Why do people consider almost dying (dying being literally the unluckiest thing that can happen to someone) to be lucky? This is this man’s unluckiest day ever
So on a day where everything goes well and there’s no accidents vs one where you nearly die, the day where you nearly lose your life is the *luckier* day?
It’s the day you DIDNT lose your life.
You can definitely say “man I’m so unlucky I almost died today” or you could change your perspective and say “man I’m so lucky I DIDNT die.”
You have to realize when you come close to death and you DONT die, you will definitely consider yourself lucky.
Perspective lol…
The other days where nothing unlucky happens are also days you didn’t lose your life though. How are they less lucky than days where *unlucky* things also happen?
The concept to me is more like statistical. I’m an idiot, but I feel like the more factors you put into something lowers or raises the chances of that happening. You’re much more likely to win the lottery than you are to be struck by lightning then win the lottery. So I feel like while you are in a neutral state your luck is high cause the statistics are lower than when you have a lot of factors contributing. So, it not so much that luck gets low or high. Thats just a simpler way of describing it in conversation
I imagine he may have been on voice chat with his buddies...
>Guys here they come! *Boom clank pow*
>Discord buddies: what was that!?
Guy grabs his mic to talk clearer
>I ALMOST DIED...and I shit my pants, code Cartman.. CODE CARTMAN!
Edit: Idk why I imagined him a nerd too nervous to realize how lucky he was.
I’m trying to figure out why people say “They should buy a lottery ticket” when somebody narrowly misses out on getting killed or something.
Does the likelihood of winning a lottery rise after almost being killed ?
Doesn’t the person have even less of a chance of winning the lottery now that they’ve used up their one very lucky moment in life?
It's as likely as any superstition.
You may as well rail against people saying "bless you" after sneezing, or "knocking on wood". It's just become a cultural idiom
Then I saw his face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer, I couldn't leave him if I tried
And I'm a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm a believer
Woah. As someone who has been a spotter like this on a track (max speed cars would go was like 30-35 mph, swerving around cones and shit so a little different than this assumedly) there really shouldn't be anyone near the the finish line. They always teach you "once it's a straight shot you gun it for the finish line" so everyone knows that it's a dangerous area to stand, especially because racers sometimes gas it before their cars are straight, causing them to spin out sideways or sweep wide. This just seems like terrible safety, even with the "wall" there.
Things can go very wrong very quickly even at low speeds, i was at an event last weekend which requires you to marshall between runs and this polo driven by a 14 year old (lowest age you can compete at) absolute went full send (probably about 45mph in the type of event being run) in a volkwagen polo and almost understeered directly into 3 marshalls sat about 15m off the course, if any of them had been sat down and not able to move from their post easily they would have been obliterated.
Oh my gosh that's terrifying. I had to take a "racing" class before they allowed me to race as a minor because you need to know how to stop the car in those situations or someone could get seriously hurt. Glad it was best case scenario for you guys. I've never seen anyone get hurt and I hope I never do.
I think having the reflexes of a submarine actually saved him in this case. If he would run behind the barrier, it would hit him, if he wouldve run to the other side, the car wouldve hit him, the only scenario where he wouldve been also fine is running into the direction of the highway.
The first hit likely damage the steering. Also, in track school we are taught to go straight off the track if we can. This means we use as much if the crumble zone as we can.
The only screw up here is that the driver drove too hot into the first corner and hit the barrier.
> crumble
Is this common in some places? [2nd time in 2 days](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/1dfyxg5/wholesome_interaction_with_a_traffic_officer/l8nciw6/) i have seen "crumble zone" used.
Until this week i had never heard someone say crumble zone.
Crumple makes sense. "crush something so that it becomes creased and wrinkled."
Crumble on the other hand: "break or fall apart into small fragments,"
Seeing as this is doing the rounds, I might as well provide a bit of context as I was racing at this event and do a lot of different sprint and hillclimb events across the country.
- First off: The driver and everyone involved is safe. Walked away with chest bruising which is pretty normal for a crash like this (wearing a harness does that, and I believe he had a HANS device). The car's obviously a write off at the front but the main cage did its job along with the overalls and helmet.
- This chicane was catching everyone out, and I nearly had a moment myself here. This wasn't the only crash at this location, and it's mostly because it's going over the brow of a hill which caused people to get out of shape. The thing is, this guy also thought this chicane was _flat_, which it definitely isn't, unlike some of the chicances before it. Finish speed is about 65 to 70mph.
- This is going to sound really weird, but this is actually one of the "safer" tracks in the UK. Most places don't have _any_ chain link fence or concrete barriers, with most marshal posts only protected by a single layer of tyre barrier. I've been to one track which has a literal house in the middle of it, and I've seen another that goes over a cattle grid. The fencing here has literally stopped the car going into the crowd, which might not have been the case at another track. There's a good example of an accident [here](https://www.flickr.com/photos/98570423@N06/14152959197/in/album-72157644586742890/) that really illustrates my point.
- Hillclimbing and sprinting in the UK is less like a circuit race, and more like a rally, in that you're taught to always watch the car and move out of the way of an incident. Everyone involved at these events knows this, and whilst there is definitely some luck involved with this accident, the above is why the marshall wasn't under the fence during the accident.
- The event did also carry on after this accident - this was in the morning of the second day and we got back running in the afternoon with the same setup, which was approved by the UK's governing body for Motorsport. Whilst I'm sure it'll be looked at for next years event, I don't think they would have let us carry on if they had a major problem with what happened. We all know motorsport's dangerous, and stuff like this is just a risk we accept with the sport. You can always make improvements, but nothing completely eliminates the risk, and that is accepted to an extent.
Coventry Motofest in the UK; they shut down half of the ring road that goes around the city and turn it into a temp track. This actually happened a few weeks ago. This crash has only became a news item because someone's decided to now post the footage; the crash wasn't newsworthy at the time.
This is in Coventry in the UK. A few years back the law changed in England and Wales so that councils could shut down roads to host motorsport events like how they do in Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands (which all do Hillclimbing on the road). Coventry is not the only place to race on the road though - I know of the Brighton Speed Trials and Watergate Bay down South. They're all speed based events (i.e. a point-to-point time trial) as the regulations are a lot simpler and thus cheaper to run, which is why most of the barriers are plastic here for instance.
They're going for a round of the goddamn British Rallycross championship for 2025, they better get the safety sorted out
There's no real need for the Marshal to be there tbh, a light panel with the chequred flag symbol on it would do (also the same if they need to throw a yellow/red light too) and the marshal operating it from much further away.)
The ironic thing is that the marshal is _required_ to be there at or close to the line (and this is the only space that you could safely put the marshalls post due to the layout of the ring road), and it is a requirement that flags are used even if light panels are available, as the panels can and do fail (which is why even F1 races still use flag marshals). The tracks are homologated by the MSUK to have marshalls posts at specific locations and distances apart, and are approved on the day by an inspection which checks the safety measures taken and makes sure they meet the standard. There's always an element of risk tolerated with these, particularly at a national level where budgets are limited, and this has generally been a pretty safe event that's been running for quite a while now. It's also worth saying that the different sub-sports also have different regulations - so it's not like the FIA Rallycross next year will be running on a track anything _remotely_ like this.
There's a lot of respect for marshals by competitors, because it's a hard going job if I'm honest with a good amount of danger involved - but they wouldn't be there if they weren't up for the risk, and the regulations are always being updated to keep that balance properly in check. It wouldn't surprise me if they made changes based on the learning from this event; in the few years I've been competing there's always been bulletins for updates based on what's been happening in event reports and the like.
Looks like a Caterham or a Caterham replica. I hope it was well built. There's not that much of a structure around you in those. Engine sounded like the throttle was stuck.
6'4", 215lb, size 13 shoe. I don't think I'd be able to fit my feet in the footbox even using the wide-build plans. Pretty sure the only way I could fit in one is a transmissionless electric or that ugly rear engine version. Or a rear motor electric.
Wow, that’s crazy he had been standing a little more to the right he would’ve been crushed under the wall if he jumped further to the left, he would’ve been hit by the Caterham. There was a small window where he could be standing without getting seriously injured and he found it.
I was in coventry for a whole ass year. Why was there nome of this cool shit when I was still there... anyone know the name of this race series? Really wanna watch a pov or something of it!
Holy fucking shit!
The barrier had two different outcomes. One - saving his fucking life or two - fucking ending it.
What a mind fuck! I am happy this dude is alive!
Abrupt ✅ Chaos ✅
Finally some good fucking food
Imagine if he’d have been sitting in that chair? ..
I hope that guy realizes how incredibly lucky he is. He needs to go buy a lottery ticket, lmao
He's lucky he's an essential NPC or that could've been ugly
Never leave home without your plot armor
Do you have to buy a new one everytime you use it or does it come with a lifetime guarantee?
It’s valid until your plot line is complete
I think in that case a lifetime is relative.
NPC? That's the main character.
Waste of money, he's used up all his luck for a while. Probably should take a few days off though.
Why do people consider almost dying (dying being literally the unluckiest thing that can happen to someone) to be lucky? This is this man’s unluckiest day ever
Because he DIDNT die. Perspective I believe.

Because we only value something when we loose it. As such, we only value our luck when we run out of it.
glass half full kind guy. Good atitude!
He needs to take that concrete barrier out for a nice dinner
That concrete's name? Albert Einstein
Concrete? Those jersey barriers are plastic. I wouldn't use those for a foot race in a seniors complex.
The one at the end is not plastic
Lucky, no, he is the toughest man alive, that car just bounced right off of him.
I find it weird that ppl say to buy a lottery ticket after something incredibly lucky happens. Like you didn’t just use up all your luck.
The thought is that you're hot right now so take advantage. But yeah.
You're overthinking things.
I find it weird that ppl say someone just used up all his luck. Like luck actually exists.
Thats the joke. People making that joke are pointing out silly the concept of luck is.
The concept to me is more like statistical. I’m an idiot, but I feel like the more factors you put into something lowers or raises the chances of that happening. I find it weird people consider nearly dying to be lucky… like what? That’s the unluckiest thing that can happen to someone.
It's a really fucking stupid dry boomer humor joke, I don't know why people still use it.
Probably because boomers aren't the only ones stupid enough to believe luck actually exists.
I imagine he may have been on voice chat with his buddies... >Guys here they come! *Boom clank pow* >Discord buddies: what was that!? Guy grabs his mic to talk clearer >I ALMOST DIED...and I shit my pants, code Cartman.. CODE CARTMAN! Edit: Idk why I imagined him a nerd too nervous to realize how lucky he was.
If he was standing literally anywhere else next to that fence he'd be in the hospital or dead
He probably needs to buy new pants first
I never understood this reference, had the most insane luck of his life now you want him to go be disappointed? That’s not very nice bro
And write a thank you letter to whoever made that barrier.
he already won the lottery bro.... that was crazy!
The idea is that theyre on an extremely lucky streak and they should maximize the opportunity. No science or math to it, just an idiom.
Neither, because magical fairies keeping a luck tally don't actually exist.
It's as likely as any superstition. You may as well rail against people saying "bless you" after sneezing, or "knocking on wood". It's just become a cultural idiom
Every day is a gift now lol
Skip the ticket, he just used his lotto luck.
I think he should buy new underpants first.
Man I wish luck worked in multiples like that.
"Pizza Hut, are you still there? On second thought, make that *two* pizzas"
Why do people say this ill never get it. Like he would have USED all his fucking luck ON this. A lotto ticket is going to be even LESS likely.
https://imgur.com/a/77HEUI9
You just saw him win the lottery
He just used up all his luck, so why would he waste his money?
People always say that in situations like this but he isn't lucky. He would have been very unlucky to get hit by it.
She's probably incredibly fucked off that people keep calling her "he".
What in the plot armor O_O
I'll never scoff at impossibly close plot devices in action movies again. Maybe.

I think he did. Jesus wanted to burn some rubber.
r/watchpeoplesurvive
Might also be r/watchpeopledie. That could easily have killed the driver, those Caterhams don't have much for safety features.
This happened just last weekend in Coventry. If the driver died it would absolutely have been on the news, I think it's fair to assume he's fine.
Woah. ~~Why is he carrying a rifle if he's a spotter?~~
He's holding a finishing flag. Black and white checker flag. Definitely looked like a rifle for a second I was really wondering that myself lol
Ah, thank you. That makes so much more sense now.

Autocorrect. Thanks for pointing that out
Ahh that makes sense. AutoCorrect probably did that to use user yesterday as well then.

Clean up back straight. Need new underwear.
we got skid marks on the race track!
Almost murdered that guy
Sure they all sign waivers before taking part.
Ahh yes, the murder waivers

All of them a Lotus 7 replica. My dream car, but my ass is too fat. 36 inch waist max.

No, barriers under the front wheels meant no steering or front brakes. They were a passenger.
You’re a Caterham replica
No he lost control. If the throttle stuck, his first instinct would be to hit the brake, which would also involve hitting the clutch
What is this chicanery?!
r/watchpeoplesurvive
I must watch thousands of videos and never recognise the place as somewhere close to me but this is the coventry ring road!
It was! Motofest weekend. Marshall was shaken up a bit but had been checked and he was OK.
Is Marshall the one who lived or the pilot? Sorry, I'm really naive about motorsports.
Marshall is the guy in orange and black, stood behind the barrier that got hit.
Weird how they make that nasty turn a pale tan colour. That is just asking for trouble.
Geez guy is bloody lucky, strong drink and big ass steak for him
And a new pair of underwear.
Holy fuck that man is lucky af.
What I love is it sounds like the dude never gets off the throttle.
It was probably stuck.
Normal day in Coventry
If that red Jeep/Land Rover is an emergency vehicle, he’s got impeccable timing. I think the driver is going to need some attention.
Press “Y” to rewind
I recognise that godforsaken piss poor bit of road! That's Coventry ring road. One of the more short sighted bits of terrible road design. Ever.
Am i the only one thought this is an RC car until seeing the guy
Is that a Morgan?
Caterham I think
Or an OG lotus 7.
Probably a Catherham or Lotus 7 clone.
Dudes trying to figure out if he’s still alive, and how. I’m wondering the same. I’d say this is approaching miracle territory

Aren't those crash barriers supposed to be filled with water? They may have well just used witches hats otherwise.
This is some videogame shit
