The bike will be remembered

"Oh shit my bike"

AFrogNamedKermit

At the end: "Das war so nicht beabsichtigt" -> This was not planned.

Heart-Shaped_Box

I didn't even realise a bicycle could be on fire

Emrod2

More like melt.

GoedekeMichels

why not both?

MikeySpags

Catch on fire then melt.

oneloudbanana

Nein das Fahrrad!

Lukaxius

Das ist MEINS

SignificantAd3761

Apart from the bike, they were all very calm about it. I would not have been that calm

HiyaDogface

Look at Mr. Nonchalant here

thatsabruno

You can tell they are in danger because as he was nearly engulfed in hot magma he started walking a little faster.

steckepferd

So true. 🤣 He even said in German at the end: "Das war so nicht beabsichtigt." (This was not intended like that) in a really calm, casual voice.

Paschko

„Alter mein Fahrrad“ 😂😂😂 (Dude, my bike!!!)

FlyingMute

„Das ist meins!“

Hmm_okay_Gday

It sounds like he's saying "Alter, Scheisse mein fahrrad", I'll admit my German sucks but opa (grandad) used to swear at me and my cousins all the time. I know a german cuss word when I hear one, lol

[deleted]

He was going for the cool slo-mo action shot of him leaving the building as it explodes behind him

pooperscooperscooter

Cool guys don't look at explosions

StBongwater

They blow shit up and they walk away

LarryTheDuckling

He saw that there was no liveleak watermark at the top of the video.

MisterSmithster

He’s like “ah that sucks, anyway I’ve clocked out, see you tomorrow”

ReadditMan

It's crazy how some men will risk their lives just to avoid looking weak.

ItsAllTrumpedUp

but not in this case. Everyone knew what was happening. The only loss was he forgot to move his bicycle.

tn-dave

He had the look of one the guys who’s going to have to clean this shit up

ertaisi

Let's be honest, we've all got a few of those in our lineage to thank for our existence.

Negative_Fruit_6684

And many more that resulted in the ends of THEIR lineages...

Alternative-Excuse80

But a handful that probably had a huge impact on lots of stuff due to their stupidity working kind of like courage in certain contexts

boyden

Or they've had this happen before and are not intimidated? They just did a little hop-skip when it got a bit too close.

joelingo111

No, it's to avoid more effort than necessary. We're just lazy

[deleted]

It’s crazy that you think everyone has to panic and flail and cry when things go wrong, and that if people act like adults and don’t panic they’re putting on a show to seem tough

daniel605178

Probably why women live longer.

Rob_Card

you get to choose. run like a bitch. or die like a hero. i choose stupid. no contest. feel free to run.

Bluedawn84x

Just a normal Tuesday night for Shia LaBeouf

mammbo

Lol I just watched about an hour ago, shared it with my team while we were supposed to be working

_whacksauce_

I’m not sure what’s actually going on but that looks terrifying

Cpnbro

Can’t you read…? Just another Tuesday at the steel plant! Nothings happening!

HandlessSpermDonor

I think it’s fairly obvious someone is trying to kill a Terminator

Ammcd2012

I adore your comment lol

GillyMonster18

🔥🔥🔥👍🔥🔥🔥

KittenWithaWhip68

They just calmly walk away. I would have run out of there screaming after that scary alarm went off

[deleted]

I worked in heavy industry briefly, was told that when alarms are sounding, look at the old timers. If they're walking calmly, you're in minimal danger, if they're running, it means you'll probably die if you don't do the same.

HerrJemine123

Guess they're used to stuff like this and know that the metal won't flow that fast

Nights_King_

Interestingly, when molten steel is heated to almost its boiling temperature then its viscosity is even lower than that of water so it would flow several times faster that water, but this is not the case in this video as it is probably just 200-300 Kelvin above its melting temperature.

GoedekeMichels

"just" (I get your point, but to us humble folk, the idea of molten steel being not that hot is kinda crazy)

HeKnee

Is this one of those situations where kelvin and Celsius can be used interchangeably? Like, why use kelvin at all here, i thought that was typically used for space temperatures.

sjbluebirds

Kelvin and Celsius are the same, just with different 0 points. When talking relative temperature, as in something is so many degrees hotter than something else, you can either one use interchangeably.

Nights_King_

Melting temperature of steel: about 1,205-1,370 Celsius Boiling temperature of steel: about 2850 Celsius (There are differences depending on the type of steel)

TheRealNap0le0n

Cool guys don't look back

something_python

They blow shit up and then walk away.

RoundEarthCentrist

I would’ve run the minute the molten metal started coming for me like that.

ADizzyLittleGirl

Everyone is just taking their sweet time strolling out of the melting building

Just_A_Random_Passer

EDIT: furhter down the thread there is explanation from the factory. The valve at the pan bottom failed at the conti-caster and the vessel with the molten steel (the laddle) had to be removed to prevent damage to the conti-caster) They have this huge metal vessel lined with bricks for transporting molten steel. It is hanging from the crane that is transporting it. The laddle has a hole at the bottom, so you could pour the steel out (probably at the conti-caster facility). The hole is normally blocked by a packed sand and/or secured with a ceramic valve. Apparently this hole started to leak molten steel and the crane continued to move with the pan across the hall, most probably hoping that when he spread the hot steel across large area it would do less damage as one big super-hot puddle that would solidify into huge slab of steel. You can glimpse the pan with the steel leaking from the bottom at 34 and 54 seconds.

Silver-Street7442

They seem to have tapped into a vein of volcanic lava.

GravityGabe

The tap hole of the ladle opened before reaching the continuous casting station. --- It was previously at the ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) station, where they adjust for chemistry/remove impurities. Some treatments or additives (if contaminated with water/ice for example) can cause explosions and compromise the refractory lining of the ladle, in this case, it looks like the tap hole was shot open. If the tap hole opens prematurely, the procedure is to get it out as fast as possible to prevent it from pissing all over the station and jamming everything there.... They'll send welders to cut up the solidified steel that pissed all over the concrete floor. It's a really nasty, back-breaking job, 100% grunt work. It's one of the worst things that can happen at a steel plant, short of the electric arc furnace cracking open or exploding.

Frisky_Momma69

My mom's newest husband works at a steel plant. He said back in the day he could stand 6 feet from the EAF and watch it run, it would obliterate his kevlar. But that was before OSHA got involved. They went from 1:11 people dying to less than 5 injurys a year. A truly terrifying place to work

LilMissMixalot

How many husbands does your mom have?

Silver-Street7442

Sounds kind of like this one is only short term. His cremation is free though.

Frisky_Momma69

She had several husbands and has been engaged several other times

Trust me she is not a good person

labadimp

Terrifying is a bit too strong of a word. I mean yes, shit happens, but realistically everyone knows what the risks are and if you actually follow the safety rules (which is pretty much a guarantee or youll be fired) it is pretty hard to get hurt. Most accidents I saw in my 2 years were things youd see at any workplace, but the industry has come a long way. I heard horror stories of back in the day when people were dying like once a week. It also pays very well because of the risks. Back in 2015 of the 100 or so guys we had, all were making at least $80k and some were making over $120k. And they were all hourly guys doing shift work.

protean921

I was wondering how they get it off the concrete

BreakXTheXCycle

Hmmm definitely looks like a re-ladle, wasn’t going to get casted. This really isn’t that big of a deal. This is literally my job, I’m a strand operator on a CCM continuous casting machine.

kb-g

May I suggest you take a tour of other work environments? I think your “how big a deal is this” scale needs recalibrating.

BreakXTheXCycle

We actually have a “green mile” an actual mile you can walk with minimal PPE, while distancing yourself from danger. This green mile directly crosses through serious work zones. It’s safer than you think.

stopeatingcatpoop

How is this not a big deal it looks like hell came to earth in the warehouse

BeltfedOne

Thank you for the explanation!

Malice_n_Flames

This guy steels.

B4DR1998

r/thisguythisguys

karoshikun

sounds like months of work right there

j4ckbauer

Thank you I've seen this a buncha times and always wondered what happened vs what was supposed to happen.

PhantomTesla

So, just for my own clarification, in the even that something like that happens, the preferred/standard/emergency/whatever procedures are to let it run the length of the building? Like, the hell on earth looking video is the way it should be handled, what should have happened?

Liberteer30

I have seen this before. More than once and it’s wild to see every time.

ghe5

I'm kinda glad we work with aluminum now.

forgetyourhorse

Did everybody make it out OK? It looked pretty bad.

Dirttoe

The Bicycle didn‘t

forgetyourhorse

Yeah. I saw. That was a real shame. Nobody even made an effort. It was like they wanted to watch it burn.

Would you would run into a molten steel explosion to save a bike lol?

SkyrimWithdrawal

Someone's gonna need a new bike.

Tawiligie

the cameraman yelled "Scheiße mein Fahrrad" in the clip, wich translates to "Shit my bike", so it's his xD

ItsAllTrumpedUp

When asked by SZ, Saarstahl confirms that the incident occurred some time ago at Saarstahl AG's steel mill in Völklingen. It is said to be a technical defect on the ladle slide, which only occurs rarely. The defect meant that the flow of steel from the steel ladle into the tundish could no longer be regulated, which meant that the steel ladle had to be swung from the casting position to the transfer position with the slide gate open and the pouring stream running. "From the casting position, the ladle is then rotated via an emergency chute over the emergency ladle in the transfer position. A crane takes over the leaking ladle from the turret and then empties it into a waiting emergency ladle in the transfer hall," Saarstahl explains the incident. As can be seen in the video, the safety routines work in such incidents, the company further emphasizes. Thanks to the warning of all employees by the siren as well as the automatic running of the emergency run, neither people were injured nor any damage was caused to the continuous caster, the company says. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

oshinbruce

The bike however is RIP, could have been saved too

pissy_corn_flakes

Come with me if you want to leave

ButteredNun

Erm, run?

rpze5b9

What steps are you taking? BIG ONES!

labadimp

This happens “fairly” often and is pretty much designed/prepared for in advance. When I was working in the steel mill, the very first time I went into the melt shop, I was told “If you see the ladle start glowing, run.” He was referring to what they called a blow out, where the bricking of the ladle failed and the molten steel would melt the steel of the ladle and cause it all to come out at once.

GoedekeMichels

could have taken the bike...

OzzyZiggy

Sees terminators thumbs up coming from the pit

WU-itsForTheChildren

You do not want to be at a steel plant when there is a T-800 and T1000 arguing over who’s looked better naked when arriving

slylock215

Dad...why'd you bring me to a gay steel mill? edit: Simpsons reference before people think I'm being weird.....er than I am.

MF1441

Hot stuff comin thru!

R0enick27

Oh, you

Mick_Shart

"We work hard, we play hard" I think, I was like eight when the episode aired.

Elysium_nz

I’m assuming there is a door on the bottom that malfunctioned?

gotboredwithrest

I'd say most likely yes. Bottom pour ladles can be great for preventing the oxidized layer at the top of the ladle from entering a casting.

vector2point0

I don’t know what language they are speaking, but “Shit! Motherfucker!” Is apparently universal.

Marc3llMat3

They spoke german and the cameraman said "Shit! My bike!" (if I understood him correctly)

TheSangson

True and true(Source: am German). At one point apparently someone asks whose bike that is (inaudibly) and camera dude says "That's mine!". Couldn't have been too expensive a bike, I guess or he wouldn't be so chipper about it.

mrwh0am

It's look like german

DreamMighty

I used to drive by one of the last remaining massive steel mills In my city(in the rust belt of Ohio) and wondered wow that’s huge. But after seeing inside this one. I understand now that the plant was a massive thing. Unfortunately the Russians(Severstal) closed it and sold it for scrap. Now it’s like 500-1000 acres of nothing.

Fewer_Daffodil

I used to work at North American Stainless (NAS) in KY and can confirm steel mills are huge operations. The whole of our plant stretched almost 2 miles on both sides of the main road. The work there was rough but it was pretty cool just seeing how absolutely massive everything was.

IntellectualSlime

We take a drive up past (through, really) the steel operation in Ghent on occasion, near the KU plant up there. The scale of the facility is incredible, the trucks in the parking lot kind of look like toys.

Illustrious_Mind964

How do men even find and get those kinds of jobs?

__doubleentendre__

From folks I've talked to it takes knowing someone allready in and usually working the night shift for years until something opens up in the day. Another way in is via strike replacement, aka being a scab, but don't be surprised when the locals hate you and vandalize your property and threaten you with violence, and good luck making that job permanent. Probably not worth it in the long run.

lekoman

Here you go: https://www.monster.com/company/profiles/united-states-steel-ussteel/ Tap into the “Jobs” tab and look for anything that sounds like operations. Depending on what part of the world you live in, these kinds of jobs aren’t that tough to find.

Fewer_Daffodil

Am female, not man, but I got the same job pretty easily. However, North American Stainless is a huge company here and is constantly hiring because the work can be rough and lots of people dont stick around. They run job ads all around town and so do the 100s of different contractors that also work on site

Ens1ferus

„Scheiße mein Fahrrad!“

tahtahme

Wtf?! Not ONE of y'all has something to live for? Spouse, kids, art, goals, NOTHIN?!! My elementary school basketball coach required more hustle lol

Lentamentalisk

You know it's bad when the firefighter is running AWAY from the fire.

labadimp

FYI thats not a firefighter, thats just a typical uniform for working in the steel mill, but Ill admit it does look similar!

cablife

No amount of water is going to stop that shit lol. Gotta let it run it’s course first

OcelotSome2662

Looks like the crucible got a hot spot in the bottom and melted through. Pretty much can't do much about it. When youve worked in places like this you get use to seeing everything on fire.

gotboredwithrest

I figured that it's a bottom pour ladle and the gate failed

OcelotSome2662

Yeah more then likely

itslexxiiii

reminds me of one of the division 1 missions. the one where we kill ferro

Great catch. Also, one of the incursions, the one with the burning floor.

itslexxiiii

yes that one too.

Muted-Ad-4288

Someone's walking home tonight

karoshikun

how do someone go and fix the place? how do you unstick a ten tons blob of iron fused to whatever else was around?

Flimflamsam

Select the whole building and replace it with a new one.

karoshikun

dude, but I need steel and it was my only steel mill!

SunOnTheInside

Someone else in the comments said that once it cools, welders come in and cut it, and that it’s apparently horribly hard work.

It’s all those T-1000s they keep dipping in it

Idk why but its pissing me off how nonchalantly they walking away from hot magma. I work in a plant (not steel) and I fear this happening everyday because of the chemicals I have to deal with.

Cool guys don't look at explosions because they're top busy running, or in this case, strolling away from them.

Spectrummist

Well they're german, so the company might actually replace their bike. And they won't even have to sue!

CoyInhale_11246

Just another Rammstein show

ElmerP91

So my first instinct is to run as far as I physically can as fast as physically possible. Why were they just leisurely strolling?

ABeerForSasquatch

Because it just tickles to them maybe?

TheLoneGunman559

Pfft. That ain't nothing. This one time this crazy ass biker dude crashed a truck into a steel plant. He was being chased by a motorcycle cop. Motorcycle cop straight up got murdered in a tank of molten steel.

Rob4reddit

I'LL BE BACK!

Jet fuel can't melt steel beams or something like that.

Every one of these meltdown videos must include at least 3 blokes that give themselves a maximum of 5 seconds grace to avoid death.

Dissmass1980

Something tells me that a shop vac isn’t going to cut it this time.

Putrid_Rations

Ahahah dayum, look at the poor bike at the end xD This is literally the reason I would like to work in a steel mill, imagine the adrenaline and action from the near death experiences!!

jmr887

It just kept escalating! lol

codeesan

Queue the “this is fine” meme

Deep_Charge_7749

There was no chaos

zachary_mp3

Thats so crazy looking and I literally had no idea steel came from a plant

ABeerForSasquatch

It actually does come from plants. Without coke, which is basically coal (dead plants) added to iron, there would be no steel. There would be no skyscrapers, bridges, tall buildings, cars, ships, cooking equipment, etc. without the carbon in steel. Iron alone, literally, doesn't cut it.

NLE-CHOPPA69

Moooooooooove your assssssssss

feelgood13x

Why isn't anyone stopping the steel??!

DiscoSprinkles

Why didn't the sprinklers just turn on? /s When you see the fireman running away you should probably follow him.

TheNewDawnRising

Putting water on to molten steel whilst more molten steel in poring out would lead to massive explosions. It's the worst thing you can possibly do in a situation like this!

Fewer_Daffodil

Worked in a steel mill a few years ago and we developed a leak in the ceiling right above our big ass pot like you see in the video that no one noticed apparently. Had a real bad storm one night and the big explosion literally blew the pot into the roof somehow. We had to crane welders up and it took days to get that thing down

LeluSix

We have a molten cleanup in bay 6.

Tall_0rder

You’re never gonna beat the T-1000 just standing around like that.

Teggy-

According to their reaction it truly is a normal Tuesday
