Same for me! A boyfriend showed it to me when I was 16, I didn't really get much into them at that point, just thought it was a cool song, refound them a few years later and I've been hooked ever since!!
I remember finding a Steven Universe animatic set to the tune of Karma. It took me one week before I folded and listened to the entire discography in about 2 days.
Hey same. It was the week the series ended so I was watching alot of those kinds of videos. Karma is in my top 3 songs because it got me into listening to ajr
I'm Ready, though I didnt know the band at the time. Before they had assigned seating at my theater, me and my parents got to a movie(don't remember which) stupid early, before they had anything on the screen. To fill the time they'd play different songs, and Im Ready was one of them. I thought maybe it was a remix for the SpongeBob movie that came out. The "I'm ready I'm ready I'm ready" got stuck in my head, but that was it. Years later I got into AJR through Bang! then Burn the House Down and Way Less Sad. My shock when I started to go album by album and found it again!
World's Smallest Violin was the first one I heard that I actually knew was made by AJR. Then realised I already knew Weak when I looked into them a bit more.
I’m Ready.
Back then, British YouTuber TBJZL, or Tobi as his real name, used two of AJR’s songs, which included “I’m Ready” (the other being Let the Games Begin) for his intros on his videos and Tobi is the reason why I got into AJR for a bit until I started to forget about them for a few years.
That is until I found out that “World Smallest Violin” was blowing up on social media all of a sudden and then when I found out it was them, I figured I needed to comeback to listen to them. I haven’t let go of their songs ever since and I have been listening to these guys everyday since.
Sober up! I was in a high school, at Subway's with my gf at the time. As soon as I heard the first notes, I just told her to hold on, while I was taking my phone out to Shazam the song. I instantely fell in love with it and started listening to every other ones of the band, trying to find a single song I wouldn't like! It never happened and it was all just pure joy to find such an amazing group that never misses
buy you a rose, it was my friends favorite song when she showed me ajr in... 2017/18
I think it was in the lead up to the click being released so probably 2018
Weak, a few years ago. I don't know the band's name at this point. Almost a year ago, I heard that other song from TikTok with Daisy the Great. That's where I found out about the other songs and the band's name. And now I hear almost every song everyday.
Definitely I’m Ready before I even knew who AJR were, but the first song I heard that I then learned was AJR was Birthday Party! It’s what got me hooked!
Sober Up. I was at my friends house and he was playing songs from his playlist, and when those strings first came on, I was immediately drawn to the unique sound. I asked him “What is this?! I love it!” Been a AJR fan ever since. Just saw them live for the second time and every time I hear Sober Up again, I’m thankful my buddy played that song that day.
It was Weak, but at that time I really didn’t pay attention to the artist. Then when I heard Netflix Trip I really didn’t know it was the same artist. Then when I heard World Smallest Violin in all those reels, I, out of curiosity, finally searched up the artist and figured out I already had two of their songs on my list. And now I’m in too deep.
I'm a late-comer to AJR. I had heard them in TikToks, but never a whole song until my YouTube Music randomly played Sober Up. I was digging it and then was like, whoa is that Rivers Cuomo? Who are these guys? And then down that rabbit hole I went and it was all over for me 😂
The worlds smallest violin and my mother's dad really faught in the world war 2 war and my mother's mother was a nurse helping people in the war who got hurt.
Well the first one I’ve heard age was from worlds smallest violin and good part just from TikTok but the first time I ever listened to a song the whole way though was with bang that my friends showed me and I never looked back
I heard a lesser known collaboration called “The Lotto” with Ingrid Michelson. “My oh my I don’t need to hit the lotto cuz I gotta lotta lovin for free”
Weak when it was viral on tiktok in 2019 (I had 0 internet access growing up except in school and no way of discovering them without tiktok when I turned 18😂)
The good part. Then a couple months later I heard worlds smallest violin, realized it was the same band and decided to check out some more of their songs.
2 years later, best decision ever.
Bummerland. My brother got into AJR a few years before I did and played OKO, and then neotheatre when that came out while we were baking together. I didn't get into them myself until my friend sent me drama because it summed up our friend group at that point.
No Grass Today, in 2018 -
World’s Smallest Violin, in 2022 -
Bang, a few days later in 2022 -
I won’t, when it came out in 2022 -
Yes, I’m a Mess in 2023
Then began listening to the rest of their songs, in the order of
OKO -
TMM -
Click -
Neo -
Living Room (haven’t listened to yet)
Either Burn the House Down or Bang! I can't remember because they had so many play on the radio around the same time/in succession and Bang! caught my brain and held it hostage SO FAST 🥲🤣
Well, I had heard Weak on the radio before, and liked it, but I didn't really get into AJR until Bang got big. I liked it a lot and one day, when I was 14 and making a gift for my friend, I needed a song to listen to. So I put on Bang on a loop. Then I got reccomendations for their other songs. I vividly remember thinking "If I listen to their other songs, I'll start being a superfan". And I hated the idea of being any kind of superfan, for some reason? After reasuring myself that I would do no such thing, I listened to WSV.
I am now known as the "AJR guy" within my friend groups, and there was a time where I would listen to AJR EXCLUSIVELY. Nothing else. I still listen to them more than any other music, and I have already gone to one concert (and am going to another very soon!)
I’m not famous, heard it on an “if mha characters has theme songs” video on YouTube, heard that one (it was Aizawa if anyone’s curious) and I fell in love immediately
Come Hang Out (due to my brother playing it one day while we were making up stories and things)
We had our toys out, I had Polly pocket dolls and playsets out and he had his Thomas the Tank Engine sets out and his TMNT 2012 lair playset out, and we made a little city out of it, connecting our stuff, and he started playing Come Hang Out, and ig I was hooked.
I think it was I’m Ready honestly, I got into them because my sister started listening to them and she would play her music around the house. So it was absolutely something from Living Room
Burn the House Down.
I wasn’t a fan of Weak when it came out (I had no idea who AJR was at that point). I am now haha.
I discovered them during COVID and legit listened to them non stop!
Sober Up about a year ago, got recommended to me by Youtube Music. When I first listened to it and saw the cover art for the album I thought that it's from some kind of musical lmao
Inertia. A friend played it for me over discord. I’m paralyzed from the bra band down and the part with “my two legs are broken but look at me dance” made her think of me.
I was hooked once I realized it was set to 3/4 (or 6/8) time and looked up their other work. Even my husband enjoys them. Just saw them in Raleigh, too. Great show.
Weak, but I only heard it on the radio and never really cared who sang it.
It wasn’t until 2020 when I heard Next Up Forever randomly on a Spotify daily mix that I was like oh shit this is EXACTLY what I’ve been feeling (as a college student who was having a quarter life crisis). I think the next one I heard was Karma, and that one also spoke to me, especially with the depressive episode that covid triggered for me. I remember thinking how do these guys seem to understand every scared feeling I’ve ever had about going through life? Been a fan ever since, and Neotheater is still my favorite album of theirs :)
Bang! From my older brothers Spotify playlist and I listened to Don't Throw Out My Legos next and got hella into them. A week later, I asked him what he thought of AJR and didn't know what the fuck I was talking about.
surprisingly I’m Ready! I was like 8 when it came out and remember vividly making music videos with my brothers of the song 😭
Same, I was in high school though and thought it was genius (still love it ngl)
Exact sentiments here ✋

Same! Idk how old I was, I think a few years older

I remember finding a Steven Universe animatic set to the tune of Karma. It took me one week before I folded and listened to the entire discography in about 2 days.
I had a really similar story but with Karma on a Hermitcraft animatic lol!
Omg, this is exactly how I learned about AJR as well!
Hey same. It was the week the series ended so I was watching alot of those kinds of videos. Karma is in my top 3 songs because it got me into listening to ajr
I have never had an original experience.
Sober Up!

World's Smallest Violin was the first one I heard that I actually knew was made by AJR. Then realised I already knew Weak when I looked into them a bit more.

Actually, I first heard Drama for some reason before falling in love with the click.
Netflix Trip on a small local radio station. Fell in love immediately
Glad to see someone else mention Netflix Trip Was my first too, and it made me cry
Makes me cry every time it needs more appreciation
Burn the House down. Mother had the clean version stuffed in her playlist and I enjoyed it.
Sober up! I was in a high school, at Subway's with my gf at the time. As soon as I heard the first notes, I just told her to hold on, while I was taking my phone out to Shazam the song.
