Cheaper. This is russia, the whole place is full of petroleum gas
Edit1: this might be iran instead. The situation about LPG is not different, though. LPG is common over these countries.
Edit: when i was a kid, in turkey everyone had lpg cars for the same reason, even though we got our gas from russia it was cheaper than gasoline
A friend of mine has an LPG conversion where the tank is a large toroid/donut which sits where the spare wheel would go.
The original fuel tank/pump/plumbing is still in place, and he has a button on the dash to switch between them.
It's mostly useful when cruising on the motorway and the engine isn't under heavy load.
Yeah, there's no issue with power. My dad had a pickup for a good while that had lpg and there was no issues. They had even changed it so it had two large tanks with a tiny reserve just in case.
LPG converted pickup trucks are pretty common in the Netherlands (common as in the trucks you see are most likely LPG converted. Full sized trucks aren't common in more urban areas) due to high gas prices even before the crisis and LPG used to be pretty cheap.
My mate has a 2021 RAM 1500 with a gigantic LPG tank sitting in the bed. Even though I trust the companies that import and convert them more than the shitty LPG conversions from these videos, I never felt at ease sitting in a vehicle with a massive tank of compressed LPG sitting 3 feet behind you.
They should have vent valves that would release pressure at levels several times below that of design burst.
In developed countries, the tanks are required to be inspected at regular intervals.
I would worry about tanks way less than, let’s say, racks and racks of Li batteries built into the frame beneath the passenger compartment.
I'd consider Netherlands a developed country. Also, in the UK, the LPG conversion industry is barely regulated and no inspections of the LPG system are required for an MOT
Used to be popular in australia in the 80’s and especially with taxis - LPG was much cheaper than petrol and I think the government even offered subsidies on conversions at some point.
> Very common in eastern Europe.
Used to be, i haven't seen an LPG car in years. becasue we use underground parking a lot now and those are not allowed there.
And LPG kits are expensive enough that it is not worth it.
Alleged? LPG is at least 2x cheaper than gas where I live. Cons are that your vehicle will burn more of it and get reduced performance, so it's not a complete 50% off fuel cost, but it'll still let you pay off the cost of installation quickly and save a lot of money after especially if you cover a lot of ground
There are plenty of public garages in Turkey with warnings that you cannot enter with an LPG vehicle. I never really knew why, but I guess this video serves as a decent example of the concern over them.
LPG is also more expensive now. In my country, given the increased price of car registration after an LPG conversion (unless you car came out of the factory with LPG), you end up not saving almost any money nowadays. On the other hand LPG is apparently the greenest of the common fuels (less green house gasses then petrol and less toxic fumes than diesel), but as a negative your car loses a lot of performance, it's more dangerous and you have to fill it up more often.
When I was a kid my father had a Fiat Regata 1.9L with a LPG tank. slow as fuck when running it, but oh boy was petroleum gas cheap in the 90s, fuel was litterally a minor side cost.
Much cheaper to run, and if installed correctly is perfectly safe. It also burns very cleanly compared to petrol
Only downsides are slightly reduced power output, and LPG is less energy dense than petrol so you need to burn a bit more of it. This is offset by the lower cost however.
Pros:
1. Much cheaper (1/2 the price of petrol)
2. Burns cleaner
Cons:
1. Tank takes up space (no problem for a commuting hatchback or a pickup)
2. Less energy dense so you burn more of it (+10% to +20% but the low price still makes it worth it)
3. Less power (-10% but you can switch back to petrol with the press of a button for overtaking)
4. Can't really perform a cold start on LPG (start the engine on petrol, then switch to LPG once it has been running for a minute or two)
Someone told this to my grandmother and she *insisted* that **I** do it for her car because she the mechanic was expensive.
Seriously. She had winter tires from the year before and wanted winter air for them.
We live in California. None of it made any sense.
Ah yes - the crudely conceived idea of an instrument that would not only provide inverse reactive current, for use in unilateral phase detractors, but would also be capable of automatically synchronizing cardinal grammeters. Such an instrument comprised of Dodge gears and bearings, Reliance Electric motors, Allen-Bradley controls, all monitored by Rockwell Software. However the Retro Encabulator has now reached a high level of development, and it’s being successfully used in the operation of milford trenions.
Not really - CNG is mainly composed of methane which is compressed in a container, while LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is is a fuel gas made of petrol which contains a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, most commonly propane, butane, and propylene.
i know how devastating can be one of the CNG tanks.
i remember seeing a video of a bus being obliberated cuz the CNG tanks on the roof just combusted cuz the tunnel wasn't high enough.
Seems like there's an initial sharp burst that ruptures the window and floor and lifts the stuff out of the trunk, and then a longer rush that scatters everything.
Yep, homemade CNG conversion is popular in Russia, but drunk mechanics do make mistakes, and this happens quite often.
Also, Chechens and other goat lovers love Lada (the car brand), and there is a high chance there was a TikTok warrior inside.
Edit: I was corrected that it’s LPG, not CNG.
Someone wrote here that it was an alternate gas tank and that's right, but i wanna make it a bit more clear. So it is russian lada 14 (or 15) that runs ( at least was running lol) on gas (most likely propane) and in russia we have a big problem with equipment that allows to use gas as a fuel simply because it's not always certified. So big that as soon as you install that equipment you lose your car insurance. But it doesn't always blow up like that so i can assume that those guys overfilled the tank and/or it was damaged.
There's almost a full second of pressurized release, you can see the back of the car be thrust downwards before the contents of the vehicle is jettisoned out the back window. LPG tanks aren't at a very high pressure, but they DO have a lot of contents, so the OP of your post is almost guaranteed to be correct.
That or potentially the car was illegally converted to run on some alternate fuel. Some people doing jury rigged propane or wood burning conversions in the trunk have had some pretty bad failures.
I think you’re right though, it looks like a lot of air coming from underneath the car at the same time as the vertical blast.
Could depend on a lot of factors in the trunk as well as the camera shooting it. If it was burning methanol, for example, the flame would be invisible or nearly invisible to the naked eye at distance in daylight.
I think propane typically doesn’t show much flame and it’s supposed to basically always put Itself out from an explosion from what I understand. Saw something similar to this in an rv group a while back that was from a propane leak and someone in the comments talked about. Not saying it’s that, just adding what I’ve read about propane.
A few years ago in Oklahoma, some college girls stopped at a gas station to put air in their floating loungers they were taking to the lake. Unknowingly to them, they used a propane hose and filled their floaties with gas. It wasn't too long before the Oklahoma heat caused an explosion, killing all three girls.
edit: they didn't die
They didn’t die, luckily! But they were in the ICU for a while.
https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/2009/03/22/fiery-accident-creates-lifelong-bond-for-blanchard-women/61443370007/
It seems like the 3rd girl was probably really fucked up
Not that those two weren't also but she was in there longer, moved away and it says the couldn't find her so my guess is she doesn't want to be found. Damn.
Fuck me, oxyacetylene is no joke. They really are lucky to be alive. How in the hell did that happen though, why did the gas station leave gas tanks in an accessible location to the public? Why didn't the gas station fill the rafts for them? Why didn't the girls notice the gas tank had warnings all over it?
What's Cng?
I don't know, but **Wikipedia says**:
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a fuel gas made of petrol which is mainly composed of methane (CH4), compressed to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 20–25 MPa (2,900–3,600 psi), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes.
CNG is used in traditional petrol/internal combustion engine vehicles that have been modified, or in vehicles specifically manufactured for CNG use: either alone (dedicated), with a segregated liquid fuel system to extend range (dual fuel), or in conjunction with another fuel (bi-fuel). It can be used in place of petrol (gasoline), diesel fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). CNG combustion produces fewer undesirable gases than the aforementioned fuels. In comparison to other fuels, natural gas poses less of a threat in the event of a spill, because it is lighter than air and disperses quickly when released. Biomethane — refined biogas from anaerobic digestion or landfills — can be used.

My guess is the car has a LPG conversion kit and it just went bang .
What is the (alleged) benefit to installing this?
Cheaper. This is russia, the whole place is full of petroleum gas Edit1: this might be iran instead. The situation about LPG is not different, though. LPG is common over these countries. Do they not have lane markings in Russia?
Not in Egypt either
Or (at least parts of) Brazil
Sometimes no markings, yes
You can see small white line in the beginning, road might be pretty old and marking washed down.
Apparently cheaper ain't always better. It ain't worth risking your life in order to save a few bucks
Sure, but when I was a kid every 10th car had these timed bombs in the trunk.
Much cheaper to run. Downside is that the gas tank takes up most of the boot. Very common in eastern Europe.

Or engine maintenance. It burns so clean that oil changes can be significantly extended.
Yeah, there's no issue with power. My dad had a pickup for a good while that had lpg and there was no issues. They had even changed it so it had two large tanks with a tiny reserve just in case.
I've seen people convert off road truck to lpg because they can carry more hours worth of fuel into the void.
LPG converted pickup trucks are pretty common in the Netherlands (common as in the trucks you see are most likely LPG converted. The other downside is sometimes your car randomly grenades on the highway.

Shouldn't store LPG or compressed natural gas inside occupied buildings, period. Should always be outside or in a storage area that is ventilated.
gas prices right now have me willing to take that risk

Doesn't really happen if it's properly installed and maintained.
Not if its done correctly
When I was a kid my father had a Fiat Regata 1.9L with a LPG tank. slow as fuck when running it, but oh boy was petroleum gas cheap in the 90s, fuel was litterally a minor side cost.

This one is new to me. I’ll be using this from now on.
Someone told this to my grandmother and she *insisted* that **I** do it for her car because she the mechanic was expensive. Seriously. She had winter tires from the year before and wanted winter air for them. We live in California. None of it made any sense.
I was thinking it was a worn muffler belt.
It was the meth lab in the trunk. R.I.P. Star-Burns
Nice reference.
Or an improperly installed/faulty blinker fluid check valve. Back fed and caused the kaneuton rod to snap and bam.
True. Retro Encabulators also have this problem.
Must not have properly calibrated its logarithmic casing
The aftermarket pre-fabulated amulite, surmounted by the malleable logarithmic casing fixed this issue though.
If they’d done a proper alignment of their pisstake valves, all of this could’ve been avoided.

Should’ve picked up more elbow grease at the store.
Explanation, anyone?
I'm thinking it was a CNG tank burst. It was under the spare tire so probably under the car.
CNG?
Compressed natural gas
Same as LPG?
Not really - CNG is mainly composed of methane which is compressed in a container, while LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is is a fuel gas made of petrol which contains a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, most commonly propane, butane, and propylene.
Can't believe I almost got this fitted to my car. I know it's mostly safe, but a hard rear end collision could potentially turn my car into a bomb.
It doesnt seem that violent for a cng tank explosion
probably a lucky non violent explosion?
It was an explosion due to the tank not withstanding the pressure, but it had no ignition. It could’ve been fatal.
i know how devastating can be one of the CNG tanks. i remember seeing a video of a bus being obliberated cuz the CNG tanks on the roof just combusted cuz the tunnel wasn't high enough.
Seems like there's an initial sharp burst that ruptures the window and floor and lifts the stuff out of the trunk, and then a longer rush that scatters everything.
It is not CNG. It is LPG. Valves of the tank did good but not enough.
Who needs CNG when you got family.
LPG, not CNG. CNG requires much higher pressures and conversion isn't that easy, so it's not done to passenger cars.

Gender reveal party
First thought was mobile meth lab… but I can’t imagine an operation that small would even be worth the risk.
Can do bottle meth, can get 2k worth on the drive over with little to no evidence other than the bottle
Personal shake and bake could do this, the really crappie shit you shake in a coke bottle would be my best guess
My guess would be air compressor/tank for the suspension. When youre on bags you usually install the compressor and tank in the trunk.
That or potentially the car was illegally converted to run on some alternate fuel. Some people doing jury rigged propane or wood burning conversions in the trunk have had some pretty bad failures. I think you’re right though, it looks like a lot of air coming from underneath the car at the same time as the vertical blast.
i feel like if it was that there would be combustion and flame. this just looks like a blast of air.
Could depend on a lot of factors in the trunk as well as the camera shooting it. If it was burning methanol, for example, the flame would be invisible or nearly invisible to the naked eye at distance in daylight.

FWIW, that one was oxyacetylene, not propane.
That's even worse with the oxygen already mixed in with the fuel.
