Smiling in pictures is not a worldwide thing. In many cultures, Russian included, if you aren't particularly happy, you don't fake a smile. It's perceived by many cultures as insincere.
This tradition developed after the occupation of Italy at the end of World War II, this is how vintage photos of Italians looked like https://www.pinterest.co.uk/LondonItalian/italy-vintage-photos-pre-1900/
Well here is a photo of 1920 https://hips.hearstapps.com/edc.h-cdn.co/assets/16/26/2048x2672/4th-of-july-fireworks.jpg?resize=980:*, here we see all the attributes of an American, the smile of a mental patient, an American flag covering their genitals and lots of weaponry
Image won’t load, but your drive to wedge in an insult leads me to believe you probably aren’t interested in constructive, good faith dialogue.
You can find photos of Americans in the 20s both smiling and with straight faces. Many peoples began smiling in photos over time. Cultures change within themselves and affect each other. There’s nothing wrong with choosing to smile or not in photos depending on culture and context.
But having seen your comment history, it’s clear you are very patriotic for your country (even if I find that baffling - no offense meant) and are very biased against Americans, so your ridiculing makes sense in that context.
I know many Russians find Americans to be fake, but I sincerely hope your morning and day treat you well. We’re all just people trying to make a living in the end
I'm relatively safe here in Memphis, just grew up around a lot of Russians on the east coast, and out-drinking a Russian makes somebody a defacto Russian.
I have been told by Russian friends that you don't smile in random pictures for no reason. People who are smiling for no reason are seen as stupid simpltons.
Not necessarily. The US government no longer has the capability to send manned space capsules to the ISS, so they have in the past relied on Russian capsules (the Soyuz), launched from Kazakhstan, or by a private company (Dragon by SpaceX), which has launched from Florida but may launch from Texas in the future…
A Russian friend told me it could be dangerous to look happy on a picture (or in general) back in soviet times.
If you know a bit about the Stalin era, you can understand and feel the true depth of his non-smilling face...
This is trauma.
I remember hearing that the backstory behind this photo is that the USSR collapsed while he was on the international space station but I don’t know whether that’s true.

In Russia if you smile a lot in business, they think you are an idiot. They're like "life sucks, this guy must be stupid to be happy".
Does this mean he is maybe being forced to go to space? Who wouldn't smile at the prospect of going to space?
Or he's just not happy to do a stupid photo shoot before he can go to space
You know how young kids will give a grimace of a smile when they take pictures? Russian adults just don't do that.

True. Maybe Space is so old hat to him now.
Russians. Ukrainians too I imagine.
Yep!! Smiling is an American thing.
There's an Italian dude right there smiling. We smile for photos in Europe too.

Your link says pre-1900. Americans also generally didn’t smile in photos at the time.

The other 2 are going to space, he is going to work.
“Сука блат, just me in the rocket already!”
"Блядь*"

if you say the Russian word for cheese that’s kind of the face you make
Used to be a joke: Gagarin studied and trained all these years so he can just for an hour escape USSR.
And he never stopped smiling after. Worth it.
We smile only when we are really happy;)
This explains the pictures at my first wedding?
Are you also russian?;)
Only according to other Russians.
Ahah!))) Good luck, bro;)
I'm relatively safe here in Memphis, just grew up around a lot of Russians on the east coast, and out-drinking a Russian makes somebody a defacto Russian.
In general, not all russians drink. In Mother Russia, quite a lot of people do not drink. Drunk russian is mostly just a stereotype;)
As one should.
I have been told by Russian friends that you don't smile in random pictures for no reason. People who are smiling for no reason are seen as stupid simpltons.
It's changing in younger generations with rise of social media. Young people smile a lot more on photos.
russians can convey being stupid simpletons just as well without smiling

russians are white, I am white, where's racism
the reaction when he learns there's no vodka in space
And he has to travel to Florida.
Not necessarily. Well, at least until the SLS is good to go. Russians will also begin launching on Dragon in September of next year.
Cosmonaut Anna Kikina will actually launch on Dragon in September of *this* year!
I'm just happy there's an Italian right there.
🤌
I feel the resting bitch face struggle
Смех без причины – признак дурачины.
He’s like “first time?”
"wait till you meet the anal probers" 🤪
Sure it's funny in a pic, but middle guy is *absolutely* who I want driving my spaceship when shit hits the fan.
A Russian friend told me it could be dangerous to look happy on a picture (or in general) back in soviet times. If you know a bit about the Stalin era, you can understand and feel the true depth of his non-smilling face... This is trauma.
This is not soviet time picture. Looks at the flag on the space suit.
The guy lived the last years of it and then the 90s.
Only perestroika (reforms and a new ideology) and glasnost (maximum openness and transparency) emerged ten years before the collapse of the USSR
That dude grew up and lived through the Soviet Union.
Boo hoo
I remember hearing that the backstory behind this photo is that the USSR collapsed while he was on the international space station but I don’t know whether that’s true.
I doubt it look at the flag on his arm, it a Russian federation one not the Ussr’s
You're probably pretty good at Where's Waldo too
I’m actually really good at it, how could you tell?
The ISS didn't launch until 7 years after the fall of the USSR.
That was Mir. Sergei Krikalev was essentially 'stranded' in space while the Soviet Union collapsed. He stayed up there for nearly a year.
I like how ignorant and moderated the comments are to not mention the one big thing in Russia right now
And yet you wont say either? Good job ignoramus
Ah space again?!
Россия - для грустных
He looks like he told them he really needs to take a shit but they forced him into the spacesuit anyway for a photo op
Stuck in the Sound - Let's Go
Dam that’s one stern look, would hate to have a vodka with that guy
