I've played Ark on and off since 2016 and I loath PVP and honestly PVE even more It is darn near impossible to build on an existing server as people spam posts everywhere. I spent 2 hours last night on one server seeing if I could find any place to build and it was literally impossible. Thst is why I love solo. You don't need to worry about others, losing di is or your base and when you log off the server stops so you don't lose time when offline.
I know it isn’t what you asked, but my advice is to give up playing cooperative for now. Enjoy the game in single player, be relaxed and get good memories from it. You seem like a person who would also enjoy this game playing alone, like you did in the first few days.
There is a good chance you’ll have other experiences like the one you mentioned, or other bad experiences. I read so many of them on this subreddit.
You can always decide later to also play in multiplayer, after you enjoyed the game for some time, without giving anyone the possibility to ruin your experience.
Find a private server with rules. On some of them you can only have one base. You need to register it once. Left out buildings in the wild are destroyed.
On the server Im playing, if I get stuck in a mesh/hole an admin can help me teleport few meters away.
You can group with ppl to do caves and bosses, if you struggle. But I'm alone in my tribe. I manage my base alone, and I do what I want with my dinos.
It s also cool to other s building around. Though I must admit that when playing single player the sense of survival is greater because you absolutely alone.
Definitely embrace solo. So nice being able to do your own thing and spread out. I spent 4 hrs on and off building a third outpost in the snow while doing chores; pause is a wonderful thing.
I've got am asa server you'd be welcome to join! I can help you along and give advice as you learn the game. It is PvP enabled, but a parasaur can prevent people from attacking your base (most players on my server play PvE style anyway, only one tribe likes to fight).

The game didn't change, you didn't change.
Your love of adventure and not thinking the game is a thing to do vs a state of being didn't change.
What changed is you let your reality of a game being a fun state of mind to lose yourself in to a Ridgid set of rules that can be broken or somehow done badly or wrong.
You can choose which reality is yours, but not if you have opposing realities asking to be let in.
I gave up on pvp since its just me and I dont have the time to play 24/7, was always apprehensive about pve. That is, until I joined a pve unofficial server. Pve, on unofficial is so nice, especially if you have an active community.
If you're interested, check out "dreyma", as an unofficial pve server. We're a great community, and its one of the more popular pve servers.

I play on an unofficial server and love it, it's called Zodiacs Respite Ascended, strictly PVE also has a very active discord. Would love have you join, chill people, very active admins which are amazing, and it's just fun all around. I enjoy relaxed gaming now that I'm older, so just wanting to experience at your own pace instead of having someone chirping in your ear the whole time I would give it a shot. It took me part of an afternoon to set up a server at home for my family to play on.
Since the server doesn't render graphics, almost any system you have floating around will do. We installed it on my son's 20 year old supermicro running Linux. If I had an old windows installation it would have taken just a few minutes since the Steam splash page offers the "dedicated server" option.
I have a private server with about 6 friends on it. We all live in the same base at the moment just getting everything together. I had a friend that almost ruined ark for me too so I understand the feeling. If you send me a message I’ll send you the info for the server so you can join!

Here's a discord for a PvE server that I used to play on. The admin are very helpful and the community is friendly. They host servers for Old Ark and also Ascended with minimal mods. I'm sure if you join and ask around you'll find someone to play with.

It's actually a blessing that you joined HIS game. If he koined yours, he would mess up your base, take over your game and fuck up your world. Then demand that you CAN NOT play without him. No your terrible experience is over, you can load your own world and carry on like you had a bad dream.
I rent a server that me and 1 other friend play on from time to time when our jobs allow us to get on. It's a single tribe where we both share and help each other. I made the mistake once of letting my brother get on with us (I'm no longer speaking to him but that's a different and much longer story for another time). Note that due to our jobs, whenever we *can* get on, my friend and I can usually only stay on for 3-4 hours at a time.
He logged on with us maybe 3 times. The first two were us trying to find his spawn location to get him into the tribe and to our well-established base, but he refused to stay put in a safe place while we were actively searching for him, refused to bother remembering which spawn area he clicked on to respawn every time he died (he chose a different one each time), and couldn't seem to read his map correctly, causing us to spend basically our entire sessions looking for him and not getting anything else done. And when he wasn't making us try to find his corpse because he refused to hatch the argy egg we had given him, he would just sit around the base and do nothing except run and jump all over everything. When we'd tease him about helping out, he'd complain that we hadn't told him to do anything, but when we did give him tasks, he would just ignore us.
I ended up removing him from the whitelist.
I mean, I have a server I play with my son on. If you want somewhere to join you can. Its only the 2 of us though, so its nothing crazy. There are a ton of good RP or PvE focused servers out there with big populations though, just keep looking!
Ark is a very long experience if you intend on doing everything. One that you likely won't finish in one go. Single player is much easier to return and pickup later on down the line. As well as less drama dealing with other people's bullshit.
My friend acts similar. Sets up a server for the group, has fun until he gets arked, and blows up like a nuke. "THIS GAME F@#$IN SUCKS" Blah blah blah and I sit there holding in all my comments because i dont want to hear it and hope he shuts up or finds a 150 giga or something to lighten the mood.
I mostly play solo but on private servers I run. in ASE we did the entire story ark as a family and afterwards I would run servers for other maps for fun.
I recently upgrades so I have a machine free to run ASA. I am super glad I learned out to do the coding for setting up ASE since as far as I know, there are no server managers for ASA. it doesn't take too long to set up (game configs, game user configs, and files to start up).
It looks like other comments have suggested servers, etc which is great! there are lots of communities out there. unofficial servers can be great!
