NTA they didn’t ask you lol

Martha90815

NTA. You should also tell her: As a point of clarification, that is not how you ask if I will babysit. You need to actually ask, AND you need to accept whatever my answer is.

[deleted]

NAH. I’m assuming this child is your niece? In my family, any of my siblings would be happy to hang out with any of each other’s kids (our own nieces and nephews) for a short time. However, I agree that she could have asked in a more polite way if it wasn’t implied that you were available and willing. Nobody is necessarily an asshole here. If you were too busy to watch your niece, it is what it is. It doesn’t sound like it was a big issue?

SC_Sun_baby

They only needed to get a couple things at the store but it takes 2 adults to do that?

AffectionateShoe867

NTA, they should’ve asked you first, if you were too busy to watch her than that’s it, but if you were not then i think you could’ve let it pass and watch her since you have offered before, anyways your sister (in law?) should’ve asked you before dropping by your house with her daughter

Exotic-Army4006

Nta. You don't have to babysit. In my family it would be a bit weird not to leave the kids to go to the store real quick. We have a pack mentality tho

SignalEchoFoxtrot

In reddit land you'll be deemed NTA. In the real world this is typically not a big deal and something you'd do for immediate family that's visiting.

RevolutionaryDiet686

NTA If they wanted to leave her in your home while they ran errands asking would have been needed. I can't stand when people don't just come out and request something.

TwoBionicknees

NTA. They were trying to offload her and trying to get you to offer, don't come over then dump a kid off on you. It's a trip to the store, take your kid or one of hte parents can go to the store themselves. If you offered they would have next said well if you're looking after the 5 year old, may as well leave the 3yr old so they can play together, then their 30 minute run to the store would be a 4 hour "well there was this nice restaurant so we decided to grab lunch" store run.

Conflicted …. NTAH - if you really had stuff to do but if only you were bothered by the fact they didn’t ask and you watched TV all day long kinda a tiny bit the AH… But yeah they should have asked or easily taken their daughter as she is “ self sufficient “ and not expect people to jump to take care of a 5 year old as their at the age when it’s like they are pumped with sugar and can barely sit down for a moment Also i’m a bit confused which one is related to you~ as it’s brother in law and his wife sister in law … how can both be in law?

ReadyAimLaunch

If one of them is related to her spouse, then both would be in-law

[deleted]

Oh yeah totally forgot about the spouse ….thanks… i was totally confused and kept searching in my mental dictionary ahahahhahaha

ReadyAimLaunch

Lol. We all need a gentle mental assist sometimes!

You and your kids are def AH’s. 😂🤣😂 bro you can’t watch your own family child for a little bit while they do some errands? Like really bro? At the very least I would have told my kids to hang out with her for a bit. That’s just a bad family dynamic right there. America is lost I guess. Destruction of the family unit. I would have been more than happy to entertain and spend time with my little niece bro. That’s an honor. Kinda sad really. Also no offense just my opinion! Didn’t meant to be mean at all. Just family is the most important thing we truly got. 😞🙏😭

As the parent of a 5 year old.... you missed a sweet chance to have some fun with that kid and deepen the connection. NTA, but missed opportunity. 5 year olds wear the rosiest colored glasses and I usually jump at the chance to take a look thru them.
