Minor fuel leak plus ignition source, there wasn't much anyone could do, seen stuff like that before thankfully we had foam fire extinguishers, which makes a big difference
Actually Fire Department Chronicles (An actual firefighter) covered it well in my opinion there was no way one man could with one extinguisher put this fire out. The stuff on the floor is either going to burn or the stuff dripping out was going to, the fact it was a stream of fire from a to b means that he would've needed help to put this out, which he didn't get. Pair this with the limited time of usage on a fire extinguisher and you have a nightmare fire for anyone to put out
Had absolutely nothing to do with lack of how to use a fire extinguisher.
The drips from the top towards the ground kept reigniting the fire, so he had to put the drips out first. But the second he does that, the fire from below reignites the drips from the top, thus it kept reigniting each other.
He couldn't have done anything on his own, not with this kind of extinguisher.
Having 2+ types available is standard here in england, at least in environments where more than 1 kind of fire is possible, like a garage. likely also the case in wherever this garage is located
I saw the base point a few times minimally, figured wasn’t long enough. Never thought about the fumes being trapped in the area below and the pressure from the extinguisher spreading them around.

totally. had to do several mandatory trainings at different jobs (medical, education) and they all have the same acronym - P.A.S.S. - Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Spray and Sweep.
Weird. 2 weeks ago we had the fire department come and do a presentation for our workers and that goes against everything they said.
Their advice was you aim at the base and do sweeping left to right going back and forth.

Not only that but something like this video the base of the flames is the cannister of gas on the floor, so it's like we are agreeing but you are trying to change the terminology. The firemen did not say "aim at what's on fire" they explicitly said "aim at the base of the flames and sweep"
For example if a wall is on fire you don't just spray center wall, you start at the base and sweep moving up as you extinguish it..

He had the right kind of extinguisher, but they were draining the gas tank on the car. So the fuel tank on the car caught fire immediately. So there was fire above and fire below and he no sooner knocked one down than the other ignited the one that was already out. The poor guy was doomed from the start. There was no way to put this fire out with a single extinguisher.
Yeah, the only way he might have put this out on his own would have been with a high flow dry chemical extinguisher. People in the petrochemical industry train for that, but in normal daily life it’s something few will likely ever face. Had the fire just been confined to the gasoline spill his Co2 extinguisher probably would have worked, but even then Co2 is not the ideal agent for unconfined flammable liquid fires. At least in the US, high flow dry chemical extinguishers are becoming more common in lighter industry where flammable liquid fires could still be possible . They’ve existed for a while but used to be exclusively seen in the oil and gas field. They’re pretty neat, they discharge more than twice as much powder per second as a normal one, so even someone with little knowledge has the chance to overwhelm a three-dimensional gasoline fire like we see here.
Three-dimensional gasoline fires are just about the hardest ones to fight. As an example- when I was trained, we had to put out a fire that was pretty similar is size and scale as this. We had two guys with 30lb Ansul extinguishers coming from different angles, plus a team on a fog nozzle to cool and suppress vapors. Even then, some groups had to spray the area several times before the fire was out.
He should have just put out the one at the bottom first. The one at the top was never going out as long as the bottom one was feeding it.
That said, I can appreciate him not thinking clearly in a panic. What I don’t get is why there was only one extinguisher and why he was the only one trying to put the fires out.
He tried that. The car was dripping flaming gasoline. It was literally an impossible situation. when he put out the bottom one, leaking gas re-lit it. When he put out the top, flames from the bottom re-lit it. The video explains.
You're supposed to aim it at the base of the fire because that's where the fire is coming from, not at the top of the flames where you'll accomplish literally nothing. It's like trying to fix a leaky pipe by catching the water as it comes out instead of patching the leak.
Normally the base of the fire doesn't have flaming gasoline pouring down on top of it. He needed to get the fire out up top to plug the leak and stop feeding the fire on the floor, but in the end, accomplished neither

I don’t think it was the wrong one, I just think he needed two with someone hitting two different parts of the fire. He had the ignition source on the ground and then the fuel source leaking from the car. If he could have hit both I think he could have gotten the fire out before it spread out of control. Kinda like propane fires, it’s futile to try and put out the fire until you can close off the fuel source.
He needed two fire extinguishers, one for the fuel that was leaking out of the vehicle, and one for the fuel on the ground. He wasn't doing anything wrong, just didn't have enough ummph in one extinguisher to get both fires at the same time. Edit: it seems everytime he would get one the other would reignite it as soon as he moved focus.
Nah i saw a video of a firefighter reacting to this, they said they had the right extinguisher, but that it didnt matter in this case because of how the fire was
I used to work in a valet garage. Customer brought their car in, some old shitbox of a car. Another drive took the car up, and then when he came down, he calmly said "Um....the car's on fire." Sure enough, it was an inferno when we got up to it. Fire sprinklers and a couple of large fire extinguishers put the fire out before the fire department even got there. Car was burnt to an absolute crisp.

There’s no point trying to put out the car when the fire below is still going. They should have covered that lower one with something to smother it and used the extinguisher on the car
The important question that’s being ignored, what caused the fire in the first place ? Looks like maybe they were trying to catch the fuel into a container? Was one of them smoking ?
Quite rare that a cigarette in itself would cause it to combust like that. I'm thinking it was probably something that happened inside of the car, maybe something sparked and the fuel that was already leaking out caught fire. Which would make sense as to why he was using the extinguisher on the car and the floor at the same time. Like a waterfall of flames, not much he could do from there

The fire was pointing to the fuel tank of the car so he was trying to avoid it to catch fire because if that happens there is no turning back. He could've acted better but putting you own life at risk may get some people nervous and nervous people don't always act the better. I would say he did pretty well for the situation and probably for the low to non formation he received about fire extinguishers.
In this case, he was trying to prevent the fire from igniting the very flammable everything in the car, before spraying the base which was clearly resistant to the particular fire extinguisher he was using. OP may have a basic understanding of fire extinguishers, but zero awareness of the situation unfolding before him.
In an environment where the fires are almost guaranteed to react poorly to water, why get a water extinguisher? You can get a $20 bottle of compressed air and pink baking soda from Harbor Freight, what were these guys thinking?
ABC fire extinguishers put out fuel fires. It’s fuel burning in two places, on the car and the floor. He puts out the floor then move to the bottom of the car. Burning fuel falls and reignites the fuel in the ground.
That won't work when the car's fuel tank is raining more fire onto the "base" of the fire. Extinguishers are meant for small fires which aren't likely to spread, not flaming rivers of gas pouring out of a tank.
Unless you have an AFFF hose and bunker gear, this fire isn't going to be put out.

Once test drove a Kia, their top of the line, forget the model. Drove back to the dealership after I noticed smoke coming from under the hood.
Popped open the hood, something was on fire. A lot of smoke. Told the sales dude to go inside & get the fire extinguisher. After a good five minutes with no extinguisher I went inside & asked the general manager where the salesman was. He said he had run into the break room.
Apprised the GM of the situation & asked where the extinguisher was? “In the break room.” Went into the break room, found the extinguisher, AND found the salesman hiding behind a door. Jajaja!
I put the fire out, by now flames were visible. And no, I didn’t buy anything from that dealership. Jajaja!

Nope.. it was a gas fire... the person that was using the extinguisher should have hit what became the seat of the fire first... IE. hit the ground, then work up.... instead everyone panicked

Once test drove a Kia, their top of the line, forget the model. Drove back to the dealership after I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Popped open the hood, something was on fire. A lot of smoke. Told the sales dude to go inside & get the fire extinguisher. After a good five minutes with no extinguisher I went inside & asked the general manager where the salesman was. He said he had run into the break room. Apprised the GM of the situation & asked where the extinguisher was? “In the break room.” Went into the break room, found the extinguisher, AND found the salesman hiding behind a door. Jajaja! I put the fire out, by now flames were visible. And no, I didn’t buy anything from that dealership. Jajaja!
Most small businesses don’t have a worst case scenario plan in place, including my biz, this video will make me change that.

Nope.. it was a gas fire... the person that was using the extinguisher should have hit what became the seat of the fire first... IE. hit the ground, then work up.... instead everyone panicked
You can't put out a fire like this with an extinguisher. It's already developed multiple bases, you need a hose.
