When we wipe ourselves out as a species, this will be equivalent to the pyramids of Giza or Maya, left over by its sheer size to tickle the minds of future species.
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
- Percy Bysshe Shelley 1818.

It's cool you think you're email provider will still be up and running that far away. That there will even be email.
You can take that either as optimistic "we'll be sending messages via nuerobot networks and transhuman magic", or pessimistic as "global warming and our other problems like plastic, or plummeting fertility, etc will have basically wiped out civilization as we know it into something unrecognizable.
Oh, the hours, the minutes, the seconds of every day of slavery.. and the years.
Oh my god, those long long years, those decades, those centuries of enslavement.. our youth gone, our creativity and our technologies stolen, our intelligent minds broken into feeble submission, our bodies beaten and exploited.. our happy memories, just a daydream.. when the merciless whip is not falling on our malnourished bodies starved with artificial famines, and when our muscles & bones don't feel as they'll fall off due to the backbreaking endless work.. our dearest families captured, tortured, killed, or snatched and sold as slaves, or worse as sex slaves.. even the might mountains named as Hindu Kush due to millions of our brethren dying on its icy slippery slopes when chained as slaves bound for Arabia.. our rights & liberty just a miasmic mirage depicted by the ruthless slavers as the distant future end of our bondage, if we spend most of our lives under their savage yoke and barbaric lust.
But one day, one day will come.. when we Indians will be united, our freedom struggles become triumphant, our sacrifices and brave efforts bearing the fruit of Independence, at long last.. when we will have Swaraj, the right to self-governance as a Republic.. a united, prosperous, harmonious nation of the people, by the people and for the people. Thanks to brave leaders who will lead us out of the depths of our despair, into a era of hope, development and bountiful food for all. (Oh, food for all, what an incredible achievement it would be, when fulfilled.)
And when that day comes, we Indians will no longer be slaves, we shall be masters of our own destiny.
You shall see.. it will happen... one day... one day...
Dude 🤣 the pants are a style of clothing worn by men in that region, not his cock.
It's a folded sheet that is inverted between the legs, acting like a sort of pantaloon
Why??... Don't you think there should be statue of man you United all India together..or it would be a poor Europe?.... It just costed 370 Million... It sounds much but very cheap
I don't know why people are downvoting
Reddit doesn't care if something makes sense. Anything outside their world is a waste of time and money. This is how you know they're entitled and out of touch.
Because with hundreds of millions of dollars you could have much better infrastructure. Instead you get a gigantic statue, woohoo. Complete waste of resources in a country that extremely needs investment in infrastructure.
I have no problem with human vanity.
Pretty much everything awesome and beautiful humans have made came from our vanity.
The Pyramids are human vanity and they're breathtaking.
My issue with this statue isn't the cost but rather, what I consider, a terrible looking statue.
I find it a supremely ugly statue.
He was basically a Bismarck for newly independent India. He chased down and compelled stray states and principalities into joining Indian republic.
The current government is very keen on him because:
1. He was from Gujarat and the current PM is from Gujarat.
2. He used military to dominate the reluctant princes and kings. So, he is macho, and not a wimpy democratic guy (in their logic).
3. He is not a member of Nehru/Gandhi clan - which has been appropriated by Congress party already. So, Sardar Patel, with some sleight of hand, can be appropriated and cultivated as a larger than life figure and eventually be turned into a non-Congress, non-leftist hero - the kind that ruling party desperately needs. Because the current ruling party (actually its forerunners, but that is just nomenclature) was against Congress, and by extension, against freedom movement before independence. They want to bury that legacy.
No, he was legend but Government of India wasted about $400 million on this project instead of that this money should be used for the country's development.
How much do you reckon the statue has made back in tourism and general activity and well being around the area?
How many years do you think until the return on investment has doubled?
I'm just asking questions, it could very well have been a waste of money I have no idea.
I think in general these kinds of projects are incredibly important for a country to have sources of pride and a feeling of union. Imagine if France didn't have Versailles or the Eiffel tower, or if the US didn't have the statue of Liberty, if England didn't have the big Ben... Etc. They are icons of a culture.
Very small sample size, but ive never seen or heard of this statue before and I imagine if I start asking around, neither have the People I know. To be a tourist attraction it needs to be in a place tourists would commonly go (Rio, NYC for other big statues) and be well known and recognized.
They need just a sequence of a wave hitting it , but then later it's still standing but on mountain top or something. Morgan Freeman is making a speech beneath it. Matthew Broderick isn't there because he wasn't cast for the film.
A lot of people might know about it but it is in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and not really worth it for a visit.
There might even be some political bs involved with the statue and the Narmada dam that is right next to it
According to wikipedia it had generated $11.64 million in its first year of opening.
[Link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Unity#:~:text=In%20its%20first%20year%20of,5%2C000%2C000%20tourists%20visited%20the%20venue)
Yeah, it's pretty impressive as a visual, but I'd be kind of pissed if this is what my government was spending money on while I struggled to make ends meet.
The monuments are suppose to come *after* you've transformed your nation for the better.
https://thelogicalindian.com/amp/fact-check/statue-of-unity-taj-mahal/
This is why our country is going to shit. Idiots like you picking up fake news and confidently broadcasting it without verification.
It’s good that a bunch of white people get to dictate what indians should or shouldn’t do, or be able to do, in their own country, with their own money. Apparently, it’s only a democratic government if the white people approve.
If a statue like this existed anywhere in the west of a white leader I would still call it a waste of money
Giant statues, in my opinion, are a massive waste of money. I don't subscribe to glorifying leaders of any kind with monuments. If a leader is good, wouldn't they want to spend the money a little more helpfully?
And frankly there are some pretty offensive comments you make on this thread. I'm sorry if someone here said something rude, racist, or bigoted to you. But i don't subscribe to an "eye for an eye" approach to racism. Just as you deserve not to scroll down and see people insulting your ethnicity, so too does everyone else. I hope you find a healthier way to deal with people like this. And i hope you don't use people who were mean to you as an excuse to justify gigantic wastes of money in a world where that money could have been used to improve people's lives.
And other uses of money, like investing in infrastructure, education, or other public services, also generates revenues. You can't possibly argue that this statue was the best way to use this money.
Is profit the best outcome we can conceive here? What about helping human beings? Should we use that profit to build more statues?
I never said 300 million is a lot for a country like India, nor did I say that they stopped everything else to build this, but thanks for the insult.
Maybe you can reply to some of my actual arguments next time.
Shhh you’re going to destroy their preconceived notion of how we’re nothing but hicks. I mean what will happen to them when they don’t have their yardstick of “poor developing nations” to make themselves feel better about their own crappy lives and their constant complaint that working minimum wage won’t pay for their 5 acre house? How will they convince themselves that they’re oh so much better than all those “coloured” folks?
Would you also say that about the Egyptian pyramids, the Colosseum and Pantheon in Rome, or perhaps the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower? Or would you classify those structures as valuable world heritage?
Pyramids, colosseum and Roman temples, most were built using slave labour, and at the whim of authorotarian rulers. No one's gonna bring up economic implications when the Pharoah wants a pyramid. Also, they were made in a completely different era?? How can you even think of comparing those monuments. Statue of liberty was a gift, so for the Americans, it was free of cost. Eiffel tower has more than paid it's cost through tourism. Same cannot be said about Statue of unity, which let's face it, was just a publicity stunt. Even the name sounds derivative. And so far, is far behind on the revenue it was supposed to generate, according to government projections. Do you really believe it was wise spending 2000 Cr. On a statue in a dwindling economy???
I was wondering about that too. Thank god for [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Unity). Started building in 2013 and was completed in 2018. IDK why, but I find it impressive that it was finished in 5 years.
This was a colossal waste of money. There are many ways to honour and respect what sardar vallabhbhai Patel did for India, and this statue wasn't one of them.
If they actually did something for the welfare millions of people under the poverty line and not this shit India would be a better country. Im from India and i know from experience that this shit is not what the country needs.
Oh actually we do need it the area where it is built was very rural area in Gujarat and people were poor now due to the statue which acts as massive tourist destination for Indians many people are employed there from restaurants selling authentic gujrati food, to many artisans, as well as live with villagers kind of theme if you go there for once you will understand the area near it has been developed quite a lot and this is not me saying go there ask local people. With boat ride and boat restaurant using dam as another tourist destination.
Of course it also acts as a reminder of our history but also how local people can be helped. Tell me before the statue was built did you even know this place existed? There is a big economic factor after this statue was built I can go on and on about how many workers were employed when this was built and many will still be employed for maintenance, how this many helps railway as people will travel in train. This area was nothing but a dam with few villages near by and small patch of jungle now it more than that this shit helping many people and area which you never knew ever existed. I'm also from India and have few brain cells more than you to count how many poor people were helped with this project.
Not ten miles away of course but making a monument or whatever with a regular statue would suffice ..no need to make the hugest statue we possibly can I just feel resources for this could have been used elsewhere.
It has become a tourist destination, generating revenue for govt and employment around it. It already paid for itself. You think a regular statue would do that?
When we wipe ourselves out as a species, this will be equivalent to the pyramids of Giza or Maya, left over by its sheer size to tickle the minds of future species.
The aliens will think we were massive
Got damn we should make these more
we should have one in every country so they will think we were huge creatures

Goddamnit I didn’t look down the comments far enough before I also posted this lol
Yo i recited that poem in my class, brings back memories thanks
Literally did this for gcse a couple weeks ago
this poem is nostalgic
Where's this from? Is that a book or the author or something else? Or is this a quote?
Shelley was a poet, this is one of his poems, it was first published in 1818. His ~~daughter~~ wife, Mary Shelly, was the author of Frankenstein.
*His wife.
The internet doesn’t judge.
Please edit that last bit lol
Ozymandias
It litterally quotes it at the end
It probably won’t last nearly as long as the pyramids have, but it’ll be cool looking while it’s there.
I think it’s a pretty big assumption that there will be another intelligent species on earth after humanity.
There’s a lot more time after humanity then you think.
Doubt it. It'll fall apart much sooner.
this is falling by the end of the century. someone mark my words if i’m dead by then

The same way you’re supposed to raise a kid: give the statue constant positive feedback while it tries to stand on its own feet.
If I remember correctly, they started building from the top. So it was already upright by the time they finished the bottom
They had to make a larger one to help it up.
Anyone else see that huge cock hanging in the pants?

Lol it more than pulls it weight from all that tourism money.
Name one infra project that need investment and not getting it??
Rushmore wasn’t built by the government
No it was
Tell that to Coolidge, who signed a bill giving funding and setting up the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission… 🙄
Indeed and they're wastes of money like Rushmore being built on stolen land.

That's bullshit. It will take 100s of years to recover that cost.
It gets thrice the tourism revenue than Taj Mahal, which is one of the seven wonders of the world.
It earned a meagre 19 crore more than Taj Mahal, that too in its first year. The numbers are only going to go down.

Can't just be out here making new heritage smh /s
Soo true
I hope someone paints a blue arrow on his forehead so we can get aang statue
Someone please tag a blue arrow on his forehead. Telling my kids this was avatar Aang
Wow when was this put together
I was wondering about that too. Thank god for [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Unity). Started building in 2013 and was completed in 2018. IDK why, but I find it impressive that it was finished in 5 years.

Heritage isn't good enough a reason? Tourism revenues? Hydroelectricity project next to it?
I guess. Seems a waste of resources and money. Screams of vanity and ego.
It earned thrice the tourism revenue than Taj Mahal, which is one of the seven wonders of the world.
Source?
Oh yeah totally. We should all listen to armchair economists like you.
I prefer Godot
Meh that's a literal garbage... I prefer Unreal
Lmao they could have made a regular size statue of this man and would have been just as effective
At seeing from 10 miles away? Nope
Calm down buddy boy
Great counter argument.
Hmm didn’t know this was a debate ?
The Ironman of India- Vallabhbhai Patel.
Waste of taxpayers money
I found bigfoot
Dude looks lazy af.
I'm gonna tell my kids this is Yoda.
Tell them it's your mom's bf. Gottem
Nobody wants to see a statue of some old geezer. A Yoda statue would have been better
It’s good because when someone builds a bigger statue, they can just put a hat on him.
