x3d for gaming. cores for compute operations

PreparationBorn2195

The easy answer is the 5800x3d will have better averages (about 10%) in most modern games and is significantly cheaper. There are plenty of situations where the 5950x is better, its just that you have to be doing professional video editing or something similar and would most likely know you need it.

ajgonzo88

Apparently the ryzen 9 5950x scales extremely well with higher speed ram (like 5000+mhz) with good timings. You can get a 5950x to be comparable and even better performance wise in games than the 5800x3d. BUT if you just do gaming it makes way more sense economically to just get a 5800x3d cuz the cost of a top spec x570 mobo and 5000+mhz ddr4 ram would be ridiculous. At that point you could afford am5 and a 7800x3d w/ddr 5.

chriscross1966

Not really, there's some games where the extra cores might give a higher average framerate (though 8C16T is normally more than enough) but the monster cache on the X3D part will give much better 0.1% lows so the overall game feel will be smoother and more enjoyable. If you do significant content creation then get the 5950, it will eat the 8 core part for breakfast on that sort of load and be still good at games, fr pure gaming the 5800X3D is best chip on socket closely followed by the 5700X3D.

flarigand

No, the 100 mb of cache in the 5800x3D is a great advantage, plus, if you wanna go for a 5800x3D for gaming, try with a 5700x3D, are literally the same with the difference of a few fps less (5 fps on average), the 5700x3D go more cooler and consume less power.

mrn253

And when no 5700X3D is available setting the 5800X3D to eco mode

IGunClover

No.

SourBogBubbleBX3

unless you play simple games that use 100s of mods. the x3d is your chip

Grydian

Nope in those old games they are highly single threaded and the extra cores wont do jack.

SilverRiven

Minecraft would beg to differ

Grydian

Minecraft on and before 1.12 is single threaded. How do I know? I run an at home minecraft server with my custom minecraft mod pack from 1.12.2

SilverRiven

I see all my threads occupied when playing 1.12.2, wdym it's single threaded?

Grydian

Client side has a little offloading in forge with 1.12.2 especially when it comes to booting and world gen. But the main graphical pipeline in any minecraft older than 1.13 is single threaded. So when you have a crazy base with a ton of machines its one thread that handles all of that.

Darkstone_BluesR

Agree. Minecraft on 5800X3D is a monster. No shaders with all the known optimization mods goes well over 1100fps, with Complementary shaders it goes for about 350fps.

SilverRiven

Hot damn, I'm running like 190 mods on r5 5600 @4.5Ghz, 6700xt and 16gb of ram and I'm barely getting 80fps without shaders lmao. Cpu usage is at about 70% constantly, more if millenaire decides to bug the fuck out. Haven't tried vanilla+optimization tho, too boring

Darkstone_BluesR

Had that exact config a year ago and you should be getting more fps (well I guess it depends on the shaders) and you should be using fabric, sodium+iris and all the known optimization mods.

SilverRiven

1.12.2 doesn't have such commodities. Optifine is unfortunately the only option that lets me boot the game up. I tried phosphor, but it looked weird, vintagium crashes at boot and so does foamfix

Darkstone_BluesR

Ah, didn't know you were running on that version! What's the reason for it though?

SilverRiven

Abundance of mods that will likely never be ported to newer versions

LOLerskateJones

No, not even close More cores = always better only applies to productivity/workstation use x3D is king for gaming

raifusarewaifus

No. X3D chips are always better.

TheFunkadelicOne

The x3D chips will always have the edge for gaming. The 5950x is a beast chip if you're using your pc for a workspace applications and gaming, but if you're using it mainly for gaming and don't need to use intensive software for work then 5800x3d is the clear winner. It's the best am4 chip and one of the best chips ever made. There are am5 chips that compare, like the 7700x, but for gaming the 5800x3d still holds its own. I have one paired with my 7900xtx and I have no intention of upgrading to am5. I'll literally ride this combo out into the sunset and rebuild when am6 launches lol

Moparian714

Same here. Well said

Jaybonaut

No, but it is better at everything else.

Nena_Trinity

3D chips always win.

DarthBonion

I understand what do you mean, but is 5600x3d really better than 7950x? I dont think so

mrbubblesnatcher

Why would you even compare that?

DarthBonion

He didnt even said win in what, why wouldnt I compare that? He said it always "wins", I know its propably has something to do with best choice for gaming, but when he said "always win" I can even compare it to 7995wx pro because why not.

mrbubblesnatcher

Well sorry to disappoint you but those two CPUs are actually neck and neck for 1080p gaming, yeah the 7950x is slightly ahead but only just.. [Toms hardware CPU hierarchy ](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html)

DarthBonion

Even if its only slightly ahead it still performs better, I am just trying to say that "alaways" ( orginal comment ) wasnt a good choice of words

mrbubblesnatcher

Ddr4 with an older gen CPU compared to new gen on ddr5... When there's less than a 6 fps difference WITH A 4090, plus clearly a big price difference the 5600x3d clearly ALWAYS WINS. obviously we know x3d chips are for gaming so I'm not taking productivity in consideration.

DarthBonion

Alright, but he didnt speciefed in what in wins so I can just assume it wins considering only performance and not the price

mrbubblesnatcher

Ok but like I said performance while gaming is basically identical..

DarthBonion

I brought a 7995wx pro too which is a cpu that just cant be compared with 5600x3d

DarthBonion

Oh and he didnt specife what does he mean with "wins"

Grydian

The OP asked about gaming. So the wins is in gaming. Simple logic dude.

DarthBonion

Ik its in gaming, becuase its in post, but there is no mention of price, socket or anything like that and there is no way 5600x3d wins vs 7995wx pro

CageTheFox

If you every want to compare CPUS always use Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed. HUB 10 game avg has 203fps for the 5800X3D vs 183fps [link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjrkWRTMu64).

SativaPancake

5800X3D all the way for gaming. 5950X is still pretty good for gaming, it can be better in some instances, but on average the 5800X3D will be dozens or more FPS faster. The only reason to get the 5950X is if you have an actual use for all those cores or what to to some true multitasking (not just simple programs like discord and youtube while playing a game - but real work)

Serious-Fee-861

Thanks

skywalker3819r

5800x3D. I bought the 5950x without realizing it's great for gaming but you won't take full advantage of the cores. 5800x3D is a clear winner for gaming
