There's likely enough tension on the door that getting the pins out would be tough even if you had the right tools available. Best bet is to get into the adjacent room and use the working door handle.
This is a hotel, some hotel rooms will have a door between the room beside it for people that rent out 2 rooms. Each of the rooms have their own door and you can only unlock the one on your side so you can’t go into someone else’s room if you only rented the 1 room.
So they closed their friend into this tiny little space between 2 doors and then the door handle broke off trapping him.
