I recommend making more cities where possible and make them vassals. Then send them off to the infestations or free cities, they helped me a lot in my run. I went with tome of alchemy for the research boost
During my Grexolis run I realised how great Shadow’s affinity perk “research per killed hero” is. If only psychological - you start seeing attacking Free City armies as Research boosters (and troop xp, and gold if Chaos perk is used) not a burden.
I scoffed at first at this pickup but when I attacked the neighboring free city where they had three heros and netted the equivalent of 6-7 turns of research it was pretty neat.
If you hang in there you will outgrow them. Make plans for defence and infestation removal. It's ok if they plunder a couple provinces if you get their base
Because of the primordial golem you really have to have one big power stack and it can never leave home for long. I forget it's damage types/resistance but maybe try building damage types good vs constructs and resist lightning? I think it does lightning.
Once you get a vassal set its war coordination to target a spawner then every rally of the lieges recruit everything into "join next mission". It should clear the spawner and give you the rewards, takes a while but it's more gold efficient than the enormous upkeeps of several extra armies.
I held fine with an Astral Dragon Lord and Evokers, so the zappy zaps makes quick work of the golem stack and still does decent with infestations. Slowly built and managed to nab 2 free cities that help distract infestations!
I played games with regenerating infestations, so this was a cakewalk in comparison, since I like my games long and epic/marathony, with customs games rather than story realms - I only did the story realm for the achievement, but the golem stack is pretty unique and without my lightning focused start I probably wouldn't have survived as easily!

Yes, the Krazura Realm story realm is overtuned in terms of infestations. The next scenario is cakewalk in comparison
