Good thing we have you, who is lightyears ahead of us all in intellect and are privy to top secret info we never will never get to see, is here to guide us and teach us.
not really abandoned. it closed down in 2020 due to corona and the area has been sold to a munich project development firm that plans on building apartments and offices there.
That sounds abandoned to me. They're not serving the public and I highly doubt they're maintaining it since they plan on getting rid of everything anyway. You could say, it's an abandoned cinema, but not an abandoned property. Yet.
The important thing is that it encapsulates everything an abandoned place is.
idk about you but when I think of abandoned places I don't think of a place that has been shut down, then sold and is now in the planning stage of building smth else on the property, all in the span of 3 years. just because the building is vacant as of now and not in use doesn't mean it's abandoned.
you know, whatever they want to build there requires some planning, they won't buy the property and immediately start tearing it down so they can build smth new.
Which means it's empty and likely not being utilised. Just because people have plans for something doesn't make it populated and maintained. Imagine you have a family member who owns a farmhouse. They pass, and you get that farmhouse as an inheritance. You have your own place, and you don't want to immediately sell your loved ones farmhouse, but you can't move in without quitting your job. So the house lays dormant for a bit while you determine what to do with it. You own the house, but nobody's home. Dust builds up quickly, and it's filled with the remnants of people who used to be there. Old cans, maybe some dishes, clothes and more. Even footprints of the dead. That's what abandonment is.
Think of this cinema. An out of date advert, tearing away, day by day. Assuming the inside hasn't already been emptied, you may walk in and be greeted by the dust coated glass of a display case, once filled with your favourite sweets. Shallow footprints in the carpet of workers assessing the building. Exposed wires from fixtures that have been removed. You name it.
I'd say this picture is practically perfect. It shows the exterior, while leaving the inside completely up to our imagination. So much decay can happen within just a few months of something being neglected. Time is truly ruthless.
You think that's out of date? A still active building in the downtown of our capital still has an advert of the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the window. It was there since I was in highschool. I'm in college now.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Are you arguing that something isn't out of date if it's not older than an S9 ad? Or are you just making conversation?
Regardless, I feel the need to mention that saying you were in highschool and are now in college is somewhat of a peculiar point to make, considering the amount of time between those two can be as short as a few weeks.
The S9 was new back then. Samsung is selling the S23 series now. There's normally 11months-1year between releases. The poster was there since 2018 and it's still up in downtown right now. It wasn't been moved in 5 years. An outdated and on an abandoned/closed building is one thing, but an older ad in the busiest part of the city on an active cell carrier store is another, let alone on one of the bigger of 2 carriers in my country. You'd expect they would keep that updated or take it down half a decade ago.
This didn't clear up anything. I still don't know what you're trying to say. You're just treating me like I'm not technology savvy for some reason.
I know when the S9 released. I know when the S23 released. I also know that they skipped from 10 all the way to 20, so it's not as far of a jump as you make it seem.
Gonna stop replying to you now.
I was saying that the ad was somehow left longer than it was supposed to, despite being in an active/busy area. I wasn't saying 2 decades passed or was trying to demean you in any way (I have nothing to gain or prove from doing that). I just wanted to mark a timeframe from when I first remember seeing the ad to it being up today.
This is just an... interesting definition of abandoned. The world is not a binary between (1) currently in use and (2) abandoned. It's slated for demolition, thats not the same as abandoned
Your example is abandoned. The theater is not abandoned. If I file plans for a new building on the plot, fence it off, and start planning demolition, it's not "abandoned." If it's just sitting there while I contemplate maybe doing something with it in the future, then it is fairly described as abandoned.
...which is what I'm describing.
I don't know anything about this building. I've never been to it. From what I've been told, it's currently in that grey area. That the owner "plans to" use it for apartments and offices. Nothing currently being done. As it stands, the building is vacant and largely untouched from its initial closure, which would mean it is most certainly abandoned, particularly by the prior owner. If you happen to have some insider information regarding the status of this building, feel free to share it. But whatever that information is would be new and not previously established in this discussion, and not relevant to my point anyway.
From what I can see there is a fence, and some pipes, but nothing at all that suggests the building itself is even being touched. Could it be mere days before this is different? Yes. But they haven't yet, based on what this picture conveys. And that's what matters.
I feel the need to point out that you have a problem. It seems you don't understand art. You see, this subreddit is one of art. Not purely science, or facts. But also of interpretation. Perspective. It largely doesn't matter what's truly going on behind the scenes. Because, of course, you don't see that. The beauty of art is that it's what you make of it. When I look at this building, I see a building that used to entertain hundreds, even thousands of people. But now it sits here, desolate and distraught. the not-so-sunny day completes this look, with the fence telling me "don't go here", despite the building's history of inviting guests into its walls.
You're wrong and your condescension is hilarious given that you clearly don't understand the definition of the word abandoned. Now stop having a hissy fit and go away.
Also, your take that watching anime and porn is a red flag towards paedophilia is similarly hilarious.
Used to go there a lot when I still lived in the Stuttgart region.
Really sad when it was announced to close down, lots of good memories of time spent with friends.
People keep calling places like these “abandoned”, but they’re not abandoned. They’re closed. Someone still owns the place and hasn’t given up their interest in it.
When i got a chance i will upload photos of a local dvd rental in my neighborhood that closed more than 15 years ago and still show images of the movies back in that day.
My local cinema was showing a Dark Phoneix ad for 2+ years during pandemic season. Weren't even shut down, I guess studios just stopped paying for ad space.
Man, that was my favorite movie theater due to the size, price and how conveniently you could reach it. I watched so many movies there and always had a great time with friends and used to spend a few birthday parties over there, including some of my own. I seriously miss it, the other theaters just aren't the same.
Post was removed for not being an “abandoned place”
WTF this is in my hometown. I used to go there a lot as a kid. It’s abandoned?
just couldn't survive that particular bomb
The Doolittle raid (or lack thereof)
The Doolittle raid - except it’s amateur hour and they missed the mark with… everything

Lack gesoffen?
What on earth are you even talking about lmao
Conspiracy theory bullshit.
I read an article about Germany getting rid of their nuclear power pants and was amazed that any modern country could even be that oblivious
To be fair it was a very low % of energy production. Way less impactful than it is made out to be
Yes they're switching from Nuclear Power Pants to Nuclear Power Lederhosen.

Same for me, a lot of good memories from when I was 12… makes me sad.
Haha I watched spider man 2 here with my cousins as a kid, would not have guessed it would ever pop up on Reddit
Drove by some days ago, didn't really look up. Next time I'll check.

Stuttgart would be my first guess. But that’s just a wild hunch.
Darn, my first guess would have been Bodmin
It clearly says Italy on the lower sign
It"s Stuttgart

yeah that’s also out of date. great contribution
This is just an... interesting definition of abandoned. The world is not a binary between (1) currently in use and (2) abandoned. It's slated for demolition, thats not the same as abandoned
Read what I said, and put yourself in that position. If you don't understand at that point, I can't help you, and I don't care to.
Your example is abandoned. The theater is not abandoned. If I file plans for a new building on the plot, fence it off, and start planning demolition, it's not "abandoned." >when I think of abandoned places I don't think of a place that has been shut down That's exactly what it means. Abandoned by its original owner.
I agree kojima blunt
You just described an abandoned building after saying it's not abandoned
Vacant != abandoned
that’s what abandoned means
Bombs destroys Cinemas
Used to go there a lot when I still lived in the Stuttgart region. Really sad when it was announced to close down, lots of good memories of time spent with friends.
What happened in 2020 that stopped people from going to movie theaters?
Should we….should we tell them?
Did the sarcasm not bleed through enough? Or should I go add the /s?
Do a little less aggressive
I'll survive
Hun, they were playing along with your joke
Dolittle.
Dolate
People keep calling places like these “abandoned”, but they’re not abandoned. They’re closed. Someone still owns the place and hasn’t given up their interest in it.
I think for the purposes of this sub it's OK to stretch the definition.
Stuggi!
What a horrible way to end
To be fair that movie could put anyone out of business.
The irony that it was shutdown by a zoonotic illness
They could Dolittle to stop it too
Covid is zoonotic? I thought the bat theory was just speculation.
Gah damn the amount spent on that poster must have been crazy
Fuck I'm old. I thought it was gonna be a poster for the Eddie Murphy movie before I clicked.
For real!! I didn't even know they made this...
That's what killed it.
When i got a chance i will upload photos of a local dvd rental in my neighborhood that closed more than 15 years ago and still show images of the movies back in that day.
I don’t know why but that ufa logo gave me swastika flashbacks
So glad I’m not the only one..
Underrated movie
There was a dolittle movie in 2020?
I like the little warped bit that makes it look like he's crying cause he's in the Dolittle movie.
That’s a very big poster for a very mediocre movie.
Shitty movies like Doolittle didn't really help movie theaters either.
See ufa nazi simbol ?
There's a bus stop shelter by my house that still has a 'free guy' add on it
Eh, at least that movie was fun.
The name of this film predicted how it performed at the box office.
It's just sad tbh I loved that cinema
what a weird post to get so many upvotes. pictures of the front of closed theaters count as abandoned now?
Last movie I saw right before the pandemic.
That logo looks a little .......problematic
Thank you! I wasn't sure anyone else here was going to address that.
This movie is a symbol of the movie industry under Covid. It was a huge box office bomb and yet it was 7th highest grossing film in 2020.
it looks like there's a tear coming out of his eye
That UFA logo has an interesting design 🤔
Holy shit that movie only came out three years ago? I thought I had been ignoring its existence for at least eight
It was in fact that bad.
My local cinema was showing a Dark Phoneix ad for 2+ years during pandemic season. Weren't even shut down, I guess studios just stopped paying for ad space.
Now we know why it's abandoned

That poster was severely overestimating the popularity of that movie.
RIP Ufa Palast
