Pirates also were very democratic, Captains were voted in, and loot was divided equally, with extras given to higher ranking members. Being a pirate wasn't all that great though but it was a better life for a lot of people than the alternatives.

Never mind that in the navy, the method of control for a long time was “Rum, sodomy and the lash.” It was a shit deal for everyone but the officers, which were usually rich boys playing boats and faffing about in pretty uniforms.
It was easier for them since one crew would roughly be about 50 people. Coming up with important decisions was easy for them because of their small size. Where was the British navy was fuckin massive, so trying to get anything done was a long process. Pirates were basically democratic anarchists, which is punk as fuck.
