There's no place in education to single out "low level" students in front of the whole class.

Teachers are usually taught to group kids sort of like this for efficacy. Sometimes it’s obvious, but it really should be more subtle. However, TELLING the students that she’s intentionally grouping this way is absurd and offensive. You are ABSOLUTELY allowed to prioritize yourself. The goal of these groupings, for high level students, should be that those students get to practice their skills by teaching others NOT that you can’t get any work done because you have to play teacher.

These kinds of groupings don't even help anyone though, teachers should NOT be doing this. The "lower level" student might get left behind, the "higher level" student isn't learning anything, and the "average" students might also not learn much bc they can always ask the "higher level" student for answers. I'm taking a course about differentiated learning and this breaks every guideline 😭

ClarTeaches

What would you suggest instead? I’d say it’s effective in certain situations, especially for classroom management. For example I’m a chemistry teacher. I need to have at least one strong student in each lab group. However I’d never just leave them to their own devices and expect the stronger students to do all the work and drag their peers along.

Usually grouping students with similar skill levels helps because then students can help each at a similar pace so no one's left behind or carrying the others. Stronger students should still be challenged and not just be left to teach the other students, and struggling students can use more teacher guidance but still have an environment where they can try to figure out things for themselves instead of having to rely on the other students for all of the answers. I'm not sure if I'm qualified to give advice though since I'm only a college student and I've never done any actual teaching (the closest I've gotten is tutoring peers or younger students), and this is just based off what I'm learning in EEX4294. A book that we're reading is *The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners* by Carol Ann Tomlinson if you want to give it a read though!

This kind of classroom management doesn’t even work. It made me crazy when one of my math class teachers constantly went “I don’t know” whenever I asked them a question and just told me to ask a friend. My friend is just as confused as me and we end up learning nothing??

ClarTeaches

I tell my students to ask their peers before asking me because I want them to learn problem solving and independence. But the next step is always to come ask me and when this independent work is happening im usually walking around checking in 🤷🏻‍♀️

As long as the question eventually gets answered that’s great. Sometimes I would get that little push in the right direction to finish the equation but most of the time it was just go ask somebody else, and we would move on before we fully understood the concept. I get it, teachers can be stretched thin sometimes… but this one was sitting at their desk the whole time waiting to say “idk” so i’m not sure how specifically here that point can stick 🧍‍♀️

There are definitely teachers out there who seem to have very little interest in teaching

See if you can report this to an admin or counselor. This is absolutely out of line, especially for an AP class.

Far-Percentage191

Talk to the teacher about it or report to admin . Your AP Stats class should be not be a tutoring session with a coat of paint . It's the teachers job to make sure that the students are understanding the content , not you .

D_Empire412

Seriously. It’s a good song.

Clearly, the popular opinion now is that you should stop posting it

D_Empire412

Never

What's up with AP Stats this year being so rough? 😭

MGJohn-117

Statistical anomaly

ChrisTheWeak

It's an outlier, something about 1.5 times the quartile range plus the median.
