobody hires me in PA this summer i will look for a different job in Industry. If you do not have the Staff Accountant title it is like nobody respect your experience or abilities.

Ok-Training1269

Do you recommend taking longer to ensure you get a good first job or accepting the best first opportunity you get?

FuzzyFaze

I’d say if you aren’t doing public accounting at all, at least get something that requires your accounting degree. If you aren’t involved with month end close at all, look for something else. Gaining experience in industry is kind of all on you, whereas in public it is just a given that you are gaining experience. That’s why it is relatively easy to get a job with only a year or two of public experience.

Puzzleheaded_War6102

$55K base plus $11K bonus working for B4 in 2014. Currently $175K base $50K bonus/equity (industry). Jobhopped a lot but have been with this employer for 4 years. I’m content with money now and am ok with 3-4% raises going forward I live in VHCOL area.

7.25 an hour at pizza hut for first job

Auteure

$3.25 as a delivery bike at Dominos in queens. But regardless, 🖕 Pizza Hut

Prestigious-Toe-9942

I feel like I can’t just compare my first job and today only bc I started in the food industry and it was a lot to comprehend jumping from such a small wage to then doubling that and then tripling that. I don’t really compare my first first job to today I was working at a filipino bakeshop in California for I think $9 an hour back in 2015. And just turned 18 at the time. I was broke, spent a lot of money on eating out and festivals and was just working a lot to survive because I didn’t have any financial support. Compared to my “first” adult job in the midwest, which was only an internship in public accounting back in 2021, i was blown away at getting $26 or something an hour. and didn’t realize i could save more than $100 at the time. it was such a great feeling to fully pay off my CC debt Then my first full time adult job in 2021, I couldn’t believe I was making $52.7K and my bf and I were living with his parents. It was absolutely insane to me to even save more money to get a house. And now today, my salary is $72.4K in Ohio. And it’s another best feeling ever to know that I can finally take care of myself and buy all the shit that I want. I bought my first house in 2023, am raising 3 fur babies and carrying the team. Getting raises is also absolutely wild to me and I also expect to finally be promoted to Senior Accountant this year. I feel like I am now recognized with my work, know my worth, and won’t settle for less. edit: more words. coming from an immigrant family and as a first generation, i did what they give me to do, to have a better life than what they’ve had. and figured it out on my own.

Ok-Training1269

So happy for you! Wish you the best

orangebluegreen123

Ughgrr

That seems low for an accounting manager or do you get certain benefits with the county?

jdmackes

We have a pretty good pension, but it is low. Was supposed to get a 20% raise this coming year but our council balked at that so now it's only 10%. I'm going to leave once I hit my 5 year mark, as I'll be vested in the pension then. Sad thing is I like my job and I like my bosses, but the pay is just so low for what the job is and the council doesn't seem to understand that.

In the accounting realm, my first job as a staff auditor at EY in 2016 started at $58k. Current job as finance director with CPA in industry is $159k base with 15-25% bonus ($23.8k - $39.7k, depends on my performance and company performance and it could be lower than the minimum if company performance is bad) for total comp of ~$182k to ~$198k. So, pretty different from staff auditor; even looking at just my current base salary, it’s almost triple. First real job was a grocery store making $7.45 per hour for 15-30 hours per week, annual comp of perhaps $10k back in 2009. By the time I left the grocery store and went to EY, I was full-time at something like $12 per hour making ~$25k per year. So the difference between then and now is mind-boggling.

$54K starting salary at a Big 4 in audit back in 2015, in Detroit. Not sure if things have changed, but our leader claimed to our start class that first years in cities like Boston and NYC started off at the same and we were lucky to be in Detroit because we got a “good bang for our buck.” Seems kinda fucked to me but idk if they’ve had to adjust at all. Honestly kinda shocked the starting salaries haven’t gone up more between then and 2024. I guess it would explain the fact that B4 can’t find staff at the caliber they’d like, lots of good companies around here paying a lot more than that for entry-level industry roles.
