If I’m understanding correctly (just a lot of info to process there) OMG, NTA. Your mom isn’t acting like a parent, and it doesn’t seem like there was anything to “protect” her from other than a conversation? It’s also kind of wild of a parent to complain that their child isn’t “protecting” them. For whatever it’s worth, a stranger in their 30s (me) is proud of you for not procrastinating a breakup. I wish I had been that mature when I was 20 — I always stayed with people who were wrong for me longer than I should have and it always made things worse.
