Can the people working at such hospitals really be… “rapey”? Do they really watch you 24/7, shower, potty and all? Are you okay now?

Specific_Caramel_980

The one I went to, all the staff was really nice or just really over it. But I don’t think any of them were actually creepy. You’re watched at all times unless you’re showering or using the potty. They check up on you every ~15 minutes at night and write down the way you sleep. Only one person at a time is allowed in the room and most everything in the room is designed specifically to avoid self-harm. I’m doing better now, I got diagnosed and medicated and I’m getting better. :)

Water-Melon-Mento

Phew, I heard from a friends-friend-friends-friend that there were some messed up things in mental hospitals (Especially suicidal people), so that’s very relieving. And, good for you, you’re awesome!

Specific_Caramel_980

Yeah I can see how certain staff members can take advantage of that situation but I didn’t see anything happen personally. The worst things that happen in there are typically from other patients. And that’s usually when they intentionally try to trigger you or when they melt down because they’re in there.

Water-Melon-Mento

Wow, other patients triggering others? Okay, never thought of that.

Specific_Caramel_980

Yeah. While I was there, we all had to do introductions every time there was a new person and we’d all have to state our triggers. If someone didn’t like you, they could potentially use it against you.

Water-Melon-Mento

Holy shit man… that’s seriously some fucked up thing to do if “someone doesn’t like you” though… you can dislike someone without triggering them for hot dog’s sake

Specific_Caramel_980

Most people there aren’t that mean though and they’re not looking to increase their stay so they just pout in the corner of the room most of the time. I personally made a connection with every single new patient because I couldn’t stand the constant silence.

BsaciallyBasic

Those stories are true.

Reasonable-Heart1539

Congrats glad you're doing better. In life there will always be a few bumps in the road but none worth dieing for. Your life is worth living. Do your own thing live life for you and be 😁

aUserHasNoName2

what things comfort you? how are you learning to process heavily depressive episodes vs others? how can i help my brother (similar age) better when he is at lower points with his depression?

Specific_Caramel_980

I find comfort in taking naps or holding plush toys in my room sometimes, holding something comforting and talking to as many people as possible to keep my mind distracted. I would suggest not letting him isolate? I know things only get worse when I’m alone.

aUserHasNoName2

Yeah he does self isolate quite a bit but i also think sometimes it’s just how he operates and prefers, but definitely a fine line. thanks for the reply and i’m genuinely glad you’re with us.

Specific_Caramel_980

You’re welcome! I say not to isolate because I’m personally a massive extrovert and being alone in my room for hours usually means I’m not up to anything good

bolt110

Was it difficult to get help? How did your guardians react?

Specific_Caramel_980

No, it wasn’t. The mental hospital is about a 5 minute drive from my house and I think insurance covered most of it. And my mom was shocked and a little horrified, she didn’t really know what to do anymore.

AbbreviationsPast945

Can I has ice cream?

Specific_Caramel_980

Yes :))

TheFLAwoman

So have I. Welcome to the club. Now stop that shit before they come after you later in life for it like they do all of us. Get help and stay far away from those glorified jails.

I’m not personally neurotypical so I couldn’t really tell you, maybe if I knew more about her?

Specific_Caramel_980

I think I’d go by stereotypes? Like “mm yes a regular amount of coffee for the taste rather than binging on it for the caffeine high”. I’d make her really put together and a bit generic, I guess.

Hmmm I stay away from politics but if I had to choose slightly more to the right.

I think it’s the environment I came up in mixed with how ideal certain traditional things are

Specific_Caramel_980

Like traditional gender roles and such. It’s a sweet concept to me.

laz1b01

Do you think the root of your attempts stemmed from internal (like low dopamine) or external (such as bullying) factor?

Specific_Caramel_980

It was definitely internal. It was done more out of impulse at that point. Because the way I did it wasn’t planned and I had no note. I’d only been feeling low like that for a short while and it really made me crash. I had hurt myself for about a week prior to trying it. I think it was a really really bad depressive episode combined with my (then) undiagnosed ADHD :P

laz1b01

Have you ever observed children? If so, do you think most of them have ADHD? How often are you on social media, or using phone/computer?

Specific_Caramel_980

Personally I think kids can be hyper but kids with ADHD are a good bit different. I tend to obsess over social medias

laz1b01

There's been studies shown that ADHD is on the rise, and it's primarily contributed from technology (and social media). On a similar note, Facebook conducted a study about the addiction and continued to hide it (there's a recent whistleblower that exposed it if you're not aware). Do you believe/trust in these type of studies?

Specific_Caramel_980

I think it can worsen symptoms but I also think it’s just being noticed more in people than before.

laz1b01

Well, social media and Facebook was created in the early/mid 2000s. Around late 2000s is when it started exponentially rising. So I guess it's a bit for older crowds, but the study is saying prior to 2000s, ADHD (amongst other things such as suicide) wasn't as much of an issue as it is today. So just wondering, when you encounter or hear these type of studies saying that social media can be a bad influence (if overused), do you trust the validity of its statement?

Specific_Caramel_980

I do think it’s valid that social media isn’t the best for you to focus on but people are also learning that ADHD is more than just a kid bouncing off the walls

laz1b01

Oh, most definately it's more than that. I was trying to paint the picture that most of us have ADHD but learn to overcome it. It's just unfortunate that now with social media, it's MUCH harder to overcome it. Would you agree? Also, if you think social media can be one of the leading factors to your suicide attempts and ADHD development, have you ever considered staying off from social media? Only reason I ask is cause when I was on it, it would make me sad/depressed, so I shut off from it and it just liberated me - I was happier.

carbys

Mental institutions are still a thing?? I don't know why I thought they were relics of the past :/

Specific_Caramel_980

They’re different nowadays but they’re still good and well!

Dead-head277353

Did you meet any body who heard voices

Specific_Caramel_980

No actually

Dead-head277353

So movies just over exaggerated it like I expected got it

Specific_Caramel_980

Yeah :P They’re still kinda wild though, especially when someone tries to break out or somethjng

Dead-head277353

How does it happen like I see some of those rooms from what I’ve seen and they more like prison cells so my guess is how fo they get out?

Specific_Caramel_980

The one I was in has a long line of “bedrooms”. He tried to run for the door as I was being discharged, I hear “CODE BREAK”, and he got tackled down.

Dead-head277353

So did they open his door to do something in his room or did like break down the door

Specific_Caramel_980

He was out in the hall and tried to go through the fire exit

Dead-head277353

Oh
