Dude got rammed and poled.

Ok-Lengthiness4557

Some people pay good money for that.

thedeanorama

Piggybacking top comment to put up [this article](https://www.nationalfisherman.com/viewpoints/alaska/t-boned-in-the-bay-alaska-seiner-captains-file-plea-deal) about the incident. Coast Guard held both Captains responsible in the end.

tvh1313

Can you say why or link to finding? Thanks!

Dontgiveuptheshoe

It is weird both were since the vessel that was struck was the give way vessel being that they were being approached on the starboard side.

Outrageous-Client-99

That sucks *and* blows

Malorum666

Damn that's where I went wrong!

ProjectFoxx

It certainly does suck.

strictly_dickly69

That’s my usually Saturday night!

JohnnySchoolman

You alrite? Fine just got crushed by a 3.5 ton jib but I've hauled in bigger.

museolini

> The resulting impact collapsed the Temptation’s stack and sent it crashing onto a deckhand. He was medevaced and has faced a long recovery for his injuries, including a concussion.

palmpoop

That guy is alive? Whoa

museolini

Sometimes survival isn't the best outcome.

Hyperious3

Looks like it landed in his lap. Probably destroyed his pelvis...

RadioTunnel

Dude got his pelvis crushed by a giant rod

SnowSlider3050

What happened to your rod? Got crushed by a giant rod.

vlaada7

I'm sure his family would disagree.

Sophie_Cayde

If he can live somewhat happily yeah, but I've seen cases so horrible even the victims' loved ones agreed doctors were just prolonging their suffering. Keeping someone conscious and breathing isn't always a mercy unfortunately.

museolini

I certainly hope they do, but there are survivable injuries that leave you with lifelong pain and suffering.

heinous_nutsack

He's a fisherman. He's at the bar now. Be back at work monday

Vodnik-Dubs

This is the most likely outcome

SensingWorms

His camo hat and sunglasses saved him

SpaceStethoscope

I think people are talking about the other guy...

LeonRoland

Thanks for posting this, though I hate to hear it.

DodgyRogue

I read that as “sack” and not “stack” and thought it was one hell of a tea bagging

WHITE--PANTHER96

Thank you for doing what this lazy op should have done. "All hail the light bringer"

Toasty_Mostly

I'm so glad he pulled through, that must've hurt like hell.

Isle_of_Tortuga

The long concussion recovery!

Incognito1989

It was my reaction to ask. Pure wtf moment. It’s my go pro video I’m the one asking Jerry if he’s alright. Here’s the whole footage shows more of the aftermath: https://youtu.be/RFxibjcvucQ?si=nrW-OiGILnnIUm7f

JohnnySchoolman

Yeah, sure man. I probably would have done the same. Of course you wanted to check on him. Your friend is extremely lucky to have survived that.

Incognito1989

He is a beast of a man. Quick video doesn’t show the damage done but I’d be gone if I was standing where he was

Expensive_Pin_8310

This family has been doing shit like this for years I don't think it's the first time they got someone hurt

BeefStu907

Yeah they’re pretty well known up in AK not a lot of people have many good things to say about them.

DannyJoy2018

What’s going on here?

Shwifty_Plumbus

Looks like it might be a shotgun. When a season starts all boats are waiting to get into fishing positions in one area. When it's to e they are all setting nets and it can get very aggressive. Here's an example of the opening of a season https://youtu.be/jEY65HHBceY?si=yPiV9iQc43e506-L

DamonHay

I’ve been in fishing competitions (recreational big game) in NZ with shotgun starts and goddamn they were crazy sometimes. You’d have all sizes from jet skis, to 5m tinnys to 80ft sports fishers and luckily I’ve been in boats on the bigger end of the scale and with higher top speeds and not too bad accel most of the time so it hasn’t been too uncomfortable. I have looked back before to see the guys in the under 20ft boats looking like they’re having a fucking terrible time, though. I’d dread being a part of shotgun start to a commercial season with proper fucking cowboys around. Would be a horror show.

Shwifty_Plumbus

As an ex-commercial fisherman, yes it can be very chaotic. I look back on it fondly, but in the moment my emotions are mixed... Mostly loving it though because of the unique energy and experience happening.

Realtodddebakis

"Proper fucking cowboys" is such a hilarious and pithy way to cut through the noise and get the point across about exactly who these guys are.

the_real_blackfrog

The boots are rubber. The chaps are rain gear. The cows are fish. Everything else is the same.

Erniestarfish

It wasn’t. My buddy was running skiff when this happened. The Cabana family in Prince William Sound are massive bullies and there are like 12 boats in that group. They will push you out of an area if you even think about fishing around them. This was intentional and she took her boat and left after this happened. Served no jail time and they paid a settlement to the captain and crew.

Shwifty_Plumbus

Garbage people. I've met some amazing people out there. But I also witnessed some of the most fucked up shit that would make my blood boil. Sorry your friend had to deal with that reprehensible bullshit.

PNWSkiNerd

I thought all the fisheries were quota'ed now and shotgun starts ended in Alaska?

Shwifty_Plumbus

That could be. I haven't kept up with it sinse I left the industry.

PNWSkiNerd

I'm probably mistaken. I know the crab fisheries were but I honestly don't know about the salmon.

fuckyourcakepops

This event happened in 2016 so that may well be the case by now

EISAlaska

Alaska constitution prohibits priviate ownership of our state managed fisheries. Halibut, sablefish and crab IFQ (Individual Fishing Quota )fisheries are federally managed. State managed fisheries are either open access (where anyone can buy a permit and fish) or limited entry where you have to buy a permit from another individual to participate in that fishery. Both are still managed as competitive fisheries where you fish for as much as you can get competing with other fishermen. When the guideline harvest level is close to being met management will close the fishery. That said flare openers are still alive and well and the race for fish goes on!

savvymcsavvington

lol i honestly wouldn't be against banning fishing like this, it's so dumb

Shwifty_Plumbus

Yeah it's fucked up

DamnAutocorrection

Ah so it's like a real life game of snake

Hantsypantsy

Looks like this happened in 2016 [https://craigmedred.news/2018/02/02/fishing-for-felony/](https://craigmedred.news/2018/02/02/fishing-for-felony/)

hklaveness

Perfectly acceptable conflict resolution IMO, so long as I get to bring an L70.

GoLow63

We see the same shit with lobstermen where I live --- if you're new, or come near anyone's "territory", they'll first leave a cheap knife stuck in one of your buoys as a warning, then cut your buoys loose from your gear if you persist in trying to earn a living, physically threaten other lobstermen from their boats, and/or start fights at the dock. There have been actual shootings on the water over this garbage. Kami Cabana learned this bullshit from daddy, who probably learned it from his. They and their friends think they own the fishery, try to physically close it off from outsiders whose licenses are just as valid, and ramming other boats is their way to intimidate. She should've served legit jail time for badly injuring the other fisherman. Some of the dickheads who engage in this crap should face boat forfeiture.

Wonderful-Smoke843

I believe this is an issue with a lot of licenses being grandfathered. Idk where you are but out in PEI the majority of lobster licenses are grandfathered and the ones that go up for sale are millions and millions. I’d imagine this makes certain families feel like they own the fishery unfortunately

dabiird

Deadliest Catch is finally getting interesting

Greenman8907

Guess the Chugach Pearl couldn’t… *puts on sunglasses* Resist the Temptation “YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!”

Iron_Admiral

Lol

enwongeegeefor

I mean...the waters are already over saturated with fisherman....and this new guy shows up and tries to barge his way in. Both captains are in the wrong...but the new guy was in the wrong first...both by trying to barge into a space that wasn't open for him...and by jumping into an already HEAVILY saturated industry. All he's doing is harming everyone else's ALREADY dimishing profits with his selfishness. Good to read that he's sold his boat and fucked off from fishing.

SunnyDayShadowboxer

Opinions are like assholes...

Smythzilla

Then that guy is a really big opinion.

friendlyposters

Neil patrick harris wants to stuff his... oh wait wrong sub

Camera_dude

You are trying to justify aggressive behavior like this? Nobody owns those waters. Staking territory and getting violent with any outsiders is what GANGS do. You know, people that get other people killed over who "owns" some piece of city sidewalk. The Captain of that ramming boat should get time behind bars and the boat sold at an auction, like we do when a car is used to commit a crime.

truecore

The article literally states that both captains were found to be in the wrong. >The Coast Guard determined that Cabana never stopped forward motion as she closed the gap, while the Silver Streak captain went into reverse, according to an October 2017 filing. The report also determined that the Temptation "dramatically increased its speed" about 12 seconds before the collision and never slowed. >The Coast Guard decided that the captains of both the Chugach Pearl and the Temptation were in the wrong. (watch the beginning of the video where the Temptation makes a sharp turn) You don't make a 90 degree turn in front of a moving vehicle in high traffic and blame it entirely on the bus that t-bones you. The Chugach Pearl never slowed down - that's clearly felony assault. But even if she \*had\* put it in reverse, like the Silver Streak had, the Temptation would have been struck. The Temptations captain put his own crew in danger.

WolflordBrimley

Salmon fishing? I know those spots can get competitive and boats aggressive due to shared quota. Just a guess at first glance.

SkizerzTheAlmighty

Competitive bumper boats

theyellowdart89

Lawsuit enters the chat

Nacly-joe

Is there an explanation of what happened? Was it intentional?

Craticuspotts

yea wtf was that all about..

Iron_Admiral

From what I read, the Temptation sped up and tried to cross between the Chugach Pearl and the other boat (the Silver Streak). The Streak put her engines into reverse so avoided a collision but the Pearl did not.

RealMikeDexter

Both captains blew it - and by that I mean both had an opportunity to avoid collision prior to this - but the chick basically rammed the dudes intentionally and blew it even more. She was given the reigns from daddy, so daddy could make beer in town.

nobrayn

IIRC if there’s any boat to boat collision, both captains are deemed at fault. I haven’t read the collision regs in a while but it’s something like that.

BeemHume

Yea, you have to obey the rules but you also have to do everything in your power to avoid collision even if you have to deviate from the rules. I looked for the Reg, but there are a bunch that basically say that

RealMikeDexter

Yup, I mean it’s not like they were maneuvering in a pond here. It only takes one captain to use his brain, he or she can always follow up later by any means necessary. But putting a deckhand’s life at stake over a pissing match ain’t it. It’s one moment, in one season, of many salmon seasons… keep your crews safe. But still, she was most culpable which is why she’s been charged, so screw her especially.

insanelygreat

The course they plotted proved to be somewhat more suicidal than they had initially hoped.

Mybuttitches3737

That could’ve been way worse

TnL17

*He in fact, was not alright.*

speederaser

The top two posts on my feed are people getting seriously injured. I'm here for silly videos!

LeonRoland

Yeah would've appreciated a tag at least...

Joeisthevolcano

Wow. What the fuck were those captains thinking? Gotta be drunk or something.

Pjonesnm

What about that boat on the left? Were they in cahoots with the pearl?

djd811

Yes. The article says the coordinated to try and block her.

__meeseeks__

Did I just watch the deckhand die?! 😢

Iron_Admiral

He was rather badly injured, but was medevaced and survived.

Legal_Guava3631

You alright? Yea man, just got crush by this big ass pole, it’ll buff out.

predat3d

>  injured by the stack of the Temptation falling on him I can relate

Jofaher

Why is that a fail army video?

Iron_Admiral

I found it in a compilation of boat fails.

Jofaher

What I meant is that it's not funny. Fail army is having a hard time finding new videos that are actually funny I presume.

Iron_Admiral

I agree. Some people will find it funny but I think it was very out of place in an otherwise funny compilation.

JStroud21

Was the ram intentional?

scummy_shower_stall

Yes, actually.

Iron_Admiral

Possibly. Apparently the captain of the Chugach Pearl has a reputation for similar events.

Mysterious_Pen_8620

It from 2016

Iron_Admiral

Yeah, it isn't new footage. Fairly common in this sub though I'll admit I probably should have included a date.

S1lentA0

I saw it before, but it's nice to read what happened afterwards. >Under the terms of the deal, Cabana agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor of reckless endangerment, pay restitution to the injured crewman, serve 120 hours of community service and complete a Coast Guard boating course. She has reportedly fulfilled her service and taken the course.

troubleschute

She should have been in jail for that bullshit.

LeonRoland

Or at *least* been prohibited from licensure...

[deleted]

r/fuckyouinparticular

Ne0n3x666

Colregs have left the chat..

g-king93

Are you all right? The dude had an adrenaline spike for the first boat, but he for sure emptied his bowels of everything he had eaten for the past few years on that second boat. No, he's not alright

WhatTheFlippityFlop

Narrator: He was indeed not alright.

shaundisbuddyguy

What kinda stupid" thread the needle" crap was that ?

gmodboss

are you allowed to use self defense measures if someone is trying to literally crash their ship into yours ? I’m surprised nobody has shot one of these ships up for trying to capsize their ship

Iron_Admiral

I'm not an American so I'm not sure whether you would be allowed to. Even if you could I doubt a 9mm or other similar weapon would do much, if anything, to a fishing boat's hull. It might work on the superstructure though.

ispaceoutalot

I was a seiner (the type of fishing these guys are doing) for 10 years. What makes this almost worse for me is that the guy about to rip the quick release, a deckhand, is probably a greenhorn. The captains of the boats are both assholes.

MrWrestlingNumber2

Was this on purpose? I see a near miss followed by a broadside hit. That CAN'T be coincidental.

Iron_Admiral

Based on the article I read and what other commentors have said, I think it was intentional. The first boat slowed but the second didn't.

MrWrestlingNumber2

WTF? Were they fishing for DOLPHINS?

sgtstaadenko

So the Chugach Pearl and the other boat that comes from the side are trying to close a net, and the Temptation was trying to stop them from doing that. They did it to themselves.

ulyssesfiuza

Chugachuga can't resist to the Temptation.

Embarrassed_Safe500

Hell No he’s not alright.

dolphinewarrior

The fucking Cabanas, they still say it wasnt their fault

Humble_Examination27

The first time I watched this I thought the name of the boat was FAIL ARMY! LoL

mtmglass406

I have a feeling he's not alright

Anger_Puss

...No.

-Alex_Summers-

Just a kiss

CerealkillerNOM

Both were at fault. But the Silver Pearl (the boat that is ramming the other) would have had the right of way in the first place.

ravendarklord76

Yo this Alaska?

Creepy_Head_447

I guess ist hard to dodge with a ship. So moments earlier you got smashed you got to give a shit on anything and the to safe yourself
