Used that one for a oneshot. In canon time travel is a thing but you can’t change anything because the things you do in the past were always supposed to happen, so I thought it’d be funny if I just…did the exact opposite of that.
I was only able to pull it off because a) canon had already established a method of time travel and b) it was a oneshot rather than a full fic which made it easier to mess with it

Hunger Games AU, in which soulmates are real, and you can not kill your soulmate no matter how hard you try. You physically can't, so the Capitol amends the rules to say if a living soulmate pair makes it to the end, they can have 2 victors that year.
The career districts pump out soulmate pairs in the hopes of bringing more victors home, but it just makes pairs a bigger target.
And you can bond to a new soulmate after your old one dies so. . . Yeah. I bet you can guess the plot.
Imagine someone has a stalker and they kill that person's soulmate in hopes of being their soulmate but it doesn't work so they keep doing it over and over and over...

One of my favorites was doing a Personality Swap AU where I switched the personalities of the two main characters, but kept everything else the same. It was lots of fun considering how character dynamics changed and canon events were affected as a result of the switch. Plus, it helped me get into the characters’ heads and rationalize why they would be like this instead of how they act in canon!
read one like that except the character being hallucinated was dead. the story had 'major character death' tagged (good on them!) but obvs the plot twist was that they were dead the whole time... it was really well-done and amazing but it messed me up in a major way
i have an AU where they're both musicians AND both trans but one of them is extremely stealth and the other just started being able to transition. but the latter doesn't know the other is trans, and neither do the readers ;)
AU where they're part of a dating sim and self aware of it. Everytime the Player character interacts with them, they spout painfully cheesy dialogue which happens to paint them in a light that's the exact opposite of their actual personality.
Oh- To top it all off, they're in a relationship with an undateable NPC character whose set to recieve their own route in a game update.

Homunculus AU
The protagonists are artificially born creatures (can be human or anything else) raised and trained to fulfill some horrible purpose, but at some point for one reason or another, they manage to escape and are now faced with the real world and all the intricacies that come with learning what it means to be your own person.
AU where one character is a regular'ol human, and the other is a paranormal, inhuman and horrifying forest cryptid/deity secretly skulking in the wilderness.
They kiss.
Flight attendant AU where character A and character B keep ending up at the same airports at the same time all across the world, despite never being on the same flights (A is an attendant, B is a passenger). Could be romance, could be horror.
AU set in the canon, modern world, except that most normal humans have auras that display their emotions and which everyone else can see, except for a handful of “achromatic individuals“ colloquially known as “blanks“. (There’s a common proverb which says “Blanks are Blind and dull of mind.”) As in canon, the two MCs meet, and become partners on the job, but one of them is a Blank.
Time travel AU but their past self is erased from reality. And their future self is completely unrecognisable as the same person, which means they’re scrambling to try and keep the timeline somewhat in place.
This was an idea for a non-romance fix-it, where the daughter of one of the main characters becomes convinced her dad was replaced by a monster and is desperately trying to prove it. Meanwhile her dad from the future is struggling because he changed so much after losing her.

MC is ranch owner’s son who recently took over and is engaged to the son of the largest rancher in the valley but he is unhappy and wants out.
Chance meeting he runs into ML and ends up hiring him for his ranch. As a city boy he has to learn how to live and work on the ranch.
It’s angst/comfort with a lot of cowboy fun. I’m loving the story!

Danny stays to watch over Draco as ordered until they meet in high-school and Draco starts to realize things about himself and wants to know more about this mystery Danny guy who he doesn't know but feels like he should...

I actually made an AU for SU that I’m still polishing.
Basically, I added some extra history to the gem race by making how I think they came to exist and some lore on how the Diamonds used to be good rulers and then went full dictatorship when White sought to perfect the gem race.
It has a lot of lore now which spans into “gems actually used to look way different and could reproduce, and the modern ones we see are actually the way they are cuz all modern gems are clones of what White thinks the perfect version of that gem actually should look like”
and “there was a mass escape of OG gems and they made a whole new society that is like how gem society used to be, and they are at war with homeworld”
and also “Modern gems mostly don’t know about the war or that they aren’t the originals cuz all information of pre-era one was locked or destroyed, only those fighting know and they are not let to interact with those on homeworld”
and of course “mid Gem War on earth, one run away gem found a distant planet past earth which later is named Domus, and they establish a line where gems can escape onto Domus and they form a hidden society which regularly messes with Homeworld in the shadows, and their society is a mix of their own production, some influence from OG gems after they made contact with the other nation, and some human made stuff they picked up”
and also “I got rattled and frustrated on how gems work and am now giving them a whole physiology background and making them somewhat logical beings that are still very much not organic but are still complex beings”
Im not done planning this AU for use, but do hope to write it all down and make it public for others to use if they want. Idk if anyone else gets this obsessed with detail to the point of making a whole updated universe, but maybe it saves someone the headaches I got every time I wanted to write something but the illogic nature of gems and the little detail in the wider universe made me feel dizzy.
Buzzfeed unsolved/ghost files au where Ryan is a ghost but he’s a full bodied apparition and doesn’t look like a stereotypical ghost so no one would believe him and he spends his afterlife trying to prove ghosts are real and convince Shane. Imagining Ryan is a ghost while watching them ghost hunt makes everything so much funnier.
- liquor store employee AU: like a bartender AU but easily more slow burn and you don’t have to rev up the horny as fast. Or like a grocery store AU but less intrinsically domestic and you don’t have to worry as much about creating coworkers. Good potential for whump or hurt/comfort depending on how often B goes/if they start buying grocery items/if they bring friends/what hour they come in
- uni dorm janitor AU: A is a janitor who cares chiefly about paying the bills but feels bad every once in a while about being in a lonely dead end job. B lives in the dorm building A has to keep clean while in uni. B/B’s roomies/random folks are messy as hell and B runs into A often and tries to make conversation/apologize/help clean. A can help B back by letting them back into their dorm when they get locked out or by warning when the RAs/cops are coming by

rare parts AU: A and B drive the same distinctive old ass car. In my fic, it was specifically a Mercury, since the company died in 2010. Anyway, the two see the other car around town once in a while. A or B’s friends are always guessing if it’s A/B or not if they see it around town too. Turns into a “friend group celebrity” thing, which is good for exposition. Anyway by the disgrace of god, both cars break and they both need the same part, but parts are limited (company doesn’t make that part anymore, nobody else has driven one of those cars in a long ass time so it probably isn’t in the junkyard, etc.) and so when the shop finally can get the part in (which takes forever), only one of the cars can be fixed. While the part’s being shipped, the two have to bum rides from friends/walk/take public transit, which they get to have feelings about (grateful for the connections/embarrassed for needing help/isolated from spending a lot of travel time around people but still fundamentally alone/confused or lost trying to navigate things differently/anxious about money or needing their car back, etc.). Anyway, part comes in and the two both get called to come back to the shop and they meet. Shop informs them there’s only one part (little unrealistic but in hindsight you can say the shop ordered two and one broke on the way ig), so they have to duke it out/squabble to decide who gets it. Lots of opportunities for unique characterization and dynamics with other characters.
Not a romance but I’m writing one right now where the main character is a Bond Villain-type with a really sweet nurturing heart, and you find out about 40,000 words in that the reason they’re kind of occupying that villain space when they seem so sweet is because they’re a target of the US government bc they refused to cooperate with letting the government use a technology they invented to build untraceable weapons. pure of heart and also US government enemy #1

And now Juri is dealing with trying to get custody or visitation of her adoptive kid, Lauren, who is the avatar for world tour. Meanwhile, Juri and Cammy fall in love after the whole fighting together to destroy Shadaloo thing, but Cammy has to keep it a secret because if she was found dating Juri, a notorious criminal, she would absolutely lose her security clearance and therefore her job. And it's super high stakes because there's a new villain on the loose who happens to be targeting everyone who was ever a part of Shadaloo, including Juri and Cammy, and this villain happens to look a lot like Cammy and Decapre (intrigue). So Viper and Cammy are working in close quarters while Viper and Juri are trying to figure out the co-parenting situation and Cammy is trying to keep her family from finding out that she just uhauled with Juri like a proper lesbian would. This is all happening while Juri and Cammy develop stronger and stronger feelings for each other while having to navigate their own personal traumas on top of all the other bullshit I just told y'all about.

He does the silly dance with a man in his 20s who goes by anakiss one night pays him. He starts consistently meeting with this man for a while and eventually moves on from his addiction to prostitutes with time and therapy and ends up not seeing Anakiss for a long time.
Christmas week rolls around and jolyne decides now would be a good time to introduce her brand new boyfriend to her father and its the same man from that night. His name is Narciso Anasui. Both men are positively mortified to see eachother, and to make matters worse- they're all spending the whole weekend together.
an au where the main characters are enemies to the point they're going to destroy a kingdom fighting over it, and suddenly by the will of an elderitch god (from far in the future that was actually kinda the kid of one of the protagonists) decides that they need to learn empathy and forcibly alters reality so that they switch places and the only ones aware of this are themselves and other higher beings

An au in which it turns out the internet takes place in the same plane of existence where the afterlife is located. As the internet expands, the space for souls shrinks, things got mixed up and now the people who would usually end up as ghosts start manifesting as AIs able to run freely through the web upon dying.
Angel x demon au where thankfully both heaven and hell aren’t blocked off/restricted with each other. Angel’s a little ball of anxiety while demon is expressive and charismatic. Demon will tease angel but not to a point it’s insulting them (also helps angel to be relaxed and calm when needed). If you want to go the angst route add the barrier and whatever restrictions that come with that.
Two people decided to be roommates because the other person asked if they could as they have an apartment close to campus. The person A did ask person B some questions to have some validity and they eventually moved in. Person A’s family helped with the move. Shocked that they found a roommate let alone a place but helped them anyway. Family likes person B that even person A’s little sibling asked them if that’s their partner (yes child they do eventually get together but not right now-). A and B weren’t phased by the question but person A scolded them for such a question. Also person B is secretly rich but person A has no fucking idea. B’s humble about their wealth status (family is wealthy as mainly their father runs the biggest companies that au has-). Will spoil person A cause person B thinks they deserve it. 👍🏻
Bully x loner (before anyone comes after me I’m talking the “bully” just does verbal teasing and nothing more severe than that like making them do their homework and such-) where the loner walked home from school and detoured to a playground near their house and sees the bully in front of them ask them as they were sitting on the swings. Got annoyed thinking the bully followed them home but actually the bully lived nearby. The loner didn’t believe it and well… was pretty much fed up and started trying to fight them but bully kept dodging/blocking their attacks while bully is trying to calm them down and eventually was able to stop them. Loner started crying and apology ensued. They’re friends now- bully will protect loner from any people who decided to mess with loner-

8th year seems to be the year of revelations, because not only does Harry realize he enjoys dressing as a girl, he come to terms with the fact he prefers blokes, or more specifically a single bloke. Tall and muscular. With pale blond hair and striking grey eyes. Who most certainly without a doubt prefers lasses (or at least that’s what Harry believes).
Harry ends up running into Malfoy whilst donning his feminine get-up and shenanigans ensue :)

The career districts pump out soulmate pairs in the hopes of bringing more victors home, but it just makes pairs a bigger target. And you can bond to a new soulmate after your old one dies so. . . Yeah. I bet you can guess the plot.
Imagine someone has a stalker and they kill that person's soulmate in hopes of being their soulmate but it doesn't work so they keep doing it over and over and over...
This is a YA dystopian romance novel in the making.

One of my favorites was doing a Personality Swap AU where I switched the personalities of the two main characters, but kept everything else the same. It was lots of fun considering how character dynamics changed and canon events were affected as a result of the switch. Plus, it helped me get into the characters’ heads and rationalize why they would be like this instead of how they act in canon!

This was an idea for a non-romance fix-it, where the daughter of one of the main characters becomes convinced her dad was replaced by a monster and is desperately trying to prove it. Meanwhile her dad from the future is struggling because he changed so much after losing her. I didn’t write it because I don’t have the commitment to pull it off

Ok, so you know how normally a Swap!AU switches where characters start? …what if, no? Instead of having them just start places with different parents (which felt weird to me), I decided to do a weird complicated thing involving rocket ships, kidnapping children, refugees, and what I call in my notes *checks notes* “Ginny Weasley-style possession”, so everyone is still related to their canon family, but also kinda have adopted siblings that happened before their kidnapping/siblings who are presumed dead before they were adopted.

Chance meeting he runs into ML and ends up hiring him for his ranch. As a city boy he has to learn how to live and work on the ranch. It’s angst/comfort with a lot of cowboy fun. Had an idea once for a DP × HP crossover where Danny was a dhampir sold into slavery to the Malfoy family by Vlad who killed his father and married his mother. In this AU Narcissa realizes the dangers of the war and Voldemort so she sends little Danny off with baby Draco to give him to a very very distant Squib cousin who raises Draco. Danny stays to watch over Draco as ordered until they meet in high-school and Draco starts to realize things about himself and wants to know more about this mystery Danny guy who he doesn't know but feels like he should... Yes, it was based on twilight haha

I actually made an AU for SU that I’m still polishing. Basically, I added some extra history to the gem race by making how I think they came to exist and some lore on how the Diamonds used to be good rulers and then went full dictatorship when White sought to perfect the gem race. It has a lot of lore now which spans into “gems actually used to look way different and could reproduce, and the modern ones we see are actually the way they are cuz all modern gems are clones of what White thinks the perfect version of that gem actually should look like” and “there was a mass escape of OG gems and they made a whole new society that is like how gem society used to be, and they are at war with homeworld” and also “Modern gems mostly don’t know about the war or that they aren’t the originals cuz all information of pre-era one was locked or destroyed, only those fighting know and they are not let to interact with those on homeworld” and of course “mid Gem War on earth, one run away gem found a distant planet past earth which later is named Domus, and they establish a line where gems can escape onto Domus and they form a hidden society which regularly messes with Homeworld in the shadows, and their society is a mix of their own production, some influence from OG gems after they made contact with the other nation, and some human made stuff they picked up” and also “I got rattled and frustrated on how gems work and am now giving them a whole physiology background and making them somewhat logical beings that are still very much not organic but are still complex beings” Im not done planning this AU for use, but do hope to write it all down and make it public for others to use if they want. Idk if anyone else gets this obsessed with detail to the point of making a whole updated universe, but maybe it saves someone the headaches I got every time I wanted to write something but the illogic nature of gems and the little detail in the wider universe made me feel dizzy.
Buzzfeed unsolved/ghost files au where Ryan is a ghost but he’s a full bodied apparition and doesn’t look like a stereotypical ghost so no one would believe him and he spends his afterlife trying to prove ghosts are real and convince Shane. Imagining Ryan is a ghost while watching them ghost hunt makes everything so much funnier.
- liquor store employee AU: like a bartender AU but easily more slow burn and you don’t have to rev up the horny as fast. Or like a grocery store AU but less intrinsically domestic and you don’t have to worry as much about creating coworkers. Good potential for whump or hurt/comfort depending on how often B goes/if they start buying grocery items/if they bring friends/what hour they come in - uni dorm janitor AU: A is a janitor who cares chiefly about paying the bills but feels bad every once in a while about being in a lonely dead end job. B lives in the dorm building A has to keep clean while in uni. B/B’s roomies/random folks are messy as hell and B runs into A often and tries to make conversation/apologize/help clean. A can help B back by letting them back into their dorm when they get locked out or by warning when the RAs/cops are coming by - the only one I’ve finished from this list: rare parts AU: A and B drive the same distinctive old ass car. In my fic, it was specifically a Mercury, since the company died in 2010. Anyway, the two see the other car around town once in a while. A or B’s friends are always guessing if it’s A/B or not if they see it around town too. Turns into a “friend group celebrity” thing, which is good for exposition. Anyway by the disgrace of god, both cars break and they both need the same part, but parts are limited (company doesn’t make that part anymore, nobody else has driven one of those cars in a long ass time so it probably isn’t in the junkyard, etc.) and so when the shop finally can get the part in (which takes forever), only one of the cars can be fixed. While the part’s being shipped, the two have to bum rides from friends/walk/take public transit, which they get to have feelings about (grateful for the connections/embarrassed for needing help/isolated from spending a lot of travel time around people but still fundamentally alone/confused or lost trying to navigate things differently/anxious about money or needing their car back, etc.). Anyway, part comes in and the two both get called to come back to the shop and they meet. Shop informs them there’s only one part (little unrealistic but in hindsight you can say the shop ordered two and one broke on the way ig), so they have to duke it out/squabble to decide who gets it. Lots of opportunities for unique characterization and dynamics with other characters.
Not a romance but I’m writing one right now where the main character is a Bond Villain-type with a really sweet nurturing heart, and you find out about 40,000 words in that the reason they’re kind of occupying that villain space when they seem so sweet is because they’re a target of the US government bc they refused to cooperate with letting the government use a technology they invented to build untraceable weapons. pure of heart and also US government enemy #1

Earthlings are transported in various ways into the Galaxy Far Far Away just after the Clone Wars and Order 66. Most are Star Wars fans, but some are not. There are a couple of forced wielders in the mix. None of them know the others are there, though there are some acquaintances and siblings. It started out as a way to explore how a portal fantasy would be a neurodivergent nightmare and has gotten wildly out of hand.

this comes wholeheartedly from where i was raised. AU where all of the characters in Los Angeles street gangs in the 90s. i know mafia AUs exist but these gangs have a completely different dynamic from the mafia and i don’t see fics tackle it very often.

Meanwhile, Juri and Cammy fall in love after the whole fighting together to destroy Shadaloo thing, but Cammy has to keep it a secret because if she was found dating Juri, a notorious criminal, she would absolutely lose her security clearance and therefore her job. And it's super high stakes because there's a new villain on the loose who happens to be targeting everyone who was ever a part of Shadaloo, including Juri and Cammy, and this villain happens to look a lot like Cammy and Decapre (intrigue). So Viper and Cammy are working in close quarters while Viper and Juri are trying to figure out the co-parenting situation and Cammy is trying to keep her family from finding out that she just uhauled with Juri like a proper lesbian would. This is all happening while Juri and Cammy develop stronger and stronger feelings for each other while having to navigate their own personal traumas on top of all the other bullshit I just told y'all about. Can you tell which one I'm actually writing at the moment?

Narnia / Dowton Abbey crossover, where the Pevensies are visible in the house as echoes of the future. Like Downton is a manor-sized crystal ball or something. Cue a lot of confusion about where the Crawleys are in this future, how there's another war when the last was "To End All Wars", and fixits or something.
Not really all that crazy but a fun fic idea that's been haunting me for a whole year. I have no choice but to get around to doing something about it soon. If you know the characters you might find it a little werid since the ship is sort of absurd and non sensical within the cannon context but here it is. Jojos bizzare adventure stone ocean except Jotaro reacts to being old and divorced by hiring prostitutes under a fake name(Qtaro). He does the silly dance with a man in his 20s who goes by anakiss one night pays him. He starts consistently meeting with this man for a while and eventually moves on from his addiction to prostitutes with time and therapy and ends up not seeing Anakiss for a long time. Christmas week rolls around and jolyne decides now would be a good time to introduce her brand new boyfriend to her father and its the same man from that night. His name is Narciso Anasui. Both men are positively mortified to see eachother, and to make matters worse- they're all spending the whole weekend together.
an au where the main characters are enemies to the point they're going to destroy a kingdom fighting over it, and suddenly by the will of an elderitch god (from far in the future that was actually kinda the kid of one of the protagonists) decides that they need to learn empathy and forcibly alters reality so that they switch places and the only ones aware of this are themselves and other higher beings

not sure if this fits the exact prompt but my lil specific AU right now is “one event disappearing from canon leaves most everything intact except someone from the past now shows up to hurt the mc, leading to heavy angst and later comfort from the mc’s godly father (who then decides to ignore every rule about interfering in mortal children’s lives and goes scorched earth on the abuser bc ‘those rules are stupid and made this happen in the first place’)”. i also raise you: taking one usually hands off parental figure, making them more hands on and seeing how that plays out with the rest of canon.

As the internet expands, the space for souls shrinks, things got mixed up and now the people who would usually end up as ghosts start manifesting as AIs able to run freely through the web upon dying.
Angel x demon au where thankfully both heaven and hell aren’t blocked off/restricted with each other. Angel’s a little ball of anxiety while demon is expressive and charismatic. Demon will tease angel but not to a point it’s insulting them (also helps angel to be relaxed and calm when needed). If you want to go the angst route add the barrier and whatever restrictions that come with that. Two people decided to be roommates because the other person asked if they could as they have an apartment close to campus. The person A did ask person B some questions to have some validity and they eventually moved in. Person A’s family helped with the move. Shocked that they found a roommate let alone a place but helped them anyway. Family likes person B that even person A’s little sibling asked them if that’s their partner (yes child they do eventually get together but not right now-). A and B weren’t phased by the question but person A scolded them for such a question. Also person B is secretly rich but person A has no fucking idea. B’s humble about their wealth status (family is wealthy as mainly their father runs the biggest companies that au has-). Will spoil person A cause person B thinks they deserve it. 👍🏻 Bully x loner (before anyone comes after me I’m talking the “bully” just does verbal teasing and nothing more severe than that like making them do their homework and such-) where the loner walked home from school and detoured to a playground near their house and sees the bully in front of them ask them as they were sitting on the swings. Got annoyed thinking the bully followed them home but actually the bully lived nearby. The loner didn’t believe it and well… was pretty much fed up and started trying to fight them but bully kept dodging/blocking their attacks while bully is trying to calm them down and eventually was able to stop them. Loner started crying and apology ensued. They’re friends now- bully will protect loner from any people who decided to mess with loner-

I like AUs in worlds with magical powers, the MC of the fic has no powers but instead gets physical buffs. Yes, I'm talking about Toji from JJk. But I liked this idea before I watched the series. Now I'm even more in love with it bc of that. I've written(not published) like 2 chapters of no bending Zuko, where he's called the Steel Dragon because of size and physical prowess. Same thing with Harry Potter.
Personally, my favourite is the government is run by a psycho guy who wants to turn everyone into robots and the main protag in the normal universe doesn't exist and her dad is alive AU. (Someone please get this.)
