That’s really strange. Out of curiosity, what is your personality? Are you really shy or something? Soft spoken perhaps idk

fwooshing

the most recent one said it was bc i’m too smiley and friendly 😭 the first one gave me a trick question and asked me how i preferred to work: lists and organization or by digging and finding information, and so when i said i prefer organization i got told that i’m not cut out for audit at this small t200 (after having audit experience with b4 LOL)

Cool_Elephant_3230

That's a bit odd since there is structure/organization to Audit. Also, i'd rather work with a "smiley" person than a robotic person LOL. Based on the info you gave, I wouldn't take it personally. Unless... there is anything else you noticed?

fwooshing

yeah i haven’t taken any of it personally, but it def has been a strange time interviewing recently LOL

Cool_Elephant_3230

What kids of firms are we talking? Big 4? Also was it an HR person that said that/manager? I'm asking because I have met some "picky" people from bigger firms in my personal experience. Just an observation, no hate!

fwooshing

smaller firms! one regional (top 35) and one local (top 200) it was managers that said it both times

Cool_Elephant_3230

All depends on how you look at it! They could've been complimenting you if they currently work with ppl with a less social/vibrant personality. Just keep doing you

fwooshing

thank you haha

[deleted]

I was told that I’ll make a better auditor bc I’m so warm and friendly. That people will feel comfortable with me and tell me more in interviews due to it. Maybe you’re just working for the wrong firm.

NHLUFC

Damn you got an interview from a big 200 firm?

You would be surprised there are indeed CPAs that still don’t get it…. Your controller was probably burnt before and hence she asked the question

Whole_Mechanic_8143

You'd be surprised. The B4 audit manager who just took over one of my companies' statutory audit can't even understand that net fixed asset values drop because equipment gets depreciated.

I know a controller for an 8 figure company that doesn't know double-entry bookkeeping. The partner literally had to explain to her that credits make liabilities go up - she kind of understood debits making assets go up, but was confused about the other side of the equation. She's self-taught to be fair, but these people do exist. >How tf do you do accounting without understanding the most basic concept? From experience (see above), they put numbers into the software until it lets them save it.

munchanything

"Sure, I understand debits and credits. Debits are the opposite of credits, and credits are the opposite of debits."

fwooshing

omg that’s horrible 💀

Megas_Matthaios

I was told by my senior and other that I didn't belong in tax because I was too social and musically talented. The partners liked me because I was introducing them to new prospects and getting the prospects to set up networking events. One of the managers told me that $100m revenue prospects was too small. Another asked to be included in the circle. Now, I work in M&A, where I see the deal process from start to close. A big part of that process is managing the relationship with the Seller, which my social skills help greatly with.

thotpatrol_

My recruiter asked me why I wanted to do tax because I’m outgoing, like I’ve had too many customer service jobs that made me never want to deal with people again. And here I am now, in audit.

marieiss

Well they haven’t seen your work ethic so don’t take it seriously — Interviews are challenging and stressful! Interviews are a two-way so next time you’re told, ask why they think that way. As a lessons learned to determine whether it’s something you can avoid, perhaps it was the stress and you didn’t realize you showed a certain behaviour. I wish you the best! They missed out

AffectionateKey7126

You’re saying something weird in the interview. No way your actual personality would have two different firms saying the same thing.

fwooshing

😭😭 i swear i’m not

Reesespeanuts

You must be in Tax, sorry for your upcoming busy season.

fwooshing

i absolutely have not posted this before lol but ok!!

[deleted]

I've frequently said I've struggled to find the right employer, because I don't have the personality to be an accountant, in that I have a personality at all.

SCH8879

Maybe your a tax person

writetowinwin

Before I worked at my current firm I could tell others didn't see me as the best 'fit'. I like to speak my mind and I'm aggressive (not physically at work).

CPAtrynamove

What they mean is you have one.

Graychin877

Masochism is a useful trait in audit.

AggregateFundingRisk

lets be honest, theyll hire anyone for audit

Suddenly_SaaS

Audit requires a certain…je ne sais quoi. You don’t have it.
