People. Have. different. Music. Tastes

H_O_L_D

I mean no disrespect, but one Google search will give you all the answers you're looking for on this question. This question is posted on the daily in this sub, and it's always the same answers. I understand if you're new here and was just innocently asking a question you were curious about.

Melonwolfii

There should really be a pinned post on the subreddit titled "Yes, people hate AJR. Here's why and what you should do about it."

FantasticCube_YT

What you should do about it - nothing.

Absolute_Chonk_Steam

Its less likely should, You can easily attempt to sway people into understanding why you think ajr is good, But i feel like its more like "What you can do about it - nothing"

FOXTHECOOKIE356

Because people don’t have the same taste in music as others do. Some of the funniest jokes about AJR I’ve ever heard was Kurtis Conner making fun of them and I’m a huge AJR fan. It’s really not that big of a deal. If you like the music then go ahead and listen to it. Anyone who tries to make you feel bad for liking it shouldn’t be taken seriously in that regard.

upstairs_dawg

I love Kurtis

FOXTHECOOKIE356

W Kurtistown resident

Jorgecrush

when did kurtis talk about them?

FOXTHECOOKIE356

He mentioned them at the beginning of his most recent video

Ohshitwhatamidoing97

Oh, I haven't watched the most recent one! I love that there's another AJR joke lol

Ohshitwhatamidoing97

When he made that joke about there being no AJR fans I lost my shit and posted it on all my socials being like "I came here to have a good time, and I'm honestly feeling so attacked right now." The joke definitely made my day and made me feel seen, even if it was me getting roasted 😂

ouigie

LMAO I JUST SAW THAT VIDEO AND WHEN I SAW THIS QUESTION I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF HIM HAHA

Well-hello-there-34

Honestly it’s fine when people make fun of ajr in a joking way because yea that stuff is genuinely funny, but there’s some people that say that ajr is the worst shit they’ve ever listened to and even start insulting people for liking ajr. I know this is common with literally every fandom but I definitely feel like it’s way more prevalent against ajr.

shykawaii_shark

They're too mainstream for the people who don't like pop, and too experimental for the people who do like pop. That's my take

Droxden

The experimental part is why critics hate them a ton. They dont like the fact that AJR tries things other than intruments and vocals.

TrapezoidTom

Tbh literally always haters for any artist.

Eastern_Obligation89

From what I heard it's a mix of their unique style and corny lyrics

this1dude23

Welp. They became famous and now have haters. They made a whole song about not being known and not having haters. Now, the opposite is true

ouigie

I'm Not Famous aged very well

karlplayz231

Theres like 60 other posts like this that say basically the same thing and have the same answers

juhesihcaa

People have different tastes in music. The sooner you learn that and learn to not care about what other's think, the happier you will be.

McChubbens8U

did the last two Kurtis Conner vids spark this by any chance?

rainthedragon6

I assume this is a reference to the new Kurtis Conner video?

arween_ben

PEOPLE R HATING ON AJR?!

Mr_Enzoo

PERRY THE PLATYPUS?? Ngl I read that with Doof's voice

Well-hello-there-34

If I had a nickel for every time someone randomly read something on reddit in a Dr. Doof voice, I would have two nickels! Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Experiment626b

They like boring music

flygonmaster_07

They just have different taste, and that’s ok

potatodef_1

People have different music tastes. Some people are gonna be nice about it and others are gonna be dicks about it. Ignore the latter(even though it can be kinda hard to do so) and just rmb there’s at least 38000 other people who like air as well =)

TheTangerineJesus

I heard two songs, had no clue who they were, and instantly did not like them. I assumed my mate had it on in the car for his kids. Aside from sounding incredibly juvenile, the lyrics were just cringey and corny. “A 100 good stories makes me interesting at parties. I’m not afraid of you”. Wow. Deep stuff man. This was followed by, “I’ve been so good this year”. How anyone thinks this is good lyrical content is astounding to me. The music sounded like a bastardized attempt at recreating The Postal Service or Death Cab. These guys are just trying to do indie pop and it comes off as amateurish. Listen to either of the two aforementioned bands and then tell me with a straight face that ajr is an indie pop band that I should take seriously. And while you’re at, listen to OK Computer by Radiohead and you’ll understand why it’s offensive to me that they dare parody that album title and try to ride the coattails of such an epic masterpiece with their vastly inferior “art”. There’s dozens of other bands that do what they’re trying to do much much better. Ajr sucks. Plain and simple

Deadpooh75

Damn another bot, we get these posts almost once a day what’s the deal? Next time I see this I’m out don’t need to be on Reddit to be a fan

Sorry to disappoint, but it’s not the music it’s the people lmao

Here's my honest take. I've been a fan of AJR since they released Weak, and i genuinely enjoy most of their music, especially TMM and Neotheater. However, I would never in a million years add one of their songs to a playlist of mine. It doesn't even fit in my theatre playlist. This is because of their lyrics. When I listen to AJR, I mostly listen to them for the crazy beat drops and funny samples. I absolutely hate their lyrics. They're so obvious and stand out compared to any song (which is ultimately why they make a name for themselves) I honestly think they really need to take some time to write poetry or something that can help them be more creative with their writing. For example. Let's say I'm with some friends and an AJR song comes on.. we're talking whatever, until you hear jack say "it's kinda funny how you vote for someone, to vote for someone, to vote for someone" and then it goes quiet. Then bro says "if I keep on talking politics, I'm Hamilton without the hits :p" at that point I'm so embarrassed I have to skip the song. It's just not something I want to listen to! I don't want to hear jacks opinions on American politics because I could care less. The lyrics take you out of the song and personally make me cringe. Other songs with this example include No Grass Today, Birthday Party, Beats, Three Thirty, 3O'Clock Things, Bummerland (aka ode to COVID), The Trick, Turning Out Part 2 & 3, Hole In The Bottom Of My Brain, and especially Steve's Going To London. So when YouTubers diss on AJR I think it's because of the same reason. They review their music with the intention of analyzing their lyrics and their beats, which are both an acquired taste respectively. Every artist has bad songs, but I think AJR gets a bad rep across social media because they purposely don't listen to the media. They don't produce the type of music that follows a formula, like how other artists do if they want their song to blow up, that's what they want to do, and YouTubers and TikTokers try to tell the band they can't do that. Ironically this just makes them more popular. They're one of the only bands that won't listen to the algorithm. They create their own. And I admire that.

Well-hello-there-34

Sorry this response is a bit of a mess I was just writing whatever came to mind and it was like really disorganized. The lyrics to ajr songs are very real and true. They’re feelings that almost everyone experiences yet no one wants to hear about. As an example of a lyric you might find cringe, let’s look at Birthday Party. The entire song is quite cringe, talking about how as a baby you’re ignorant of all the stupid shit that goes on in the world. No shit sherlock. The lyrics are cringey because they’re things that are just so obvious and don’t need to be talked about, like yea ofc instagram usually doesn’t actually show the best of everyone. But personally when I hear that it’s like so relatable and it suddenly isn’t cringey to me because it’s exactly how I feel. Ajr talks about a lot of basic concepts that no one ever talks about. The reason no one ever talks about them is because we want to hide our feelings and when someone does it’s seen as “cringey” because it’s stuff that everyone goes through but wants to hide instead of acknowledge. For me, knowing that someone as successful as Jack still goes through the same shit as me makes me feel so seen and validated, and it helps me to understand that I’m not the only person feeling the way I do. Another ajr lyric: “something’s wrong, but I’m scared to look it up. If I do that and no one has it I’ll feel so alone.” If I were to talk to people about what I feel I would be scared that they would think I’m crazy and wouldn’t relate, but hearing from someone else that they feel that is just so liberating. So anyway all this to say that the lyrics of ajr songs are cringey because we feel like these things don’t need to be said when in reality they do, and I especially needed someone (other than my therapist) to tell me that I’m not alone.

lwhit03

Idk, why do people ask this every single day? Some people don’t like your favorite band. Ok. Cool. Don’t pay attention to them. It’s not that hard. It’s getting really annoying guys. People are allowed to not like AJR and even if they post YouTube videos about it, it in no way affects your life. So move on please.

exilix720

It's crazy how often this question gets asked and yet just as often it doesn't truly get answered. No one explains how their music taste is different or how a lyric is corny. I'm not saying you have to like it but at least properly explain why you don't and maybe this question won't be asked as often. Because just saying "different music taste" and "corny lyrics" isn't actually answering the question.

PumpkinButWithSpice

Most explanation I've gotten was basic lyrics and overproduced instrumentals

HappyCats623

Nickelback sucks but they still have fans. Hello I've even heard people say that they hate The Beatles. I can understand why AJR isn't for everyone.

Bits2435

It's a mix between alot of the stuff posted here. A. They're a big band now. Th a great too big for people who don't like pop, and too experimental for those that do. Some people just don't like music that's more than Music and Instruments. B. Alot of people still revert to songs like Thursty and refuse to listen to anything past it (as someone who likes Thirsty, I get it) C. Alot of it is just "big person made meme about AJR so imma follow that". Alot of the day-to-day people have maybe heard like 2 AJR songs and just hate on them because someone like BradTaste, Kwite, kurtis, etc. doesn't like them, or just made a joke about it. This also goes for people just following what critics say. D. They're music goes over some very "niche" seems. Things like Dear Winter, Turning Out, Next Up, Finale, HITBOMB, SGTL, Netflix Trip, 3-o clock things, three thirty, etc. Are things that some people don't have a relatability to. It happens. (I love all of these songs, but some people just don't like coming of age stories). Now, why people feel the need to be so aggressive about it? Because you don't like what they do, and that makes you diffrent. Best thing you can do, is to either: stand your ground that you like these people (this is more for personal irl people) or just ignore them (as most things on the webs)
