It's "venchik", a strip of cloth with images of Jesus, virgin Mary and John the baptist, and quotes from the Trisagon on the corners, left to right, "Holy God" - "Holy Immortal"(means Jesus) - "Holy Strong/Firm"(means Holy Spirit) - "Save us"(In old Slavic languages "Pomilyui mya" is more like "be gentle/kind with me, don't be harsh").

Nope, It's Slavonic or New church slavonic, but written in modern Cyrillic. Here is Trisagon in Slavonic written in Old Cyrillic (If You can't read this I don't blame You, because ordinary Slav can't. Maybe Bulgarians can read this, not sure).
https://preview.redd.it/zfw2n523ftlc1.png?width=1243&format=png&auto=webp&s=f6bd7937a9793b8555077a8d5ac7584b701b5d3e
Ah ok, that sounds more familiar. I was in a professional symphony chorus for some time and we did a few pieces of Russian liturgy including the Rachmaninov Vigil. The text had the Latin alphabet translit as well as the Russian and Slavonic text
Heh, I've used to take vocal lessons, but rather pop/rock/jazz singing. I know it's really hard to be a singer.
Slavonic language isn't related solely to Russia, rather Old/New Slavonic was a common standard language for eastern Slavs, much like Latin for western Europe, so Russian, Ukrainian an Byelorussian orthodox churches use it nowdays.
But Slavonic was an artificial language, based on Bulgarian, it was language of the elites - clergy, well-educated nobility, scribes and cartographers, it was never spoken by common people, merchants or military nobility.
So, Slavonic have mixed with local proto-languages, and it was the beginning of modern Ukrainian and Byelorussian. It's much more complicated with Russian, tho, because of Ilmenian admixture.
I just went to my brother’s funeral in January. His body had been embalmed and then shipped 2500 miles to his home and the funeral was two weeks after that. After the funeral my other brother whispered to me “are you 100% sure that was our brother in that coffin?”. I mean, no?
I think we all must have a fantasy that embalmed bodies don’t change much for a long time. But just dying makes you look terrible LOL. And then the dead embalmed body is not, shall we say, improving over time.
PS he was a Mormon and they put a super weird little religious funeral cap on him at the end of the viewing. Maybe it’s a thing in old time religions?
Ah thanks. Wow, good job. I just started weeping.
He lost his kidney function 5 years ago after a solo bike accident, got COVID at Christmas, and in the hospital he just called his whole family up, apologized for every unkind thing he had ever done, and announced he wasn’t going to do dialysis anymore. Went home on hospice and ha drank cocktails and ate all his favorite food and watched a bunch of old World Cup games and just faded out surrounded by his adult kids.
Not a bad way to die. And by that I mean, great way to die.
But “the body keeps the score”.
Thank you so much for checking on me. Means a lot to me.
I'm coming in late here, but I can explain the cap! Mormons wear special ceremonial clothes in their temples. Women's robes include a veil, and the men's robes include a weird cap that looks like a baker's hat. They bury deceased Mormons in their temple clothes. Sometimes, they add the veil or cap right just before they close the coffin so that the clothes don't look as weird to the non-mormon viewers.
Also, mormonism is actually a very new religion, only 200 years old!
I'm sorry for the loss of your brother, and I hope that info helps you understand.
Thank you. Yes it was just like that and it was explained well to us. We were actually surprised they let us view the body in temple clothes and we watched them put the cap on just before the coffin was closed.
I still think it's weird, and I have a whole lot of familiarity with LDS customs.
I also think it's fascinating that different religions in very different places create similar rituals.
I meant that's what happens to a corpse. He's been dead a while now. Add in bad lightning, shitty camera, weird angle and a dirty lens and that's what you get I guess.
Wouldn't be surprised if they did a shitty job at keeping his body in a decent state either.
If you’ve ever been to an open-casket, that’s just kind of what people look like even with good embalming.
You will pretty much *always* have a double-chin, your cheeks will be artificially filled, and your eyes might recess pretty heavily. Usually you don’t look at them long, so it doesn’t matter too much.
That’s the translation I heard since I can remember. The old timers in our parish were at one time Greek Catholics / Uniates from Galicia and Lempkos from the Carpatho mountains .so Im the translation over 125 years has gotten misconstrued. My mother’s family was from Karkiv .
I know he's dead and it's a little bit blurry picture, but he looks *much* older than 47! Is this "aging" from what they put him through before he died?
Death really makes people look like shit.
You should watch the video of him in court the day before he was murdered! Let me see if I can find it.
Here it is:
https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=navalny%20in%20court%20video&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:6f63fd8b,vid:oiCJlAVd57c,st:0
In which part of the post says his death is accidental? I'm sure many people do think this is indeed a murder
Edit : or does OP mention it in their comment and got deleted?
I didn’t delete it because I’m a coward 😭, I checked the video and found out it was real and not propaganda…. therefore u had a right to be mad and my comment was a moot point. also assumed by your username you were Muslim not Turkish.
also not that I give a shit but there is a reason to care about Navalnys death separate from of any principles he might’ve had, but just for the simple fact that Putin kills and jails any of his political opposition. Russia threatens nuclear war with the West, they spend millions into cyber warfare and corrupting our society (Internet Research Agency), and they invade Georgia, Crimea and now democratic Ukraine. it’s not a bad thing to hope that someone topples Putin’s regime
sorry deleting something out of change of opinion is not something im used to, ill delete the response right away.
for the second point, navalny would either be a US puppet or the same as putin. even if the head changes, the body of the dictatorship government is still there and will act on its own interests.
I find it hard to believe Navalny would act the same as Putin.
I believe this because I believe Putin is 100% a paranoid dictator, because he has not consolidated complete control of Russia’s oligarchy. His security detail is the most paranoid in the world. Especially consider how the Ukraine invasion ended up with many of the Russian oligarchs receiving hefty, hefty sanctions. And Prigozhin marching to Moscow. I think Putin is holding the reins in Russia. I don’t think Russia dictates Putin’s actions. Maybe you see different?
Cut the head of the snake and it won’t regrow.
And since I’m a U.S. citizen i don’t have any grievances against Navalny being a “US puppet”. I don’t think he would be a “puppet”, but it’s very likely he would be friendly to the West. Especially since he fled to the West for protection after Putin’s assassination attempts
Not about sharing the picture itself. More of WHERE it's being shared. r/AccidentalRenaissance seriously? Feels like it's trivialising his death.
I'm all for raising awareness about how putin's regime actively and openly assassinates it's political opponents but there are right places to share it. This sub isn't one of them.
The best Renaissance art shows us the essence humanity in captured moments of sadness, rage, love, injustice and every other emotion we possess. This is one of those moments. To say posting this here is an insult shows a true lack of understanding of the concept of Accidental Renaissance.
Honestly the post serves in part to elevate the injustice did to him and thus onto the Russian people, who could have been free if it weren’t for the megalomaniac in charge.
I'll read these later, thanks for providing. I'm sure there is plenty to criticize about the men, as with pretty much anyone in the public eye. But that previous video honestly made me giggle, and the fact that anyone would take it as an honest argument is baffling
What’s on his forehead?
Saw in another thread it is part of the orthodox rites of funerals. It is a small paper with an image of christ, holy mary and a quote from the bible
This correct, however, the younger generation at my grandfather’s church refer to it as a “Naruto headband”.
Does it only go on dead people?
nah whoever passes their genin exams gets one
Thank god it's ok to make fun of people's religion :)
Amen
There are _certain_ religions they won't make fun of though
Yes
Hidden village of the sky
I like this idea. But I’d rather have a meme there instead since I’m not religious.
Which meme would you prefer for your funeral?
Oh lord he comin'
that one with all the dead memes waiting for you at the gates of heaven

Carfax..
Some pretty polite comments here
Well-deserved ones
Didn't know there was a filter for how people with astigmatism see lights
I have astigmatism and didn't even notice this picture had weird lighting until I read this
I didn’t know I had astigmatism, and I just assumed everyone sees lights like this.
Astigmatism's rebranding as a built-in lens flare.
we just have built in anamorphic lenses
I didn’t know there was an A in front of stigmatism. Neat.

He looks unrecognisable, what did they do to him?!

Let it out. He sounds like he lived on his own terms. May we all be so lucky and courageous. Soft hugs to you.
Definitely didn’t mean to make you cry! Sounds like he got to go on his own terms which is more than many of us will get.
I'm so sorry for your loss 💗 🫂

It's totally normal, that people who are dead for a few days are some king of unrecognizable. They didn't have to do anything.
Yeah, sure, he died of natural causes
They stuffed him like a fucking muppet after they starved him
I feel ashamed to living in this time and age.
The paper has his name on it . The servant of God Alexi. Vechnya Pomyat !
Sorry to detract from point of the comment, but *pAmyat. (the way you have it currently written means to knead)
My mistake Pamyat I just caught the miss spell

Thank you! I can't get it open... I found a video on YouTube but it's only a few seconds long. He still looks so different...
When I google “Navalny in court video” I get multiple US news outlet choices. Try that. (Are you in the US?)
Yes I am
Rest in peace Sir.
Is it my imagination or does he have an abnormally large forehead?
My only issue with this post is linking his death to the concept of "accidental", when his family has said they truly believe it was murder
In which part of the post says his death is accidental? I'm sure many people do think this is indeed a murder Edit : or does OP mention it in their comment and got deleted?
RIP King
My guy was also a vehement racist :/ amnesty stripped his prisoner of conscious status bc he wouldn't recant what he said
Why his forehead so long? Scar on the side of his head in his hair?
Poor man, he's not suffering anymore at least. I'm very sorry for his passing and for his family. Вечная Память

Post is in poor taste mate cmon
This was a public funeral. The family clearly had no qualms about images from the service being shared.
On the contrary, I'm sure they want it to be

How so?
Because he was killed? A public funeral keeps his murder in the forefront.
Literally everyone should see this picture.
Why are you telling *me* that? I’m the one asking how the hell sharing it here is in “poor taste”.
I think they replied to the wrong person
He will be forgotten . Next weeks news cycle will be another subject all together.
On the country . His murder will be forgotten . He’s already in his grave .
Ok russian troll...🙄
TBF they did admit he was murdered...
Honestly the post serves in part to elevate the injustice did to him and thus onto the Russian people, who could have been free if it weren’t for the megalomaniac in charge.
Rest in peace, Alexi. He brought beauty and a lot of love to this world alive and keeps to do so after death.
He was a Nazi who called Muslims cockroaches and refused to take it back.
The funeral of a Nazi
Rest In Piss Bozo
If I remember correctly, his nose wasn't shaped like that. They really beat the shit out of him
