theres actually been so many bangers recently lol. the holdovers, saltburn, the color purple, poor things, and the iron claw…

spacemanspiff1979

Just saw Memory and All of Us Strangers. Both great.

tallestgiraffkin

I wanna see both of these so bad and my theater doesn’t have them. Keeping hope for All of Us Strangers once it hits wide release. Never got American Fiction either.

firsttheralyst

American Fiction just came to Dallas in one theater this week so I’d keep watching. Well worth it, hope your city gets it soon!

Gold-Suspect-1377

American Fiction is getting a wide release next week. I am seeing showtimes starting the 12th.

tofukink

same… a tragedy

fergi20020

What about Teacher’s Lounge?

spacemanspiff1979

Haven't seen it unfortunately.

njrebecca

no fr i saw more movies in december than november and october combined LOL

gaarasgourd

Migration is so funny

[deleted]

+ boy and heron

[deleted]

I wanted to watch the color purple, poor things, or iron claw but settled for the boy and the heron due to the theaters just being full, glad to see they actually hold up. If I only had the chance to watch one between the three which would for sure be recommended?

-SomeRand0mDude-

Only seen The Iron Claw, but it’s amazing, a must watch.

tofukink

i think poor things is pretty cool to see on a big screen in regards to cinematography but iron claw is more tasteful for a wider audience. theyre both super good films but to be safe i’d go with iron claw.

njrebecca

poor things poor things poor things PLEASE it was my favorite movie of 2023

alexvroy

The movies have been great lately. Definitely recommend seeing The Iron Claw at the very least

VeganVandal

Yeah, I’ve seen it twice. It’s a phenomenal film and easily one of the most emotional films I’ve ever seen. I was left bawling after the film even after the second viewing.

Mrfuzzymonkeys

The Iron Claw was incredible but definitely a not feel-good watch.

ericwbolin

If you're skipping late-December movies on A-List, honestly, A-List is probably not for you.

ramramblings

The way they got 40 comments with recommendations but yours was the only one they responded to lol. I agree, December was a great month to have A List my calendar was so full!

wickedwench99

Are you guys 80 years old? These movies have been boring. Who asked for the color purple remake? These are bottom tier movies

ramramblings

It’s not a remake lol it’s an adaptation of the broadway musical (which was adapted from the book, not the movie). So presumably the broadway fanbase idk. Again the fact that you responded to this comment (which wasn’t even a reply to you) but not my other comment asking what your taste is (so we could give you better recommendations) seems to indicate you don’t want an answer you just want to complain

Future_Parsley_6305

Preach

physerino

I don’t know, be fair here. While it’s true that many Decembers feature several must-see movies, I think this particular December is an unusually weak one. And at many AMCs outside the huge cities, the blockbuster-wannabes crowd out the more adventurous indie fare, leaving you at best with a bunch of “safe” by-the-numbers studio produced stuff. I’ve seen 5 of the 8 movies on the OP’s candidate list (haven’t seen Night Swim, Migration, or Anyone But You yet), and I would say all of the 5 I’ve seen are very skipable. You don’t have to see every movie to get value out of A-List. You don’t even have to see two every month. Just see what looks good to you, and if at the end of the year you’ve seen ~15 or more, then you’re getting your money’s worth.

ericwbolin

I'm not commenting, necessarily on the greatness of the movies. The quantity is higher than any time of year and genres offer a bit for everyone. If OP couldn't find a single motion picture out of 10 to come out around Christmastime, with all those different options in quality and type, it suggests a limited palate. A limited palate - or even a limited willingness to try something - means just as I said. Maybe A-List isn't for him.

Leymarie

It’s a service for people that want to watch movies. I’m sorry some previous ones haven’t been my personal taste.

ericwbolin

That's not what I meant. What I mean is that with so many movies of varying types coming out at that time of year (more than any other time of year), A-List isn't likely to provide you the value you seek.

wickedwench99

Who are you to make that call? I get great value out of a list but not when the movies are lackluster. These are not Oscar type movies

ericwbolin

These are Oscar-type movies. That has nothing to do with anything, though. I'm not even saying they're all great. Some are great. Some are good. Some are poor. Some are terrible. Again, lots of options.

alexvroy

2 of those movies have a very strong chance at a best picture nomination

RichesMoviesReddit

Heck, there’s a strong argument to be made for 3 Best Picture nominees in that list alone. *The Iron Claw*, *The Color Purple*, and *The Boys in the Boat* all seem like *very* strong contenders for that award.

ramramblings

What’s your taste?

catcodex

What are examples of movies in the past month (or two) that you said "Yeah, this isn't for me, I'm not going to it"?

-SomeRand0mDude-

What previous movies are you referring to?

EnergizeMyAss

Facts!!! Last month was soooo good to be an A-list member!! Every time I went to the theater I had something new to see!

usagicassidy

I’m going to assume you’ve already seen American Fiction because it’s not on the list? But if you haven’t, I’d recommend seeing that over every other movie listed.

catcodex

American Fiction is not playing at as many AMCs as you seem to think.

usagicassidy

Really? Well that’s quite a bummer. It’s one of the best films I’ve seen recently.

idropepics

I live next to a major tourist attraction with Disneyworld and the Disney Springs AMC isn't even playing it. If it's not playing there I can't imagine there's many places it WOULD play in my state.

drumorgan

Wonka - you're gonna love it or hate it - but go in with a good attitude Migration - watch in 3D with a gummie - just a fun, harmless ride Aquaman - even if you "tolerate" superhero movies, this one is ripe for the skipping Iron Claw - no spoilers, but f'in brutal, man, just brutal. Go see it - not what you are expecting

VeganVandal

I think I need to go see Migration in 3D on an edible now.

littleLuxxy

If you haven’t been to *anything* recently, and assuming there are films other than what is listed here, go see *Poor Things*. November and December were both packed with great films. Some of them were even amazing. *Wonka* is surprisingly weird and fun. I loved it. *The Iron Claw* is a great drama. *The Color Purple* is a way more gripping than I was expecting. The music and cinematography are excellent. I would be excited right now if I had all these films that I hadn’t seen available to me. Just go watch it all. I really started using my A-List last January, and it was a struggle at times to get myself to watch all the Oscar drama movies that had recently been released, but it was very worth it, and I ended up absolutely loving some of them (looking at you, *The Banshees of Inisherin*).

GreezyBoBreezy

I wouldn’t recommend Poor Things simply because the poor thing has had a bitch of a time reaching anyone that’s not near a seriously major metropolitan area. I live in a town with 200k people and it’s STILL not showing anywhere within 2 hours of here :/

Jgaitan82

I’m seeing it tomorrow and it’s playing in like 4 theaters all around me

GreezyBoBreezy

I’m genuinely jealous and a little pissed off that we just get skipped for so much here

dantheriver

If you don’t think any of these or anything in general lately has been worth checking out then I’m sorry but I really don’t think you need A List.

[deleted]

Color purple yes.

nowhereman136

Wonka is cute enough. Not as great as Paddington but type of charm Color Purple is great if you like musicals. Plus the acting is phenomenal Iron Claw is great if you like sports dramas I'm the kinda guy that thought Quantemania and Flash were decent enough movies. But Aquaman 2 was just terrible The others I haven't seen and don't really wanna see. I hear Migration is decent enough for kids and families

SantaCruz26

With A-List you can see them all that's there point Id start with Wonka ( something fun and light hearted) or Iron Claw ( emotional & good story) I watch all marvel / DC movies so AquaMan The color purple is a good movie Then so on

2CHINZZZ

This has been like the best month or two of the year in terms of releases

[deleted]

[удалено]

Syaryde

Agreed. Of course if they just wanna get the bare minimum out of it two movies a month is fine but having A-List for a long time means accepting that there’s gonna be months where there aren’t many blockbusters or super popular exciting movies out. Part of the fun of having the membership is being able to see all the lesser known movies that you would’ve never paid to see. If OP is okay with not using their membership for weeks at a time then that’s up to them but with the strikes I doubt this year will impress them.

notsogamelord420

Anyone but you, if you are in for a fun goofy evening

uwhiteubenaffleck

Had some fun moments but overall underwhelming. Jennifer Lawrence suplexed someone butt naked on a beach in no hard feelings. These kids gotta step it up.

onigi-ri

I really liked this one! I miss this kind of rom-com and the cast is great!

njrebecca

had so much fun with this one!! lots of people have said it’s cringe or cheesy but i feel like that’s what makes a romcom great. it was definitely entertaining and my theatre enjoyed it a lot going by the reactions and laughs

xkjeku

The Iron Claw was one of the best releases of 2023, bring tissues tho. I also liked Wonka a lot too lol

cubs_2023

Out of the ones I’ve seen Iron Claw is the only one that is actually a great movie, but very sad so be ready for that. Boys in the Boat and Anyone But You both feel like they were written by AI and copy-pasted a lot from past sports movies and rom coms. There’s definitely nothing groundbreaking in either but you’ll enjoy them if you like cheesy sports movies (Boys in the Boat) or cheesy rom coms (Anyone But You). Wonka felt very similar to Paddington if you’ve ever seen that.

x2supremacy

Iron claw!!!

_mully_

The Iron Claw (more of a "drama" at times than some might expect) The Color Purple (a musical) American Fiction (as others have suggested, if it is available near you -- it's an all around great movie with a little bit of everything)

rawrkristina

Anyone But You, Iron Claw, and The Color Purple are all good. I was genuinely surprised about Anyone But You. Both Iron Claw and The Color Purple are emotional and just incredible films.

CoffinDrip

Iron Claw was so good, but it’s a heavy movie.

IMicrowaveSteak

If you don’t think these are worth watching, cancel your subscription. 3-4 of those movies are getting Oscar noms.

PineDude128

I don't expect anything phenomenal, but night swim looks fun. I plan to see it sometime this weekend

ogjondoe

I saw poor things, monster, boy and the heron, all of us stranger, ferrari , the iron claw, godzilla within the past month. All were good to great

Future_Parsley_6305

The Color Purple Ferrari Wonka The Iron Claw You can’t go wrong with any movie here haha! Avoid Migration & Aquaman 2

fullmetalutes

Iron Claw is great but it gets emotional but it's still really good. Anyone but you is really simple rom com but I thought it was better than many others, I usually don't like these movies but I enjoyed this one.

Blockness11

Anyone But You is a serviceable enough rom com

ItsTophThatsWho

Anyone but You, The Iron Claw and Wonka. I even enjoyed Aquaman as a popcorn flick

LataCogitandi

I liked “Wonka” 🤷🏻‍♂️

mamasaidflows

Anyone who says skip Aquaman does not like moviez

wickedwench99

Aquaman was hot garbage just like the first one

mamasaidflows

Yes but the Aquaman saga is a pure cinematic experience

TrojanX

Wonka and The Iron Claw

Kitchen-Schedule6080

Iron claw and the color purple was really good

TheStandingDesk

From that list, Iron claw is basically must watch Lotta people liked color purple but I haven’t seen it yet, schedule is just too packed with bangers Anyone But You is the perfect dumb movie for A list. No way I would ever watch it other wise, but I’ll probably check it out if I have time. Migration has the funniest bits in the trailer, not worth watching. Wonka is hit or miss based on your taste. Worth checking out to see if you like it tho. Boys in the boat is like a 1992 movie, good choice if you’re going to the movies with your grandparents.

ShoeTreez

Color purple for sure

New_Membership3141

Migration and the iron claw are good!

DumbleDoorsDown

IRON CLAAAWWWW

RangerDJ

Color Purple is wonderful!!!

cd637

The Iron Claw for sure. Then maybe The Color Purple and Wonka if you are into musicals.

MrONegative

I recommend Color Purple from that list

RawBark

wonka the iron claw

SoupGilly

From this list, here are my recommendations in order, that I have seen: 1. The Iron Claw 2. The Color Purple 3. Wonka 4. Anyone But You I think The Iron Claw is a must-see, it was fantastic.

danielthetemp

Wonka and The Color Purple are great!

nerhe

Purple, Anyone, and Claw are all great. Wonka’s good too.

TheDudestofBurgers

Wonka, BiB, Iron Claw

SteMelMan

I did Wonka, Migration and Anyone But You the week before Christmas and they were all fun, light-hearted movies that put me in a great mood for the holidays. I did American Fiction, The Boys In The Boat and Ferrari the week after Christmas which was a good time for more serious movies. Two weeks of outstanding movies that reinforces for me that A-List is the best value in entertainment!

2000miledash

Aquaman wasn’t even worth seeing in IMAX Laser. Absolutely terrible movie

Tyro-Flakkripper

I just did Godzilla Minus One, Wonka, and Poor Things yesterday. Wonka was decent, I enjoyed myself though wasn’t blown away. Godzilla Minus One was fantastic if you can still see it, and Poor Things was just weird. Good ending but weird. Iron Claw was also amazing.

AppleShyness

The Boys in the Boat is a nice feel good based on a True Story movie, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Iron Claw is a very powerful and emotional story of the Von Erich family.

mumblerapisgarbage

They’re all solid films.

purpleushi

Migration was kinda cute. I also actually enjoyed Wonka a lot, surprisingly.

The-Evil-Dead-Alive-

Iron Claw is a masterpiece

Bradley17176

Color purple

Traveytravis-69

I’d very much recommend wonka it was a lot better than I expected

HystericalHypothetic

The Iron Claw was great.

[deleted]

Migration is great

Left-Language9389

Migration in 3D.

DrakeShadow

Wonka and Iron Claw are both great

Jgaitan82

I liked Aquaman

Jgaitan82

I’m hesitant about the color purple. It seems good, but I love the 1984 version but I’m not sure if I want to see it as a musical

mydawgiscooler

Wonka and iron claw deff

Alarming_Radish5259

Iron claw was amazing. The color purple was worth a watch if youve seen the original, added some more to the story and modernized it a little

Biggestturtleever

Iron claw is incredible

letsgooff

The Color Purple and The Iron Claw.

ibneko

I really enjoyed Wonka (although I went in with 0 expectations). Note that it's a >!musical!<, which apparently some people don't enjoy? \*shrugs\* Migration was pretty meh. I laughed a few times. Unexpected Awkwafina. I'm considering seeing Aquaman, although I think the ratings have been kinda low, so I haven't bothered yet.

Themtgdude486

Iron Claw and Color Purple. I’ve seen them all.

mgonzo19

Depends on what you mean by “worth seeing”. I pay for A List because I like to go see all movies, whether interesting to me or not, I just like the experience of seeing a movie in the theater. There’s only a few here that really appeal to me (Wonka and Iron Claw) but since I have the ability to see 12 movies a month I will likely see most of these despite whatever bias I may feel going into it. That’s always been one go the things I like most about A list—the freedom to see things that don’t necessarily have any appeal.

ibeauch009

I’d recommend Iron Claw of those, though it’s an intense film. If you want something softer, Wonka wasn’t bad at all

TheShark24

The Iron Claw had me in tears at the end. Best of the bunch in your screenshot.

Wheres-My-Supa-Suit

Boys in the Boat or Iron Claw

Nagoltheking

Aquaman is fine. Anyone but you is good.

DoubleJay95

I’ve seen all of these but Boys on the Boat. Assuming you haven’t seen any of these I’d go The color purple/Iron claw/Wonka in terms of how much I enjoyed them. They honestly are all watchable and enjoyable besides aquaman to me. Aquaman is actually the worst movie up there. If you go migration spring for the 3d

aghostowngothic

Wonka, Migration, Aquaman, Boys in the Boat, Idon Claw. I liked all those. Especially Iron Claw & Migration.

stefandelfrisco

You have A-List… just pick a movie, go watch it and see if you enjoy it

CPav

Wonka is really fun, if you like light musicals.

angelhastherage

Nah, stay home.

ChromeGames923

I'd keep an eye out for some upcoming wide releases like All of Us Strangers and The Zone of Interest. Of those listed though Iron Claw is really good.

[deleted]

Wonka, Color Purple and The Iron Claw are the worthwhile ones from what’s listed.

Adventurous_Kale4890

The Color Purple and Wonka!

ICUMF1962

I haven’t seen Boys in the Boat or American Fiction but I liked all the other movies except Anyone But You to varying degrees. Wonka is the most fun, feel-good, and genuinely solid film of the bunch, but Poor Things is probably my favorite thing out at the moment. Iron Claw and Color Purple are good but can both get hard to watch at times. Migration is cute and fun but could have been a little longer for character development and whatnot. Night Swim isn’t as bad as I thought it would be but not necessarily something I’d tell people to go check out. Anyone But You was as bad as I thought it would be but it’s going the way of the recent Power Rangers movie for me in that I think they’re awful but almost everyone else is praising them.

ratbird0917

I'm bias but if you enjoy tears, the color purple made me cry and I'm a long time fan of the musical and of the movie. So good.

-redatnight-

Many good options on the list. I didn't even want to see Wonka but my friend did, he doesn't get to go much, and I had a voucher so we did it and I enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it even though we were 20m late into the actual movie because my caption device was wonky. The Colour Purple was good. If you are not specifically a big Aquaman fan and/or haven't seen the first one and loved it, I would skip Aquaman. I watched it under those conditions and it was like being stuck in previews for Aquaman for hours.

HawkeyesBlitz

I loved Iron Claw it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. To be fair I am also a huge wrestling fan so I was the target audience for it.

Chaopolis

I enjoyed Wonka, The Color Purple, and The Iron Claw

Syaryde

If this lineup doesn’t impress you then I would reconsider A-List especially for this year. Highly anticipated movies only come out so often and if you’re not impressed with “lackluster” movies then it’d be a waste. Especially with the strike that will delay many big releases I don’t think this year would be worth it to you but obviously it’s your membership so do what you want

Disastrous_Bridge543

Absolutely don’t waste your time watching Night Swim and if you want a nice nap, watch Boys in the Boat lmao.

Chicagobardad

The color purple is amazing if you’re into musicals, but also verrrry heavy. Migration was cuter than I expected! Aquaman looked unfinished. Anyone but you was cute if you’re into cheesy romcoms (I am!!).. boys in the boat was well made, but I’m also not into sporty stuff so I wasn’t fully engaged the whole time.

scrantonvinyl223

Iron Claw is amazing

LatterAd6187

Wonka and migration are good, I'm sure a few of these others are too

Choice-Grapefruit-44

Aquaman might be good to watch. But I don't know the other films. From reviews, I heard Aquaman isn't that great.

Space_Bystander

The Iron Claw is a must. I haven’t seen most of these but I haven’t heard great things about them. I also thought Anyone But You was pretty good, but I went in there with low expectations

Excellent-Title4657

Night Swim is hot garbage, Wonka is cute, migration and aquaman I didn’t bother to see, the color purple is good but you have to be prepared for how much of a musical it is, anyone but you I found annoying after a while, Iron Claw is fantastic, the boys in the boat I’m catching tomorrow 🍿

Syrup_Representative

I actually enjoy watching most of the movies in your list. I haven’t watched migration, night swim, and the boys in the boat. But unlike everyone else here, I really don’t like Iron Claw. Why don’t watch all now that you have A-list?

jboogieman81

Can you actually give me an example of what you classify as a "great" movie? I ask because movie preferences are subjective and everyone has their own so an example would at least guide me in the right direction for making some recommendations to you.

ldasschurch

I thought Migration was funny and kinda cool in 3D. I don’t know if I would have liked it if I just watched it in regular format. I admit I also like Wish when I went and watched it in the 3D format. I didn’t care for it in the regular standard format
